2012 is a huge guilty pleasure for me. It is kind of the ultimate disaster movie.
Omg the earthquake in LA just leaves me in awe each time
And the dog holds a special place in my heart (I had one exactly like him)
"Mars Attacks" is comic genius. Universal Sign of the Doughnut to all!
@@lefantomer it's perfect 😁
Its complete garbage tbh
For natural disasters I love Dante's Peak. For man-made disasters it is The Towering Inferno.
It came out about the same time as .
Dante’s Peak is a highly underrated and under appreciated movie
The Towering Inferno is my favorite 1970s disaster film. Dante's Peak has some pretty decent special effects.
I was thinking that Dante's Peak should be on this list.
Dante’s Peak is extremely accurate too.
"San Andreas" may have had mixed reviews, but I think it holds up really well.
Deepwater Horizon was so good and so underrated I was so impressed with this movie.
Total agreement. Love that movie. Also, it was about time we finally got a movie with hardworking blue-collar workers as the hero.
I loved the song at the end.
Has anyone seen GREENLAND with Gerard Butler?
That was a really good movie.
While I think Greenland wasn't as good of an Asteroid movie as others have been, I do think Greenland had the most realistic and up-close take on how society and individuals would act once everyone knows that the end of the world truly is nigh.
Yes I did. I liked it
Yes and it is very good!
@@scailliet Not the greatest but the first half hour or so is right up there.
Twister, Volcano, Dante's Peak, The Room (that was a DISASTER film)
I was thinking Dante's Peak myself.
twister isnt underrated, its arguably the most loved disaster film.
Dante's peak is one of my fav disaster movies
The Room was one of thee most boring movies ever! 👎
Twister is a classic! Dante's Peak is a cult classic!
How the hell is "The China Syndrome" underrated?! It's literally one of cinemas biggest game changers!
totally agreed. the movie had tons of nominations from everyone, including 4 Oscars. how is that "underrated"? 😁😁😁😁
Happy to see Andromeda Strain on here, the 1970's one. Also, I would add Dante's Peak. Clearly this list needs even more Pierce Brosnan.
2006 "Poseidon" gets too much hate IMO. Good remake with great effects.
Agreed! Watched it a few weeks ago! I have a friend who takes lots of cruises, and every time he's on a boat, I end up thinking about this film!
1970's Poseidon in a Times Square theater with surround sound and those alarms going off all around us!!
It's great movie
Including _Mars Attacks!_ makes the Martian leader in me go, “Ack! Ack!”
Martians running around the spacecraft in their underwear...
“Only the brave” and “deep water horizon” hit the hardest for this workin man.
What about Outbreak?
Excellent movie.
And Contagion!
Both not underrated so not on list
I saw “Deepwater Horizon” at least twice in the theater. Awesome movie!
Deepwater Horizon is one of my personal favorites. Sad for those who lost their lives and all the wildlife in the ocean that suffered.
Volcano dantes peak and twister
Miracle Mile is one of my favorites. My sister just surprised my 15 yo son with the DVD which he was thrilled about. His favorite disaster movie before that was Deepwater Horizon which is another underrated disaster flick. He's planning on us having a watch party for his birthday. The Core is grade A certified cheese and I'm so here for it. Disaster movies are always a yes for my family.
I’d add Pompeii
@@jakealter5504 also a great one
I do like watching Greenland, it’s a great underrated gem.
As a Californian whom has had various wildfires within 2 miles of my home my whole life, “Only the Brave” brings me to tears in gratitude
To me, a disaster film has to involve an actual disaster, purely of manmade or natural origin. Therefore, films such as Independence Day and Mars Attacks don't count since they're films about alien invasions.
Aliens are natural beings in the universe like wht 😂😂😂😂
@@thedevilsrockstxr2309 They still use technology, and if it isn't made by humans, it's not manmade. It still doesn't count.
the destruction of cities dont count if there are aliens?
is really a sea story.
I'll never forget seeing The Perfect Storm at the theatres
Deep impact was my favorite on the list. 🎉
Ditto.
🥉
2012, Volcano, San Andreas, War of the Worlds, Outbreak, The Happening, Independence Day (It counts) and Day After Tomorrow are some of my favorites. I really liked A Perfect Storm. Great cast.
“Only the Brave” is a great movie. Everyone should watch this.
I happened across Miracle Mile while I was in college and I couldn’t believe just how chilling it was. I’ve only ever watched it one more time after this but it’s left a long lasting impression because of how real it all felt. Indeed seriously underrated.
I didn't realize Tim Burton did Mars Attacks... I love that movie
Disaster movies are one of the only genres that can be terrible and still awesome at the same time. I love the cheap indies with awful effects, it's my favorite cinema junk food.
spotted the Sharknado fan.
Dante’s Peak, Ice Road, and The Arrival with Charlie Sheen should be add to the list too.
The Arrival is an alien invasion, not a natural disaster. Alien invasions might be disastrous, but they aren't disasters.
