The first two albums are fantastic, really some killer stuff there, The Poison is like one of the best Metalcore albums ever, with tons of great riffs and SAF also is an awesome Metalcore album but with a lot of thrash influences, probably my favorite by them.
And I agree, I absolutely love dual harmonies and dual guitar work, Jesper and Bjorn (early In Flames) are probably my favorite duo is this aspect

@@euanharrison7125 I think the "loss of quality" should be moved after Fever. Sure, it wasn't as good as the albums that preceded it, but there's still some damn fine leadwork on that album. Plus, I still really enjoyed that album overall. Temper, Temper and after is where they lost their way. Though, Venom is a very guilty pleasure of mine.

@@richardsinclair7661 temper temper and gravity were their weakest albums but I can see why they are. They tried to make them more commercial/radio friendly or attract new fans. Not to say they were terrible but not albums you'd listen frequently although temper temper did have a few gems.

When you described the "punky quality with the metal"
Well Sir that's spot on with what metalcore is. Metalcore comes from metal being blended with the "hardcore" movement that was the production of a lot of punk bands. There's a channel with a documentary like video talking about this movement. Any who, hope that answers a bit your question on metalcore

Yes, this band is British. From Wales. BFMV is one of the few modern bands I can tolerate. Their guitar work, intensity, vocals, and songwriting skills keep me coming back. I, too, am a sucker for twin guitar harmonies and 2 things I love about this band is they mostly sing (vs. screaming/growling) and they not only sing but provide harmonic bgv's. This band is incredible. I actually love the "chugging on D" as you referred to it. Plus, I could listen to pinch harmonics all day. Btw, my intro to this band was Tears Don't Fall. I highly recommend it next. I also would recommend Theocracy - Laying The Demon To Rest.

These guys have been around for a while now. This is off of their 2nd album from 2008. As a old school metal fan myself, this song blatantly comes across as a "newer" metal band paying homage/tribute to classic Metallica to me. With maybe even hints of classic Maiden thrown in on the melodic guitar riffs. Which makes sense because those bands are 2 of their biggest influences. Even down to the "punk-ish" vocals, I hear James Hetfield circa Kill 'em All & Ride the Lightning. It's interesting how different ears hear different aspects in the sound.

5:20 that punk influence is actually rooted in hardCORE punk, hence the name metalcore. Still, BFMV always was on the more "old school"-metal side of metalcore, in contrast to scene bands like Asking Alexandria or BMTH. For a lot *core fans I know and me including, BFMV, As I Lay Dying, Trivium, and so on were an introduction into heavier music and I'm incredibly thankful for that. Funny thing is that BFMV have very very emo-ish songs too, which may be a reason they were interesting for teenagers.

I’d recommend Kirisute Gomen by Trivium. It is Metalcore but it has some thrash too. The song is from a Metalcore album that has some thrashy elements while also even some prog. Haven't listened to them in years but they were instrumental into getting me into the thrashy side of metal, this album especially! Also, I think the name has a lot to do with them being lumped in with the emo crowd. They have a few songs that veer a little in that direction like Tears Don't Fall but they're actually much more metal than I remember.

  • @BrodieCapel

You're not wrong, a lot of these bands (Trivium, Bullet for my Valentine etc.) Started more in the metalcore era and sound, and after an album or two evolved into a more modern interpretation of thrash with hint of Metalcore. A lot of people refer to this newer sound for these bands as "New Wave of American Metal" although I have always more associated bands like Lamb of God and Devil Driver. At the end of the day, sub genres are messy, its just cool heavy music in my eyes and it's all good.

Metalcore (literally "metallic hardcore" although nobody calls it that anymore) started in the mid 90s and essentially grew out of the New York hardcore sound which was a tougher, more macho version of the classic DC/LA hardcore sound. Integrity, Earth Crisis, Unbroken, Ringworm, and Zao are examples of first-wave metalcore. The metalcore that you and most other people are familiar with is melodic metalcore which was spearheaded by Shadows Fall and others at the tail end of the 90s.
Screamo is a more intense version of emocore that also developed in the 90s and has nothing to do with metal at all. In fact, I've heard people say that emocore actually developed in opposition to NY hardcore because they felt that style was too macho. The word "screamo" has been so misused in the past 20 years that many screamo fans now refer to the music as "skramz" instead. I'm not as familiar with screamo music but I think Saetia, Circle Takes the Square, Envy, City of Caterpillar, pageninetynine, and Touché Amoré are all considered screamo/skramz bands.

I think my big problem with all these sub-genres is that there is too much overlap. If this song was released in the 80’s, it probably would have been lumped in with power metal. But, you throw in a breakdown and a few guttural vocals and now you gotta create a new sub-genre. Lol
Thanks for the insight and thanks for watching!

