Joe Duplantier is a good dude. He owns a recording studio around the block from where we jam in Queens called Silvercord Studio where Gojira recorded a bunch of albums. The guy we rent our room from is a recording engineer at Silvercord Studios and wanted us to meet Joe. We hung out at his studio and met his son. He immediately recognized my guitarist Steve because he used to play drums in Agnostic Front so he was calling him "OG NYHC" Joe asked if we're playing New York style Hardcore and we told him it's a mix of thrash, hardcore and metal so he wanted to hear what we sounded like so he went to our studio with us and it was nerve wracking having a guy who's played festivals in Poland in front of 700 thousand people watching us, a little nobody band with at that time 10 shows under our belt, but it was also not that nerve wracking as well because he was just so cool and down to earth. He loved the music, gave us a bunch of advice loved the name of our band "Fire is Murder" so we gave him a bunch of merchandise, shirts, stickers ect. And he told us he'll be keeping an eye on us as we grow and will lend a hand the more we make a name for ourselves. Last month he tagged us in a picture in the Gojira Instagram stories and Silvercord Studio stories where our boy Lou Koller of Sick of it All was wearing one if our shirts on stage at some festival in France Joe was at. It's awesome to have someone who is in a band that's huge even giving us the time of day when most wouldn't even be bothered. Awesome reaction as always and it's not if , but when we make it over to England to play shows we got to meet up! I'll get you guys on the guest list, throw you some merch and we'll share some pints and make fun of each other's accents haha
That opening riff just slaps a big ol smirk on your face, which turns to a full smile, and by the time Joe's vocal come in... your face is already melted 🫠
Hello from New England...I just saw Gojira 2 weeks ago in Portland Maine...It was my 7th time seeing them and they killed each time...They do use different soundscapes under certain songs to give it a vibe.. That's the "droning" you mentioned you heard.. I'm a drummer of 40 yrs and it takes me literally 2 months to chart out the drumming and then sitring down and playing it 🧐🤘✌️
I just discovered Gojira n I’m absolutely blown away. How does that drummer do that?… I’m at a loss for words lol. How is he doing 2 different timing signatures simultaneously with his hands n feet? At that insane speed?! How is that possible?? I’ve been listening to metal for a long time n I’ve never seen or heard a better drummer. I honestly didn’t even think what he’s doing is possible… Just unbelievable..
The thing that gets me about Gojira is that every time I see them perform, the bass player (I can't remember his name) ALWAYS looks like the happiest person on Earth. EDIT: With regards to Mario sounding out of time, what he does early on in the song is set up the expectation that the snare plays on the 3rd beat in that riff, then later on he starts to alternate it between beats 3 and 4. Its not actually a polyrhythm he's just shifting the pulse.
Just an FYI. Dime & Vinny owned a strip club in Dallas, TX at the height of Pantera called The Clubhouse. And some of the dancers used to dance to Pantera tunes
This song got me into Gojira. I'm French btw ^^ Also...Dave and Ash, you're awesome together ^^ So much love and affection, I could watch you all day reacting to stuff !
Ash is right. Mario changes up the rhythm. f.i. normally the snare is on the '2' an '4' within Ash'es 4 but Mario suddenly then changes it to the '1' and '3'. That's what you hear. If Ash likes groove metal (with a lot of repetition but with changeups) it might be time to introduce Meshuggah. Just don't do 'Bleed'. Try 'Dancers to a Discordant System'
Dude I am the same way, I used to listen to them a lot, always liked them. I saw them live last weekend on the Mega Monster tour and I was mind blown. They stole the show for me. Sonically, visually, the energy as well, everything was 🤌
Thank you so much for The Gift of this prequel reaction to Gojira. For the second time in august 18 (but this time it will be in the pit), i will have the chance to go see them with Mastodon & Lorna Shore. I just can't wait !!! I could be wrong about that, but i think that the whoom sound that you point out, come from a flanger effect on the Bass. You are such a nice couple, great reactions together.

Flying Whales hits on another level IMO

What a massive honor! Good on ya.
For whatever reason around 10:00 when it descends it gets me everytime. Great song.
Very melancholic ending
Mario Duplantier murders drum kits.
Mby Nils Dominator? 😂❤
I can’t remember which one of his solos it was, but the rim of his snare was BENT!! He’s a beast!!🤘🏻🤘🏻
One of my favorite bands, such a great live experience.

I got to see Gojira live back in May for the first time. Absolutely incredible live show. Oh and Getcha Pull On (RIP DImebag).