Thank You WatchMojo For Top 10 Underrated Disaster Movies Of All Time.
🥈
"Only the Brave" is extremely moving. If you listen to the audio of the real event, Josh Brolin nailed it, he got his character's voice perfectly in that final communication
0:25 I love the Core, no matter is underrated but it's science!
What about the 1950 film, 'Panic In The Streets'?
Directed by Elia Kazan and starring Richard Widmark and Jack Palance, it is the tale of a government health officer (Widmark) discovering that someone in New Orleans has the "pneumomic plague", a respiratory version of the bubonic plague, and Widmark must find "Patient Zero" before New Orleans, and possibly all of America, is wiped out by the contagion.
The same year there was a somewhat similar British movie .
@@Blaqjaqshellaq
I don't recall, but 'Panic' was probably an Eagle Lion Picture.
They were a British / American low-budget film studio.
I forgot to mention, the British movie's title was SEVEN DAYS TO NOON.
@@Blaqjaqshellaq
I'll see if I can find that.
Thanks! ✌
Only The Brave was heartbreaking. My favorites are Towering Inferno, Atomic Twister, Category 6:Day of Destruction and just for the fun of it Lavalantua.
Dante’s Peak should be here. A rare disaster movie that doesn’t get absolutely ludicrous to be an effective watch
I like how the last word of the Mars Attack segment is "China," then the China Syndrome segment starts. Nice!
The core was a great movie, I rather watch it any day of the week than watch Moonfall.
The cast is what made that movie work. The science is trash, but the acting talent and chemistry is off the charts
Fave Disaster films: The Towering Inferno, The Poseidon Adventure (the Original under Irwin Allen), & Armageddon.
The Perfect Storm is one of my favorite disaster movies. It’s the most realistic disaster movie I know.
I love a good disaster flick...my faves are 'Earthquake', 'Dantes Peak', 'The Day After Tomorrow', (burn all the books on TAX laws, you idiots!) and 'The Wave' (love that one) and of course, 'Twister'--that was filmed not far from here. Had the film crews come in to where I worked when they were shooting locations. They were all excited when the storm warnings came on the radio and said they hoped they would see a REAL tornado--my reply was "No You Don't"...
For those who don't mind subtitles, Norway's "The Wave" from 2015 is worth checking out.
Kristian, an arrogant but gifted geologist, is tasked with monitoring the steep and geologically unstable coastal canyons of the fjords--where a tsunami set off by a landslide can rampage for miles before reaching the open sea. With such conditions, you'd think nobody would build along the cliffs where the only routes of escape are narrow switchback roads. So of course, where does Kristian's estranged wife work? In a cliff-side hotel...
I didn't go in expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised. The plot gets off to a slow start, a common issue in the genre, but once it picks up moment the tension barely lets off until the very end. While it doesn't break any new ground or wander too far from the common genre tropes, it remains fairly grounded in the unique challenges of the setting and each character's fight for survival.
Solid performances and special FX overall make for a decent flick.
Deepwater Horizon is a helluva film. You really feel like you are with those people on that rig as it's about to blow.
the best thing about Miracle Mile is that you actually feel the tension because you don't know if everything is real or not until about the last 15- 20 minutes of the movie
"ONLY THE BRAVE" (2017) thumbs up!
If you ever get a chance, UA-cam Only The Brave movie clips and then UA-cam real radio traffic from the Yarnell Hill fire. Josh Brolin nailed the way Eric Marsh sounded in real life and the film is such a fitting tribute to those heroes we lost.
Thank you for the update, WatchMojo..!! The Towering Inferno (1974) and Earthquake (1974) were good movies to watch. 🤣
core was so good. Scientifically i dont know how accurate it was but it was good.
It's actually well known as one of the least scientifically accurate movies of all time. Great movie though!
Andromeda Strain is freaking fantastic!!! One of my all time favorites!!
The book is a really good read too.xx
ah man , I loved 'The Core' !!!
anything that involves an alien invasion isn't a disaster flick, it's a war movie.
"These Final Hours" should be on this list.
Volcano with Tommy Lee Jones is underrated
Love it - the coast is toast…xx
Love it - the coast is toast…xx
I stream most of this list at least once a year. All are favorites and truly underrated.
Dante's peak is one of my favorites. And i also really like The day after tomorrow.
The Core low key one of my favorite movies… shhh don’t tell anyone
Definitely feel like Armageddon, Dante’s Peak, and Volcano should’ve made the list. Yeah, they all had lots of scientific inaccuracies, but they were still really good fun movies
Enjoyed all these movies. far better than modern movies as they relied on actors and story telling
Ditch 'The Core' and 'Meteor' and replace them with 'Outbreak' and either 'The Wave' or 'Into the Storm', and this would be a perfect list. Love the inclusion of 'Mars Attacks'!
Oh yes...The Wave--but watch it with the sound way down and with subtitles
I love the China syndrome and Deep Water Horizon!
