"Spotlight" is a song by American singer Madonna from her first remix album You Can Dance (1987). It was released as a single in Japan on April 25, 1988 by Sire Records and Warner-Pioneer Japan. Initially rejected during her True Blue album recording sessions, the song was written by Madonna, Stephen Bray and Curtis Hudson who had presented the original to the singer. It was inspired by the song "Everybody Is a Star" (1970), by American rock band Sly and the Family Stone. The song was remixed by Shep Pettibone, with additional mixing done by John "Jellybean" Benitez.
"Spotlight" features instrumentation from drums, bass synths and handclaps, accompanied by vocal echos, a piano segment and violin phrases in the musical interlude. The lyrics talk about how one can be famous if one sings about it. The song received mixed reviews from critics. After its release, it reached number 68 on the Japanese Oricon weekly singles chart, as well as number three on its international singles chart. Although not released in the United States, the song managed to chart on Billboard's Airplay chart in early 1988. The song was used in a Mitsubishi VCR commercial, in which she appeared.
"over and over"..." spotlight" ...my drug when i was feeling low 👍
🔥🔥
this is always my jam, "Don't put off tomorrow what you can do today" and this is 10.5 for me
But then again "Life is just a party that's all you need to know"
Such an inspirational 🔥 line
@@LaurentChevassu 🔥🔥
The cousin of Into the groove and Lucky star! perfect description right there!!
😇🥰
This song is very underrated
Definitely!! It should’ve been included on the WTG tour.
You're definitely right, but you can dance has been published after the end of the tour, so noone had listened to It. And we have to consider that Causing a commotion .and the look of love had been included even if the soundtrack hadn't been published yet, so It was the First and only time that Madonna was singing on tour some unpublished tracks. I think that spotlight wasn't ready at that time.
🔥🔥
You Can dance was a big surprise to me. I was in the Walmart with my dad and as I perused the music section, getting ever closer to the letter M,, there was Madonna. I was shocked because I didn’t know that she had another album out but lo and behold it was a mix album. My dad got it for me anyway… I don’t have anymore but I will never forget that beautiful cover.
Such a cool story
You Can Dance started the remix album trend.. afterwards literally everyone started doing them..New Kids On The Block, Bobby Brown, Color Me Badd, Salt N Pepa, Paula Abdul (I still listen to hers all the time), there were so many..but Madonna was the first artist I heard of doing a full remix album..I was 11 when You Can Dance came out..
Dude!!!!! 🤪😆I was at the Walmart-getting closer to the letter M! Jesus I did that at 12 when this came out and did it last week at a record store and I’m 45! Hilarious!!!
Great tune. So instructional. It’s like Madonna sings the steps of how to be a star. I completely forgot the tinge of Latin influence towards the end. During this time she was making some side coin with this song and looks over in Japan and none of us state side fans knew about it. No internet then! Haha. For Mitsubishi! Comparing it to the holy grail of Into the Groove this cousin doesn’t cut it. Almost. I loved your reaction to this. So fun! I felt like I was at listening party.
😎😇always love it when you guys are having fun with me. And wait this wasn't released in the US?
@@EmpressReacts yea! So fun. Sorry. Meant that Mitsubishi commercial wasn’t released here that included the song. Someone here included a video link. Someone took all the Japanese commercials and clipped it together with the song.
I love Spotlight as about a 7 out of 10. I'd play it at an 80s retro party or a Madonna themed party as a fun surprise. It's the highlight for me of this release.
We're vibin 😎😝
I think if it were a big hit, it would not be a 10. But because it's such an obscure song in her catalogue, that gets it a 10. Killer synths, awesome bass (thank you Stephen Bray), and one of those great Madonna bridges. It sort of marries her 1986/87 sound to her earlier club sound, which makes sense because on the album version, it kicks off the album and segues directly into Holiday (you even hear Holiday's intro on the end of the Spotlight track), so it's like we start currently, and then kick back to 1983.
