    If GM hadn't dropped Saab they might have been the safest car on the road today.

    • @OlegKostoglatov
      @OlegKostoglatov 10 років тому +5

      Most of the last Saab's made under G.M's reign were just rebadged Chebby Malibus and Suburbans, with a higher price tag.

    • @FantomLightning
      @FantomLightning 10 років тому +2

      OlegKostoglatov Uh, no, try again. Only SUV they sold was based on TrailBlazer. That and the last gen 9-5 were the only vehicles not significantly improved/modified from their GM platform mates.

    • @OlegKostoglatov
      @OlegKostoglatov 10 років тому +1

      FantomLightning Splitting hairs there, Trail Blazer, Suburban, so it was a rebadged GMC rather then a re-badged Chebby, again with a higher price tag. I can tell by your avatar that you are a SAAB fan, but don't kid yourself, they haven't made a real SAAB in years. It's just like the Australian Holdens, more or less the same cars made under the Opel and Vauxhaul names, but with a slightly different selection of engines, most of the design and engineering takes place in Detroit, but people are still fooled into believing they are an all Australian car.

    • @FantomLightning
      @FantomLightning 10 років тому +2

      NO! Are you so ignorant that you think the Suburban and TrailBlazer are the same?!? They're on totally different platforms en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_TrailBlazer en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Suburban. Saying they're the same doesn't really work when Saab made changes to every single platform to make it safer and drive better, shown when you look up real world crash statistics and compare something like a Mailbu and 9-3 both on Epsilon. Most GM cars are based on the Euro design influenced Opel/Vauxhall, who are even accredited with the design of the platforms. Only true Detroit platforms left are the full frame trucks and SUVs aka GMT8/900 vehicles.

      it's called SAAB was making there cars safer, but at the same time killing themselves at the same time. Like a 650pound man named Bob that worked for AT&T and then was bed ridden because he fell off his balcony and all the fat around him helped, but his spleen still tore open. A analogy for SAAB jumping for safety and revamping their cars, but in the end killing themselves because GM wasn't having it.

    Automakers when they did the offset test: "You can't just base a cars crash performance off of one test! There many different scenarios that happen in the real world!"
    IIHS: "Okay, we'll start testing for side impact crashes too"
    Automakers: "Wait hold on.........many different scenarios!!"

    The Volvo S40 was a badge engineered Ford. I few years ago I struck a Saab 9-5 in the side. I was driving a Ford Transit Van at 20 mph. Ford was totaled and I was unable to open the door. Saab had no visible damage and drove me home.

    Why didn't the Jaguar X-Type get a Poor? Brian O'Neal (the IIHS President at the time this aired) said, "The person in a crash like this is going to sustain multiple rib fractures and organ injuries, but the head is protected. That's small comfort if your dying from torso injuries."

    people might think me crazy for taking my cars apart like I do, but there are reasons behind it, namely performance and safety.
    like my 1997 Mitsubishi Mirage coupe. for what I had in mind for it, I had to strip it. had to find ways to subtly incorperate items for increased chassis rigidity and stiffness, even though it was probably more than 300kg I added to it. things like door bars, stiffening components to the firewall and footwell, reinforced bumpers, B pillar, roof rails, floor rails, and other spots.

      Agreed! Way more trustworthy that the government's outdated testing program liar Elon Musk keeps on boasting about how well his cars do in. His Model S, for example, got a top score in the government's test, but only got an acceptable in the much-tougher IIHS.

Do you know, he is one of the largest recipients of corporate welfare with subsidies, bailouts, tax credits and rebates to his company? It would make you furious on corporate welfare.

    Saab has always looked at performance in all tests including real world accidents. In fact in real world results the top 3 vehicles from around 0-4 to 08 (I think those were the years) were a Saab, a Mercedes, and a Toyota. There was a crash test years ago of a classic 900 in a side impact with a Land Rover Discovery, the only injuries would have been from glass fragments in the skin.

    Unfortunately Volvo got it's reputation a long time ago and while they still go the extra mile to make their cars safer that S40 is basically a Ford Focus but it still did well in this test. Volvo can do more, my 1993 has Side Impact Air Bags, long before they were required.

    solution: you use steel that can withstand the impact and at the same time, you bore spikes into the ground right before impact, so that the care doesn't move; problem solved.

      Jason Hunter you want the car to move

    • @tumble0weed
      @tumble0weed 6 років тому

      i was thinking the opposite, make it so the wheels move with the crash slightly to the side and take some of the impact, but stop you somewhat quickly as well. if the car doesn't move, the object has to absorb to whole impact. that would be terrible.
