I didn’t think Crash Bandicoot was that difficult to beat compared to other 3D platformers. But getting 100% was ridiculously hard, especially compared to Crash 2 and 3.
I kinda agree. What I disagree with is that beating it 100% is super hard. It's really not once you know the ropes in the game or even know some speedrunning tricks to avoid backtracking
Crash 1 is absolutely the hardest of the original Crash trilogy and is still the hardest mainline Crash game of the entire franchise. In addition to the "less refined" movement and controls; getting a gem required breaking every box in the main level AND not dying a single time. But the hardest part was that you could NOT manually save the game whenever you wanted. You had to either complete the bonus round- which you only get one attempt at per level try- or get a gem to get an opportunity to save the game. Which means if you are struggling with just completing levels for a generic finish, a single "game over" would force you to redo multiple levels you ALREADY struggled to beat again to get back to where you were at-costing precious time and lives in advancing the game. You can be stuck at same place for years. Still have not beaten original PS1 version and is still the hardest. And all of this is WITHOUT Stormy Ascent which was originally planned to be the last level before fighting Cortex. As tough as the remake was; the ability to save after each level made it exponentially easier than the original.
We can’t forget about the levels where you can’t lose any lives in order to get a colored gem and remember in Crash 2 there’s 155 boxes and you can’t lose any lives and in Crash 3 I always hated the racing levels including Rings of Power
Honorable Mention Yugioh: The Forbidden Memories a.k.a The ultimate RNG nightmare. This infamous card simulator and RPG used a unique set of rules requiring the player to memorize specific monster fusions to advance through a gauntlet of extremely difficult duels where a single loss means "Game Over" along with no auto save and manual saves are easy to forget. But wait there's more... its end game boss rush features 6 (possibly 7 if you missed a side quest) brutal duels in a row where 2 of them (Seto 3 and Nightmare) may literally decide that you lose before the duel starts playing a monster more powerful than anything you are allowed to play without cheat codes where again- a single loss means starting the whole sequence over again. But worst of all... the game's infamous card acquisition system meant it was difficult and tedious to obtain better cards. The best cards are hidden behind a minimum score requirement among only specific characters in free-play mode who must be beaten to unlock, and even then a low chance of getting them; as in possibly dozens to HUNDREDS of attempts (not an exaggeration). And don't think you can just "buy" cards either. Each duel would only give up to 5 star points, where many cards required hundreds to as many as 999,999 stars to buy JUST ONE COPY. And remember... in the PS1 era, players didn't have the internet resources we have today to make a run of the game much easier.
I came here to say the same thing, but glad someone else mentioned it first. I had to rewind to hear what he said. I very much doubt it will ever come back 😢
I beat Tenchu 1 for the first time a few weeks ago and most of the difficulty came from the fact that enemies can see you before you see them due to the draw distance being relative to the camera. Since the camera is further behind your character it gives the enemies in the game a HUGE advantage.
Armored Core Master of Arena without any human plus cheats. While the controls can be a challenge themselves for new comers, the final mission and boss battle against nineball seraph is one of the most difficult fights in AC history and on the PS1. Easily somewhere in the top 10 for having one of the hardest PS1 boss battles (a different list), and this is coming from an Armored Core veteran. Even 20+ years later, that mission can still give me a hard time. That final battle is Fromsoft's way of giving you the middle finger one last time to end the PS1 era of AC games.
TR3 on PC let you save anywhere as often as you wanted (like the previous 2 games), but for some reason they decided to implement this "save crystal" feature on PS. So stupid.
Crash Bandicoot 2 was a lot harder for me Especially when it comes to collecting all the stones and breaking all the crates, even the most hidden ones It was so hard that I had to watch a walkthrough after 6 years of trying and failing
Crash games got easier with each release. Crash 1 was more difficult than fun. Crash 2 was a bit of both but a lot more enjoyable. Crash 3 was just pure blast enjoyment and way too easy compared to 1 and 2.
Tomb Raider 3 is my most favorite Tomb Raider, which I know for many it's different. But that game is very personal to me. ❤ Tomb Raider 1 definitely gets hard later on, and The Opera House Level of 2 is the most difficult level in that game I came across. TR3 could get difficult depending on the level. The first 2 are obviously great too same with later titles after 3.
I recently started playing " Heart of Darkness" again because I played it when I was a teenager and let me tell you it's oddly hard but satisfying at the same time
Ahah I've played beaten the PS version of Driver a few months ago, but I had already finished the PC version more than 20 years ago. Great memories! That tutorial took me a couple of hours back in the day, but now it was pretty easy =) The final level, though... I think I can't beat it without lowering the difficulty, it's that brutal.
Games from that era were probably the most difficult I've ever played. I owned so many PS1 games over the years & completed very few. Even other kids games like Croc 1 & 2, Jersey Devil, 40 Winks, Medievil could all get very tough... Another one I just remembered that's not on the list is Alien Resurrection.
When i was 10 years old, Tenchu was at the bottom of my collection for a few reasons. It was R18+ rated. my older cousin got me a secret copy. it was scary. it was really difficult. i only took it out to admire the album art, dream of one day mastering it, and whenever my cousin played it.
Y'all should research and do a top 20 on companies that make way different stuff...For example Yamaha makes Motorcycles, but also make pianos lol. I think that would be an interesting list.
I'd say that Tomb Raider III. is very difficult not necessarily because of its numerous traps and level design but because of its limited saving system. Still my fav in the series btw.
Driver never gave me an issue for that first level, it was the last level that was a pain. Turns out though that there's actually a tutorial in the options or something that teaches you that list of moves you have to do. Idk if I don't remember it or just overlooked it like so many seem to have done
Only PlayStation games I played, Spyro, crash bandicoot 3, CTR and need for speed 2 thru Porsche unleashed. It was that need for speed that I had more trouble with.
I am 29 and feel vindicated at last! And I thought I was just a really lousy gamer. I guess two things can be true at once. I smashed more ps2 controlelrs than game levels.
I remember being in middle school and getting invited to kids houses to spend the night just so I could beat the tutorial on Driver, so they could actually play the game 😂

