Jesus, you can just see what a dangerous balancing act the court painters had to engage in. "How honest should I be about the inbreeding without getting murdered?"
I mean, presumably quite honest. Pretty much anyone contemporaneously viewing the painting would also know of the monarch’s true appearance so if the painting was too flattering, your patron would be ridiculed for their self-aggrandizement
Well, she ruled a vast empire (Hapsburg empire) but not the Holy Roman Empire, which her husband "ruled"...there was not much to rule as this empire was very federalistic..
Joseph II is such a frustrating story to learn about because he could’ve been a great leader if he slowed down with the changes and had a much gentler approach with his radical changes. Some of his changes are very modern and they sound like good ideas but he needed to be more careful with all the changes. Such a shame
His brother, Leopold II, was basically what Joseph could have been. But Leopold was also denied an illustrious reign not due to any lack of talent but because he died after only 2 years on the imperial throne
Maria Theresa: Maria! Go get your books! Maria Carolina: Ok! Maria Theresa: Not you! Your other sister! Maria Amalia: Me mother? Maria Theresa: No! The other Maria! Maria Anne: Well is it me? Maria Theresa: No the Maria who is a nun! Maria Elisabeth: Ah I see, its me! Marie Antoinette: Which Maria finished my cake? All Marias: Not me!
They were known by their second names and Maria Theresa would never call any of them Maria except Maria Christina because she was known as Marie or Mimi.
Some of the descendants of Maria Theresa (the last Habsburg) were good looking, but even Maria Theresa and her husband were related genetically. The Habsburg-Lorrain dynasty looked like their ancestors because they kept marrying genetically related people, it's amazing to know that some monarchs have blood of the old dynasty's, the most famous one is the king of Spain. Queen Elizabeth has blue blood too but the dynasty's of England changed name often, and king Felipe is directly related to the old monarchy
I think all the current monarchs of Europe can trace their ancestry back to two rulers in the late medieval period of Europe, I’m not sure where I got that from tho so my brain could just be saying things
Hmmm. So inbreeding and the problems thereof still plague Spain. Not surprised. But the Spanish Bourbons are considered of French stock, just as the English house of Windsor is still considered German. (Well now more blue blood English thanks to the late and beloved Princess Diana).
Maria Theresa: So Maria Amalia will marry the Duke of Parma and Maria Carolina 3 will marry the King of Naples and Maria Antonia will marry the Dauphin and Maria Christina will marry the Duke of Teschen. Maria Elizabeth 1, Maria Carolina 1 and Maria Carolina 2 all died in infancy and Maria Johanna and Maria Josephs both died of smallpox. Maria Anna and Maria Elizabeth 2 are too unattractive for husbands so they shall become the Abbesses of some convents. Joseph will marry the Princess of Parma. Charles died of smallpox . Leopoldo will marry a Spanish Princess. Ferdinand will marry the Duchess of Massa. Done. Adviser: What about Maximilian? Maria Theresa: Meh, he can he an archbishop. I don’t care.
You are underestimating the importance of the church those days. It is called the Holy Rome Empire for a reason. Rome has it's own power above all the kings and princes and having a high position in the church gives power to the whole family. There were also some abts that were ruled as little kingdoms. Some by wealthy women of nobility and that were no nuns!
I was literally going to ask if he was living at the time, but decided the question would make me sound ignorant. So I googled it and came back to confide my ignorance and thank you for the fun fact 😊 I love Lindsay's videos and appreciate your post.
It amazes me how Europe went from thousands of years of war over religion and land, to communism, then to some of the most progressive countries in the world and some not so progressive. History is amazing.
Perhaps you should have phrased it to "Leopold married _Charles's_ sister," instead of "Leopold married his sister", because that line made me pause the video in confusion for a moment.
I would love to learn more about Italy's many families and their respective seats! The Medicis, the Sforzas, the d'Estes... there's so much going on before Italian unification
Idea for future video maybe: I’m from Poland (live in Sweden) and would love to see a video on all the times Poland was occupied. Being the center of Europe meant a lot of invasions.
It's like this joke about time travellers. One time traveller asks someone in the street about what's going on in the world now with purpose of identifying the year they are in and gets an answer that Poland is occupied. And then tells to his friend: ''Oh no, we could be at any time point.'' (I've heard the version with Russia and Turkey being at war).
An interesting touch at the end might have been a short note that the son of the last Hapsburg epmeror, Otto von Hapsburg, was a big proponent of European unity and served in many international diplomatic posts. From Crown Prince and Archduke of Austria, to Mr. European Union (sort of )
Also he would have had the longest reign ever if he had been emperor. I believe it would have been 80+ years long, as he only died a few years ago and lived almost to 100 years old, and he was young when his father died.
