I love that Speech because it's true once you fall in love with someone you can't go back to friendship because its impossible knowing what you've been through knowing the things you've done together.
I don't like Spike because he's evil and Spike was planning to kill Buffy but I am a huge fan of Angel/Angelus

Spike was never truly evil. If you don’t get that and you saw the whole series you are not a true fan of Buffy

At this point in the show, I didn't even like Spike that much at all.
Yet, I remember his brutal honesty making a great impression on me.
As the show progresses, I begin to realize just how endearing his honesty could be.

That's an amazing line, and what's most amazing is who it comes from.
That revelation coming from anyone else on the show would ring hollow, but Spike wears his emotions on his sleeve and he's the best one to call out Buffy and Angel for lying to themselves.
This has probably been said dozens of times already, but James Marsters is fucking phenomenal as Spike. When I rewatched this speech, I realized something that was central to Spike's character, even though he's supposed to be the villain here: his deep capacity to love. He may have repressed it, but it's there. Quite a lot- not all, mind you- of Spike's actions are driven by love. He turned his mother, even though it eventually bit him in the ass, because he couldn't bare the thought of eternity without her. He tolerated Angelus and travelled with him because of his love for Drusilla. When he fell in love with Buffy, he actively worked to try to become a better man for her, hence the restoration of his soul. Most of this, of course, was when he didn't have a soul to begin with. Compared to Angel, when he was Angelus, that in itself speaks volumes; even without a soul, Spike was still capable of love. And when he loves, he loves hard, no question. Don't get me wrong, I love Angel as a character, but people aren't exactly wrong when they point out that he was essentially forced to be good when he was cursed. Spike, as mentioned before, actually wanted to change and be better. I think this part of Spike's character is what endeared him to us. And even though Joss Whedon is a shit human being, he can't take that away from us, at least.
The fun thing about Spike is that he was intended to be a throw-away character, appear in a few episodes of season 2 then get dusted, but he proved to be so popular with the fans that Whedon decided to keep him around
I wish they had kept him as a throw-away character.
Well, he was the Big Bad of Season 2, so it was a bit more than a few episodes. But yeah, he made a comeback because of popularity, and I'm really happy for it.
@@monmothma3358 no, people thought he was the Big Bad, and in fact it was Spike himself that coined that phrase, but it turned out that Angelus was the Big Bad of season 2
I am glad Spike became a main character in later seasons. His exit in the final was amazing.
@@monmothma3358 the big bad had a grow spurt (something really bad for a child vampire), so they neeeded him. I see Angelus more like the Big Bad of the season. Spike was going to be dusted by him and Ángelus would runnaway with Dru from Sunnydale.

I can’t help but to feel Angel took this to heart not only because it’s true, but because he has always loved Spikes poems, and I count this speech as a poem.
Funny how that speech of his turned out to suit his and Buffys relationship rather than Angel and Buffys.
Spike did love Buffy, even as a vampire. But you are right, she never loved him back.

