Hi Luke, mentioned this already but redo a test with FCP but this time export in H.264. I noticed on my test M1 Pro (10 cores & 16 core) and M1 Max (32 core) that the Max does the export in half the time to the Pro due to the 2x video decoders on the Max chip! I also learnt like your pro-res test (what I guess your FCP test is here in this video) when I did this test for the pro and max export, the times are almost identical in doing this export like your test - about 5 seconds difference on the export. For a lot of creators, we export at h.264 settings so actually the M1 max is better for video creators using an h.264 export but you may as well buy a M1 Max with 24 GPU cores as you talk about as the 32 GPU cores won’t make any difference really for this scenario. Give it a try yourself 😄
I hear the h.264/265 HW encoders aren't so great for quality and file size (although speed is awesome) so it might make sense to export to ProRes and then use something like Handbrake for h.264?
One big question going around at the moment after the disastrous Verge battery results is how much the battery is affected by the max, so a great comparison to answer all those worries would be comparing the 14" Pro and 14" Max, and 16" Pro to 16" Max in battery life. I'm also interested in the fan noise/rpm differences between the 14" max and 16" max when running games.
That's exactly what I wanna know. I'm sure there's a big gap in the rpm, like 2 - 3 thousand but the laptop performs equal to the 16 inch. It's only the battery that I'm sceptical about now
@@sooryasrajan619 Max Tech has a video called 106c CPU Torture test showing the 14" at 4k rpm whilst the 16" has fans off, eventually it puts fans on at 1500rpm, but that's with cinebench which is really pushing it. I'm wondering more about actual real world use, if neither needs fans high under real world use then its no worry to me.
@Tronam For me its because I'm coming from a 2017 15" Intel which spins fans up for just about everything. My day to day work is coding, so if it only spun fans up while running large test suits or building docker images that would be ideal. On the gaming front, I did have the M1 Max 24 GPU on order just because for the little upgrade cost it might have been nice to play some casual games now and then (maybe some WoW, Factorio, AoE 2 DE, probably Total War Warhammer 2 at the max end), especially if it didn't seem like it was taxing the system too much, I've cancelled that order and just gone with the 10 core Pro with 32GB now though, to me the Max doesn't seem worth the battery/thermal tradeoffs given what I wanted it for. I think the M1 Pro will still run Factorio so that's ok.

Really glad someone finally looked at the 24 core as I was strongly considering this GPU version as a trade off between fast video rendering versus battery life.
I have the M1 Max 10/24 on order, after vacillating between other configurations of the MBP 14". Your findings and others seem to be validating my choice. As you say, the Max 10/24 is a sweet spot for those of us who are seeking just a bit more graphics performance than the Pro models deliver, but not wanting to increase the cost any more than necessary.
What i really wonna see is 16" M1 PRO vs M1 max 24 GPU - battery life and all test comparison. Because M1 MAX 32 GPU already doesn't do that difference in power but in battery life less efficient.
Oh yes, I would be very interested in the mega-comparison between all 14"s. Please include a real-world use battery showdown (web browsing, video watching, some light pro work). I realize this takes a long time to test, but I think it's really valuable information. Keep up the great work Luke!
Glad you chose to do this test. I was thinking of ordering this variant of the M1 Pro with 10 core CPU and 24 core GPU. I think the 24 core GPU is the Sweet Spot of the two choices and most likely the variant that I'll buy.
I've just learned that the M1 MacBooks are "always on" - always looking for WiFi so they can update things like shared files. You can't turn that off, at least with the current OS. The problem isn't power consumption - it's insignificant - but the fact that thieves with scanners can find the machine when you think it's safely hidden (e.g. in your car or luggage.) Keep an eye out for rf-shielded sleeves and bags, which should become a thing pretty soon.
Just got my M1 Max 14 inch 24 core, 32 gb ram, 1 TB. I am software developer and I am blown. I don't think I am going to be able to max out the processor or have the fans come on.
@@HeyEfe Yup, it's been awesome. I run multiple code editors, do all sorts of app and mobile development, don't bother closing tabs or apps. Never max it out. Never heard the fans once. And I have been using the 20000 Mah power bank and it lasts for 6-7 hours, so I while I am doing all this crazy stuff I don't even need to be plugged in or at my desk.
Would you please do a battery test? I'm considering getting the 24 one if battery lasts longer and overheats less than the 32. Basically, getting most of the benefits of the Max you mentioned with less of the downsides
Hi Luke, I really like your presentation style! Would it be possible to test normal usage battery life of Pro vs Max? The Verge reported 16 hours for Pro, but only 10 for Max. This would be a deal breaker for me so I'd love to see it tested in a more standardised way.
theverge was the only outlet that reported that major difference in battery life. The max chip also has double the memory controllers so it could be that the idle power drain is slightly higher too. Toms guide has a review of the 16 inch macbook pro with m1 max and put the battery life as one hour short
@@kayseeday Yes, Apple's pricing means that by the time you've specced 32MB of RAM you're thinking "It's only 200 more for the M1 Max - might as well!". But if spending that 200 then means your battery life is hammered it's a completely different equation.

