    I cannot believe you aren't proud to do work in the 99.9th percentile of the the world's carpenters with "old" tools. I'd be honored just to watch you work in person. I've never seen such care and pride in someone's work. This is truly emotionally moving to watch.

      I mean, he uses a lot of modern tools also : lasers, screws, power tools, but in combination with manual ones, and never in a detrimental way of the finish product. Great lesson here

    Buying and using newer tools vs tools that are 20+ years old; almost always I prefer the older tool. Even if its older than me. Maybe the older tool doesnt look shinny any more but I know the care and quality was put into older tools.
    The phrase "designed to fail" comes to mind when I’m looking at expensive new tools. You use it and then a few months or just a year after the warranty has expired, your brand new tool is needing a major rebuild or its completely junk.
    Specific that you have tools which are working and probably as old as me (or older), I respect that quality that was considered and would want future generations to inherit my tools, than having to buy something that only lasts a few years (at most).

    • @dillpicklefig
      @dillpicklefig 3 місяці тому +1

      Absolutely agree. I'm a public monuments conservator so I don't work with wood often but mostly with masonry and bronze. Our shop has a mix of old and new tools and machinery and the old still works and operates as well as the day it was brought in with minimal upkeep.
      The newer stuff we do have is designed to fail. They may be sharper, more convenient, etc for a while but require constant maintenance, regular replacement of random small parts, and didn't really end up performing any better than the older tools.
      Unfortunately, manufacturing has become faster and cheaper over the years to prioritize profits. Old never means obsolete or ineffective!

      @kdtrimble Рік тому +1

      I would agree if the job was priced up front. But if it's priced by the hour, no fucking way. Even though the Japanese do a great detail job, they move very slowly. Believe me, I have seen more than one of these carpenters in Japan.

    • @Geceil
      @Geceil Рік тому

      @@kdtrimble yeah if its by the hour.. the amount would be huge!. But the amount of care and respect for your property is amazing! Guess professionalism pays in japan.
      I think minimum wage is a round 1,000 yen an hour.

    Superb craftsmanship, the quality of the materials you have at your disposal shines through. What I find interesting is the how similar the methods of construction are both in Japan and UK, , However here in the UK we will whenever possible construct a staircase complete and then fit. In 38 yrs of Carpentry and Joinery I have made up stairs in situ only a handful of times, Also for marking out purposes rather than marking out treads and risers individually we make a " Pitch Board " saves a lot of time and helps eliminate errors. Your groove cutter looked a handy piece of kit , however for a non wedged tread like this I still prefer to make a jig and router the main out then finish by hand , Each to there own thanks again great post