How Spike protected her, couldn’t harm her because he was so in love, protected dawn from glory and protected her more when Buffy was dead . When she came back he was so happy and In pain to see her alive. When she started using him to feel something, he thought she finally accepted her attraction and feelings for him so when she told him she was using him he was heartbroken . He tried to rape her because he wanted to prove to himself that she wanted him - and after that he was so disgusted that he went to get the chip removed so he could kill her. But that demon he was fighting saw what he truly needed and gave him his soul. Like angel, spike was a crazy mess after getting his soul. He couldn’t help the gang because of how hurt he was seeing all the horrific things he did... it took angel centuries to pull it together, it took spike less than a year . Spike then helped the slayers train and he helped Buffy through everything. They knew they made eachother better people. Then when he was dying, he still wanted to only protect her and he accepted he was going to be killed. Buffy couldn’t leave him and she told him she loved him because she knew a part of her did, and that he needed to hear it: but overall, she was the slayer and could never love someone again after angel. He knew her and told her she didn’t, and she ran for her life and he died. Spike’s character is so much stronger than angel’s, without a soul he still was a good person
@@kitcat9245 Spike tried to rape Buffy. Spike built a buffy bot to have sex with (extremely gross and obsessive). In S6, Spike continuously took advantage of Buffy depression (telling her she came back wrong, encouraging violence between them, trying to isolate her from her friends by telling her telling her she belonged in the darkness with him) in order to continue having a sexual relationship with her. Spike without a soul loved Buffy as much as a demon could and did seem to possess an ability to care for a select few, but that doesn't make him a good person.
I wouldn't consider soulless Spike a good person. But more trouble character who lost the meaning of love when we first saw him. When he was with Drusilla, his relationship with her was more possessive type relationship thinking that she was trophy girlfriend. Even in this scene Spike mention her like object. That Dru was his and only his. But truth of matter is that it was reversal that Dru was the one who possess Spike and when she finally got sicked with him, she left him for a fungus demon. This left Spike not only broken but lost on how to love somebody right. When he was with Harmony, it was all about rebound sex and possessive relationship but this time with Spike being control over the relationship. It took all the way up to finally loving Buffy that he had to changed on being very possessive to some what more compassionate lover. Don't get me wrong, Spike tried is luck with Buffy by being possessive like when he made Buffy bot but also when he tried to rape her too. But when he was with Buffy more and more, he started to changed. As much has he was helping her protecting and watching over Dawn, Buffy was helping Spike on how to love person right. Even tho, I don't think she knew she was helping him. Since Buffy and soulless Spike relationship was rocky relationship and Buffy life was also rocky life. Like her mother dying and then she dying too but then was reborn again season 6. How Buffy felt kinda empty inside. Something that Spike knew all so well since he was soulless vampire for over 100 years. Of course again, Buffy knew it was mistake being with Spike especially since he didn't have soul. Spike knew it too and it was the reason why he went to those trials to get his soul back. But you can tell that Buffy and Spike were like yin and yang with each other. Even when he was soulless. When he did had soul.. he made huge sacrifice for her. Selfless and compassionate. For that he finally ended up with someone who he truly love and who love him back. For Buffy she ended up with a vampire who love has much (or maybe more) as Angel did. And yes they do end up together in the comics.

I'm team bangel 100% but I did love me some Spike and he was awesome right here!
Spike may come off as lowbrow and rash, but when it comes to people, he's really more insightful than any other character in the show. He understood the Scoobies and their drama better than they did, because being an outsider looking in (for awhile, anyway) made him impartial. He saw the hard truths about them that they didn't want to see, and extended the same level of honesty toward his own flaws.
I've always loved this scene even though he was evil at that time I kind of felt sorry for him. Even in season 4 when we talked about the Chumash Indians when he said the reality of not being able to makeup for what the white people did to them. That they had a choice either kill or be killed take a bloody pick. So brutally honest. When I got to know Spike's character more to season 5 and how he became a vampire I felt more sorry for him and understood. Spike is an ultimate badass.

Plus there's tons of hints that she does. She gives herself away by saying "why does everyone still think I'm in love with Spike", the way she's afraid for him to get hurt, and she tells Angel he's her boyfriend in her heart.
You can not ship it but she clearly did love him.
I never read the comics, and Joss Whedon's take on things changes with time as does everything else in this world. I can only judge Buffy's feelings towards Spike by what is revealed & implied in the show.

