- Let's take a look at some of the ways Bandai Namco convert 2D actions into 3D movement for Super Smash Bros.
This time, it's the Belmonts!
Thanks for watching this one, if you want to help the channel, definitely share it around, tell your friends, especially if they're animation students!
If you want the channel to grow, consider watching the whole video, as UA-cam promotes watch time over view count, so the longer viewers watch a video for, the more UA-cam will promote that video.

"hench beefcake walk" is the perfect way to describe the walk cycle from castlevania. They need to have that on the box art.
MISTAKES:
Snake was revealed before Sonic for Brawl.
Smash is developed by Bandai Namco, not Nintendo.
thanks for the video.
Bandai Namco didn't develop Brawl
Oh whoops you're right it was Sora, BN did the remaining ones.

0:12 "The whip action that most Belmonts perform"
*shows a Morris*
Phew, I'm glad you got that comment back in!
Yeah I didn't research that character.
Isn't he, like, distantly related or something? That whip action is a dominate gene.
@@MtnSmithy If i'm not wrong, a member of the belmonts had a child with a Morris and they kept the Morris name
The Vampire Killer was passed on from there, but only the direct descendants, As Jonathan Morris says in Portrait of Ruin, he can't use the Vampire Killer as intended because he's not a direct ancestor.
@@lvbboi9 Which means that, through a certain ritual, he can effectively use it to its full potential, however that will end up draining his lifeforce and kill him, which is how his father died
@@samueltaillant8825 Didn't know that part
The Belmont's chad strides are really intimidating, even when they crouch walk.
A+ tier walk at least.
This is even better than the last one!
Woah! Didn’t expect to see you guys here.
I'd love to watch another one of these on Mega Man
I remember trying to think about how the Belmonts would throw the dagger in Smash and not being able to come up with a good throwing animation that didn't overlap with the other projectiles; they did a great job making each of them look completely distinct from one another.
As someone who really loves the gamefeel of Classicvania, I was ecstatic when Simon and Richter were revealed for Smash, complete with hefty NES animations, so of course I had to check out your view on it too, soon as I saw the video!
I wish Simon Belmont was my dad. The way he walks would clear out rooms
Yes Megaman and Sonic would be awesome to see in the "Converting 2D animation into 3D" series (especially Megaman since I thought MM11 didn't feel "right" in the movement department). I really want to see your take on MM in Smash vs Capcoms different 2D/3D games and of course Sonic would be interesting to see your perspective and to hear your knowledge about (that sentenced felt grammatically weird but I guess it got the point across)!
PS. I always watch to the end because it always feels like I'm learning something interesting or notice something cool about some detail in a game I really like (as I did with Castlevania today and as I did with one of my favorite game series, Metroid). Thank you so much for that stuff ever since I started watching all your videos this year!
Thank you for making the effort of teaching and explaining this. I greatly appreciate it.
Thank you for watching!
More of this man, Smash's animations are super interesting to study
Oooh, yes, more 2D to 3D! One with a lot of potential is Arthur from the Makaimura/Ghosts 'n Goblins series. He's had a few 3D adaptations at this point -- including one for the PSP-exclusive Goku Makaimura -- as well as a fair number of 2D versions at varying levels of detail.
This purposeful stride has been passed down the Belmont clan for generations!
Having anticipation is key in animation HOWEVER when you break what is anticipated with something more exciting and unexpected then it will have a bigger impact, just like your videos endings :D
loveyoubye
I love the superfast tiny infodumps
I freakin love these videos dude. Every time another one gets published I reserve time in my day exclusively to watch it. Sucks the algorithm is so bad, if I had a million dollars to give to anyone it would probably be you 😂
That means a lot, thank you! It helps that you find time to watch them!
Sakurai's team did an incredible job translating Simon and Richter's movements into Smash Bros. They nearly got all the necessary moves in, as well (forward smash should have been the Flame Whip attack), making them really satisfying to use.
Yeah the team have done wonders, and the historic influence in the moves is sublime.
Yes please! Do more 2D to 3D videos, I’d love to see Sonic and Megaman
Oh yeah, that was the Good Stuff™
I love learning on this channel! Also, really slick presentation and editing. Distilling and showcasing all your ideas and points into a digestible format for viewers is expertly done. A winner is you! 💚
Thank you so much!
Sakurai and his team pulled this off flawlessly *chef' kiss*
Really love this channel. I especially love the outro lmao
I never get tired of detailed looks into this kind of thing. Sakurai's team pours so much love into bringing these characters into the Smash world, and I don't think it can be appreciated enough!
the moment i saw the Belmont Strut in smash i laughed my ass off... "They did it! They found a way to put in the proper Belmont Strut!!!"
The Belmont walk cycle is unparalleled.
Sakurai didn't say that the two Belmonts in Smash echoed each other for nothing, just as Richter takes moves from Simon like most of the basic whipping animations and the iconic walk, Simon as well borrows animations from Richter like the uppercut, slide-to-flying kick, dash attack, jumping, running and of course Grand Cross, they both introduced many techniques that would be used by later Belmonts such as Juste and Julius, they did an amazing job capturing their animations in 3D.
