I have a Midnight KBG monostand here in southern NJ. The way you overcome the late spring green up is by doing two things. First, make sure you do a late fall (1 week or so before Thanksgiving) fertilization with a high nitrogen synthetic. Secondly in the last week of March cut it short to "wake it up" and immediately fertilize again with a high nitrogen synthetic fertilizer. If you do that you will easily shave off at least two weeks of waiting for a green lawn. The only other issue I have is like most KBG, it is prone to disease. However, the way you prevent that is with a few applications applied at the right time of the year of a broad spectrum fungicide like azoxystrobin. As I said, my lawn is 100% Midnight and I get compliments all the time from people passing by telling me its the nicest lawn they've every seen in a neighborhood. Because its a monostand it is very uniform and being KBG it is thick.
Good info. I'm in NE Ohio. What varieties of bluegrass do you like to mix with midnight for those that want a blend? Or, what varieties do you like for the area over midnight?