    • @jettrainbow
      @jettrainbow 4 роки тому +4

@@OldHead Well, I don't even think it makes that much sense to call this song metalcore at all. There was hardly any hardcore in it and the one breakdown felt like a complete afterthought. I agree that it sounds much more like power metal or thrash. I don't know anything about this band but maybe their earlier stuff had more of a hardcore vibe to it. Anyway, thanks for reading my needlessly long comment!

    -Down from the Sky
    -Torn Between Scylla and Charybdis
-Shogun (is probs my favorite but it's long)

Hi, Marc from H Smiths Patreon here - good to see you in the zoom chat, love your content. Some cool facts given your love for acid reign and some links. Bullet are originally from the Bridgend, area in South Wales, where I live as does Cooky - both Cooky and Padge were gigging in bands (the early incarnation of bullet was called Jeff Killed John) around the same time before Bullet eventually took off. Cooky is still good friends with Padge (who did a quote for the age of entitlement) and Padge’s guitar tech is non other than Acid Reign original guitarist and dungaree wearing lunatic Kev Papworth (who also ended up living in Bridgend). I think Kev encouraged Cooky to post himself playing Godess up on the Acid Reign Facebook page, which ended up with him auditioning and joining the reboot.

Old head myself here. Before the lockdowns I was working with a early 20 something guy and we carpooled to work. He tends to listen to bands like Lamb of God and Meshuggah and one day he mentions he's a big Bullet For My Valentine fan. I had only heard one song by them called "Tears Don't Fall" which is their most radio friendly song, and it's fine for what it is but I'm not a fan. So I was like "...How? How can YOU be a fan of them?" Mentioned the one song I had heard that turned me off. He instantly understood and put this song on and it made me understand why people love this band. I wouldn't say I'm a fan, but I respect them a Hell of a lot more than I used to. It's interesting hearing all these bands that defined what Metal is to the generation that came after us and what it means to them.

metalcore changed around 2008 when posthardcore bands started adopting heavier breakdowns and metalcore bands stopped playing actual riffs and got higher pitched singers, and eventually around 2010-2012 became generic chug fests. Theres a revival of genuinely good metalcore going on but there aren't many good bands left. Also, the screamo you're referring to is normally called Post-Hardcore, which started off as regular hardcore but more melodic with bands like Fugazi and Rites Of Spring and eventually evolved into a more experimental genre til the end of 2010. Skramz is what actual screamo is referred to as and is an offshoot of emo, which was just hardcore, but with sad lyrics. eventually bands like Saetia and orchid started screaming and shrieking over almost grindy or mathy hardcore, and that became screamo/skramz. so post hardcore and skramz are offshoots of hardcore.

As many have stated gotta check out Trivium dude. Start with something off of their big 1st record Ascendancy. "A gunshot to the head" or the title track are probably strong picks. "Shogun" (2008) is simply an epic metal record, so many great tracks and their new record "What The Dead Men Say" also kicks some pretty major ass.
As for Bullet, I'd recommend checking out some of their older material before going forward in the discography. Their earlier stuff kind of as you stated is sometimes thrown in with the "screamo/emo scenes or genres if you want to call them that. In truth though some of their early work is their hardest hitting and as for the production/sound on their debut record, I still don't believe they've matched/topped it till this day. "No Control" or "Her Voice Resides" are 2 of the heavier ones.

Bought this back on vinyl at hot topic when it came out. I thought it was pretty good at the time. Typical 2008 metal, in flames etc. Never bought anymore of there stuff. I just listened to side A a couple weeks ago for the first time in about 5 years and it still is likable for me.
    Where has the time gone.

regarding the breakdown, this band is propably one of the biggest influenceson the chugging on d part being overdone today, it was hype when they did it 20 years ago

A younger band I really been digging is Power Trip. Their song Executioner's Tax is amazing. It's very thrashy
I also dig Municipal Waste/Iron Reagan. Crossover thrash that doesnt take itself very serious. MW album Born to Party is probably their best. The song Sadistic Magician is prob my favorite, along with Fuck the Neighbors.

Bullet For My Valentine are from Wales. List Metallica as one of their biggest influences. Line up changed since Scream Aim Fire was released. Bassist Jay James was replaced by Jamie Mathias and original drummer and co-founder Michael 'Moose' Thomas was replaced by Axewound drummer Jason Bowld. Bullet For My Valentine have much improved since. Listen to Bullet For My Valentine Gravity album, it's a beast 🤘

You should try listening to any song from bfmv's the poison album. Shit got it from start to finish. Sick ass screams, beautiful dual guitars, great percussion and great vocals all around. Or listen to waking the demon or bittersweet memories.