If you can get your hands on the liner notes for You Can Dance, it's a short essay written by a DJ or music critic (it's been years since I've seen it but I think his name was Brian Chin) about Madonna's history with dance, dancers and dance clubs, and it's such a love letter to her dance music.
Rumor has it this was recorded during the True Blue sessions, and then cut, which shocks me cuz this would have been better than some of the weaker songs on True Blue. Also keep in mind that through all of these remixes, Physical Attraction is just the same 1983 album version since it was already 6+ minutes long. But def listen to it as it segues out of the really cool Everybody remix into the original Physical Attraction.
Spotlight made me talk too much, as I knew it would! Great review!
So the "physical attraction" that's on the streaming versions of this album not a mistake? They really just through on the album version on purpose? 💀I honestly thought it was an error this whole time.
Great comment! I like your take on the song and the info about the sequencing of the albums track list. Makes perfect sense to start with Spotlight and transition to Holiday! Really clever actually.
@@duane_313 yeah the songs all flow/segue into each other as if it were a DJ set, so they do sound odd just listening to a single track at a time.
🤣🤣 it's cool. And from your fan POV I get why it's a 10 from you
80's post disco, funk, pop music is my all time favorite music genre which Madonna was so great at, so this song gets 10s from me.
Another Madonna-Gaga link I just noticed; a large part of their debuts was built around making their listeners feel like stars too.
Also, the fact that this album sold 1.5 million in the States without a hit while J.Lo’s remix album had 3 hits and still didn’t sell as much really is a testament to M’s star power at the time.
Wow interesting Gaga comparison 💯
Empress I see you getting it in👏💯. I loves me some Spotlight🔥🔥. This album is a continuous play album, the next track was being mixed in .
Yeah it's starting with some 🔥
Love Spotlight. Such an inspiring fun track. It was written for True Blue, I believe, but would have fit perfectly on the debut as you’ve stated. It does remind me of Into the Groove and Lucky Star, too, but I also think of Everybody when I hear it with its call to individiduality. Love that.
Yep‼We're vibin
This remixed album was released after the Who's that girl 1987 tour and was huge, very played on the radio stations and in the disco clubs, all the remixes are awesome
🔥🔥
"Don't stand in the corner, waitin' for the chance... make your own music, start your own dance!" :)
🔥🔥🔥
Madonna is the most remixed artist in history 😊
I remember when this song first came out, I tried my best to get into it...I wanted to love it, but the spotlight dimmed pretty quickly. I guess back then I was hungry for something that would knock my socks off and this felt a little too nostalgic and too reminiscent of her earlier work. Of course its a bop, but trust and believe the fire bops are right around the corner.🔥🔥
Okay, we're vibin 😎Not 10 status
Aww if you heard the version on the album right towards the end of Spotlight the synths of Holiday kick in as Spotlight is fading out... PURE 80S DISCO HEAVEN 🔥🔥🔥
I wouldn't give it a 10, but a 9.5.
FUN FACTS: Written by Madonna, Curtis Hudson and Stephen Bray for the True Blue album and remixed by Shep Pettibone (who would officially produce music for M during the early 90s) and additional mixing by Jellybean for You Can Dance album a year later.
It was inspired by the song "Everybody Is a Star" (1970), by American funk band Sly and the Family Stone.
The song was only released as a single in Japan and had no official video shoot. Madonna has also never performed the song live
Okay‼Shoutout to Mr. CURTIS🔥
Wow, Empress, you look absolutely stunning!
Thank u‼😇🥰
Empress was hooked when that first chime came in! ✨Apparently it is true that small facial expressions can tell how exactly how someone is feeling 🤔
Spotlight gives me life.. it has a Jellybean vibe to it- although I really don’t remember it.💡 Now it would probably be in my Top 10 Madonna songs.
