Bravo Marty; you have single handedly reinforced the thinking of guys all over the world who have sheds full of broken machines to keep everything forever in the offchance that the stuff can be used for parts someday !
Mate, I am starting to watch your videos kind of like a Pixar movie. All these sad items get dragged home by their hair only to learn they live in a mechanics fantasy world were everything starts on the first pull and is used for the job for which it was created. Everybody gets fixed, loved and fed good oil. Fantastic.
No kidding. "This old girl just needs a highly specialized whatsit changed out, but I'm sure there's one laying around here somewhere. I think I left it by that hog slicer from the '50s, or maybe that old '40s tractor my grandfather used."
I was going to say the same thing though it applies to 4 strokes as well. setting the air gap between the coil and the flywheel is important, too much or too little and they won't spark right or at all. It would have been a good idea to check the plug terminal to the high tension lead as well, they can be hard to pop off the plug at times and some people yank at them braking the connection between the copper wire in the ht lead to the plug terminal.
Marty's Wrench and Hammer Class is now is session! Listen up guys, here's what we're gonna do to day... Thanks for taking the time to make these videos Marty. I'm not a professional mechanic, but there so many things I've learned from watching you. Now if you could just teach us how to figure out wives...!
That right there is why I keep so much old junk around for spare parts! I know "normal" people think I am a hoarder, but I call it being smart and frugal! 😉😉😉
Brilliant a bit of tinker time on a freebie and now you have an extra saw. I service my chainsaws each spring regardless of how much use they have had and they never let me down.
Another job done well. Hanging onto old junk has saved me many times. I thought on most of these small engines that the switch grounded the spark to stop them, I was expecting you to untwist the switch wires and have spark back. Thanks for sharing and entertaining.
This is why we never throw stuff away eh Marty, you never know when you may need a part. When I was working on chainsaws a long time ago there was a small saw called a Quadra, that saw was sold under many names and colours, Remington, Pioneer,Skil, Partner, probably more I cant remember. They were pretty rough no rubber mounts.
That saw looks like a one of them very rare one of a kind $6000.00 chainsaw, but it's probably has lot more sentimental value to you and it's the only saw you have. Good fix, I like seeing stuff not thrown away........
You are extraordinary, although I would venture to say, living in a generation too late. In this age of throw away when not working, you have a flair to fix and make good again just like your and my ancestors. I am most envious of your range of MEP+ skills. Thank you for insightful videos.
Every time I use a part that I've saved off of a junker, it feels like I won the lottery. The satisfaction of actually having the foresight to save that part is far greater than the actual amount of money saved.
I had the UK version of this saw, mine caught fire 🔥 The fuel tank bung went hard due to the ethanol in our fuel, it leaked fuel & then caught fire when starting, fun times 😂 My first observation was the kill switch is normally open on these, so wires connected means grounded coil = no spark. I shall keep watching though 😊
Love your videos Marty. I always learn something new. My x-wife would ask "why do you keep things that are broken?".....This is why! Just picked up a 5 hp wood chipper for $30. I have an 8 HP engine from a snowblower with a blown auger. It matches all the shaft specs. Should be a nice happy homeowner machine when done.
Once again Marty is given something a majority of people would throw in the trash heap. Pulls out some parts from his hord stash and gets it running again. Nice little episode to watch just before I go to bed.
My step-father was once given a Makita drill. As it was handed over, the guy simply said 'effing thing won't spin.' SF looked at it, pushed the direction trigger from center-off to forward, and pulled the trigger. Bloke who had handed it over wanted it back, but SF said 'no way, you gave it to me' 😂
Throwing this thing out due to a janky coil reminds me of the amount of lawnmowers my brother would find at the tip that just needed new blades. It's surprising that we put so much emphasis on companies to reduce their planned obsolescence but sometimes all a thing needs is a turn of a scew, really.
Hello Marty, when or if the shit hits the fan. You & your awesome family will survive. You have some amazing mechanical skills. That why i really like your family & when you work on different machines. Keep up the great work you do and stay safe.
Perfect! Nothing wrong with "cheap" saws .. they are great when you don't want to use a good saw .. in a muddy swamp, around gravel and rocks, salt water, etc.. Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
Usually when the switch is in the run position there is no continuity and when you switch the saw off the switch makes continuity grounding the coil. I wonder if it would have started if you untwisted the wires? Either way you got a nice saw.
Yeah, we are in times now when everything is just thrown away when it breaks. When I did my apprenticeship we would at least have a go at trying to repair something. Great work Marty 😊
