Thanks to all my Patrons who've supporting me so far. I'm going to be taking a bit of a break from video making right now, but I'll be back soon!
Stay safe, stay home and wash your hands!
#AnimalCrossingNewHorizons #DoomEternal - Ігри
Thanks to everyone who's supported me in anyway. Patrons, subscribers, commenters, people who like and share, people who simply watch the video, people who follow me on Twitter, people who share my stuff on Reddit and people who've stuck through this mini-series on the Five Fundamentals.
I'm gonna take a break from video making for a short while, I've blown a fuse and need to do something else for a short bit. Views and revenue have steadily declined since Christmas, so all this effort feels like it's taken a toll.
I'll be back with a video later in the summer, but i'm gonna take some well needed rest, spend some time with my girls, work on my indie game, and just staying safe and at home while this whole pandemic blows over.
Thanks again to everyone!
Loveyoubye!
Video Game Animation Study “take a break” we all know you’re going to play animal crossing like everyone else lmao
I'll be watching my partner play it 😆
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy Wholesome 100. Enjoy your break!
Great job on this mini-series! While I have only dipped into game animation thanks to Unity, I know this series will aid me in creating sprite based animations. Also, it’s awesome to hear that you are working on an indie game. I’m looking forward to trying it out. Be safe and enjoy your time with your family!
4:58 wait how was that in left 4 dead, i dont remember that part at all
Congrats on finishing the series, Dan!
Cheers, Mark! 👊🏼🤠
I love the internet when wholesome stuff like this happens
The Green Goat Indeed
@@greengoat1o1 It really makes me believe in humanity. They should do a crossover mini-series. That would be the best idea.
I was surprised this wasn’t an April fools joke. This was a really good video!
Let’s enjoy all the elegance
didnt notice that until now
It's nice to see how simple or complex interactions can be in games. Sometimes you dont need a unique animation for everything especially if the players focus is on something else. Great video as always Dan!
Thanks Pro!
Yeah I think getting the elegance balance right is difficult, especially if you're a big team.
Every video that comes out today I feel I'm being trolled but even if you was trolling. I would enjoy the... elegance!
On the recent views being low for this series, the 12 principles videos over at New Frame Plus are lower than their other videos as well but I'm really glad you guys are both putting out these videos. I animate for games and I've really enjoyed this series.
BTW, just ordered my copy of the book, so Cooper owes you a thank you (and maybe a cut).
Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I imagine these are more 'technical' videos for some audiences, but it feels good putting them out either way.
It's neat how that "gamer sense" of interacting within a games environment can be formed through elegant design, always easy to tell what you can do with what parts of a world.
I think back to how the film strip animations in Bayonetta were originally done to save time, but they ended up taking longer than the traditionally animated cutscenes. Whooooops.
Nice job finishing the series! Have fun on your break, you deserve it. And don’t worry about us, we still have the other Dan lol.
elegance is really important for little details, I love the cool details in animal crossing, and it's always important to keep a balance between elegance and gameplay
It's been kinda surreal getting a new "fundamentals" video, and not knowing which Dan it will be from. Honestly, I always hope it's from you. Your videos feel casual and relaxed. It's great that this project is finished, have a break and we'll be here when you return.
Thanks for the kind words!
Music (anything not listed is personal or royalty free music):

2:50 = Animal Crossing New Horizons - 10am
6:50 = Mega Man X8 - Option
7:32 = Time Trax (SEGA Mega DriveGenesis) Music Track 4
Everytime I see a "Dan" pop up in my recommendations it's always a fundamentals video that is criminally underviewed. Cheers to finishing the series! Can't wait for the next upload!
It's an endeavour I was determined to complete, but it was fun to do, even if not fruitful.
Why is this fantastic content not more popular? Editing is spot on, info is well researched, writing is well paced, examples are well thought out and concise. I am computer scientist who wants to be an indie developer, and understandings of animation are like a tantalizing low hanging fruit. This series brings me closer to a well rounded understanding I crave.