One thing I did notice though is that Madonna did her own backing vocals. They were good but I sorta wish she had called up Gwen to help out.
Yaaas shoutout to Gwen and em 😇💯🔥😆
I got you can dance as a gift for my 13th birthday back in winter 2001. I had never heard of spotlight before then. It always reminds me of that morning putting it on and hearing for the first time while getting ready for school. Big love for the nostalgia
🔥🔥
The song has a nice 80's feel and it's a pretty cool song. Not one of her strongest songs but still good and I would like to see her perform it live sometimes.
We're vibin 😎
I never heard this cold-ending version! The album version blends into Holiday. As usual, your perception is fire: Spotlight can be described as a blend of Everybody is a Star / Everybody / Lucky Star / Into The Groove. feeling free at the dancefloor is a theme in Madonna's discography!
The 6 new remixes from You Can Dance were released as 3 promo 12" (Spotlight/Where's The Party, Holiday/Over and Over, Into the Groove/Everybody), that's where the standalone versions come from.
@@LaurentChevassu any REAL Madonna fans would know that.
@@PungiFungi any OLD Madonna fan would know that 😁
I ❤it
There are multiple versions of You Can Dance..there is the unmixed version where each track was separated, there is a single edit version where all the songs are radio length (3 or 4 minutes) and the CD and cassette versions had different dubs)..the cassette version had dubs for Spotlight, Holiday, Over and Over, and Into The Groove..the CD version had Holiday, Into The Groove and Where's The Party (which was only on the CD)..
And again one of those amazing bridges form that era.
But I have to admit I never realized how easily this could have been on the first album.
And yes, definitely 10s. I mean seriously.
Hnmm idk about 10 tho fam😂
10's across the board.
Her best song such a top, tune loved your moves!
It was produced by Steve Bray and Jellybean, that's why it's reminding you of her earlier music. It was also written with Curtis Hudson (the co-writer of "Holiday.") Originally recorded for _True Blue,_ but in their infinite wisdom, they decided to shelve it while allowing the masterpiece that is "Jimmy Jimmy" to make the final cut. I don't give it a 10, simply because I think it's too expanded and goes on for longer than it should, and because it's not especially memorable after it ends IMO...but it is enjoyable to hear, so overall I would give it a solid 8.
I agree with almost all you wrote, but I don't think that the length could have a negative effect on a dance track. It's made to dance and there are many remixes that lady ten minutes and more with the same notes and words, so I like it's length. More length more dance 😀
S/O to all of them🔥🔥🔥 and we're vibin🥰
This song is like a good representation of what you're doing here. 10 to me, but I'm a sucker for any kind of synth music.
Understandable if I hadn't heard the other 2 songs I mentioned prolly would have gave it 10
Express I wrote Spotlight right after Holiday became a hit. Madonna wanted more songs from me, so I took this song to her apartment in NY and played it for her. She fell in love instantly with the song. I gave her a cassette copy and thought it might be a followup to Holiday. But her label thought my original version of the song was too close to Holiday so they didn't put it on her next album. A few years pass and I get contacted by her lawyer saying that Madonna and Stephen Bray had reworked Spotlight and wanted my consent before they released (I guess to avoid legal issues since I wrote 100% of the original song). So it was placed on the You Can Dance album. Madonna and Stephen are great writers so they did a great job, but the original had a little more edge to it like the rhythm in Holiday. It's all good because Madonna is such a great artist to me. Very creative, talented and hands on with all her productions. A true artist. That's why she is Madonna. One of the smarted women I have ever worked with in the industry. I love you reactions to the music and artists.Awesome!
WOW! Thank you =0. Just so you know Curtis currently the first album is my fav because it slaps
I think I read somewhere that the royalties from Holiday is still paying your bills to this day!
@@PungiFungi Yes it does. Thankful.
It’s a 10 as a 80’s dance bop. But as a Madonna track it’s around a 7/8… 💚

