Both Thorfinn and Canute are mighty men, both taking very different paths to build Paradise. Thorfinn trying to achieve it with non-violence, compassion and Tolerance. Canute trying to achieve it with might, smarts, leadership and necessary violence.
In real life canute pushed big for the conversion to Christianity and his legendary wave speech was an example that even kings must defer to the Christian lord. The unfortunate state of the middle east could entirely be attributed to the damage done by the crusades. IRL Canute was absoltuely not fighting against god, he was serving him as he best saw fit and it worked a bit too well.
@Trashthlete the war in the middle east was very much a modern crusade. bush literally said god told him to do it in order to garner support which the UK and many other nations assisted with militaristically.
@Trashthlete Your previous points were worthless, christanity has been in charge before and it was known as the dark ages. The crusades werent their only conflict, it was just one in a laundry list. Theyre a very violent people historically and even now. Youre just trying to distract from the original point that the man in this video is just continuing on that tradition. Why does everyone think that Canute has changed? Watch the 20th episode of the 1st season. He said bluntly: "If you have to become a demon to build heaven on earth, he will do it." Canute is trying to bring peace to the most hostile culture. This is impossible without violence.
I mean, he has changed, just that his goals have not. The Canute we see now has gained a lot more perspective and experience in these 4 years compared to the one from episode 20. I think back then, he knew what he'd have to do, but these past 4 years have definitely made him understand just how harsh of a job he's taken upon himself, which is why he's a lot more lifeless now and why his father's head keeps bothering him as a form of his own guilt and self-criticism. Though one thing I don't really get is why Mai thought he doesn't believe in God. This whole thing about him came about because he believes in god, just that he lost his faith in him.
I think it was just that people never thought Canute's methods would be so extreme to the point he had to poison his own brother (well, killing your own relatives to secure the throne was not unusual). 😅 but true, his intention to "rebel against God" was all already revealed in S1. It was always there. But he continues to learn.
I think it's the type of change. His fundamental beliefs and views did change back in season 1 but it's his personality and actions he's willing to take that have changed over the course of season 2. Remember when season 1 Canute was unhappy that Askeladd had a slave look-alike killed to make it look like Canute had been murdered? But the Canute of now has no qualms about killing people
I remember so many people in S1 wanting to see a Thors backstory to show us how a man could become like he did. Now we are literally watching it, but through his son. Both Askeladd and Thors would be so proud. In his death, Askeladd created not just one Artious figure in Canute, but surprisingly also Thorfinn. If only he could see them both now.
12:00 They are far from disgusted. In norse warrior culture Thorfinn would be the epithome of valor and honor through that display of inner and outer strength. That's why they watch in silence, as a sign of respect and admiration.
Absolutely love what Thorfinn said.. "I can't hit someone when i'm trying to negotiate for peace." What a great message for all of those in this world believing personal attack would ever win an argument or starting a war can ever bring peace. Thorfinn Karlsefni, son of Thor is a true rolemodel from humanity.
Einar and Thorfinn's brotherly bond warms my heart. Einar really is Thorfinn's long lost brother. I know they aren't related in anyway but that's what it feels like. Brotherhood. A bond deeper than friendship. They feel like family .
I think how the author shows the vikings with Thorfinn is amazing. At first they think he's a joke and something to play with because they believe he's just a slave acting up, but you can see once Thorfinn shows his resolve and he makes it till the end no one is laughing or cracking jokes anymore, they're all solemn with respect they hold for him now as a warrior. So it's not that they feel nothing because they definitely feel respect for him at the end. For vikings the only thing that mattered is strength and this episode is pretty much paramount to that with Canute's speech.
Yeah I noticed on my second watch just how gradually quiet it got until the crowd was completely silent in the end and how that showed the respect he had earned from them
Thorfinn Karlsefni is a nickname given to him by the vikings, not his full name, similar with Thors the Troll, Thorkell the Tall, Askeladd the Lucky, Iron fist Ketil, etc. He's basically a legend among vikings or already well known so that nickname comes up when they talk about strong warriors.
MAPPA really did a great job for sure. Everything looked so beautiful (especially Canute's eyes, lmao). The animation, music, and voice acting -- all 10/10! I really enjoy every minute of Canute's screen time. Such a complex character. Like you don't know what he's gonna do next! 😂👀
Poor Thorfinn got beaten up badly in the face , but I'm so proud of his courage and the man he is becoming. I get chills hearing Thorfinn say those words , " I have no enemies.". His eyes are like Thors now . Thorfinn is starting to reflect his father Thors and I couldn't be more happier. If only Thors and Askeladd were here to see Thorfinn now.