@@anonymity6504 it was the 14 inch with m1 pro vs a 16 inch m1 max. The screen is also larger so you have to keep that in mind and your battery life will vary on the specific workload. I'm dying to see a 16 inch m1 max vs 16 inch m1 pro battery life test. I'm mostly interested in a 16 inch m1 max 32 gb of ram vs 16 inch m1 pro 32 gb of ram as the ram will be equivalent and it'll be the idle power consumption of the chips to be tested.
I'm curious how much more battery life (if any) you get with the 24 core gpu vs the 32 core gpu. For me that is a defining factor since i would rather get the 14 and not have to lug a brick around.

Good to see a 24 core review. Could you do a comparison with the 32 core Max though, as there is nothing out there doing this and 24 core might be the sweet spot. Battery life and real world usage would be great, as benchmarks aren’t great as lots of software not optimised in the same way.
I had the 24 GPU on order but upgraded when I was able to get the full 32 core at a store last week. Now im very glad I just went all in. No regrets nice laptop. Alder Lake for gaming this macbook for my work.
I’ll definitely watch your ultimate comparison, especially the 14" 24-core GPU M1 Max, I’d be interested to see its battery comparison to a M1 Pro in 14”, to see its difference if there’s energy impact on a more powerful chip on that small size.
+1 for the “mega comparison”. Also now that gaming on MacBook Pro is an option, I’d be interested to see what the options are and how well it runs. I once tried Left 4 Dead 2 in parallels on a 2018 MBP with a Radeon 560X and it wasn’t really playable (I didn’t try a lot though as I had an actual gaming pc).
Gaming through Parallels is not great in the slightest. The best route to gaming performance on Intel is to actually have a bootcamp partition or to run the game through a slimmer translation layer like Wine or Crossover. On my 2016 in bootcamp, I played through most of MGSV at medium-high settings at 50-60fps. I dont remember what resolution, but I remember being impressed for a Mac!
this is what I went with only the 16" T1 because I'm using it in my music studio.......the 32 ram will keep me safe and I won't hear the fan while recording..... I think it's the best bang for the buck.... Just my opinion
Thank you for reviewing the 24 core! As you said, I ordered 32GB RAM anyway, so I chose the 24core MAX bc it’s just 200$ more and gives the upgraded cooling system and RAM bandwidth. I don’t need 4 monitors or the video en/decoders but I thought I choose the max just for fun.

In the same boat as you. Might do some gaming, and I don't want to get a machine that's already bottlenecked in those games by the time I get it. Granted... coming from a 2013 MBP I probably have nothing to worry about 😅
I still want to see a Final Cut Pro render *without* using any Pro Res footage. Force it to use the CPU and GPU without taking advantage of the built-in Pro Res encode/decode hardware -- I'm thinking that you'd finally see a major difference between the Pro and the Max when rendering video.

I'm just thinking the same thing. I think for software dev-related works a 10-core M1 Pro is probably enough and we can save the money for RAM upgrade. .
Thanks for doing this. I'd like to see a comprehensive battery life test between the 14" m1 pro, the 16" m1 pro, and the 16" m1 max. I think I'm in a small audience where I don't forsee a need for the m1 max's GPU as my work is largely CPU intensive (programming, some photo editing). The Verge said they got 16 hours battery life with the 16" m1 pro and 10 hours with the 14 and 16" m1 max. My concern is more with normal usage. I'm going for the 16" m1 pro as I prefer screen size and battery life. It's not as portable but hen I tested it in store the weight wasn't an issue for me and it's surprisingly not as huge as I thought it was going to be.

Great review, but if you choose the extra 200 $ för 24c, than you ALSO have to pay for the extra 16 GB memory. I don't know what that costs in the US, but it's a lot more than just 200 $.