Yes, Miss Empress! Do it! 10s across the board! Hahaaa...one of my favorite 80s Madonna songs. Spotlight is such a FEEL GOOD song. Blare "Spotlight" in your car while driving down the highway with your windows down. 😎
It's a bop, but is it 10s across the board worthy 🤔🤣
i had that album when I was 12! 🥰 good times!
🔥🔥🔥
I always liked Spotlight. It's on the obscure side of 80's Madonna, but it's a nice song. It reintroduces Open Your Heart-era Madonna to Holiday-era Madonna, which makes it interesting to hear.

Aw thanks! Promise we're getting there 🤣
Spotlight got so much airplay that it reached #32 on Billboard's Hot 100 Airplay chart. It could've easily been a top 10 or top 5 if it was released as a single. Where's The Party also got huge airplay where it reached #2 on Billboard's Hot 100 Bubbling Under Airplay chart. You Can Dance reached #14 on the Billboard 200, which at the time was the highest chart position for a remix album.
How Into The Groove did on the airplay chart?
@@PungiFungi Oddly Into The Groove didn't chart on The Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart but Angel reached #4. Into The Groove did reach #19 on Billboard's Hot Black Singles Airplay chart (now called Hot R&B & Hip-Hop Airplay charts).

Yes, this harkens back to the first album with a strong baseline and beat -- all of which balance out the lighter elements of the song. I had no idea this album exists! First time hearing this song. I give it an eight. : ) Thank you, Empress!
We're vibin 😎Glad we experienced it today
It’s like the “last” of her infused 80’s style songs... before the bona fide artist emerged. She had stuff to say! This is what separated her from all her contemporaries. Oh, and I give Spotlight a solid 7/10
We're vibin😎
I like Spotlight a lot. It's very "late 1987" if that makes any sense. It sounds different from the True Blue & Who's That Girl songs. It's more rhythmic and sort of hints at the more rhythmic pop Taylor Dayne/Rick Astley sound of 1988.
I wonder why nobody dropped a Patreon's request for Rick Astley yet 😅
Don't know those ppl but I agree with everything else you said
Actually, Donna Summer had four albums that were continuous mix on both sides and that was before 1980. She was probably the first artist to release continuous mixed tracks on her albums.
How did i not know this? Thanks for the education.
@@zanyzander She also released three double albums in a row which was a first as well
Wow. I really should check out some of Donna Summer's work to see how she influenced Madonna. For a long time I didn't even realize Future Lovers was based heavily on I Feel Love.
@@PungiFungi Donna Summer influenced many singers. She wrote or co-wrote most all of her songs. She was able to sing any genre of music. Definitely check here out. She and her producer are cincidered pioneerd of EDM, especially I Feel Love. Remember in the Live performance of Future lovers in the Confessions tour, she sings a little of I Feel Love during that song.
MacArthur Park Suite off the 1978 Live and More double album runs for almost 18 minutes. It starts off with MacArthur Park, transitions into One of a Kind, segues into Heaven Knows (featuring vocals from Bruce Sudano, Donna’s husband) and ends with a reprise of MacArthur Park. It is a magnificent masterpiece of continuous mix disco. Seamless and timeless, you would never know it ran for 18 minutes. The horns will literally blow you away. Many people (myself included) feel like they’ve experienced something spiritual after listening to it.

Official or fan made?
Written by the same people as Holiday. I reckon after you do each song individually then do the album as I reckon it was one of the first commercially released mixed albums. Give it 10 girl, it’s not even up for debate ❤️
A solid 10 tho?‼ S/O to Curtis Hudson and his family if they wrote it
@@EmpressReacts yes, Curtis co-wrote it. And upon reflection I think you gotta do the album as we heard it back in the day...listening to it beginning to end. We didn’t have the single edits way back when. So you’re not really experiencing You Can Dance as we all did. You have to remember a lot us kids had never heard a song being into another song before... so it was like ‘whaaaaat, woooow’, at least for me it was. Don’t forge the 10 🤩

I❤️ this song! Its simple and naive, But thats the charm of it. Offcourse the sound is dated But I dont care. The lyrics is so much Madonna:

It's a solid 7 or 8. For a new track addition to the album of previous releases, it really fits in well. Also Who's that Girl era was my introduction to Madonna, so I naturally heard all these "old" songs first on You Can Dance, so the album has a special place in my heart. The cousin doesn’t get a 10 from me. It’s so fun, and totally gives me classic 80s Madonna energy, but if we’re comparing it to indelible, forever bops like Into The Groove or Burning Up or Borderline... Well cuz, you can sit with us but you gotta wait your turn. Love M for her passion for bringing all her fans along for the ride in her lyrics. To me her stuff has this compelling split between her solitary journey and her urge to elevate everyone to their best. And that line “everybody is a star” reveals a bit of her long time love of Sly And The Family Stone... a reference that will become relevant on one track from Like A Prayer 🤫

Ha … I was like nooo, nooo …. Don’t do it! When you were tryna decide if it was 10’s Across the Board. 🤣 it’s cute …. But not at the ‘Into the Groove’ or ‘Crazy for You’ level. It was fun when it came out …something new from her at the time …. But ultimately was over after it was over.