Best dialogue in anime history, Thorfinn and Canute talk is one to send shivers down a person's spine. The conversation was on a whole another level to those around them to understand. Amazing.
I dont think u understand Canute very well. He isnt a coward or a power hungry tyrant. He and Thorfinn actually share the same goal: To create a paradise rid of war and slavery. But their means are completely opposite. Thorfinn will reject violence while Canute will kill innocents, be it for the same goal. I think theyre both as respectable as eachother, even though they are both in eachothers way of said goal. I do disagree with Canutes means however. Thorfinns pacifistic ideology is by far much better then Canutes ruthlessness. But we live in different times as they did. And back then when killing and slavery was so common, I think Canute can be forgiven due to his overall motive of a better world
Towards the end and when I rewatched it on my own I came to realise that. They want the same things but it's their methods that are clashing which is what's so interesting about it. Even though like you said killing and slavery was common back then, I think the whole point of Vinland Saga is to move away from that which is why even though Canute's goal is paradise, his means are wrong through and through
Canute's motivations still remain the same as when he stared down Bjorn. I also don't think Askeladd would bother giving an opinion on how Canute is pushing things, considering he considered himself as "just a viking". I mean, I don't think Askeladd would sacrifice himself for someone he didn't have absolute faith in, considering he was someone who rose to power by tricking people. That is a big leap for someone like him to take.
@@kaze.14 I'd believe that if Askeladd didn't have his water under the bridge moment, or the fact he was more of a big picture sort of person. Still an interesting take tho.
Yeah his motivation is the same though his method has changed. I honestly never expected him to save the vikings and I don't think it's something he planned from the beginning or Askeladd knew about. And I do wonder if Askeladd would be against it or not all things considered. These are the times where I wish he was still alive and could tell us himself
I love how even though everything Canute is saying pisses off Einar, what Thorfinn is seeing infront of him is creating a growing admiration and respect for Canute calling him incredible for having this vision of saving the vikings that never crossed Thorfinn's mind. I'm having flashbacks of Fate/Zero when Rider, Gilgamesh, and Saber had that banquet discussing their different POV's of what a king should be
He is doing it.... Canute is making paradise .... He is saying that if he can't save the Vikings he can't save anyone, he wants to save humanity but thorfinn is an escapeist and he wants to run away with people like him...... Canute= save everybody starting with Vikings and thorfinn= escape the world to create a country for people like him
I mean, he's building his paradise on top of innocent people's corpses and he's just feeding the Vikings what they want rather than teach them what they need, him saying he's trying to save the Vikings sounds more like total BS seeing how he's doing nothing but endorse their violent behavior.
@@ajch22 my man i think i need you to rewatch episode 5 😂..... It's the exact opposite.... Even thorkell was mad at him for avoiding war ..... I understand this kinda story requires multiple viewing..... Well i read the manga so it's much more clear to me 😔
@@shaan4110 I do remember he is trying to avoid conflict as much as possible, but it is also true he is not really doing that good of a job. He is taking everything by force, he didn't even tried to find a common ground with Ketil, he just decided the best choice was to provoke a conflict and force him to surrender everything he's worked for. There's a very thin and blurry line Canute is constantly crossing back and forth. He takes one step forward and kills a hundred men, but then takes a step back and claims he gave them a choice to not fight, when he basically setted them up to either fight or forfeit. His intentions might be well placed, but his actions don't exactly align. Idk if there's something I'm missing from the manga, but that's just the picture I get from the situation, I could give it a second watch, but I don't know how much would that change my perception.
@@ajch22He wanted to conquer the farm and sacrifice Ketil to prevent conflicts that could start and bring even more victims. He chooses the ways of fewer victims. And by "save" the Vikings, he means that he will conquer them all, and then force them to change. He was already cruel to them from the beginning and did not allow them to violate orders. I don't want to spoil the further plot, but Knut never meant that he would bring more grief and sacrifice than the chaos that would be in his place
Canute is trying to bring peace to the most hostile culture. This is impossible without violence. We need restrictions, harsh laws... what Canute is already doing. To change the worldview of a huge culture = to build a paradise on this territory. It's a difficult task, but for some reason people don't understand Canute. They call him a murderer and a tyrant, forgetting about his actions to prevent further violence. Even in the situation with the requisition of the farm, he chose the lesser of evils. And what are the other options? Raise taxes for the entire population (risk of rebellion) or disband the army in England (great risk of rebellion and war). Canute is an incredible man
Yeah, he's basically dedicated his life to damage control of the human race. Which is a hell in it's own right I guess and operates solely on the notion that you can't trust anyone. I mean, achieving peace through the nation state *has* worked out. It may not last forever, but nothing really lasts forever.