Hi :) General question about M1pro/max MBPs: Will the speed of the embedded SSD vary depending on the capacity (like this is the case for 3rd party SSDs in general, mostly due to different amounts of SLC cache)? I mean will the 512GB be slower than the 2TB (or the 8TB) for instance? Does it have the same amount of cache as the larger models or does it have less? I expect that the 512GB will have less cache and be slower but maybe they pulled out a magic trick or something. Please let me know. Tx
It used to be so simple to decide which model of MacBook pro to pick. I'm a medium user and I'm actually quite dissuaded from choosing ANY M1 to replace my Intel MBP units just because of the stupid confusing levels Tim Cook is presenting, not that it can't be figured out with the configurator. What I'm really pissed about is logically, I cannot imagine Tim Cook and Apple actually planning these different combinations ahead of time. It would make more sense to me that the ORIGINAL plan was probably for TSMC to create a BASE model 12core/16gpu/16neural Chip, and a PRO model 12c/32g/32n Chip. Now my guess what happened in the CHIP MANUFACTURING PROCESS process is that the purity was a problem, ending with failures in different individual cores in the chips. Now instead of BINNING all the failures, Tim And Apple took all the BINNED ones and created DIFFERENT and thus even numbered cores by killing the odd core numbers, allowing almost all the BINNED CORES to be used, with much less tossed away! Today we are shown this long selection by the layered prices! That's my thought, and I'm really annoyed this pricing plan has spread to most of the new M1 range, may be the future M2 too? I'm happy only that my Intel ones are still working! Like I said elsewhere, Steve Jobs must be rolling in his grave seeing these confusing prices, rather than those simple ones during his time! How does that bulb- smack you all?
I think the benchmark tests show the potential performance benefits of more GPU cores. It’s a shame that only games can benefit from them at the moment. Hopefully, the developers of the applications will find ways of utilising these extra cores and give you a reason to go for the 24 or 32 GPU core M1 Max cpu (apart from the H264 export benefits).

Although I was thinking that the Max etc would effectively complete tasks faster and hence save battery, your CPU tests say differently Have a 32core on order and wondering whether to swap for the 24 core!
Suspicions confirmed, but with out the test it was just a guess. I love hands on data. Yes, I'd like to see the mega test. Basemodel, Full M1 Pro model. Binned Max model. Full Max model. Test data across lots of reviewers indicates the M1Pro is plenty for anyone not doing heavy graphics or lots of video editing. I think you concluded the same. There is testing that shows the 64GB MAX option is of significant value to App developers who make extensive use of virtual machines for testing while compiling and coding.
Great work! I know it's gonna be timeconsuming, but what about battery test? Would be good to know how different is the battery consumption (Pro vs Max 24GPU vs Max 32GPU) in case of light usage (web surfing, watching movies,..) and also under heavy load (video editing/exporting). Second very important topic is fan noise, how quickly fans starting to kick in and how loud these will get? I'm personally intrested only about in Macbook Pro 14 context, but having also 16 inch models in play, would be nice.
Wonderful demonstration Luke. As an old Mac enthusiast I remember a different Rosetta use to make Intel Macs compatible with older OS X software. However, when the OS Lion came out, Apple dropped Rosetta, making most of my software library obsolete, after only using Rosetta for about 3 to 4 years. So a word of caution, don’t invest or depend on software that might be on the digital chopping block.
Luke when you do these comparisons can you include a not cut down M1 Mac book (or what ever replaces it as apple upgrade) for comparison to the “base chip” please? Some time I think it’s easy to forget how powerful the “basic” M SOC. thanks
For a future benchmark: could you look into using a Macbook with M1 Pro/Max for Streaming using OBS? I once tried to use my 13“ MacBook Pro from 2019 and it was just not possible due to fan noise (I had 2 webcams and a web overlay running, no games or other applications in the background)

@Lukemiani I feel like your export comparisons might show different results if you would export actual projects and not just a video clip with a LUT on it. More titles, transitions and effects would stress out the CPU/GPU and not just use the encoders. Thoughts?

Don't forget to include the M1 13" (macbook Pro or Air) in your mega comparison! That would help with perspective and help people define need vs want. The 13" M1 at 16 GB is still viable.
I love your videos and really wish you would benchmark Adobe After Effects, Premiere, Photoshop, etc.. I work in the entertainment industry across multiple orgs and macs running Creative Cloud are everywhere, but literally no one is using FCP. This is not a knock on FCP, just the reality of the industry. Adobe apparently dominates because of the critical plugins that are vital to production work. This upgrade cycle is a big deal for these orgs, so it would be nice to see how these macs run the Adobe suite, thanks!

The battery should last longer but it’ll probably overheat more if you played highly intensive game. Otherwise you’re good to go.

