  • Surviving in a van during a blizzard in Northern Sweden.
This was a lot of fun to make and experience an extreme weather event from a vehicle. We could have prepared better but you learn from your mistakes. We had just purchased this property in Sweden after moving country with only the contents of our campervans. See later videos if you're interested in how we renovated the old barn into an off grid cabin.
    MOST COMMON QUESTIONS
    Q. There is a house next to you, why not stay in there?
    A. The property has been abandoned for many years and is falling apart. No insulation or heating in the house.
    Q. Why is there only snow on one van? FAKE!!!
    A. Unfortunately we are unable to control mother nature and on this day she decided she didn't like my van so directed the winds perfectly that a drift would form on one side.
    Q. Why did you climb out the window if the other door was free?
    A. The other door was free of snow but we had built a wind skirt around the bottom which I didn't want to disturb so exiting out the window was the best option.
    Q. Why would anyone do this?
    A. Please see later videos on the channel to better understand our goals here 😊

I love how the other van had almost no snow around it. Amazing how a meter or two makes a difference on drifting snow.
Brings back days of winter camping and sleeping in a qwizzie and -30c temps and windchill of -45c and a buzzard going on for 4 days.
I remember as a teen we once got out of the house through the second floor windows and sliding of into the drift from the rooftop. Both front and back doors had drifts to the roof blocking the exits.
Glad you both enjoyed your winter snow storm and was laughing and having fun in it

My guess is that trying to stop the wind and snow from going under the van is a mistake that actually makes it snow in. If there was wind under the van, the snow would have blown away under that van too.

Hellooooo from the beach on the east coast of Central Florida!
Yes!!! This reminded me of many nights wayyy up high in Coloradoooo as I've van life'd for over 20 years. Some of my FAVORITE times was when I'd drive beyond the last of the snowed road and make my way to overlooks and land for the night deep in the Colorado deep snow.. I'd have Sushi, watermelon, pizza, and enough for a few days.
Then, when I was ready to drive back down to Boulder, to work, I'd jockey my way back to the plowed roads and drive the 30-ish miles back into the human population.
Yet, I'd return, again and again, and love love love, being out with the huge Mountain Lions, Ravens, and Magpies.
    Life.
    Adventures.
    Memories.
    And Loving Angels🎶🐰🎵🦁🎶🧡🎶

Outside around the van is going to turn into ice as the snow melts from the warmth coming from the van. Very common problem if you have a car with a warmer inside. Sometimes it can be really hard to get inside and open the doors. Also think about that you can be locked in at your place for a long time if there is no tractor with plough available. Especially if you live remote.

Just been thinking...I know dangerous but my engineering brain can't help it lol:)
I'm guessing by now your seeing a pattern of which direction the snow drifts form most commonly from i.e from the north, south, east or west? What about parking one van against the barn on the side that gets "least" snow build up from drifts and then park the other van beside that. This should keep the wind/snow off the sandwiched van and keep it warmer, would be a bonus if it was next to a door for easy entrance into the barn for firewood storage access?

    • @myswedishlife
      @myswedishlife 3 роки тому +1

although that's a good idea in theory. In practice it will cost you your life. snow falling off roofs kill people and crush cars!

    • @jbsmith1
      @jbsmith1 3 роки тому

@@myswedishlife Yes I thought snow fences or other device would be part of the roof structure and mandatory or Russian roulette in such a climate for the reasons you pointed out. There are several versions of snow fence that could be used so you could park beside and be sheltered and near your wood supply.
Nothing will be as good as getting parked inside the barn if that possible? I see there is a garage type door on one side, could that be "opened" up so you could drive a van or two inside? I understand just clearing the snow for access will be a huge job but I would just go for it as you don't know if 4ft of snow this week will be 8ft of snow next week.
Anyway just idea's, enjoy the video's keep up the great vlogs.:)

only problem with this video is that its not in 4k so the snow looks like snow in rdr2 up close, but normal for 1080p at a distance. you might not understand that but the the quality of the up close shots are bad in my opinion, but the distant shots are good. hopefully people don't presume that as negative in anyway, i just find if you do up close shots, do it in the highest resolution possible , because 4k at a distance doesn't matter all that much but up close is where you'd need it. good video over all though, no hate just suggestions that's all.

Okay so I'm only asking, are you doing a winter storm video in a van, on your own property with your house in the background? Or somebody else's house in the background? Well I guess it really doesn't matter if your home is only feet away, but it is a little bit more cool or when you're out and about without you are home or someone else's home to retreat to! But again I guess proving the point and making a video living in the van regardless so I'd rather your house is feet away or not isn't the point. I was just curious!

A couple of critiques, it is almost impossible to hear either one of you in the voice audio. The music is too loud over your voices. Second of all what is your story? We don’t understand why you were in Sweden and why you don’t live in the house it’s right next to your vans. Thanks

Greetings from the US. I'm a retired Police Officer, and even in Washington DC, the Nation's Capitol we get snow like that ever so often. I'm truly happy I don't have to work in it any more. When it snows now I look at it through the window, and go find something to eat in the kitchen. 😁 Please stay safe.

Originally from Western New York. When I was a wee one, my dad used to have to tunnel out the front door, the snow was so deep. We built igloos and snow caves after a big snowstorm. Loved it! We learned to embrace the snow and wear THERMAL clothing. We are in high desert now, and tho we get dustings of snow, I miss what you're experiencing. One word: Hygge!!!

But why they got through the window on the right side? There is no snow behind it.

We went though the window because the wind shields around the bottom were all packed in nicely and opening the door would have ruined it. Window easier option😊👍🏻

I remember the days in the 60s and 70s we used to keep the shovel inside the house just incase you had to dig your way out in the morning. In rural Aberdeenshire. Only the door opened inwards . Outward opening doors would be a bigger challenge?

    • @jfv65

All doors have to swing outwards now due to fire insurance restrictions I think? Unless we are talking about historically preservation objects
I live in Norway, I guess similar climate to Scotland -- in my childhood home we had access to the basement/ cellar from inside our house, and there we had nice dry wood for 1 week, propane oven, flashlite, snow shovel, candles, matches, and food for a few days --
We had use of this several times, either during heavy snow, or power-out, in my childhood powerout lasted 2 -3 days