I do agree that Canute is incredible and his ideals and motivations are commendable, I just don't agree with his methods even if it is as you said choosing the lesser of evils. Thorfinn is trying to obtain the same goal but without violence and I choose to follow him
@@OtakuMai But, unfortunately, Thorfinn's path is a fantasy. Canute does not run away from the problem, he fights it. Pacifism is simple when only you depend on it, and not when the whole kingdom is under your command.
I think Canute is "saving" the Vikings by trying to control them so they won't be attacking villages whenever they want to. Well, that's what I'm thinking but I can be wrong.
That's exactly why he was called Canute The Great. He heralded the civility and progress for Scandinavians by curbing their violent nature and instead cultivated a more rational and diplomatic kingdom.
Thorfinn and Canute teach us that those who show their actions, whether good or bad, can change the world, not through words. peace. war. It teaches us that no matter which option we choose, some kind of “sacrifice” is required. Will you choose to sacrifice others? Will you choose self-sacrifice? Both are paths of hardship. But this is “reality”.
I would say its how they lived that determined Canute's violence. He wanted a larger army to control other lands then create peace later. He cant afford this army consisting of almost all the vikings, so he needs to steal farm lands from many nobles. Then with this terrifying force, he creates peace much later. People of the time were paranoid and lived in a might makes right world. Sadly, Canute isnt the only king to try this, it just creates more war and madness.
What askeladd thinking? You forget that askelass is viking himself kill and many stole/plunder each village they see and make them slave too. Just rewatch s1 ep 6, when they raid the village and they send thorfinn to scout in village and thorfinn slightly adapted by the old woman by the later. their village was burned down by asaskeladd group and man was killed and woman was capture by aaskeladd man same as what happened to arnhied village.
@@kaze.14 are you sure watching the s1 and the reason why askeladd choose to make canute to become king is to protect the wales which is the homeland of his mother. When king sweny called his mother slave and threatened to conquer the wales and that askeladd decided to kill king sweny in order to save the wales and canute acted as he lose his mind like a mad man
I love how realistic these characters are & feel, because Einar made the most sense, but how does one change people cultured in war? Thorfinn is making up for his sins as someone who's been both Viking & a slave, Einar is a victim of two kings and Canute is rebelling at the idea of humans suffering through trials & temptations before getting to paradise... he has the power to do something. Canute is rebelling against "God", for me that always spelled "god complex". Askeladd chose to swear his fealty towards Canute, because he wasn't going take lives unnecessarily... but lives would be lost nonetheless and Canute is attempting to build something no Viking has ever attempted and like Thorfinn & Einar realized theirs is "...but a dream" at this point.
Me too. I think what's especially great it that we can see where each character is coming from, how their lives have led them to these perspectives and ideals. But in the end all 3 of them want the same thing - a paradise. What's different is the means
I’ve been waiting for this for a LOOONG TIME to be adapted, and I’m beyond satisfied. Although they shift some panels of the manga, it ain’t bad as I anticipated
Noooo you paused for 5 mins trying to prove something that was proven by the show a min later if you hadn't paused 😭😭😭😭😭 Canute still somewhat believes in the concept of heaven since he himself aknowledges the existence of god so he thinks the innocents he has killed will probably reach heaven which is why he doesn't feel the need to spare them any sympathy but for the vikings he does since they're doomed in the afterlife
Canute wants to save the vikings precisely because nobody likes them. He feels pity for them because god has long abandoned them and just like how askeladd hates the vikings, everybody does too and canute is like who's to stand up for them if not the one who commands them?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Askeladd hated the vikings because they were brainless brutes, but Canute made it his own goal of saving the vikings from that life, is what I got from it. That's why he's against looting and razing villages.
I feel Canute's statement of "Fighting God" doesn't necessarily mean in the literal sense. I believe he is trying to inculcate the good morals religion (in this case, Christianity) has to offer to the Vikings who weren't made aware of these things because of their barabaric nature and to change their mindset from being barabaric to affirm strength to that of a "TRUE WARRIOR" as stated by Thors. I believe that's what he means by "saving the Vikings." Saving the Vikings from this barabric lifestyle.