Thanks for the kind words!
Wow, an April 1 video that isn’t a joke!
Thanks for the series man, loved it!
Commenting for engagement.
I'm afraid I don't have an expensive ring 💍
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy I love you for who you are.
Sad that you might be MIA for awhile, but you do you. Stay safe and enjoy time with the family
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy you my friend...know how to make a good joke
Congrats on finishing your series! Super interesting seeing how limiting the height of interactable objects helps players read level design more clearly. I absolutely love that side of design.
Just binged this series! Thanks so much for your hard work. :-)
Hey thanks! Don't thank just me, thank Jonathan Cooper, too!
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy will do! I’m definitely interested in his book now.
I really enjoyed this series, and your videos as a whole, Dan! ^_^ I'll look forward to your return. :3 please stay well and have fun pursuing other goals!
Also that game looks cute!! That's amazing you drew all the assets yourself! ^_^
Thanks for the support! I look forward to my mini-comeback!
Great video series, I'm going to try to put all this new knowledge into practice for future animations!
Also, take care of yourself and your family! We'll patiently await your return
Hey this is more useful information than what I’ve been learning under lockdown
Great video as always.
“Such Elegance!”
That bit on having standardized assets/having walls at the same height, my mind was blown :o Thanks for this series that taught not only 3d animation but game design in general as well, was really fun to watch through.
Hey thanks for the kind words! Flat you enjoyed it!
Pretty *elegant* video.
A great way to end a great series. Nice one, Dan! I think part of these design choices also come down to style and/or trying to preserve a style that was once because of hardware limitations. A bit like the close up grass in Animal Crossing, and even those really basic animations. I'm sure even ID would argue you don't have legs in DOOM because it's traditional not to (and a way to excuse them for not attempting it!). See you on the other side my friend. That pint is going to taste oh so good!
Thanks sonny jim!
Yeah, I know what you mean, sometimes it's a style choice rather than a practical one.
It's funny though, in Doom Eternal, especially the clip I showed, you are your dude's get as you land, but then they disappear.
Strange.
Man, that pint. I cannot wait.
You've done such good work with this series! Great work!
Wait, you've been working on videos since *when*?! Go take a bloody nap, damn you!
Thank you so much!
*top video. *Keep Up The Good Work! 😎🙏
"it doesn't mean you have to go on the cheap" *shows a clip of X6*
Lol!
Nice! I gotta say that the kicking animation from RE4 with the door and kicking the enemy are different though. Just something that stuck out. Anyway I love your videos, keep it up!
Yeah they are, though it likely wouldn't have been too much to change the animation. Thanks though!
Yes. Please teach us. Because they don’t tell you this in school.
I feel elegance should be more about how great you can make your graphics/animation look with your budget AND gameplay considered. It should look great but not interfere with gameplay but it's a rare problem to find with this style.
This is where animation gets clever as more techniques are used which I adore.
Great video and end to the series.
Thanks!
Yeah it's a funny one, it's kinda vague but also covers a lot.
I was going to write an essay regarding the ludonarrative dissonance of your pre-socratic approach to a space shooter, but it ain’t in the description!
Argh, knew I forgot something! Hang on
Okay demo link is in the description now!
Fire away......
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy I think I’ve developed scopophobia lol the 2nd boss looks especially great btw! Oh and here’s hoping you’ll eventually include the option to unable the CRT effect.
Yeah, it's still a very ongoing thing, we've already removed the CRT in our current build.
If you join the discord (can't remember what the name is but you can find it on our Twitter) you can keep up to date with everything.
i love how the outro always cuts out
That's my thang 😎
I was watching this in bed next to my half alseep girlfriend, who woke up to ask...did he just say love you bye??
MattHirst “Yes honey, I’m leaving. There...another girl...”
“(starts crying) _sniff_ but why!”
“I’m sorry, it’s not you, I just need more financial security!”
“Who is she?”
“The mayor’s assistant. And I’m the mayor! (pulls out 3DS)”
“No! Nooo!”
