- Bumpers on 2009 models of the Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Mazda 6, and Nissan Maxima performed better than their 2007 predecessors in low-speed crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Bumpers on the 2009 Chevrolet Malibu and 2010 Ford Fusion did worse than earlier models. Get the complete story at TheAutoChannel.com.

the plastic "bumpers" that you see are actually pure design elements to make the car look good. The ACTUAL steel bumper is underneath the plastic, that breaks and costs loads to replace and paint. Older cars had the bumpers on the outside, but be honest, would you buy a modern car with a steel bumper in front of the plastic nose/tail part? If so, you can always aftermarket one ;)
The pain I feel when I hear that crunch is unbearable
In half of these, I would drive the car as it was until I sold it. No way I am paying $500 deductible and higher rates when I barely see any damage.
exactly, unless it damaged important parts like airbag sensors or the radiator.
Hell, most of these would still even pass inspection.
true! if the hood latches, i claim no damage.
I kinda felt like the estimates were not correct. Some of the cars there was literally no damage and the estimate was hundreds of dollars.
I say the same thing every time
It's amazing how expensive it can be for a minor fender bender.
All the pricing they got are with OEM parts, and they can get expansive. One small crack and the IIHS factor in a new bumper cover.
My car was in a light collision. I got a quote for $356 for OEM bumper cover and another $329 to paint it, $134 for the foam behind the bumper, and $109 for the left corner lamp. Almost a grand for parts only.
I repair it myself and get a $13 corner lamp from a salvage yard, a new aftermarket painted bumper cover for $167, and I tape up the foam. About $200.
I'll just strap pillows to the front and back of my car.
bananian lol
Now I feel old
Literally my thought.

"Bumper Bully" is such a product.
8:41 so thats how you get the nissan emblem off!!

not to mention the integrated "bumpers" of modern cars cost a ton of money to replace. My friend got rear ended in his Prius and he had to get the whole rear end bumper unit replaced costing total of $2000 with labor.
We could always go back to the mid 70's metal bumpers with those vertical bumper guards. They were attractive.
I don't get why car manufacturers make the bumper's metal face bar so short....that leaves the corners with nothing but the flimsy plastic bumper cover to protect the headlamp$. Everything else about automotive design and safety has gotten better, but bumpers have regressed. Why???
Because the 2.5mph requirement only covers full-frontal collision. So they cut the cost to just meet the requirements.
Job security. So their auto body shops can charge you more to fix it.
Also they want to sell you stuff from a business standpoint it make total sense why would you pay money to reduce potential profits? I get what your saying though.
Oh! So that's what they do, I'd never fully understood the point of 5 mph bumpers until now. Thanks for uploading this.
did the honda actually repair itself?
crysis860 yeah I have a Honda accord 2012 and A person hit the back of my car and it fixed itself unfortunately after like 3 months I was in a traffic light and one fool rear ended my car he has a suv he was driving 20 mph
@@jdmbro7985 I have a 2018 Honda Accord, and got in two accidents without major damage!
@@Sweetsam013 y'all getting into accidents like its a daily thing to do. No one in my family has ever been in one and we all drive daily.

If someone suddenly stops infront of you the first line of defence is actually adequate distance to that car and awareness of your surroundings at all times. No matter how much you punish their wallets you just can't teach "common sense" to some people.

1970s cars: Crash the wall, wreck the wall.