@@LEDsellers Thank you. Just checked Tom's Guide. They have the 16 inch MB Pro M1 Max at 1 hour longer than the 14 inch MB Pro M1 Pro. I'm not sure how to interpret that given the 100 vs 70 battery size disparity.
@@anonymity6504 it was the 14 inch with m1 pro vs a 16 inch m1 max. The screen is also larger so you have to keep that in mind and your battery life will vary on the specific workload. I'm dying to see a 16 inch m1 max vs 16 inch m1 pro battery life test. I'm mostly interested in a 16 inch m1 max 32 gb of ram vs 16 inch m1 pro 32 gb of ram as the ram will be equivalent and it'll be the idle power consumption of the chips to be tested.
I'm curious how much more battery life (if any) you get with the 24 core gpu vs the 32 core gpu. For me that is a defining factor since i would rather get the 14 and not have to lug a brick around.
6:21 And here Luke learned that “deprecated API” does not necessarily mean “performs horribly”! OpenGL is a standard and I’m still not happy at Apple for discontinuing their official support for it. Hopefully Apple never outright removes OGL support and just frowns on App Store devs for using it

Good to see a 24 core review. Could you do a comparison with the 32 core Max though, as there is nothing out there doing this and 24 core might be the sweet spot. Battery life and real world usage would be great, as benchmarks aren’t great as lots of software not optimised in the same way.

I had the 24 GPU on order but upgraded when I was able to get the full 32 core at a store last week. Now im very glad I just went all in. No regrets nice laptop. Alder Lake for gaming this macbook for my work.
Alder lake might be worse for gaming depending on what you play.

Also now that gaming on MacBook Pro is an option, I’d be interested to see what the options are and how well it runs. I once tried Left 4 Dead 2 in parallels on a 2018 MBP with a Radeon 560X and it wasn’t really playable (I didn’t try a lot though as I had an actual gaming pc).
Gaming through Parallels is not great in the slightest. The best route to gaming performance on Intel is to actually have a bootcamp partition or to run the game through a slimmer translation layer like Wine or Crossover.
On my 2016 in bootcamp, I played through most of MGSV at medium-high settings at 50-60fps. I dont remember what resolution, but I remember being impressed for a Mac!
this is what I went with only the 16" T1 because I'm using it in my music studio.......the 32 ram will keep me safe and I won't hear the fan while recording..... I think it's the best bang for the buck.... Just my opinion

As you said, I ordered 32GB RAM anyway, so I chose the 24core MAX bc it’s just 200$ more and gives the upgraded cooling system and RAM bandwidth. I don’t need 4 monitors or the video en/decoders but I thought I choose the max just for fun.
@DNO if you buy 32GB RAM anyway (what I did, as mentioned) it’s 200$.
If you’re ok with 16GB, then it’s 600$ bc you need to pay for 32GB “extra”.

In the same boat as you. Might do some gaming, and I don't want to get a machine that's already bottlenecked in those games by the time I get it. Granted... coming from a 2013 MBP I probably have nothing to worry about 😅

I still want to see a Final Cut Pro render *without* using any Pro Res footage. Force it to use the CPU and GPU without taking advantage of the built-in Pro Res encode/decode hardware -- I'm thinking that you'd finally see a major difference between the Pro and the Max when rendering video.

You also didn’t mention the fact that M1 max has double the pro res media encoders and decoders. Huge benefit over the M1 Pro perhaps?

Thanks for doing this. I'd like to see a comprehensive battery life test between the 14" m1 pro, the 16" m1 pro, and the 16" m1 max. I think I'm in a small audience where I don't forsee a need for the m1 max's GPU as my work is largely CPU intensive (programming, some photo editing). The Verge said they got 16 hours battery life with the 16" m1 pro and 10 hours with the 14 and 16" m1 max. My concern is more with normal usage. I'm going for the 16" m1 pro as I prefer screen size and battery life. It's not as portable but hen I tested it in store the weight wasn't an issue for me and it's surprisingly not as huge as I thought it was going to be.

Great review, but if you choose the extra 200 $ för 24c, than you ALSO have to pay for the extra 16 GB memory. I don't know what that costs in the US, but it's a lot more than just 200 $.
I've just got a 16" 24 core M1 Max and the compute score on this model is 59,000, just FYI the 16" model appear to be slightly faster than the 14".

General question about M1pro/max MBPs: Will the speed of the embedded SSD vary depending on the capacity (like this is the case for 3rd party SSDs in general, mostly due to different amounts of SLC cache)?
I mean will the 512GB be slower than the 2TB (or the 8TB) for instance? Does it have the same amount of cache as the larger models or does it have less?
I expect that the 512GB will have less cache and be slower but maybe they pulled out a magic trick or something.