I took Spyro Reignited Trilogy back to GameStop after failing more than a thousand times in ICY SPEEDWAY and giving up on GULP'S OVERLOOK.
The remake of Xevious should be near the top on this. Had limited continues (remember those?), and no matter how many times I replayed it, never could get past the 3rd stage.
Final fantasy 8, In The Hunt, completing alot of the Gran Turismo races (1 and 2) are just a few of some of the hardest games ive played on the ps1. Never completed any of those.
Worlds Scariest Police Chases (2001) Now It's been so long since I saw Worlds Wildest Police Videos (1998-2002;2012) but that game made an episode of the titular show seem like Casablanca by comparison because they spam the same mission twice and It just gets harder and harder maybe 20th Century Fox should've reconsidered adapting the show Into video game form
I still have not beaten Crash Bandicoot to this day and I've owned that game for 24 years, it's the only game I've never beaten. I still try from time to time, still have my save file from all those years ago.
Have you heard of Jupiter Strike? It's a Star Fox clone without powerups, save files, or continues, or even checkpoints. And the first boss will obliterate you with ease due to shoddy gameplay.
Hey, WatchMojo. Can you please do a list of the Top 50 SNES Soundtracks? I have a list of examples of these soundtracks from Nintendo's 16-bit console you guys should mention. Examples: Plok! 2:43 that gameplay reminds me of Dreams to Reality which was absolutely ambitious but ultimately felt absolutely broken. correction: Wait, i forgot that the PS1 version is basically a completely different game
I actually got pretty far in driver myself. When I used to have it before getting rid of it, I don't remember what year it was. There was a time when I tried doing the parking garage. Tutorial level again. And I could never beat it. So I think I've only ever been able to beat it once.
I can't tell you how many death cut scenes I saw in Heart of Darkness. It's a good thing you got infinite lives otherwise the game would be over in the first 5 minutes.
Two that didn't make the list were Metal Gear Solid and Medievil were tough for me. Contrary to that, I found the Crash Bandicoot series much easier in terms of gameplay
I'm surprised Yu-Gi-Oh Forbidden Memories isn't on this list. Its one of the hardest PS1 games, AND one of the hardest Yu-Gi-Oh video games, of all time.

The first crash is amazing despite the difficulty
The best era of gaming, in my opinion.
Some genres arguably so...Others, not so much.
Don’t let the PS2 fanboys here that lol
Almost every game were ”Dark Souls” of their genre.
I completely disagree. The graphics were groundbreaking, but the games aged poorly imo. Imo, super nintendo games aged better.
Crash is an iconic game and will always be a classic.
I agree with that
Crash bandicoot bridge in the sky level is pure saw-like torture porn
Yeah. Fuck that level!!
We can’t forget about the levels where you can’t lose any lives in order to get a colored gem and remember in Crash 2 there’s 155 boxes and you can’t lose any lives and in Crash 3 I always hated the racing levels including Rings of Power

Sekiro is the closes we will get 😢
Bushido Blade comes to mind for me.
Oh hell yes, especially with one hit kills. 😳
Oh man... unlocking second endings and Katze appears just to break all Bushido rules and just shoots you mid sentence 😭
Crash Bandicoot is still one of my favorite Playstation Games but some of the levels made me scream. I miss those days.
I see your comment in another Watchmojo comment section, you said you play as Bayonetta in SSBU. I use Pythra.
There is no release yet for vagret story. You got me excited thinking i missed this great news

One of the reasons why Abe's Oddysee, Crash Bandicoot and, especially TR3, are all so damn frustrating is that they lack a simple quick save feature.

Rayman at 20? OK I already know this list is wack. Rayman 1 is notoriously hard on ps1, I'd easily put it in top 5.
I would personally swap Rayman's and Crash Bandicoot's positions.
At least I could complete the latter!
What’s funny is that the previous incarnation of this list had this at the #2 spot. What happened here?

Reasonable validation. I conquered Abe’s Odyssey, Twisted Metal II and alllll the Crash Bandicoots. 👍
What made things really difficult is siblings who deleted my save data

When did Vagrant Story get a re-release?
I Loved Rayman the problem was all the powers you needed to make the levels easier came way too late in the game.
Pandemonium needed to be in the top 5 of this list, that game was just evil. Also Rayman at 20?! You guys trolling us haha.
I'd say that Tomb Raider III. is very difficult not necessarily because of its numerous traps and level design but because of its limited saving system. Still my fav in the series btw.

Would you mind doing this list, WatchMojo?
So. No Johnny Bazooka, Loaded or Reloaded in the list of Hardest PS1 games.
Two that didn't make the list were Metal Gear Solid and Medievil were tough for me. Contrary to that, I found the Crash Bandicoot series much easier in terms of gameplay
Metal Gear Solid VR Missions should be up there....
The first crash bandicoot was the only game I couldn’t beat as a kid. Still haven’t and I own the trilogy.
Resident evil was a beast!
No? It wasn’t hard at all.
@@batgirl4766 it was in 96 without a walkthrough.
@NateKat80 no way I was beating that game as a 6 year old
@@Sealae80 well to be fair my PlayStation was possessed. 😁
Tenchu...yoooo 🔥
I'm surprised Yu-Gi-Oh Forbidden Memories isn't on this list. Its one of the hardest PS1 games, AND one of the hardest Yu-Gi-Oh video games, of all time.
