  • Anxiety recovery can be a highly individual journey. This is especially true if you have ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, or otherwise identify as neurodivergent. While there are certainly general principles we rely on, every person will find recovery to present specific and unique challenges that have to be addressed as part of the process. For neurodivergent members of our community, this is also true.
The good news is that an ADHD, ASD, or other diagnosis does not mean that recovery will not work for you, or that you will never be able to overcome your anxiety issues. Dr. Terri Bacow was kind enough to spend time with me to address some of the more common questions I hear from our neurodivergent friends when it comes to anxiety and recovery. Terri specializes in treating anxiety disorders and is also highly trained and experienced in working with neurodivergent clients. Her understanding and insight in this area is so valuable!
Do you have to "recover different" because you have ADHD or are on the autism spectrum? Everyone has to recover in their own way so the answer is yes, but your neurodivergence does not mean that you can't get better or can't take a cognitive-behavioral approach to recovery.
Can neurodivergent people overcoming chronic and disordered anxiety? They can. Especially with the help of an experienced and well trained clinician, our ever growing understanding of neurodivergent issues and challenges means we're developing excellent ways to adapt the recovery process to meet those issues and challenges.

Oh man, I was really looking forward to listening to this but I can't make out what she is saying. The sound is a real issue for me. I tried putting subtitles up but they are misrepresenting what is being said. drew, if you have time could you possibly put subtitles for this video if other people are struggling to hear what she is saying.

The Facebook group is pretty inactive now. Only I and the admin team can post and that's rare so you're not missing anything. We had to change the group because with almost 10,000 members it was almost impossible to keep it from being a "Drew gets asked the same questions every day" group.

In some Jung's analytical psychology offshoots...there is often correlation in distribution of ADHD with certain specific personality types. It leaves me wondering...if treating ADHD is actually an attempt to change someone's Personality. Is that just stigmatization/labeling of cognitive minority. Should we "help" them change, or our world should be more accommodating and respectful, to people with other talents.

Treatment is based on the individual seeking treatment. If ADHD presents enough of a functional challenge, then an individual may ask for help in learning helpful ways to adapt and improve function. If not, they may not ask for help which is completely OK. They get to make that choice and we all get to respect that. Even in treatment, an individual gets to reject or refuse any part of treatment at any time if they feel it too intrusive or not in alignment with who they are or what they value. I think the issue here is the acceptance part. I agree that there should be no universal demand to "fix" our neurodivergent friends or change them automatically. That's not in any way cool.

Oh drew. I get worse all the time. The thoughts I have and even the remotest chance of them being true...
    My thoughts are thoroughly unacceptable.
    Anyone..
    Family...
Help me!! Bring back the old me... turning this only heaven into hell.

Sometimes we have thoughts that are disturbing, frightening, and uncomfortable. All minds produce those thoughts. Anxious brains get stuck on them and start treating them like emergencies, and that's the actual problem. I get that if feels like you must do something about those thoughts but fighting them ultimately drives one into the state you're in. It's important to hear that because its a key concept in recovery.