It used to be so simple to decide which model of MacBook pro to pick. I'm a medium user and I'm actually quite dissuaded from choosing ANY M1 to replace my Intel MBP units just because of the stupid confusing levels Tim Cook is presenting, not that it can't be figured out with the configurator. What I'm really pissed about is logically, I cannot imagine Tim Cook and Apple actually planning these different combinations ahead of time. It would make more sense to me that the ORIGINAL plan was probably for TSMC to create a BASE model 12core/16gpu/16neural Chip, and a PRO model 12c/32g/32n Chip. Now my guess what happened in the CHIP MANUFACTURING PROCESS process is that the purity was a problem, ending with failures in different individual cores in the chips. Now instead of BINNING all the failures, Tim And Apple took all the BINNED ones and created DIFFERENT and thus even numbered cores by killing the odd core numbers, allowing almost all the BINNED CORES to be used, with much less tossed away! Today we are shown this long selection by the layered prices! That's my thought, and I'm really annoyed this pricing plan has spread to most of the new M1 range, may be the future M2 too? I'm happy only that my Intel ones are still working! Like I said elsewhere, Steve Jobs must be rolling in his grave seeing these confusing prices, rather than those simple ones during his time! How does that bulb- smack you all?
Honestly the graphics are pretty good. Not much of a lag except for like you said with the little white glitches coming up on the screen

I think the benchmark tests show the potential performance benefits of more GPU cores. It’s a shame that only games can benefit from them at the moment. Hopefully, the developers of the applications will find ways of utilising these extra cores and give you a reason to go for the 24 or 32 GPU core M1 Max cpu (apart from the H264 export benefits).
Question: Photographer here, i usually use mainly ps and lr, might use premier and ae, blender and c4d, might enjoy playing hitman, crash, cod, if they are playable on the new macbooks, which build do u suggest personally?

Suspicions confirmed, but with out the test it was just a guess. I love hands on data. Yes, I'd like to see the mega test. Basemodel, Full M1 Pro model. Binned Max model. Full Max model. Test data across lots of reviewers indicates the M1Pro is plenty for anyone not doing heavy graphics or lots of video editing. I think you concluded the same. There is testing that shows the 64GB MAX option is of significant value to App developers who make extensive use of virtual machines for testing while compiling and coding.

I know it's gonna be timeconsuming, but what about battery test? Would be good to know how different is the battery consumption (Pro vs Max 24GPU vs Max 32GPU) in case of light usage (web surfing, watching movies,..) and also under heavy load (video editing/exporting).
Second very important topic is fan noise, how quickly fans starting to kick in and how loud these will get? I'm personally intrested only about in Macbook Pro 14 context, but having also 16 inch models in play, would be nice.

Wonderful demonstration Luke. As an old Mac enthusiast I remember a different Rosetta use to make Intel Macs compatible with older OS X software. However, when the OS Lion came out, Apple dropped Rosetta, making most of my software library obsolete, after only using Rosetta for about 3 to 4 years. So a word of caution, don’t invest or depend on software that might be on the digital chopping block.

For a future benchmark: could you look into using a Macbook with M1 Pro/Max for Streaming using OBS? I once tried to use my 13“ MacBook Pro from 2019 and it was just not possible due to fan noise (I had 2 webcams and a web overlay running, no games or other applications in the background)

No. 32Gb of ram is more than enough to easily run all the GPU cores without issue and adding another 32 wont make a difference

It's not a matter of gb at that point, but rather bandwidth. That said, 32gb and 64gb on the max have the same bandwidth, so no :)

@Lukemiani I feel like your export comparisons might show different results if you would export actual projects and not just a video clip with a LUT on it. More titles, transitions and effects would stress out the CPU/GPU and not just use the encoders. Thoughts?

Don't forget to include the M1 13" (macbook Pro or Air) in your mega comparison! That would help with perspective and help people define need vs want. The 13" M1 at 16 GB is still viable.

I love your videos and really wish you would benchmark Adobe After Effects, Premiere, Photoshop, etc.. I work in the entertainment industry across multiple orgs and macs running Creative Cloud are everywhere, but literally no one is using FCP. This is not a knock on FCP, just the reality of the industry. Adobe apparently dominates because of the critical plugins that are vital to production work. This upgrade cycle is a big deal for these orgs, so it would be nice to see how these macs run the Adobe suite, thanks!
