I drafted and sewed together the classic Little Black Dress as worn by Audrey Hepburn (and designed by Givenchy and Edith Head) from the 1961 movie Breakfast at Tiffany's. First, I talk about the history of this particular movie costume, and all the different people who worked on it, and why the skirt looks the way it does. I also talk about where the three different versions of this dress exist today.
I then make the dress. To do this, I used the draping method to make the pattern, use black silk satin to sew it up, and then use 1960s zipper techniques to put in a couture zipper. Then I discuss 1950s/1960s underwear, and there is a get ready with me (GRWM) for this gown.

I just love how you're a doctor and in your free time you make deliciously elaborate costumes. Such a vibe.
Thank you!!
I love this too!
@@ibosquez5238 yes. I am not sure in what capacity. Perhaps surgery? (Random guess.)
@@catherinejustcatherine1778
Wow she's a superhero, doctor, mom, seamstress, just wow. Needs a cape like Wonder Woman.
@@ibosquez5238 she does. Now seeing wonder woman, but make it Rococo...
I m a french woman living with a german partner in a spanish speaking country where everyone either pronounces or writes our names wrong on a daily basis. And who cares seriously ...
This woman is a working mom who saves people s lives on a daily basis and finds the time to create beautiful dresses. Sewstine, you are pretty awesome.
Thank you so much Julie! That means the world to me.
@@Sewstine No I’m the one thanking you for advocating for the covid vaccine and having chosen to dedicate most of your life to heal and save ours.
Thank you and thank your colleagues at the hospital. All of you guys deserve Jeff Bezos’ bank account 👍
@@julie977 Agreed! Real heroes deserve respect, not racist rhetoric! Everything about this video is epic and anyone who thinks they're being smart or cute by being nasty need a wakeup call: Christine is still fighting the good fight everyday for countless patients and still makes time to be part of a diverse community of makers, all on top of being a Mom, AND being an example for a young generation of creators to enter the historical dress space that's been so tightly held by white scholars.
For people to act like this the day before International Women's Day is really a reminder that we still have a lot of work to do in driving intersectionality in feminism.
I think your baby boy stole the show when he crammed the whole pastry in his mouth and toddled on! Oh my goodness! Loved it
Agreed!
He is so adorable and your hubby is a knockout!!!
"If you want me to make Anastasia's dress sooner...."
SMASHES THE PAUSE BUTTON
Yes, please!
Please make an Audrey Hepburn series! That would be fantastic!
Oh absolutely!
"Wouldn't it be loverly"?!
I am so in favor of a series where you make Audrey costumes! You should even be able to find vintage sewing patterns for a lot of them since they were put out for home sewists at the time, if you wanted to go that route. Can't wait to see what's next, you always have such lovely projects!
PLEASE PLEASE MAKE THE ANASTASIA DRESS BIG FAN WOULD LOVE TO SEE REAL LIFE DRESS. BIG FAN OF YOUR WORK
Yes, please 😭😭😭
I think I have to now! Thank you for the encouragement!
@@Sewstine if not the black dress, perhaps the golden one from the opera? Or the kokoshnic-looking one from the ball when she's a kid?
me notyou42 I love the navy blue Russian Ballet dress and the Russian court dress she wears with her kokoshnik tiara.
Yes to the blue dress! Also the designer for Anastasia the musical did her own version of the blue dress which might be worth checking out (although that one has a lot of beading and embellishment)
The easiest way to signal that your black dress is not mourning garb is to pair it with shiny and/or brightly coloured accessories, such as the pearls and diamonds used in the movie.
Bold of you to assume I wouldn’t roll up to any given funeral with the ritz fully on
Bold of some people to assume I wont arrive at the funeral dressed in a black beaded gown and a white mink stole.
@@alaskacosplay
Jet beads are appropriate for mourning, while the mink stole says you’re not actually mourning the deceased.
Nothing like breakfast with Sewstine
😂😂😂 with my pastry getting stolen.
The way he just shoves that whole cupcake piece in his mouth is a MOOD and now I'm felling it
I've always thought the fact that the skirt is basically a rectangle with very little shaping was such an interesting choice. I didn't know all that history behind it!
Your little one stealing the cupcake has me cackling!
I have made a couple of Audrey Hepburn’s dresses (the first little black long dress and the dress that is paired with the black hat and alligator shoes) and I intend to make the iconic black dress again but with an addition of some short sleeves since I have a bit of a concern about my arms but I have worn the dress without sleeves and I think I might do that again to be very accurate to the film. Also please make the Anastasia “Russian Ballet” dress. Its so iconic and very elegant yet simplistic.
Thank you! And yes!! You’re right! It was the ballet not the opera.
oh my gosh, PLEASE make the Anastasia dress asap.