Deep Impact is not underrated, everyone knows its a great movie, even better than Armageddon
Only the Brave makes me cry every time I watch it, it's so incredibly good!
Deep Impact is one of my favorite disaster movies.
one point about "the perfect storm", the soundtrack made this movie memorable, like the tune in Armageddon, perfect score for the movie, one bar of it, and you know the movie it's from.
Speaking of, I was watching _Jumanji_ and noticed James Horner used a few cues of that score for _The Perfect Storm_
Geostorm is a guilty pleasure of mine. Love me some Gerard Butler❤ Also, I really liked the Poseidon remake as well. It was a nice update to the original. The capsizing scene was amazing.
Seeking a Friend for the end of the World took the “a meteor is going to wipe us out” story and lead off with the total failure of the obligatory heroic mission to stop it and instead showed humanity collapsing as they slowly came to terms with the inevitable.
I've always wondered why Michael Criton's work doesn't emphasize that he was a physician and his M.D. had a lot to do with his projects. It's sad that he dies so young as I'm certain he had more to say.
I'm not sure this counts as it's more post-apocalyptic than disaster, but my guilty pleasure film is Damnation Alley.
Early 90s made for tv movie the big one:the great Los Angeles earthquake
I really enjoyed deep impact and I like most disasters movies out there, fantastic job watch mojo.
As someone with a degree in Geology, I love the movie The Core. There is so much wrong in it, that its a blast to watch. Kinda like Sharknado lol
Firestorm (Wings Hauser), Lightning: Fire From The Sky (Jesse Eisenberg).
I enjoyed The Core. I don't see Perfect Storm and Deepwater Horizon as underrated. If you count mini series Atomic Train was also good. As others have said Dante's Peak and Volcano are others
Category 6 Day of Destruction is one of my favorite disaster movies and is very underrated, especially for a TV movie. It has good acting from Randy Quaid, Thomas Gibson who would just a year later go on to do Criminal Minds, and even Brian Dennehy. Not to mention, the CGI in it still looks great to this day. Highly recommend checking it out.
Seeking a friend for the end of the world
If unbelievable, inaccurate disaster movies are a guilty pleasure for you (much like they are for me) then I urge you to watch the Scorpion TV Series. Each episode is like a 45 minute disaster movie, they try to root it in science but they take a lot of creative liberties and do away with science from time to time. Either way, if you like disaster movies, you'll probably like Scorpion!
I would never classify Only The Brave as a disaster flick. It demeans the film's importance an emotional impact. Forest fires themselves can be considered disasters, but the film never focuses on them, nor does it depict the Hotshots as "superheroes". It's a powerful film with an ending among the most gut wrenching in film history. To call it a disaster film lessens it.
2012 and Moonfall, both directed by Rolland Emmerich.
If you disconnect your brain like with any of Michael Bays transformers, Moonfall was actually enjoyable.
@@jacara1981 oh, sorry! 😅😅
What about Daylight?! People mainly didn’t like it because Stallone wasn’t shooting bad guys in the face, but come on!
Saw the core in theatres, I was 14, it was awesome
Not sure how you can count these all as underrated.
Nasum - Fear of the China Syndrome is a great song.
No Escapes (2020)
Mira (2022)
Not sure if this counts but Cloverfield. I can watch that over and over.
Deep impact was a great film and much more realistic. It was also the first time a black president was seen on screen. I remember applause when he walked out on screen.
I loved Deepwater Horizon what a great underrated movie and a shocking true story and great performances by the actors it fells so real and your scared for all of them and shocked that they all did not die sadly 11 people died in that disaster.
Always liked Airport, The Towering Inferno, and The Posiedon Adventure.
Before being produced, MIRACLE MILE had been declared one of Hollywood's best unproduced scripts.
How did I miss seeing Miracle Mile?
I'm a huge fan of all the rest.
Do catch it! I loved the movie. And watch out for the exhibit on the evolution of life - methinks Fat Boy Slim used the idea for his music video Right Here, Right Now
I love The Core and Deep Impact
I really enjoyed Deep Impact...it's one of my favorite disaster movies. I think it was a much better film then Armageddon.
I cry at Deep Impact when the meteor hits the Earth and the effects after
"Geostorm" was panned on release, but does it have redeeming qualities?
Honestly, they need to split this list into disaster movies and real disasters docudramas.
I thought The Core movie was good. I like how that hacker turned from a trouble maker to a boy who prevented evil people from turning the core into a weapon and used his talent to make sure everyone knows the heroic sacrifices the heroes made.
Volcano (1997)
That would be on a bad disaster movie list.
I’d add Pompeii
The Finest Hours I thought deserved better. Not many movies about ship disasters are made. I would truly like to see a movie about the Edmund Fitzgerald.
I miss San Andreas
Volcano???
Both 2012 and Pompeii should of made this list.
I loved the core!
A movie about a doll (Barbie) makes a billion dollars but a great movie about sacrifice Only the Brave flops it just proves what the world is today bland and listless
Sign of the times
