Given that the Wrecking Crew did a lot of the instrumentation for The Beach Boys, you have to wonder if they did the same for Petula Clark?? There are videos of Carol Kaye playing the bass line that appears in both songs.

I don't about the value of how this was cobbled together, but the main hook "don't sleep in the..." and "god only knows", show that the Hatch song was inspired by the landmark Beach Boys song from a year prior. Including production style on the hook section.Hatch said he cobbled it from 3 song ideas he had laying around. Apparently he had one of those ideas after listening to Pet Sounds. Hey, Pet Sounds=Pet Clark Sounds! I grew up listening to and enjoying both.

I only heard a few notes from Don't Sleep in the Subway and immediately found the link to God Only Knows which I love. I have not listen to Beach Boys songs in years, however the resemblance is undoubtedly. The only thing to say today is SHAME on Hatch. The only good things on his song are Petula's voice and Brian's stolen genius!!!

They don't sound that similar to me, and the processing to make equal keys doesn't help make the case that they much resemble each other.

I just heard Don't Sleep In the Subway for the first time last night and immediately I heard "God only knows". Both were stuck in my head all morning so I had to Google which came first then came to UA-cam to see if others heard how similar they are... I agree, the weird mashup here doesn't do it any favors. I'd say just listen to each song through, as they were originally produced, back to back and I think you'd hear it. The songs similarities are only while she's singing the line "Don't sleep in the subway".