That’s why you need to be a DIY.
If you were that Mazda, would you even bother repairing it?
No because I'm the Mazda, and it's my owners responsibility.
gone are the days of chrome bumpers.
Ok boomer :v
@@Lianpe98 hey man atleast the good old days had cars and trucks actually made of metal and not pruny cheap plastic
@@GhostToast4810 wow you don't know shit about how cars are made it seems
It's interesting how one car can receive an acceptable rating as opposed all the other cars.
Guys, don't fool yourselves into thinking there is no damage, because you can't see any! What you may not realize, there is hidden damage inside the bumpers, which consists of energy absorbed materials. It absorbs the energy as you bump them the first time, that's why there isn't exterior damage. here is the thing, if you bump it the 2nd time, it won't work. even if you can't see a scratch, you still have to check the energy absorbing material inside the bumper. this is why it's expensive.
@greasycan Yea that's the thing. Cosmetically it doesn't look too bad, but the foam or whatever structure that's inside the bumper gets messed up as well.
Haha! I love how americans calls those cars"mid-size"
Logan Dotson Actually we call them those names (mid size, full size, etc.) because of colloquialism and car classification laws, which vary between countries. In America, we call them mid size because they're past 15.7ft, also since the outskirts of a city (let's say Las Vegas) has a lot of roadroom, however in another country (let's say Britain) it will be considered a large family sedan since it is over 15.4ft, along with Europe being a much smaller chunk of the world due to its huge cities.
how come you see All of the detail in the impact on the second slowmo?
I was like wait what an old ad but then I saw it said 2009 HAHA
why didn't it show the corner tests for the malibu??
Okay.. so im pretty curious.. After these cars go through these bumper tests.. what happends after.. do they get repaired and sent to a brand named dealership/ non-name brand dealership or.. do they get sold in auction for like cheap as is with the damages?
@chevyman1984rebuild it was a rear impact?
nowadays we don't have "bumpers" we have stylish fronts and rears in cars completely against taking an impact
8:41. My Nissan Logo Has Been Stolen. How Are You Going To Tell It's A Nissan?
11:30 - THANKS FOR THE AUTO CHANNEL
Thanks for watching.
the damage costs now in 2020 for those precise models has likely shrank a lot because when this video was made those cars were brand new now they're old.
They don't do these tests anymore, right?
8:43 R.I.P Nissan Bage i loved you
In most case the damage is actualy 0$ because nobody would replace a bumper hit with a speed of 3mph.
flyer203 what if they did 1 mph
The institute is releasing bumper test results
for 6 midsize cars. These tests assessed how
well the bumper protects expensive sheet
metal parts on a car in low speed collisions.
Bumpers are supposed to take the hit in low
speed crashes and keep damage away from
expensive parts like headlamps, fenders and
grills. Bumpers need to be tall so that they
protect the vehicle from underriding other
cars that they hit and they also need to be
wide so that they protect the vehicle's corners.
Our low-speed test look at how well bumpers
are designed to protect your wallet and everyday
fender benders. Your bumper should be the first
line of defense when suddenly someone stops
in front of you or hits you from behind in
commuter traffic.
The institute evaluates low speed crash protection
in a series of 4 tests. Each vehicle hits this barrier
which is designed to replicate a typical car bumper.
It has an energy absorber and a bumper cover.
Front and rear impacts will run at 6 mph and front
and rear corner impacts will run at 3 mph. Only one
vehicle earns an acceptable rating, 5 others earns
a rating of marginal or poor.
The Mazda 6 is the best performer in this group
and the only vehicle to earn an acceptable rating.
Its bumpers are wider, taller and higher off the
ground than the 2007 model. This kept damage
cost below $800 in 3 of the 4 tests. Mazda is
looking out for their buyer's pocket books
while other manufacturers aren't paying so
much attention.
Do you have any footage on the damage a 2020 cadillac suv does to a 2007 Hyundai Sonata rear to rear collision. I desperately need it.
why so specific?
What about bash bars?
Are they still doing this in 2020
why wasn't the camry tested?
Even at low speeds that's a lot of damage
In what world would the costs of these repairs be so high?
thing thing is, these cars are on low speeds and that doesn't help with reality.
Excellent Ebs ! these are for consumer advice, not safety.
do they fix the cars and then sell them, or trash them completely?
I want SUV's and pickups to have high ground clearance again.
Why did they do the Maxima and not the Altima?
at 2.08 - is the headlight made out of High Density Polythene or sumtin?!
What about the Camry?
The test bar is obviously not representative of the height of the "average car's" crash bar, considering every car tested underrode/was pushed downward. The test bar is clearly higher.