Back in Sept 2019 (feels like a lifetime ago) I went to a ball and when I was looking for gowns that one was the one the top spot for inspirations what I wanted!
Yes!! If I could have had any dress in the world for prom, I would have wanted that one.
@@Sewstine me too! I actually wore a dark purple stretch velvet column dress with long white gloves to my prom (circa 2000) because I aspired to that moment in Anastasia. Honestly, I still do and still dream of recreating that dress!
So, so gorgeous!! And such a dashing cupcake thief. 😁
Haha thank you!
Interesting fact: The other LBD Givenchy created for Sabrina, that you showed, was the inspiration for Midge Maisel's LBD she wore in her final stand up act in season 1.
"I made made mine slightly shorter for my own sanity" 😂😂😂 #relatable
It would be simply fabulous to see you go to Tiffany's in that dress. 💃
I seriously plan on it! And try to buy a sterling silver telephone dialed.
Very coronaproof, a telephone dialer! 😄
@@Sewstine Would anyone nowadays understand how to use that silver telephone dialer? In the days of rotary dial phones people often used a pencil or pen (from the notepad that was often next to the phone) to dial so they wouldn't break a nail. Senior citizen here, speaking from experience!
@@calicoquilter4472 perhaps she could attach a stylus tip on it so she could use it for a cell phone? Tiffany’s may already have such a thing
This came out so beautiful, and you make the process look so easy (haha, I know it's not). An Audrey Hepburn outfits series would be awesome!
I'd love a series on Audrey outfits!
I really love seeing big budget projects. It's like driving through wealthy neighbourhoods to ogle the mansions, lol. Not to covet them, just to appreciate the beauty in opulence.
Hahaha thank you so much!!
Natalie: Oh my goodness you said exactly what I was feeling as well, but couldn’t figure out how to express it. Thanks for that.
Love love love the little fashion history breakdown in the beginning.
Thank you!!
That sabrina dress would be amazing. Love this so much!
Okay.... but HOW do you have time for all this? Seriously, can we get a motivation/life planning/“what my week looks like” video so we can learn how you accomplish all in your life?
I get stress hives just thinking about it !
I think Breakfast at Sewstine's is my favorite movie.
Stunning as always. Really enjoyed the extra touch of movie memorabilia. Yes, I would love to see you remake the B&W embroidered "Tennis Court" gown Audrey Hepburn wore in Sabrina.
Yes!! Thank you!!
That was some impressive cupcake devouring XD
A Hepburn series?! Oh yess please
That first clip tho. QUEEN.
Gurl, I’m feeling the vibes you are seriously laying down! Get on that Golightly life! I’m not a fan of the movie but it’s not about me. You look great!
Thank you!!
And that little boy of yours stealing your limelight 👍🏽
The moment you put the sunglasses on you went from ‘princess’ to ‘elegantly hungover’ and I love it
You're a braver woman than I am to let a toddler with pastries around your gorgeous black dress
And eating a cupcake (with icing! 🧁) with $378 dollar gloves on !
@@m.maclellan7147 Exactly!
“I might mine slightly shorter... for my own sanity!” 😂😂😂
Also.. leave it to a toddler to devour a half-cupcake in one bite! 😂
I wait so long for someone to make Anastacia's dress. please do it !!!!!!!
❤️❤️❤️
My grandma had super long nails, and she used a dialer to be able to use that old style telephones, she kept those phones until the late 90s, and the dialer.
Huh. It's always interesting to see other people's drafting methods. I always start on paper, then do a rough cotton mock up and make adjustments on the mock up before going to the proper fabric.
Pattern _drafting_ (the basis of most tailoring) frequently starts on paper, while pattern _draping_ (used in a lot of dressmaking from the late 17th century onwards) is done using fabric since paper doesn’t drape the same way as fabric does.
Shoot, one of the other (many) costubers did a video on that very thing....the difference between a tailor and a Mantua maker....pretty sure it was Abby Cox ????
@@ragnkja That makes a lot of sense! I'm fairly new to making clothes so I've mostly been branching out from paper patterns I'd already used successfully.
@@m.maclellan7147 I'll have a look for it, thank you :)
Please recreate the Anastasia Opera dress! This was the dress of my dreams growing up
Yes!!! I think I must!
Also love the red “funny face” dress! That would look amazing on you too!
You're the first youtuber i've ever heard even mention how much a sponsorship can buy! So interesting!
"I'm ready to go around not naming cats and avoiding commitment." *baby walks by*😂
The opening scene dress is,what would be called, a dinner dress, the little black dress is the one she wears to Sing Sing and throughout the movie in various incarnations .
