PLEASE document the motor build! I want to see everything but, I 'm extremely interested in see all the details of that engine. I am very exited to see the end product!
@PhilsWorks Howard factory in Sydney? Shut down inthe50s I think nocastings or moulds left on premises if memory serves. Don't know if the last employee is still alive. Would perhaps have a wealth of knowledge if he is.
Hi Phil Gary here, I have 3 Howard motorcycles that you can see running on this page. I built them in the 1980's. These motors were manufactured from 1932 to 1939 and are 1264cc or 77 cu in. There were only 5000 made so you are very lucky to own one. They were never designed to run much more than 1000rpm. If you try pushing too much more, the conrods will snap just above the bearing and punch a hole through the cases. I know so I redesigned and had stronger rods made. Hope all goes well with your build and if you need any information on them, just ask. PS, The oil pump inlet is the lower right, the lower left with the one way valve, goes to the crankshaft and rear of the right barrel. The top left comes from the crank case while top right returns to the oil tank. They are a very slow pump so it will take a while till oils spits out, yes spits out. These engines don't have oil pressure, they just need to flood the mains so tolerances in the mains is critical.
Hi Gary! Thank you for reaching out! hard to find information on these things. I have a few questions, could you please shoot me an email! (email in my Contact)
Love it. Did one myself about 40 years ago. Used cut down resized car parts, JJ Powell's engineering in Nth Vic did the mods. Brilliant old school tradesmen. su carb from a old Morris, I've got a spare Stock motor and gearbox put away. Pretty heavy engine hey but the coolest engine Australia ever made. So Rare, well done mate.
For sure! If you could track any of the employees down, you would probably be amazed by the stories they could tell. Documenting history like that is so important. Especially if you're getting the information directly from someone who was there!
I've got a 70s Santee frame and was toying with the idea of putting a water-cooled Howard in it. I'll be watching this build with a lot of interest. Good luck with it mate
@@garybutler394 nah nothing's worthy of chucking in the scrap in my shed. Plenty of people around like this bloke with the talent to turn anything into something usable.
Pumped for this build! It is awesome to see older engines repurposed. You got it dead right as an American I have never heard of Howard before but excited to learn more about it!
Hi Mark, Kiwi here. I built the first one in 1980, the second in 1985 and third in 1987. I still have all 3 and they are in mint condition. You can see the first and third on this page. They are running on the bench after full rebuilds.
Wow that’s cool Man love the history behind it that you shared… Checking it out here from New Zealand very cool… will definitely subscribe to your channel ✌️😎👍
There was a Kiwi back in the 80s? Tried to stop others from building bikes with these motors.i know there has been a couple built since. Go for it, more power to you😊❤❤
Yes I have a few bits and prices iv bought to move the maggy but I feel like it’s changing the engine and I would like to keep it as it comes from the machine
Good 1 Phil , it has been done , but yours will be an interesting one , I've watched a couple of your videos , you've got the goods , ps , I'm glad you only swore a few times 😊 much nicer , cast wise , some new stuff is terrible , it's good to see young blokes doing this stuff , will be watching, and year fk imperial 😝👍
Yes I actually have a buddy who had a Howard chopper many years ago. I have only ever seen photos. Never actually seen a bike or one of these engines running in person. Will be a good experience
Hey Phil, looking forward to following this build. I did see a chopper with a Howard motor at a bike meet in Sydney in the mid 90's... It was getting heaps of attention and it featured in Live To Ride around that time. I haven't seen it since or another like it. Love the channel bro 👍
The Kiwi dude that built the one that was in early Ozbike claims he has trademarked the use of Howard engines in motorcyles. The bike was featured twice. First with a Trump frame and then with a custom plunger frame.
Like everyone that knows what a Howard is, before I even watched the vid I was like "lots of torque, no revs, it won't work!"...but you probably can make it work lol
PLEASE document the motor build! I want to see everything but, I 'm extremely interested in see all the details of that engine. I am very exited to see the end product!
I will definitely be documenting the assembly of the engine mate! It is a seriously interesting piece of equipment!

Document everything mate can’t wait
I remember seeing a photo of one in a ''Live to Ride'' magazine ,it was in a bike [road going] ,at a Rally
I still have all 3 and running well.