@Techmen93 I care, it directly affects my rates.
It really depends what type of vehicle you hit, or hits you. If you hit a car with bumpers at the same height as your car, then there might be no visible damage. But, if you smack the back of a delivery truck, then you might pierce your hood and shatter your windshield.
8:43 GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hahaha the nissan badge came off on the front test lol
@wtrdogg20 If the front corner of the mazda 6 is the weakest part of it. Its more acceptable than the entire front end. Its easier and cheaper to pull a fender, and replace a headlamp and the cover, vs pull the frame on which the impact bar is mounted as well as both headlamps, and the radiator brackets.
But as i said earlier again. They base the entire rating on the average damage cost. Yes they post the cost per test prior to each test. but it is based on an average.
I have a silver 09 Mazda 6, it's a great car.
2004 Nissan quest did well on 5 miles per hour crash
Even a 6 MPH crash looks bad
Today I saw a Chevy Malibu around the same year that rear ended a corolla and there was significant damage to the Chevy lol
Wonder what's the sad part is maybe the Chevy Malibu the 2008 to 2012 fail the soul bumper test but it still beat everybody else in the iihs top safety rating in five stars of good so is it even trade off
@greasycan coz the bumper needs to be fixed and repainted
even back in 1973-74 the government required 5 mph hits direct and 2.5 mph corner. They relaxed that in 1982 for lighter weight and fuel economy. SO running at 6 and 3 mph is more than the government required on land yachts in the 70s
same :), but other drivers are a little more clumsy then us.
@vintimv001 Damage to the underside. The stuff you cant see without looking!
GREAT JOB MAZDA!!!
Hoy tuve un choque a esa velocidad por. Venir mandando un mensaje
More than half of these crashes I would not fix them.
the taurus is a large sized sedan.
This is sickening to watch! Such minor damage and it is nearing 2,000 bucks at times? Why are the bumpers so damn flimsy and expensive? I had a 1979 Honda Accord that I rearended a pickup in. My car had no damage, couldn't even tell the accident had happened. The bumper of the pickup was pushed underneath and EXPENSIVE. Why these bumpers flimsy expensive things?!? confuses me.
PAINT IS WHY IT"S SO HIGH...
A new cover is only like 200 bucks.. but prep paint etc is what the places charge up the ass for...
a new bumper absorber the styrofoam maybe 60 bucks but a deeler will charge you liek 200 for labor
i would like to know what gets damidged your just throwing out numbers
Please rewrite and re-submit your comment. We can't figure out what you are referring to.
1500 dollars for little dent!?
Ok who kicked the tail light lol 9:26
I wonder how can the left one break while the right one is still intact, its a full overlap test. And theres much less differences between left rear and right rear bumper than the both sides of front bumper
i want naormal version not slow motion
5:38 headbump ;D
bumper covers usually are made out of plastic
In most of these the person wouldn’t even bother fixing it
@NewtProductions Prob mostly labor, and like 5$ worth of foam that they charge 235 for.. LOL
But this isn't a didn't brake soon enough and rear ended a car test bro. this is a 5 mph (avg parking lot speed) bumper test. They didn't hit the brakes because that variable would ruin the 5 mph bench mark they set to test each bumper's durability.
These are scientists bro, they know what there doing.
that little cute accident cost ~1000$ ???
so if one of these cars hit a tree @60m/h
how much would it cost ?
And try 07 Chevy suburban
bumpers are pretty bouncy
oh right gotcha...
9:32... no more than 200 dollars at private repair shop... all that broke is a break light.
$742 for the first one?? yeah right at 6 mph there isn't even any damage. at that speed the damage is $000, just drive away not even a scratch.
8 people have a malibu
I think the 2009 sonata did well..
its what you can't see that gets damaged.
doesnt look bad from afar but maybe up close it bad
I have never backed into anything with my car.
regardless of your car, it's gonna cost $500-$600 for just the bumper
Instead of plastic they should make it out of thick metal that way you smash someone at like 20 miles an hour and it wont have any dents or scratches let alone repair costs!
Well that's expensive at least ,Hyundai, mazda and Honda improved....but the worst performers were the Maxima,Fusion and Malibu......
its the prices from dealer repair shots which are bullshit.... your regular repair shops you would pay 200 cash tops. unless of course you want to milk ur insurance.
do i really care is if have to pay a couple of $100 dollars to sort it out? this is america here not uganda
The sad thing is that my 1973 Chrysler could pass all those tests with no damage.
cleatrampler yep same with my marquis

lol, i thought that bumpers were made to save lives of the people the car hit xD But apperently not in the states

minor, hardly-visible damage on the bumper...and 700, 1800 and 2000dollars?? How?