You Can Dance started a remix album trend....record producers realize fans will buy remix albums in which the only work required to do was to pay the remixers and design the album packaging. Paula Abdul takes the cake when her follow up to her debut album was not an album of new material but a remix album...and the crime is I believe most of the remixes on the album were already released on 12" singles, so it was really a compilation rather than new material.
Did it flop for Paula?
@@EmpressReacts it was a hit. In fact, that is the only Paula Abdul album I have!
I've seen this song used at a couple weddings by the DJ, including the first dance. It really shows off M's voice pre-Evita, and its much closer to her raw voice without the additional 'processing' used on Into the Groove for example. A fan crafted a video for Spotlight out of TV commercials Madonna did for Mitsubishi: ua-cam.com/video/LQ2Op2CNuEQ/v-deo.html For PWL-style remix that actually improves on the original (Sakgra extended mix): ua-cam.com/video/H44ifeP7hZc/v-deo.html
I think I've always kind of slept on this song. It's definitely a bop. Like the WTG songs, it's a repeat of things she'd done before, which was rare for her. I agree that it's similar to "Into the Groove" and "Lucky Star" but I would also throw in "Holiday" (which was co-written by Curtis Hudson, who co-wrote this song as well - I think it was a demo that M and Stephen Bray turned into something different/better).
And don't forget that Spotlight was remixed for You Can Dance by none other than Jellybean, which definitely makes it Holiday's cousin (as Empress would say).
I can find more Holiday too than Lucky star in Spotlight Indeed 😁

Hi dear Empress,
This Is a 9 to me. It came when here in Italy you could see the Turin concert in every TV shop and Madonna was everywhere, so I think that every song from her would have been a great hit. But spotlight was a really good dance song to me. Anyway into the groove Is a 12 to me and lucky star was just a 7. I didn't love too much the Melody and her voice there. Too high maybe. 🤣🤣🤣love the timeline
I'm not sure how you are going to do a reaction to individual songs on this album because they are all mixed together. And it really does need to be heard like that. Its a club album/dance party album. So your reaction might have to be a part one (the first 4 songs are run together -At least on spotify) spotlight/holiday/everybody/physical attraction. And then a part 2 with the "other side" of the tape/LP): over and over/into the groove/where's the party. There are also separate stand alone "dub" remixes at the end of each album (spotlight, holiday, into the groove, where's the party, over and over). Each format cd/tape/LP had different dub mixes.
Interesting ‼

Good song but it doesn't feel fully baked to me. it's nicely done but it's missing SOMETHING. Some Madonna "ingriedient" either isn't there or isn't fully exercised. Plus it was soooo shuffled around in the whirlwind that was Madonna in 1987 that it never got to have it's own identity and is ultimately lost in her catalog, even more than Angel and Gambler.
We're vibin
I love this song. It's fun. Its inspirational! But I don't think it deserve 10 y'all. I gotta be objective with these ratings lol
Big facts💯We're vibin 😎
No 10s from me, sorry. I do still enjoy the sort of naïve positive message, and the overall melody is good, but the 80s cheese arrangement and her delivery of the word 'Spot-lie-eeet' I find pretty grating after a while. Yup, I'm still saying 'Justice' for Open Your Heart, which is a far, far superior song. lol. I even prefer Who's That Girl and Causing a Commotion. But, hey, what I really enjoy is someone discovering her music at a totally different age and time and having a different perspective and opinion, while also being super insightful.
Not sure if you've heard of Edward Russell, but he has an amazing podcast on Madonna's music called 'Inside the Groove' and he breaks down the history and origins of the songwriting, and isolates the various tracks laid down and layered to make the song (bass, percussion, guitar, keyboard, horns, strings, synths, and vocals). It's super insightful and gives great insight onto how Madonna and various producers she's collaborated with crafts music. Highly recommend it to you and your subscribers.
Yeah, you right. Like, if Open Your Heart not getting 10s ain't no way Spotlight deserves it lol. I personally do listen to this song more than open your heart. But I agree, OYH is definitely the superior song.
Hi Duane, if you consider Just Madonna production, you're right. But if you consider all the 10s that Empress Is giving to all the other artist, well It should get a 10 too. Don't you agree? 😁

I only give 10s. This is cool , but it's not a 🔥 bop
It's a 4 for me. Lol Never really liked spotlight. It seems like a throwaway b-side with leftover Who's That Girl sound effects. It isn't Madonna's worst song, but if anything, compromise between a 4 and a 9, which would be an 6.5. Lol
🤣we're vibin
Not feeling this one. The Who’s that girl era and you can dance album never did it for me. 80s remixes have nothing on late 90s/00s mixes. Its 5/10. I literally prefer almost every Madonna non single from Like a Prayer to the present over this track
Interesting ‼