Good job Marty, always nice when you can fix different things! Kirk from Louisiana, USA sending prayers and positive vibes to you and your family! Stay safe my friends from down under! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸✌🏻✌🏻🙋🏼🙋🏼🙋🏼
I have a 1997 Husky XP41 ( bought new) that the coil just failed on, bought a coil off Amazon for 20 bucks and Shes back running great again. Saws are pretty easy to fix if you have a decent mechanical skill set
Nice one, Marty! You're up there with Mustie1 for chill repair videos. No fuss, no drama, just calm progression on a problem. Please keep doing what you're doing!
Well done, yes a simple fix for "Marty T" but if the donor had taken it to a shop, it would cost more to fix than buy a new one. I love that you had a similar saw that had blown up still kicking around for parts. I've got one of those cheap Chinese saws, I'm a Husky guy myself, and I have some great saws, but a job came up and both of my good Husky saws were down waiting for parts, I bought one of these cheap saws, that was about 5 years ago, and it has done a lot of work, and keeps on working. I only run storebought premixed gas in it which has ZERO ethanol in it, and I do take care of it, but I have cut a lot of wood with it, including doing some milling which is hard on any saw, but it still just keeps working. Not a replacement for my Husky saws, but for about $200 US (five years ago) it has been a solid performer. Cheers from Tokyo!
I got a long reach chainsaw of someone it's was in a bad way spent some time on cleaning it up it needed a new pull starter which cost £6 pounds fixed it got it started .sold it for £80 pounds great feeling now am always looking out for small engine's love fixing them great video 📹 👍
Neighbor gave me a 1996 John Deere STX 38 garden tractor mower. Had not run for years. Wife said, "What you going to do with that? I said, "I am going to do a Marty T on the old beast! After my coffee I am going out to mow, it runs like a champ.
For those interested , more common are carb issues, including old fuel - Run (enough to fill carburetor) and leave Stihl fuel (high Paraffin) or likes before storage/periods longer than 6mths and only use ethanol free between.
Oregonian here. Impressed to see our bars have made it all over the world! I new they were common round here, but new Zealand?? Would have never thought. Thanks for the great content Marty. Cheers!
😂 hahaha great stuff my friend! My garage is chuck full of stuff with a "one day" ticket on them! 👍 Hope you and the family have a blessed Easter! May God continue to bless you all! ✝️🇺🇸🙏
These saws are ok for what they are, a bit fiddly to fix but go ok. The places to watch out for are the starter pawls, the stop switch, and the fuel lines, put a decent ngk spark plug in it, I give them a muffler mod and increase the compression and they go ok after that.
Nice job, the worst is when some idiot tries to run the saw with the brake on, the plastic destruction makes it impossible to repair within reason, even if it is a Stihl!
Got an old Popular Super 25 CounterVibe that came with my house . The seller had found it in a shed at a house he owned prior to this and just kept it , and had never done anything with it , and just left it for me . Of course the fuel line was so rotted , only a few sticky pieces remained . I cleaned it up , replaced the fuel.line , and , soon discovered the coil was dead . And that's where the story stops because the coils are completely out of production and have been for so long , the last ones made can now legally drink . They were great little saws , real screamers . The coils and fuel line were their only weak points . To bad it's just a wall hanger now ..
Another fine job Marty. You are a wonderful advocate for recycling and upcycling. I trust on the odd occasion when you do scrap a piece of equipment, you break it down and recycle the materials. You are a good role model👍
To set the coil gap I leave the bolts a little loose then put a business card over the flywheel magnets and the coil will move to about the right place, then tighten the bolts. When adjusting the chain tension i lift the end of the bar up.

regardless of the name on the recoil that saw is most likely a second from the factory in asia that makes husqvarna add the Oregon bar, a first class mechanic, and voila! top line saw.
About that broken bit: I'd have it perfectly cleaned and then glued on with UHU 300 Endfest epoxy, that thing is 300kg per square cm, so it should do the job. Eventually putting a flat nut on the other side.
Great to see you back mate and thanks for sharing your experience with us all keep up the good work and hope you and your family and friends are doing well god bless you all.
I love fixing that old stuff. My 2 Husky Mowers, my craftsman brush whacker, my Husky saw… saves so much money and keeps it out of the landfill. Love the channel Marty! Blessings from Oregon!

I'm one of those kind...many times over the years I've found something I needed in my junk collection..lol

From memory, isn't Marty a former career forestry guy? Of course he'd have a spare coil lying about - hahahahhahahaha!

I don’t think Marty has ever seen a machine that is beyond repairable. Gives me inspiration to take on machines that been thrown away by their owners.
well, except for those that become parts donors.... like the Blue chainsaw. But even then part of that lived again!
