BRAVO - an iconic German teen magazine (yes they expanded it to a few other European countries as well) that was a part of many teenager's lives and was a part of their coming of age journeys from the 60s until its declining popularity with the rise of the internet and social media.
In this video, I show my Canadian wife Alexis the magazines my generation grew up with, including all the great spicy details we learned from the Dr. Sommer Team and the controversial "Body Checks"... A little shocking for the prude North American mentality?
Check out their website here: www.bravo.de/
We hope you enjoyed this video!

Ah, this is just awesome. :D I was buying those in high school and always checked out the "naked" section first. Haha!
Core memory unlocked - we had these in Poland too, and I used to spend all my money on these. But they were a bit more tame, with no naked photos and such. I mean, my mom approved of these magazines after all. But what I remember the most were all the accessories, the cheap earrings and bracelets.
I used to spend all my pocket money on Bravo, Bravo Girl, Yam and Mädchen in the 2000s. :D I wasn't technically allowed to buy the Bravo because of the Body Check but who cares. They also had Bravo TV and I remember my grandma turning the TV off when they were talking about foreplay. Nowadays, everything is available online so no need to spend that much money on all the magazines anymore.
Yeah, but those were the days. :o) * * *
Canada had Dr. Ruth live.
🤣🤣🤣 Oh my god, I've never laughed so much at a youtube video! Those old issues are amazing!
In the Netherland we also have these magazines also bravo.Alexis makes me laugh it is customary here too. Germany and the Netherland are open when it comes on sex from the sixties it started.
Do you remember we also had the "Break Out"?
Alexis, as a Canadian too, I wanted to clutch my pearls many many times during this. 😄
Haha gotta love Bravo 👏 🙌 😂 we also had it in the Czech Republic and by the sound of it it was exactly the same as it was in Germany
Fantastic video from you both!💖
In the 90s, there were even hit songs aimed at the teenage market going strong in Germany that had prevention from STI as their main lyrical theme, but in a playful way. "Use A Billy Boy" comes to mind. Also, the rap in "Love Message". I'm sure there were more songs of covert condom advertising but cannot come up with any other song title right now. Artists all over the world were raising awareness for prevention of AIDS since the 80s, and doing numerous benefits for the good cause of finding a cure.
Bravo and Dr Sommer was also at the forefront of this. Good to find out that there is mental health content now, too. Not so much in the 90s.
Growing up french canadian I read Julie magazines from france which were similarly formated to the Bravo, I never realized there was no english equivalent to that magazine in Canada!
I'm really looking forward to your book, Lilian
Wow! Germany! We had Teen Beat in the states.
Miss your daily life vlogs and travel vlogs! More of just you guys just doing daily things ❤
My Bravo time was in the 90s and even back then they had the BodyCheck but I think it was fairly new then, think it was a new feature that they included at some point in the 90s. Tbh I was always wondering how those teens could show their faces at school ever again with all their classmates seeing their naked pic in Bravo 😳😅 But I agree that Dr Sommer could be quite helpful when you didn't really feel like talking to your parents about these things. If anything, it made you realize that all kids your age are concerned about similar things and that it's totally normal.
We had a really similar magazine called Dolly in Australia, also had a Dolly Doctor Segment. I looked it up and it stopped printing in 2016.
Cool video cool topic. Nostalgia is great.
Alexis's reactions are really cute in this video!
We had Bravo magazines also in Spain hahaha, but I think it was more about celebrities, romance stories and quizzes.
I have tried so hard to explain this magazine to my American friends! They just can't comprehend the idea 😂
Bravo was helpful and entertaining growing up, but it has been criticized for certain viewpoints as well. For me, for example, it "talked me out of" accepting that I'm bi/ queer when I was 13ish... There was an article that explained bisexuality (this was about 1992, yes I'm that old). The article said something like: bisexuals have a really hard life because they'll always want both a man and a woman and can never be satisfied. I was like, hell no, I don't wanna be like that... It was not a good experience for me for sure, and it took me some years to get over my fear/internalized biphobia!
Bonjour les filles toujours aussis sympa pour les reportages j ai adoré vraiment mercie amitié sincèrement bravos ❤❤❤❤❤
I hope Lilian's book will not be a Kindle-only edition. I've been bummed a couple of times with books by new authors that have only come out on Amazon Kindle, and I'm reluctant to support Amazon. Watermarked pdf, epub or mobi format would be great.
Hi! Will you ever do day in the life vlogs?
Eine geile Idee! Toll!!!!
Hahaha yes until now I remember some of the answers from dr Sommer! Top notch education hehe :)
This video gave me a good laugh. Alexis reaction to the man this different sized testicles 😊. I sorry to hear that!
"Isn't she with a man now? What haPPENED to that kristina?" lmaooo.
Relaxing page !!
Very interesting! Does Bravo also have a section on transgender topics?
You are the most beautiful lesbian couple ❤❤❤ beautiful ladies from Canada and Germany
Scandalous 🤭 well in India there would have been riots if such a magazine was published for teens.. sex was and still is such a taboo topic here. My grandmother would ask me to cover my eyes if a kissing scene showed up in some English show/movie that we were watching. Although we got a glimpse of the sex advice columns in the regular mags and newspaper. Other than that as teens from an all girls school we were obsessed with Sydney Sheldon novels and some Mills & Boons - so unrealistic and tantalising stuff. Haha.
Wait, he only has one, is that normal
I read them and kinda felt they were brainwashing me with sexist stereotypes and norms. One the one hand tBravo encouraged segzual awareness and emancipation in teen girls, but at the same time it replicated solely sexist stereotypes revolving around gender. Don't recall any LGBT visibility but it was the 2000s so maybe it was too early. The magazine also solely focused on what teen girls should look like and behave like, nothing about mental health or intellectual pursuits. My earlier teens were in Toronto and I recall early 2000s Teen Magazine and Claire was much less hypersegzualing teen girls.
Cool video cool topic. Nostalgia is great.