I get that but also I feel this is a true rebellion against god for Canute. He believes in god and his ideals but believes that god will not allow the vikings to reach paradise so he wants to change that
Great reaction as always!!! And sorry if this comes to be considered spam, it is not my intention to disturb but... Mai, I'd like to recommend an anime for you to watch when you can (although it would be lovely if you reacted to it), seriously, it's a hidden gem with a deaf-mute protagonist as radiant as our Sunbeam Mob "Ousama Ranking" Trust me, you won't regret it.
Yeah Canute has become obsessed with God to the point he’s started sidelining his original goal. Which he technically still wants to achieve but he’s like trying to oppose both god and achieve a paradise except now he’s willing to walk down a path of corpses. He’s in a weird limbo where he believes in god but also hates God. Did you notice how Thorfinn’s old voice slipped out when he started yelling at Drott?!? I love that little touch the VA has done a great job changing up to a softer chill voice for season 2! It kinda almost made you forget how he used to talk!!
Yeah it's like Canute still has the same motivations and ideals that developed towards the end of season 1 but his method of obtaining them and the way in which he thinks he can achieve them is different. And it all related back to god. Yes omg hearing Thofrinn voice as he was shouting really took me back to season 1, it came as such a shock after how different his voice has been this season
On the topic of whether this is what Askeladd would have wanted from Canute, you got to remember the only thing that Askeladd really wanted was a leader to follow and safety for Wales. He was never really all too interested in the whole Paradise part of Canute's plan so long as Wales would be free from any coming wars
@@deb9548 Like I said, while I was reacting that was the case but rewatching on my own has now changed that. Sometimes it can be hard to process and fully understand dialogue heavy scenes while reacting

Towards the end and when I rewatched it on my own I came to realise that. They want the same things but it's their methods that are clashing which is what's so interesting about it. Even though like you said killing and slavery was common back then, I think the whole point of Vinland Saga is to move away from that which is why even though Canute's goal is paradise, his means are wrong through and through
THORS lives through Thorfinn! I am so proud !!!!! 😭😭😭😭
HE DOESSS 😭
Thorfinn took almost 70 punches to the face and then was like "Y'all wanna be friends?"
He truly is the greatest.
This episode was amazing from start to finish, the highlight of our weeks you right and not many animes have that power. Nice reaction btw
Thank you :)
Thors gotta be the proudest dad in the afterlife right now. His son has become a true man and warrior.
@@kaze.14 stop reposting the same stuff over and over man 😂 also, just wait for the next episode. You'll see
Yeah his motivation is the same though his method has changed.
I'm having flashbacks of Fate/Zero when Rider, Gilgamesh, and Saber had that banquet discussing their different POV's of what a king should be
I loved that too. I think it's such a great representation of who Thorfinn is and his previous life as a viking on the battlefield
thorfinn a real man that deserve to be respected
Finally Thorfinn and Canute meet again!!! not under the best circumstances but still🙂
also Thorfinns resolve is unbreakable✊
@@ajch22 true..... That's the beauty of the story..... U will have to rewatch it .... Then u will get it 😌
@@ajch22He wanted to conquer the farm and sacrifice Ketil to prevent conflicts that could start and bring even more victims.
I had goosebumps the entire episode, i love thorfinn so much he's one of my favorite anime characters
I think Canute is "saving" the Vikings by trying to control them so they won't be attacking villages whenever they want to. Well, that's what I'm thinking but I can be wrong.
a nice nod to what he did in real life which was turn the vikings into a normal kingdom
You are totally right. I read the manga. He will change them, and kill those who continue path of violence
He needs strength to gather them and control
That's exactly why he was called Canute The Great. He heralded the civility and progress for Scandinavians by curbing their violent nature and instead cultivated a more rational and diplomatic kingdom.
I think it's definitely part of it and I actually really applaud that
Really glad to have found the channel and seeing your Vinland and Mob reactions. Also gotta say I appreciate the Clannad outro aong
Aww happy to have you along for the ride. Hehe love seeing people notice the dango outro 🥰
12:00 That's a look of utter disbelief and deep admiration and respect in silence for Thorfinn they are showing
In history king Canute became one of the most greatest Viking leader and the first Viking king to be Christian.
Thank you for warning them not to separate before reaching Iceland together
HAHAHAHA YOU’RE WELCOME
Noooo you paused for 5 mins trying to prove something that was proven by the show a min later if you hadn't paused 😭😭😭😭😭
Canute still somewhat believes in the concept of heaven since he himself aknowledges the existence of god so he thinks the innocents he has killed will probably reach heaven which is why he doesn't feel the need to spare them any sympathy but for the vikings he does since they're doomed in the afterlife
Exactly, up this commwnt
He never mentioned anything about heaven of how the innocents he killed are guaranteed heaven while vikings aren't...?