Hi Gary, do you know what the valve timing is on these engines ?

Thanks mate! Looking forward to getting it up and running
Cool project. I can remember a early ozbike with a Howard chopper. Might of been the eighties. Looking forward to seeing this on the road.
Yea! As iv said before! Iv heard of these choppers around and see old photos but iv never seen one in person or ever heard one of these engine run
@@PhilsWorksThere were 2 at Bulli last year. One is built like a flat tanker.
Yep i saw the one in ozbike in the eighties, it was cool and owner said it went well .
I still have all 3 and are in mint condition.
@@PhilsWorks Hi look on this page, there are the first and third ones I build running after full restoration.

Think I will be struggling to find employees from the 1920’s! Haha
The cam setup is interesting
In Iowa,USA we call that a Rototiller
Over here we call them "cultivators" too. Have you ever seen or heard of a Howard over there? I believe they were only ever exported to the UK
@@PhilsWorks Nope you were correct never heard of a Howard before? Cool looking motor though gonna be fun watching you build it!
This is mad mate. Can’t wait to follow this along
Building engine soon!

Yes many water-cooled Howards around but I can't bring myself to put a radiator on a chopper hahah
@@PhilsWorks I was thinking of trying to hide the radiator under the seat lol
I repaired so many Santee frames in the 80's so will give you some advice "through it in the scape, they're shit.

Nice clip art Fill
Some of me best work
Interesting for sure, Love the way you wing stuff, always interesting to watch and learn, look forward to more.
Glad you enjoyed it! There’s no other way except throw ya self in the deep in and work it out haha
Good to see this underway, nice one Phil!
Long way to go but making a start none the less

A bloke named kiwi built the first Howard bike back in the eighties I’ve got the magazine with it in it

@@garybutler2731 great to here you are still about and still have them
ive seen the magazine you have i cannot believe how much stuff you hoard need to put yours in a frame and ride it @markharwood4240
Saw another guy in one of the Aussie stationary engine groups build one of these, his name is Ron Xuereb. Good luck with the build.
Yes it’s been done a handful of times! Mine will be 1 of a kind though
Can’t wait to see this build
Can't wait to see it together and ready to ride.
You and me both!
A kick ass vintage cropper build🤘
Thank you!
Checking in from Canada, coolest thing
i've seen in a long time coming from an industrial background. Pretty stoked on this
Really want to see the engine coming together too, anything about how you're determining clearances etc would be very interesting
I think you'll find in this old air-cooled agriculture equipment there are huge clearances and tolerance's haha
@@PhilsWorks That will be the challenge too making more power
Been there done that 30 years ago
Wow that’s cool Man love the history behind it that you shared…

I have one too great video can't wait to see more thanks
Thanks for watching!
I’ve got to motor’s and a brand new magneto still in the box
Want to sell them?
@@PhilsWorks no sorry mate i inherited them but I would be interested in you building a frame for me the same as yours to suit the howard
how long have you had the motors ?
@@markharwood4240 Many years now, been buying every motor I can find
probably lot of them went to tip's

Yeah someone else said this! Not sure how someone can stop others from building them! Good luck to him. I’m going ahead with this one!
@@PhilsWorks Good luck and if you need advice or parts suppliers, I know a bit.
Actually I only registered the design of the bike because you cant stop someone using any engine in a custom vehicle.
😎👍😎
You should make a long fork springer for it too..
I’m unsure of frame geometry or front ends. I have an Indian girder laying around. I was thinking of using that
Just thinking you could get a pair of bevel gears and turn the magneto 90 degrees so the gearbox fits
Yes I have a few bits and prices iv bought to move the maggy but I feel like it’s changing the engine and I would like to keep it as it comes from the machine
Really cool project,,document as much as possible phil cos knowing how it works is as interesting as fuck also
Will do mate thank you!
This is so f ing rad man. Stoked for this one!!!!!!
Been a couple of bikes built with Howard v twins 70s and 80s😅
Yes definitely not saying I’m the first! Relax
Jockey shift handle from one of the discarded brass parts!?
Oh shit that’s a good idea! I’ll see what I have left. I can always melt it down and repurpose into a handle