I love this part in this episode because Spike has reason. His heart is broken because of Drusilla, but here he is very perceptive because despite of his own suffering he can notice and perceive that despite the things that Angel had done as Angelus in the season past, the feelings of Buffy and Angel are the same, specially when Spike hit Angel in the face the reaction of Buffy is throw him away from Angel. So the words that he says are true because despite Buffy knows how dangerous is Angel as Angelus she hadn't been able to forget her feelings for him and Angel neither. So their love is instantaneous, genuine, passionate and honest because they know very well, and they accepted each other as they are and they don't have the necessity of hide anything. It reminds me the first season of Buffy when Xander told to her that she needs a guy that knows her deepest and darkest secrets and despite of all he say: I love that girl. And in the episode of I Only have eyes for you when Buffy and Angel as Angelus are possessed by Grace Newman and James Stanley, when the spirits finally had gone there is a few seconds where they still holding and they continue kissing each other with the same intensity, and after the kiss they are looking each other directly to the eyes without saying anything and their looks are great because we know that the person who is with Buffy is not Angel....is Angelus!!!! And here the look of Angelus is not a hate look is a love look, but when she call him Angel, she ruined the moment because his reaction is so violent and amazing because he could pull her away from him before but he didn't. So maybe Angelus feels love for her too but is too proud and obsessive to admit it. Here this speech of Spike is astonishing because when he is talking Angel looks Buffy and she down her head unable to answer and the silence of both means too much, because they know inside within that they still love each other. And in the rest of her TV show despite Angel is not there, she always remember him, and she admits how much she loves him and when she sees Angel again after a long time she kiss him again, and he kisses her back so that means it doesn't matter how far they are and with whom that they never stop loving each other. So here is not Spike talking is the poet inside on him. So wise words William!!! You deserve and applause!!!!! Lovers Walk is a great episode. So Spike, Angel and Buffy Forever!!!!
Angel was so simple and boring. Spike was so amazing and entertaining. Time proved him and Buffy were perfect for each other. They had such a good connection you could see it everytime they fought. They were always matched, neither of them had any advantage. It was like their energies were attractive to each other.

Spike's speech was perfect for them. I loved Spike but his character was ruined when it became obsessed with Buffy. She only used him and them had a violent volitile unhealthy relationship that made them both feel worse about themselves. That's not love.

I loved Bangel, but I agree this quote is far more suited to Spuffy. Bangel never hated each other, they loved each other and then Angelus returned and hated Buffy, cos unlike Spike, Angel needs a soul to feel love for Buffy. That's not me taking sides, it's stating facts. A soulless Spike fell for Buffy. A soulless Angel felt nothing but contempt for her to the end.
'You'll fight, you'll shag, and you will hate each other...' Sounds like Buffy and Spike to me, and yes they developed a sweet friendship in Season 7 but even Buffy admitted to Angel and Dawn it ran deeper than that.
SenoritaTorres1 Great points but I can't agree with the one about Angelus feeling nothing for Buffy. He had a ridiculous obsession with Buffy that went past playing mind games with her. The really telling scene would be in the episode where both Angelus and Buffy were possessed by ghosts at the school. When they kissed and the ghosts left them, there was a moment where they just stared into each others eyes- until Buffy ruined the moment by calling him Angel. The later in his lair Angelus is washing himself over and over again and when Drusilla asks him whats wrong he says 'love'.
The difference between soulless Spike and soulless Angel was that Spike was always more empathetic and human vs Angelus who was an alpha vamp with a reputation to keep up. Angelus would have seen any feelings for Buffy as residual contamination from the soul while Spike has a propensity to crazy strong women who abused him.