If thorfinn knew jiujitsu then he would just neutralize his enemy without any violence by not getting beat up that much.
Haha but then it wouldn't be Vinland Saga would it?
@@OtakuMai well you got a point.
Canute wants to save the vikings precisely because nobody likes them. He feels pity for them because god has long abandoned them and just like how askeladd hates the vikings, everybody does too and canute is like who's to stand up for them if not the one who commands them?
Yeah by saving them it is the ultimate rebellion against god and the way of the world during that time
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Askeladd hated the vikings because they were brainless brutes, but Canute made it his own goal of saving the vikings from that life, is what I got from it. That's why he's against looting and razing villages.
Actually you might be right now that I think about it
"I dont have enemy "
Epic moment right here thorfin such gigachad 😎
Canute, the self-aware corrupt moralist
Seeing you fangirl over Thorfinn is adorable 😂
I feel Canute's statement of "Fighting God" doesn't necessarily mean in the literal sense. I believe he is trying to inculcate the good morals religion (in this case, Christianity) has to offer to the Vikings who weren't made aware of these things because of their barabaric nature and to change their mindset from being barabaric to affirm strength to that of a "TRUE WARRIOR" as stated by Thors. I believe that's what he means by "saving the Vikings." Saving the Vikings from this barabric lifestyle.
I get that but also I feel this is a true rebellion against god for Canute. He believes in god and his ideals but believes that god will not allow the vikings to reach paradise so he wants to change that
My only complain is that Thorfinn looked more beaten in the manga like his face wasn't literally recognizable
fr fr dude ground thorfinn's face up
I guess I can be hard to match animation exactly to the manga in that respect especially when he has to look that way for the remainder of the ep
Man, everyone just seems to out Canute for being so power hungry.
It did seem that way towards the start of the confrontation but then as it progressed it became clear that that was no the case
Fun fact. Karlsefni as a name means “the makings of a man” take that however you’d like too.
It suits Thorfinn perfectly!!!
Thank you! I've already seen all of Ousama Ranking, was watching it as it was airing and am watching the spinoff now - it's an amazing anime
Even Mai is powerless.. to stop the buffering of the streaming site..
Next episode is going to be legendary!
My boys 😭💙
Yes omg hearing Thofrinn voice as he was shouting really took me back to season 1, it came as such a shock after how different his voice has been this season
what Canute means by saving the Vikings, he means save them from his way of life, not literally save them giving them resources or something
The Goat🐐❤
On the topic of whether this is what Askeladd would have wanted from Canute, you got to remember the only thing that Askeladd really wanted was a leader to follow and safety for Wales. He was never really all too interested in the whole Paradise part of Canute's plan so long as Wales would be free from any coming wars
It was more than just Wales though. He wanted a leader like Arteries, whether this is what he envisioned or not I'm not sure about
Man I'm gonna be so sad when this season ends, more so along with your reactions
Awww me too, I’m gonna miss the series so much and watching it along with all you guys 🥺🥺
i got emotional seeing you getting emotional
ngl I was honestly worried Canute went Caligula for a few sec there 23:02
Of course he can’t stop waves lol. If they do that like magic thing, I guess I wouldn’t watch this anime anymore 😅
Yeah no it would ruin Vinland saga to introduce magic or anything like that 😂
I recommend you golden kamuy it's a Japanese style western about a hunt for gold one of the best seinen stories
Thorfinn is arguably The best viking protagonist in a Nordic based series even more cooler than Ragnar from Vikings!
@OtakuMai Please don't watch the scene after the credits. There are big spoilers
Too late 😅
You are severely misunderstanding Canute’s character
Yeah honestly I think I did first time around. It took me a second watch without reacting to actually take in what he was saying and process
@@OtakuMai uh…sure but the way you reacted certainly didn’t feel that way i think?

Manga is much better
I'm a little disappointed that the Thorfinn scene without enemies isn't executed properly, the Canute scene actually looks much better, from the animation and visuals it looks much better than the manga.
Exactly which part did you think they didn't execute properly? If you mean the part where the shot doesn't pan out as thorfinn says the line then I agree
Nah they did it better than the manga actually so continue to cry and seeth "LolixHunter"
manga panel was better they should of put thorfinn more beaten up like in the manga but it was cool overall
I told you a few episodes back it wasn't going to go well if Thorfinn and Canute met... So, OtakuMai. Why were you so intent on Canute and Thorinn to meeting???
I have no regrets, the meeting was as great as I wanted it to be!