“I’m sorry, my decision’s final! I’ll still be living here though since I need shelter.”
It really makes you elegance like Villager
Bit late but Cool Video!
Thanks Anan!
I hope to see your content soon! Are there other video makers in the genre like game makers toolkit or frame plus or something that you could maybe partner with?
NFP seems to be doing his own thing right now, and I think this avenue or exploration isn't quite up Mark's alley.
Good idea though!
Boy was that couple seconds long clip of X6 well-tumed. I was just watching a stream of it yesterday and I'd forgotten how the bosses basically only have key frames and boy does it look choppy as a result.
It's a shame, I like the game for reasons that don't really hold up, ha.
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy X6 is unironically my favorite X because it is soooo close to being the best X game, but the mistakes are so catastrophic that it's the second worst. Absolutely fascinating game. Banger soundtrack though.
The music definitely elevates it all!
Animal crossing - Around 700 characters (villager + special) using broadly the same animations, countless objects using the exact same set of rotation and placement animations (though some have special interact animations like my analogue kitchen scale that bounces when you interact with it), but also placeable - rotating - fans, and those objects are placeable outside in any of four cardinal directions, meaning that everything has to be rigged to animate wind with verisimilitude (the animation for that is likely a physics system rather than hand animated, but there's a reason most games with placeable objects don't give you nearly this much freedom in placing things that should react to wind and dynamic air flow sources, right?)
That's probably right, yeah. You have to save some memory and be sneaky somewhere.
Can we hear more if these would west development stories of the 90's? They sounds interesting.
So the level design should influence the animation, and vice versa...an interesting cycle of creative consideration.
It's certainly something to consider
I don't have twitter, so will you be announcing on youtube when you're game comes out here as well? I'd really love to play it, but won't be able to find out when it comes out otherwise...
Oh yeah for sure, I'll probably spam it where I can, ha.
This game is amazing.
Nintendo got this game out at the perfect time and I love it.
It's the perfect game to escape the crazy world we live in.
The music pulls you right into the game and it's so laid back.
The graphics are beautiful.
The characters feel alive and everyone is unique.
This is an amazing game.

Video Game Animation Study is baller!
what app should we use to animate?
There's a few out there, Adobe Animate is a good basic one to get into if you're thinking 2D animation, and there's Toon Boom Harmony which is quite expensive for professionals. There's Rough Animator and ProCreate on iPad Pro, which are roughly $10-$15, and there's also Sketchbook which is free.
4:57, you sure about that "Left 4 Dead" there, man?
Yeah it's meant to be Wolfenstein 🤦🏻♂️
I have to say that in the last couple of videos I noticed a lot of mouth clicks on the audio. Maybe you should consider speaking further away from the microphone or something similar that could help with that, they're a pain to get rid off. Still, great video as usual!
Thanks for the feedback!
6;23 so if they didnt have a game animator, how did they create the game though?
They just did it themselves by winging it and hoped for the best
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy but i meant with what software and code?

Anybody have a rocket or a golden armor that I can craft. I'll give you the materials!
Sue me, but I really liked the animations in Watch_Dogs. For all the bad rep (much of it is deserved, not going to deny that), I really enjoyed moving around despite the *hold button to freerun* thing it had going. Like, the parkour minigame gets criticized for being, well, just running while you hold one or two buttons, but I thought Aiden's animations were fluid enough to make me enjoy just controlling him.
Is like to look into Legion, it's fascinating how they altered the animations for each person.
dan root had a more personlised feel and charm than the corporate, generic sounding video game animation study.
I'm sorry you feel that way.
I always see the same game being shown. I feel like I've been watching the same video for months
I personally do not think legs are important in firsrperson games. I wouldnt even notice!
But you would not believe how many (ive lost count) people will not play first person games entirely because legs arent used to being in them.
Really? I can't imagine that bring an actual thing unless they're some really uptight purists?
Is this a joke?
Depends if it's opposite day
