Kenna also did a write up of the patterns we worked with with her thoughts and recommendations, if you'd like to learn more - it goes a bit more in depth with what we did and how the patterns behaved for us, etc. Obviously, with this video if we really dug in to everything - 1. we wouldn't have gotten as much done. 2 this video would have been 5 hours long.

Ok, so it's just physically impossible to sew a whole wardrobe in a week, but we did make a lot when you think about it - (i mean, 2 tailored suits?? I call this a win!) Overall, I'm really proud of what Kenna and I accomplished, and we are preparing to do this again (like...next week...) with evening looks and will be filming that process again!
Here are the patterns we used (I suggest reading Kenna's write up for more info on the patterns):

First things first. Shout out to Kenna for the willingness to dip off for a week and assist you. You both work amazing with one another. Secondly thank you for sharing and showing us the true difficulty of how hand made garments. In a ready to wear world we live in; this art is one that most don't even consider. The hounds tooth suit was stunning. The color of the hunter green and eggplant suite was visually chef's kiss. Absolutely loved the red shirt. Lastly #thanknyou for giving us a little dance break, lol. I am sure Kenna enjoyed it.

My maternal grandmother was born in 1916! The fashions from 1916 to 1919 are very interesting. I loved seeing my great-grandmother in these fashions (yes, they came from Paris and some were haute coutre). My great-grandmother was 6'1" which was incredibly tall at the time. I look exactly like her. I wore a reproduction when I was 14, my grandmother gasped because I looked exactly like her mother (I'm 5'10").

The 1910s for me are forever connected to my grandmother, too, as she and her siblings were born between 1910 and 1926. They got all their clothes made by their father, my great-grandfather, who run his own tailoring business in Hamburg, Germany, since the 1890s. Unfortunately none of his patterns, notes or anything from his workroom has survived the world wars. Hence, I am super excited to watch your period wardrobe, Abby. Thank you so much, I love the channel by the way.

Sort of off topic from this particular video, but I just want to say that Abby and I share a lot of facial features that I’ve been insecure about for most of my life, and when I see her rocking her fits with/without makeup on, looking downright beautiful, it gives me confidence to feel good in my own body too!
Also, I love that she focused on the 1910s for this video because I feel like it’s a period that’s vastly overlooked by mainstream fashion history channels. This was another great video! Can’t wait for the next one. 😊

I’ve always wondered about this. You know, in novels, a full wardrobe is miraculously sewn for the female lead in two days and the novel rocks on. My grandmother and aunt were seamstresses and it took them more than two days to create outfits, but then again they also were running households. Thanks for answering a question I didn’t know I had!

DOGGO BLEP! The lines on the back of the green suit are just OOOOOOO WOW! Jaw dropping. I don't think the early 1900s get enough love. We just brush past them because the drawings and fashion plates are so dull and awkward and unremarkable. But the reality of these clothes are BEAUTIFUL 😍❤️😍

I have picture of Great grand Aunt 1915, she was 18 and her dress is so simple, it woven square pattern , it looks more like 1920 and she has clogs on, holding a knitted sweater and why well she living rural North os Sweden and frilly stuff didnt work with walking through snow or running after goats. I also have picture of Dads grand aunt also 1915, she is from the south and she has suit, boots , a cute hat and holding a pike and looking smug. It so fun to see the difference between the north and south. They are both working class.

Chalk the string thoroughly, then turn around making sure to rub the skirt against the string as you turn. You should end up with the hem marked around the skirt.

I was given my great grandmother/great aunt's 1916 Singer 66 redeye treadle machine a couple weeks ago and she's up and running now. The first thing I sewed was a sewing apron inspired by a couple from Ladies' Home Journal from 1916-1917, and I have plans for more 1916 ensembles. I really want to do one of the all-in-one equestrian gaiter/breeches/vest delightful bizarre-nesses by Ertè in the December 1916 issue of Harper's Bazaar, but I need to get more comfortable with the machine first. I am finding the coordination of the treadle to be more challenging than my 1910 hand crank.

I love the skirt hem gauge. My husband can help me him skirts. If you want a long skirt hem it standing on a step stool. Great tool.

I love the 19-teens! Currently about to embark on a suit and a tailored dress. Your suits are great - love the houndstooth with the black velveteen, and all the decorative touches. Wish I was going on the cruise with you all.

The mention of the humidity reminded me of something a Civil War reenactor said: Horses sweat, men perspire, women glow. But sometimes women glow like horses. 👍

Oh my gosh Abby! So happy to see you more in Bloomington. If you want any restaurant recommendations I have a few. Also I highly recommend The Backdoor as a fun bar to go to. Little less chaotic than the straight bars in Bloomington lol

The hounds tooth outfit and the green outfit are my 2 favorites you've put together. I've been sitting on a stash of about 5 yards of hounds tooth material that I got from an estate sale a few yrs back and had no idea what to do with it. Your outfit gave me a good idea the next time I make an Edwardian outfit. ❤

I've got a photo of my granny and her parents from about 1917 and her mother is wearing a very similar suit to the one on the left. I know I shouldn't be surprised but it's always nice to see. Also it's nice to see that even the upper middle class weren't above getting good wear out of last year's fashion

I think you can still buy those hem marking contraptions. There was one in the Home Ec room in my 1969 sewing class. I thought it worked very well. I didn't really need one. I just drove 5 minutes to mom's--she was handy with a yardstick. She also knew what she was doing. If a novice was helping you mark a straight hem I think this thing would be a great help. My son eventually got pretty good at it. My dad had even marked a hem or two in his day for mom. Mom made almost everything she wore. So did I.