What a vibe, great video. Nintendo definitely puts a lot of thought into these animations and you highlight that perfectly
Thanks! I've actually been reminded (as I forgot) it's actually a lot of Bando Namcai's development that makea these games great, Nintendo is largely a publisher.
The Belmont adaption to smash is pretty high up for best translation in the game animation wise at least.
My favorite is that the ftilt is so close to the original whipping that it even disappears to nowhere afterwards, passing up on the chance to have an actual end lag animation.
I always smile when I see a new video from you !
I always smile seeing nice comments!
I really enjoy your videos. The ending of this one is just gold! Thanks for making these.
Love it, Dan!
I will always enjoy listening to you speak passionately about your chosen craft. Please keep it up when you have the time. It's lovely!
I'm just over all happy of how castlevania was represented in smash, not just Simon and Richter being playable, but Alucard as an assist trophy and how he is just symphony of the night Alucard, even using the back dash to move and has the one weapon everyone that casually plays that game tries to get (the crissigram, atleast i think that is how its spelled) the stage with the back ground bosses, the freaking music!! And let's not forget the big boy himself Dracula. They even did a neat thing with Pit's palutena's guidance thing where Alucard talks to Pit to explain Richter a little. I still think that castlevania is easily the best implemented series in smash in just how good everything is at giving you that old castlevania feels. Its obvious sakurai and his team go out of their way for all 3rd party characters, I mean Terry and minecraft Steve are both great in how they represent their games, but for me, even if they are not my favorite to play in smash, the Belmont are still number 1 for everything else.
Thank you for still making videos ♥️
Thank you for still watching!

SOMEONE GETS IT!!!!!!!
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy Tbh, I was surprised no-else else had said it yet.
There's been one other person since you commented. It's a pretty obscure reference, to be fair.
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy I keep forgetting it's an almost 20 year-old show. Ah well. At any rate, loved the video. Your animation breakdowns are always great but this one seemed to lean a little more on humor than usual and there were some fun low key references. I'll be looking forward to whatever you put up next!
I was literally half way through typing "W-was that a Look Around you reference?". Bloody obscure.
that fake out in the end was amazingly done
More people watch the end of my videos than I thought 🤔
Awhhh dude. Thanks for making these videos! I'm subbed and I love your topic.
Amazing selection of background music, Super Castlevania IV ost is really good.
0:54 Solid Snake: "Am I a joke to you?"
That ending hit kinda deep ngl. Love your content, Dan! Hope you'll keep at it!
Mm, it's a harsh truth these days, for a lot of UA-camrs. Thanks for watching!
This is great! I love these 2D to 3D animation analyses!
YOoo i'd love to see more of those. Smash Bros Ultimate animations are what inspires me the most to animate so seeing someone else analyse them is going to be fun and helpful
These videos are very helpful and inspires me to animate more, and study the art, atmosphere and animations of every video game I play. I come here often, to see what new thing you have to teach. Keep up the good work. 👍
Thank you!
awesome analysis and i really enjoyed that bit in the end.
Thanks!
Gonna need that Mega Man analysis. Do it for us fellow Mega Men!
Sakurai is a damn perfectionist.
I dunno, man. Ganondorf
I just stumbled across your channel, and this video was GREAT! DEFINITELY keep THE 2D to 3D comparisons up, this was quite the treat!
Thank you!
I would definitly love to see more of these
Yes, I'd love more of these kinds of videos. Thanks in advance.
Great video as always!
Ahh, it's so sad to hear your lament at the end! This channel is so succinct, polished, and darn good! It's a real shame how much manipulated viewer reach really dampens some truly special channels, as this one is top notch!
Thanks so much! Yeah, UA-cam became too big for itself to be managed properly and it's all automated now, the saddest thing is that there's no alternative, they own the monopoly on video hosting.
Goodtendo™️ lmao I love that not so subtle slap
0:51 I'm pretty sure Solid Snake is the first third party character revealed.
The Smash Ultimate website lists Snake as Fighter Number 31 while Sonic is 38.
Snake was revealed at the 2006 E3, while I think Sonic was in 2007 at the Nintendo Media Summit, or at least he was first playable there.
Love your videos! Love the ending!
Definitely want to see more of this type of video! I sure wish Samus got this treatment.
Just discovered your channel, I’m obsessed with it!!!! Love your work!!!!!!
Thank you!
Yes, I want more of this. thanks
That last segment was great
These videos are a lot of fun :D
Love these videos. They actually helped me learn more about animation, atmosphere, etc, so that I can apply them to my college courses in Game Development. I don't think I can allow myself to not watch one of your videos. I just love them.
Thanks so much, I'm glad they're helpful! I'm actually an animation lecturer too, so it's good to get feedback like this.
This guys quality is way beyond high tier, he needs and deserves way more subs!
Thank you for this. Anything with 3D modeling helps me learn more about creating models
I now feel the urge to play Castlevania again.
