  • The UK takeaway industry is booming. The country now spends over £10 billion a year on takeaway food, with the online market being dominated by giants like JustEat and Deliveroo. But what is the real cost of convenience?
    Panorama investigates how planning laws are being subverted and food safety legislation flouted in the battle to sell whatever consumers want to eat, whenever and wherever they want to eat it. Reporter Tina Daheley lifts the lid on the secrets of the takeaway industry.

      I cook at home and rarely eat out or order a takeaway.
      I cook at home because it's healthier. I use higher quality ingredients and quality grass fed/grass finished meats, and wild caught fish.
      All my herbs are fresh. Pink Himalayan sea salt, not the regular table salt that destroys your health. Quality ingredients is a must.
      Takeaways use the cheapest ingredients possible to cut cost. Very unhealthy eating.

Just Eat apparently charge up to 20% to an establishment just for an order which means these small takeaways are slowly being run into the ground as their profit margins are so low anyway. If that 20% of a business then that’s between 1500-1750 a week say even 2000 a week turnover. He has 3 permanent staff, 3 drivers over a week. Overheads etc are currently leaving him with a taking of about 100 if he’s lucky as he still has to put in money to go buy goods daily. To be fair, if you had a nut allergy then you don't order from Indian restaurants, because just like Tia, Chinese, Japanese, Middle eastern... they use a LOT of nuts in their cooking.
    And food prepared in a kitchen where nuts are prepared will never be 100% safe, because there are extractors and fans blowing it into every single area. I find it more sad that her parents didn't explain why she shouldn't really eat in these restaurants let alone a take away, where it's on a lot faster pace and more risk of cross contamination. Worked much of my adult life in restaurants, this isn't an excuse.. just facts!!
    If you see dishes on the menu that have nuts, especially if more than one, then you best steer clear of that restaurant or take away if you have a nut allergy. Unless the restaurant has nut allergy free zone, some higher market restaurants will have a special prep/cooking area (a sealed room) especially for nut allergy's.
    And also you need to check whether they use peanut oil in their cooking, as Asian restaurants will also be likely using traditional seasoned woks.. and this will mean the oil is likely to be in the pan in small amounts...
    I am as saddened by this as anyone, BUT we have to stop being a nation that needs to be led by the hand and become a nation of using common sense and look out for ourselves. If you don't know someone why would you trust them with your life? STOP expecting total strangers to be the ones looking out for you, you're playing Russian roulette!!! !

      Interestingly, I am not British myself, but I find it really interesting to what extend this hand-holding goes. Even the 'look left' on the streets...
      But I don't think Just-eat should have any more of a responsibility than they advertise with, as they fulfil the role of agent, not the restaurant itself. (ofcourse providing wrong information is a different story). They can set their own standards for allowing restaurants on their site as long as it is transparent.
      It should be a restaurants obligation though to provide correct allergy information when asked for. When I was in London couple of weeks ago, every restaurant asked whether we had any allergies... so it highly depends on the place

      Chinese takeouts typically only use cashew and peanuts for a couple dishes. There is the risk of cross contamination though if they aren't strict on storage and handling. I remember we had people allergic to gluten and nuts come in to ours, we'd only serve them during quiet times when we could take the time to avoid cross contamination. They were fine with that as most others places wouldn't bother.
      It's quite risky though as my parents were not educated and did not realize how serious it could be until my brothers friend almost died from a nut allergy (not due to us) but just randomly walking down the road.

    • @LindaTCornwall
      @LindaTCornwall 5 років тому +4

      @@frituurvlieg the big problem with the whole nut issue being more dangerous in a kitchen than ANY other allergy product is that they create dust when crushed, chopped etc, it's also used as oil, and seasoned pans are highly likely to contain it in small quantities.. the list goes on and on. That's what makes them so dangerous. I used to work as a manager in a well known high end London restaurant in the eighties and nineties, our restaurant had a separate small kitchen for nut allergy customers where their food was cooked... Lower end restaurants esp take aways wont have this. In an ideal world we should be able to say no nuts and there aren't any traces... all it takes is for one person to not think and move a peanut oil bottle and have it on their thumb, and touch your plate of food and if you're highly sensitive, good night Vienna .... dust if they use raw nuts is another big issue...

    • @frituurvlieg
      @frituurvlieg 5 років тому

      intempify yes it would be good quality of service. But the service quality is something a provider should decide for themselves. It’s up to the public to decide whether they deem this service valuable.
      However, if they would place this on their site, suddenly they become responsible and need to do audits and what not. It’s more then you would think...
      The restaurants should always have the up to date info as they are the ones actually in the kitchen. I think errors are much less when info comes directly from the source

      It's not just the ingredients a restaurant needs to watch, it's the cross contamination issue concerning other cooking implements, splashes of a contaminant from one meal affecting another. It's almost impossible for any restaurant to completely guarantee safety in these matters. It's not fair to expect them to. If you have a serious, life threatening allergy never buy anything from the restaurant if they work with the allergy causing ingredient on the premises - even if for meals you aren't ordering. The business model of companies like Just Eat is ingenious and highly profitable for owners and investors. Fund managers love their "capital light" model: very few up front costs, just a great idea, website and software and low paid delivery riders. Above all, no responsibility when anything goes wrong because the restauranteurs take all the blame. It's the ultimate in "delegating down": get the front line to do the hard work, take care of health and safety, and take the prison sentence when it all goes wrong. Think before you enjoy the convenience; the Just Eat/Deliveroo model is parasitic on those who do the real work.

    I can't see why it is Just Eat's fault that a restaurant was negligent re allergies. That meal could have been ordered via Just Eat or directly by phone from the restaurant. Restaurants with a zero star rating shouldn't be operating and Councils have full powers to deal with that. Many staff in take aways/restaurants are poorly paid and probably not familiar with allergy regulations or even speak much English. Focussing on that might have made a worthwhile documentary. But hell it's the BBC and I'm sure that would be waycist

      Just Eat does have some responsibility since they give takeaways much more exposure to people than the takeaway could have themselves. So if they are introducing customers to these places, then yes, they should take some accountability.

    • @geekafreak

      Just eat pass on the allergy information and thus should have a more stringent process in ensuring that the information is read and adhered to. A simple two step process for allergy information could help this.
      They need to take off takeaways with poor hygiene ratings or at least display their rating. Getting ill can kill as we have seen.

    Am a chef and i can tell you its 100% impossible to keep food safe, i have personally witnessed when we've cooked meals for service and put out on our hot counters or prepared a whole variety of salads, a staff member has lapsed in concentration and has used the same serving spoon or tongs to serve a customer which potentially contaminates everything or a customer has used the same tongs to prepare their own takeaway salad container because they couldn't be bothered to use the different tongs provided for each salad and again this contaminates everything - in either situation if a customer has a reaction then liability is on us - am not surprised just eat and deliveroo distance themselves from any allergen control system a restaurant might have in place cause if they did and considering the vast amount of restaurants they have on their platform, the liability is unimaginable, the law needs to change to force these companies to have some accountability or force them to do some due diligence on their restaurant partners