@azerjaban I completely agree with everything you said. And another point to back up Angelus's obsession with her is in the episode where he is first soulless he tells Spike and Drusilla "to kill this girl, you have to love her." I think that was really telling, because somewhere underneath all of his evil, he still has some sort of feelings for her that I don't think he even understands.
This is why when people say he never loved Darla because he has no soul, I don't believe that is true. I do think it was a different kind of love, no where near what he and Buffy had because he did have soul, but I like to think what he and Darla had was more complex than a vampire that falls in love with the slayer. I wish they could have done more flashbacks to give us a better idea of their dynamic. I know they did in Angel, but just not nearly enough.
@pkbaby I used to think exactly like you, but after rewatching the series and reading other's thoughts on it, I disagree to an extent. I believe that Spike was more contaminated with a soul than other vampires even when he was soulless. But mind you, we are still dealing with a soulless creature trying to understand and express his feelings. To him love was violent and passionate bc it was all he had ever known with Drusilla and even with Buffy. The first time he and Buffy had sex it started with them punching each other and ended with them tearing down a building. She beat him til he could not see one time when he was trying to protect her. Their entire dynamic was violent. He was also so horrified by what he had done with the attempted rape that he went and got his soul for Buffy. I am a hardcore Bangel shipper, but I do have respect for Spuffy and for how the writers explored their relationship, and I even to enjoyed them to some extent.
Spike is right about love, it can be very dangerous and self destructive. You might think you can be friends with your ex-lover, but you know that if you still have feelings, you are leaving those emotional wounds open and adding more salt to them.

people always compare angel (no soul) to spike and I’m just saying spike clearly had somewhat of a soul because he felt things for Drusilla and was jealous unlike angel (no soul) clearly didn’t feel anything it’s sad really because everyone makes out that angel (with a soul) could control himself when he didn’t have a soul it’s really is poor writing because when spike and Buffy develop a relationship they say he got a soul because he loved Buffy like no it’s poor writing or he had a soul from the beginning.

All throughout Season 3 people were pointing out to Angel and Buffy that their relationship wouldn't work. Joyce,Spike ,the Mayor. Until eventually they were forced to realise it themselves.
I just realized that these two men despite how different they are become Buffy’s greatest loves.
I love when spike and angel and buffy are all together in a scene we just need faith it would been great to see them all fighthing together as friends

I wonder which writer had the idea that since Spike is British they could get away with using the word “shag” because I don’t think the network would have allowed them to use the word “screw” (and definitely not anything worse) but this speech doesn’t work without it (and yes I get the irony that actually shagging is what caused their specific problems but in terms of the message he’s pointing out sexual attraction is part of their dynamic and that’s why they can’t be friends)
I am thinking this because when I was a kid I doubt I knew enough British slang to know what he even meant and so it probably went right over my head at the time.

I personally prefer Spuffy because he makes (a lot of) mistakes but tries to fix them zs quickly as possible. He's loyal to the ones he loves, and reliable where Angel might storm off to brood. Also, he wears his heart on his sleeve and I like that about him.
She chose the wrong man, he gave up everything and went against everything he was for her. The moment Angel lost his soul he was a complete twat, Spike, without a soul, loved her and fought against his demon to be a man for her.
@Jaime Bee because Angel was a douche who should have been kicked to the curb. The moment she saw that a soulless vampire could be as much of a man as Angel was with one is where she should have realised he wasn't much of a man at all.
@Jaime Bee Actually they broke up in the comics, realizing they never actually worked as a couple, only as teammates. Also Angel and Buffy were each others soulmates, regardless of whether they ended up together or not, they just never loved anyone else at that same level.

No because once again forces have decided that Buffy and Angel together is bad so they have to once again realise they can never be.
Months or a year or so later THEN Buffy decided with the pushing of friends and family that she should be with spike and they begin for a while.
So again NO, Buffy never has to make a real choice between the two because then it would be them having it be like a absolute decision.

I think that both their respective evil selves are very different. In Angel there was a scene were Angel visits him in the hospital and Spike admits that as a demon he never really tought about the root of evil. He just liked the fun and excitement. He never though about the victims. Whereas, Angelus was into it specifically for the evil. He enjoyed the psychology of it all ( look what he did to Druzilla) all that to say that Angel's path and psychi is way more complicated, has more weight on his shoulder then Spike... Remember its Angel that thought Spike how to be evil...

It’s an American actor doing a decent English accent. It’s far from genuine British English, even as a non-native I can hear him slipping quite often but as far as Americans playing English characters go, he did a good job in my opinion.
