- On April 29, 2023, Metropolitan Hilarion of Budapest and Hungary met with Pope Francis of Rome, who was on a pastoral visit to Hungary.
The meeting took place at the Apostolic Nunciature and was also attended by Archbishop Michael Banach, the Apostolic Nuncio to Hungary.
During the conversation, Metropolitan Hilarion told the Pontiff about the life of the Moscow Patriarchate's Hungarian diocese, its social and educational activities, as well as its interaction with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest and other Christian denominations.
As a memento of the meeting, Metropolitan Hilarion presented Pope Francis with four volumes of his six-volume monograph "Jesus Christ: His Life and Teaching", translated into Italian.

If You look at the sociological statistics of Hungary and compare it with the legislatively most liberal states of the EU (for example Finland), You will see that in Hungary You have for example almost twice as much abortion. (Hungary about 280 abortion per 1000 births, Finland 180 and Russia has still clearly over 1000 abortion per 1000 births). And that is only the "Godly principle" of You will not kill. Kyr Hilarion seems much happier and more comfortable now that he is in Budapest, and not in Moscow, where his position as Chairman for External Affairs was becoming increasingly untenable. Perhaps now he will be free to address spiritual and theological issues in the manner that made him one of the most prominent Orthodox theologians of our generation.

I went to Budapest on Boxing day 2019 for a long weekend with my wife and daughter. What a beautiful city. A literal winter wonderland at that time of year which unbeknown to us that it would be our last destination abroad from the UK for nearly 3 years. Men, if you want to impress your lady for a long weekend over Christmas break as a little surprise. Budapest is a fine destination to make that happen. 👌

@@khalilfajloun3787, Orthodox believe that Catholics are heretics, beacause of 1) they have changed the Creed and added to it that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Son too, not only from the Father ("filioque"). 2) they reject the principle of the conciliarity and valorize the Bishop of Rome above others. 3) they are schismatics and has dissented from the Ortodox Church. In view of these reasons, according to the Orthodox dogma, all Catholics go to hell without variant. (But in the Otrodox church is a "modernist" wing, that has a softer position. Something like the "Branch theory". For example they include Metropolitan Hilarion)
Position of Catholics is softer. They believe that the Orthodox lack unity with the Pope, but despite this they consider the Orthodox Church with reservations, but still is a part of the Church

The Vatican split away from Orthodoxy when St-Albert and St-Thomas used pagan philosopher, Aristotle's approach to deconstructing and explaining all our mysteries. Unlike the Catholic church the Theotokos is part of the Liturgy and is central to the faith, community of saints, in pointing us towards Christ. With the dawn of Aquinas he paved the road to pushing her aside. The Protestants took that even further. She is the Christokos to them and nothing more. Orthodoxy doesn't argue or explain the mysteries that was a mistake that LED to the Reformation. You might want to find out more with an open heart. I did and it blew my mind.

You do know that when Rome fell into utter chaos things were moved to Constantinople? There was no 'St-peter's authority' over the other Patriarchs for over 1000 years! That notion of authority over the others was the work of Satan to seal division. And it will never unify the 'universal catholic church'. The Western Catholic Church split when it became obsessed with reason/knowledge and dissecting all our mysteries to fit in nice arguments to counter Muslims, Jews and Gnostics. (That's also why the Pope changed the Creed without an Eucumenical Council.)Read St-Gregory of Palamas. The Catholic Church would have fallen in the 16th century Europe were it not for St-Ignatius reviving exactly what St-Gregory of Palamas taught. Yet the Spanish Inquisition persecuted him , brought him forward numerous times because he was like St-Gregory of Palamas and forced St-ignatius to adopt 'reason' and knowledge (forcing him to go to University of Paris) and then set up schools throughout the world. @@rebn8346
I applaud the efforts of Hungarians and their government to clearly pronounce the Christian roots of their nation, and to proclaim many important Christian values (including the humanity of the person from the moment of conception) in their Constitution and other statues. However, contrary to the statement of archbishop Hilaron, Hungary is not the only European state that does so. Moreover, despite the pronouncement of such values, current Hungarian laws defy them in many respects. For instance, abortion on demand is allowed an widespread, and the result of this situation is clearly reflected in the Hungarian statistics on demographics.

These meetings are terrifying for the one Holy Apostolic Orthodox Church, the bride of Christ is going to only be diluted by this ecumenism. You either are in the body of Christ or you are not, there is no middle ground. Someone will have to compromise/update their faith in order to join those that are in Christ and those who are not in Christ. This is how you get a one world religion. As a former Eastern Orthodox, who has now been fully received into the Catholic Church, I just want to say that these meetings between our two Churches brings nothing but joy to me. Every meeting between our two Churches brings us one step closer to reunion. As the patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew I has said himself "Reunions is inevitable".

I respect Metropolitan Hilarion for his balanced views and approach with regard to the current state of the world, where for him , peace and intelligent discussion and concord must be the way between nations to solve problems that claim a Christian pedigree extending over a thousand years or more. What is attractive is that he sees the actual practice of Christian actions as determining the possibility of such concord. To prove this point, he very rightfully points to the brave Hungarian people, who wish to pursue their past and its Christian underpinnings that lead them as a people to respect and apply legally the protection of life from conception to natural death. There is also the ancient Hebraic respect for marriage and human sexual purity and for family life . This realization in a majority Roman Catholic country has enabled the various Orthodox communities there to live in concord according to his remarks and understanding. I think he has made a point worthy of reflection.
The Council of Florence was valid Ecumenical Council, where the entire Dreek delegation including the Byzantine emperor signed the Bull of Union; All doctrinal issues were satisfactorily settled; Only one Bishop would not sign - Mark of Epehesus. A valid Ecuenical Council is assembled in the Holy Spirit and its decrees are binding with Divine Authority..

You need to read the authentic historical account of the conference in Florence. St. Mark of Ephesus proved that ' God plus one is a Majority!" When Pope Eugene heard that St. Mark of Ephesus did not sign the heretical document, he exclaimed: "Then we have accomplished nothing!" Also, when the 103 Bishops (including of course St. Mark of Ephesus) returned to Constantinople, the people met them at the harbor and told them to go back to Rome. One hundred of the Bishops repented, for having signed that false union. Only two returned top be come cardinals in Rome.

The idea of dialogue with the Catholics is quite unpopular in Russia. Hilarion himself told that there can be no reunification of our churches. And lots of people do not understand what and why to discuss.

Honestly, W, although Orthodoxy should not seek unity with papists, we should have a diplomatic reach.
The Orthodox should not seek unity at all with a Catholicism since Catholicism has been very evil against children in and nuns for hundreds of years. Nuns are abused by fathers in the priest in the Catholic Church you cannot when there has been abuse the Catholic people need to come to the Orthodox and ask for forgiveness for leaving the Orthodox Church. The Orthodox Church should not be running to the Catholicism in stop seeking direction from the Catholic Church.

23 Eastern Orthodox rites have returned to Rome and are now in full communion as the Eastern Catholic Church. Just waiting on the remaining 15 to return to Rome.
We should include the Anathemas during the Sunday of Orthodoxy.

For one thing I admire the Catholics: no country,no matter how big or important is,has ever challenged the throne of Pope. Contrary,the Protestants have been divided in many denominations and churches,they have lost the contact with the real church. I see that now,the Orthodox churches are following the path of the Protestants,even with some centuries delay,with first protester the Russian church,it will have the same sad ending,like Luther's fight against Vatican.
Hope this Eastern Church reunites with its home Church in Rome, is my prayer.