Great analysis Dan! And nice touch with the visuals as always
Always astounded by the quality of the content here. The passion and knowledge conveyed succinctly and effectively paired with razor-sharp editing. Hope you have a restful holiday (as best as possible) and I can empathise with burnout/disillusionment with the online content pipeline. We are all going through it with quarantine at the moment so for what it's worth know I think you're doing a truly great job! (not that worth is tied to the productivity of course).
Thanks for the positive feedback!
Luckily I don't rely on the income made from UA-cam like many other channels do, so I guess the pressure is off, resulting in a less strict timeline. Which is good and bad I suppose!
Have a great break!
This is awesome! Yes please, more 2d to 3d comparisons
This is great, more of these please!!!
Yes, please, more of these. Although if you're focusing on 2D to 3D conversions, maybe you could have a chapter for big characters?
Loving you using the sonic spinball chaos emerald sound effect for these aside explanation titles.
I love that you knew the music! 1000 points to you, sir.
First of all, awesome video dude! The way we always mention sequelitis when we talk about gamedesign in general is incredible. For me, this work by Egoraptor proved that it goes far beyond a superficial analysis of elements of playing. And he was precise to approach games that are so culturally relevant in way, games as such that have their elements replicated til today.
I'm so sad he no longer does the Sequelitis stuff, it felt so potent and engaging. I wish I had the time and energy to replicate that style! Maybe I still will.
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy I feel you but, and you are the right guy to say this, the animation part was trick and tiresome.
I know I wish you could make this your full-time job. Your videos are really well made, high quality content every time.
Thank you so much! It'd be great if it were a viable option to live off and profit from, but unfortunately I don't produce often enough for UA-cam to promote my vids 😩
I'm glad you enjoy them though!
I too would love another one of these!
hey! listening to the end of the video i felt that i should comment :) thanks for all your videos! and while u keeping doing, ill keeping watching, having fun and learning a lot =]
Hey, thanks a lot! While I'm not making videos as often as I used to, I do still make them, so it's good to know people still watch them!
Love these, do more of these
I just realized spleunky's whip might've took inspiration from belmont's... only thing is spleunky has backwhipping to abuse.
i love these videos on old 2d sprite animation
Ah, a new video from one of my favorite Dan's on the internet.
Will go nice with Yatch Club announcing they are developing Ninja Gaiden style game.
I wish every game company had the animation budget Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has.
Also, that ending segment hits in the feels. I am glad you teach about animation.
Oh... I am still typing this comment without adding anything important to it, oh shit.
Hey, a comment's a comment! Thanks!
YES I remember asking this question awhile ago. This maybe odd, but this is so needed in my life at the moment. I'm going through such a bad time now so this video brings alot of joy. Thank you.
I'm glad it's helped!
love your content!!!
You got me into the plan, to become a charackter animator!
Pls continue your great work!
ps.
would love to see you compairing the animations of the biggest mobas to each other.
Guess that would bring quite a lot of those fancy klicks, everybody needs :D
Thanks for watching, glad to hear it!
i like the word explanations cool idea! and that was a good ending xD
Your content is Gold 👍
These videos are awesome!
Thank you!
Yes! more please, thanks
This was great!!
Totally worth the watch for the genetic beefcake humor alone.
Loved the video.
great video as always
Thanks!
Didn't expect the ending but I might just stick around to see if it ever happens again
That bit at the end earned you a sub😂
Great video! I would imagine the limited space in the cartridge. Also to make the most out of the keyframes. Drove the iconic walk cycle we all know love and would notice if it were missing.
Oh absolutely, I made a video looking at this idea too
ive been looking into modding characters into rivals of aether because i love coming up with movesets for these kinds of games. this is great material to look into how its done
“Goodtendo” awesome
If you haven't already, videos on Ryu and Terry would be amazing.
You’ve got such a cool channel. Don’t stop!
Thank you!
Great study as always!! I think Castlevania and Mega Man are the (guest) franchises that are represented the best in Smash Ultimate when it comes to the characters, music, etc. Richter is my main and the joy of playing as him comes mostly from how it almost feels like you're just playing Castlevania... but in Smash xd
awesome video, perfect outro
Heh, thanks!
It's crazy how good these turned out in 3d
It's remarkable, isn't it
As a classic Castlevania fan. This warms my heart to see the details within each movement. Even though the past was limited, current capabilities are astounding. I would love to see Sakurai direct a Castlevania game after Smash. Seriously
I would definitely like to see more of this fir every character in smash
It's crazy to me that I'm a huge Castlevania fan now. 😅 The weight in all of Castlevania's animations is what makes it. I love them so much. Especially that goofy walk cycle... The Belmont strut, so cool, and Smash captured it perfectly, while obviously adding frames of animation much like other games that have been around for years. Mega Man and Castlevania carry that similarity honestly. They didn't truly evolve the movement of their characters, rather just added onto it... Ignoring spin-offs and subseries, because those have to allow for more. The metroidvania games have a bit more to them in terms of variety, but that's because they're not the Belmonts half the time and thus they aren't contractually obligated to do the strut.
I never did get to comment on this video, but it's good as always. Hope all is well over there Dan, can't wait until the next time you upload.
Yes I like these 2d to 3d comparisons :)
