Oh my god I completely forgot about William and his mom... but now it make's perfect sense now... Joyce was the perfect surrogate mum... the mum that William always wanted, after his attempt to save his original mom by turning her into a vampire backfired and he had to kill her... hmm Spike's fondness for Joyce actually make's perfect sense now... beyond the due ex machina that Joyce is just that lovable... thanks :)

Unfortunately Spike did a lot of really questionable... or straight out horrible things in his past, some of which Xander and the rest of the Scoobies were privy to. In the instant with the flowers, Spike was trying to be genuine, but lets be fair, a few nice things wont take away from all the horrible things you did before.
Don't get me wrong I loved spike, but all I'm saying is that I can see were Xander was coming from in thinking the worst from him, that he was trying to be manipulative and take advantage of Buffy's weakened state of mind while she's grieving her mother. Its like a serial killer suddenly having a change of heart and deciding that he will no longer kill people... are you going to be quick to trust him or be nice to him? Spike was pretty much a serial killer before he fell in love, so was Angel I know, but correct me if I'm wrong, Spike did not have his soul back at this point, Angel did when they met him, so as far as anyone knew Spike could go back to killing at any moment.

Spike fit in very well to be in the Summer family. Joyce was motherly figure to Spike which Spike need at times. Spike was older brother to Dawn which he always look out for her. Especially when Buffy died. Spike and Buffy had the passoniate love connection. No matter how bad it can be at times. Spike love Buffy too much to hurt her as much as Buffy fell love with Spike in very end of the show just to realize that she always love him too.

Spike has such a unique and interesting relationship with the whole cast.
He is brilliant when he has conversations with Buffy, Willow, Xander, Giles, Joyce, Drusilla, Angel, Dawn, Tara & even Andrew.

I'd like to imagine after the episode, Joyce and Spike continue go either watch Passions together or atleast discuss the show on a semi regular basis. Spike actually grieving and wanting to leave flowers for her after her passing despite not even having a soul shows how much he cared about and respected Joyce. He didn't do it in an attempt to be noticed and gain favor amongst the scoobies, he did it because she meant something to him and wanted to pay his respects. He didn't want to be seen doing it, he actively tried to avoid anyone noticing.

When Angel didn’t have a soul he came up to Joyce and might have killed her.
With a soul he’s outraged that spike is with her and wants to protect her.
If he knew that Joyce knows he’s a vampire with no soul, socialized with him before, feels safe alone with him. All despite meeting him for the first time by axeing his head to protect Buffy.
She still and always has liked and trusted an unsouled spike more than a souled Angel.
    Why?
Because Angel was with Buffy and hurt her, and spike wasn’t.
