Japanese woodworking - Cutting out a Curved Beam
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 лис 2020
- In this video, I'll finish a curved beam. This kind of beam cannot be processed by pre-cut machines. So this time, I'll adjust the shape by chain saw. I have to imagine how to process it in advance, so it's a difficult job. I think this kind of natural shaped materials make a unique atmosphere.

Ah so inspiring to switch to more hand tools
I really like that you show the Japanese name for the tools and what it means!
Watching your enormous skills at work is so relaxing & absorbing Shoyan. I have never seen such skills like sharpening your chisels or a hand plane blade is so smooth that it looks as though you are not concentrating until suddenly you see those very tools at work & they are SO sharp & precise. Then to watch your skill with a hand saw & then with any & every power tool is spellbinding. Brilliant video my friend & thanks for sharing. Cheers, Don from South Australia.
I wish my dad was a carpenter.....so I can use all his tools instead of buying my own. 😂
Little by little you can buy
I feel like you wouldn't be allowed to use Soyan-san's tools until after 30 years training 😅
”Congratulations, Shoyan!”
”正やん、おめでとうございます!”
Your experience and skill of using the manual saw for making the Ari joint makes the process look so simple but it is totally not at all. You are very humble.
So awesome. A master craftsman. I love every video you post. Wish I could come to Japan and learn from you sir.
Very enjoyable. A very skilled carpenter.
I also really like your choice of music. I play guitar. That's fine playing. Great job
Love your videos, going to watch them all from the start! Thanks for taking the time to share your work!
Massive talent. Much respect.
Beautiful craftsmanship all the way through
Very good thank you
Such craftsmanship, thank you for sharing!
I need to watch this many times. I'm grateful to you for sharing. There is so much I need to learn. My father was a cabinet maker. I see timber framing to be very similar to cabinetry. Carpentry framing is usually finished to hide the components of the build. This video shows me that the structure is exposed to see its function.
I have questions about the tools: The planers and mortising drill press - Are these tools available in the USA? I have never seen them.
Thank You
excellent 😊
Hello i from Thailand capanter❤❤❤
Your work is amazing! Being a carpenter myself i know what it takes.
Beautifully done!
Thank for your videos
You are a Master Shoyan!!!!!
Merci !
great works !
Very talented craftsman 😁👍🏻
beautiful!
Very interesting!
I love uncle skill
Your are a master brother, amazing job how is this even possible, you still doing it like 500 years ago, just amazing
At the basic level it is a standard code of construction based on units and position.
Very much like a+b=c.
A position + type of joint = structual outcome.
This is fundamentally why such buildings and structures have a beauty that is timeless.
Merry good job you do excellent work and I will watch later when you work on the van McGeehan keep up the good work
Your machines that you use the 30 cm planer the mortise machine never seen anything like them. What is the planet machine you use that take a very thin skim off the timber to finish it like it has been polished so smooth never seen one of the keep the good work coming you are amazing 👍👍😀
Great video! Thank you for narrating.
You got a the cool tools you only need a mafell portable band saw.
Nice chain saw hasuji, otskaresama
Arigato Gozaimasu.
Being american is terrible, I have to convert every measurement to imperial to understand. 😄
You make great videos. Do you have a book for sale or instruction videos?
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
What is the string marking tool called at 5:55?
Sumitubo=墨つぼ
harashiko takagoshi - do you know this joint?
Makita 1002BA
For you girls wondering: The Makita 1002BA is a 4-3/8 inch Curved Base Planer. The planer is used for creating arches and arcs in timbers and working on scarfs in logs.
A curve cut out of a square log, meaning the grain is going straight and they are severed by the saw, is no where near as strong as a beam that's been steamed and bent.
I bet a steel i-beam would be stronger than both! But maybe what he's making doesn't require that much strength. Come to think of it, maybe the beam he created is strong enough for whatever he's using it for.
@@shaunpage4498 I think that he chose a timber that had a wonky bend so that the grain complimenting the arch? I agree with you about cutting those fibers. Maybe he found a shitty timber that suited this build?
I'm a little bit disappointed that you don't use your protective gear while using a chain saw. 気をつけてくダサい
Focused mind is best protection, love of wood makes possible, reading wood interesting, friends worthy respect sharpened tools are very, stones, water, steel, take good care.
Chainsaw in the face still mess up your day.
I agree, hearing protection etc is as important as cleaning and sharpening.
