- Slow pitch jigging and bottom fishing in Onslow Bay, North Carolina.
We fish out of New River inlet in our 24 foot bay boat and hope you enjoy our adventures with us! Drop a comment if you want to know about any of the gear or methods we use. Tight lines!
Great video! What size of slow jigs do you mostly use? I am trying to pick up some from bass pro for a headboat trip off the Morehead. Also, it seems when you reel in the fish, you didn’t have to guide the line to lay evenly on the spool? (I am totally new to non level wind) thank you!!
For Onslow Bay, I range from 30 g up to 190 g depending on target species, drift speed, depth, etc. With a head boat, you will be anchored, probably anywhere from 80 to 130 feet, so I’d pick up a couple small profiles in the 60-80g range, and then some in the 120-130 g range. The Torpedo Johnny Jigs in Guava and Watermelon color do really well for big sea bass, flounder, snappers, etc. In regards to level wind, I’m fishing under 80 feet, so I’m not too worried about how it spools back onto the reel. If I was reeling in a few hundred yards out from a fish running a trolling spread, I'd feed it into the reel better. But yeah, id snag a couple smaller 80g profiles in orange and high flutter, and then 120-130g with torpedo shaped in Guava colors and that should catch you sea bass, vermillion, and triggers. The best part is the other people will put plenty of scent in the water, but your jig will likely attract the bigger fish. Good luck! I usually use Capt. Stacy up there and have a good time.
@@TopsailFishingthank you so much for your recommendations!
Great video . I have a Robalo R222 at Marsh Creek Marina in Sneads Ferry and fish out of the New River inlet also. I’m always looking for fishing friends to go out with. Hit me up if you’d like to fish together.
Will do! Need to get a run out past Cripple Rock one of these calm days (if we ever get one again, it seems).
How deep and what temp is the water
We varied from anywhere to 55 feet out to about 110 feet. About this time of year, I want to be in at least 58 degree water but we were fishing 62 degrees at one point in this video, too. Hopefully the bigger bonito move in here soon, some smaller ones being picked off in the 12 mile range now.