This is ICONIC. I am completely in favor of an Audrey Hepburn dress series 🤩
Amazing as usual; I love seeing all your work and on top of that you have a demanding, important and vital job. Don’t understand why people would pick at a pronunciation. Thanks for your videos and inspiration; may you keep having joy, happiness and creativity in your life (and lots and lots of beautiful outfits and fabric)
Yes!! This looks gorgeous 💘😍
Also for the Anastasia dress you could always do the Broadway version for something a little different
I actually prefer the movie version!!
@@Sewstine honestly so do I 💙
You made a bomb ass dress. Like, seriously, what a great project
Iconic, absolutely iconic. You are a lovely and welcome part of the “never stopped playing dress up” club.
Incredible make of this iconic dress.
I absolutely love your videos! This video is a prime example of why! You explain everything so well and I love listening to you talking about the dress history and drafting! The dress looks amazing
‘‘Tis is so fun! I’m living vicariously through you ❤️❤️
You are absolutely stunning in your creation! Yes, please make more Hepburn dresses!!!!
Your confidence in this is outta this world! Great job as always!
Best line from an Audrey movie is Peter O’Toole in How to Steal a million :
[Evaluating Nicole's cleaning-woman costume]
Simon Dermott : Yes, that's fine. That does it.
Nicole Bonnet : Does what?
Simon Dermott : Well, for one thing, it gives Givenchy a night off.
Love how they poke fun at her Givenchy obsession!
Such a great silhouette! Looks great while sitting, and while standing. So good.
Woaw, that dress is absolutely stunning! And it suits you so elegantly! Amazing work!
Wonderful energy and enthusiasm! Best shots with toddler in the end, made it realistic!
absolutely adorable
You look absolutely amazing in this dress! I love how you have the whole wishlist of outfits to make, and actually go ahead and make your dreams come true! This is so inspiring!
This was a delight to watch - love how it all came together! :)
"I'm ready to go around not naming cats and avoiding commitment" - absolutely BROKE me on that cut.
You look amazing and this video was a lot of fun to watch. Fantastic work. ❤️❤️❤️
stunning project.
One of my favorite costumes on films, you always make such a beautiful garments ❤️❤️❤️
I've been binge-watching a whole bunch of your videos lately, and you're an absolute wonder! I don't know how you manage to find enough hours in the day to juggle all the things you do. You're an inspiration, and a complete delight to watch too.
Absolutely gorgeous. I loved watching the zipper technique - made it feel super approachable
Thanks for mentioning the undergarments! I was curious about the foundations. I really appreciate the thoroughness you show in your videos. A lovely project ☺️
I literally was smiling this entire video. The dress looks like it would make you feel really good in it. Another great video. Thanks so much
You look stunning in this. I've always loved Audrey's style in her movies, so looking forward to you recreating some more of them.
This is stunning!!!! Such an amazing job Christine!
You are amazing! Also, I love your baby boy wandering in.
So much fun! How cool that you could get the same sunglasses. Love it.
Absolutely stunning, love the look from the dog at you eating.
Hehe thank you Constance!!
This whole video was delightful to watch. Thank you for sharing this with us! 💗
My heart belongs to the "Love You Didn't Do Right By Me" black gown in White Christmas. :)
I LOVE this dress. You did an amazing job. I love all the dresses you make, but anything Audrey has my heart.
Just beautiful!
I vote for the white dress with black embroidery which I first saw as a child and has stayed in my memory as the most perfect dress ever. I have also desired the lamp shade hat and the sunglasses along with the short black dress with the feather hem.
Yes!!!! I love those!!
That is absolutely fabulous - great job as always
Yes, please! Please, make a whole series of Audrey dresses! You did wonderfully and I love her ever so much
You looked so amazing in that dress!!! Seriously you looked stunning. Can't wait to see the next video.
You nailed it. Love what you did. Enjoyed tue history of the dress. Thanks so much for sharing. God bless.❤️
My dad is a HUGE Audrey fan. I love the way you recreated this dress and I'm sure he would be thrilled if I would one day wear a dress like this! I'd love to see more recreations, your work is always so beautiful!
Love this so much! Thanks for sharing and making such great videos!
This is absolutely delightful!
always so exciting when a new sewstine video shows up in my notifications! i always appreciate the extensive history and costuming lesson!
This is just wonderful!!! You’re so amazing!!
Thank you so much for this ❤️❤️ beautiful. Please do more!!!!!! xx
Breakfast at Tiffany's was my first foray into old films, and I always adored this dress (minus the fact that it looked like she could barely walk in it). I love seeing this come together, and come to life! You did an amazing job, and I love hearing your process
The dress 👗 is iconic!!! You did a wonderful job!!! Take care and have fun!!! 😷😎😷
It's so gorgeous!
The dress is wonderful! You look splendid in it! 🖤
I love it! You did a beautiful job, as always.
You look so glamorous I love this!
Fabulous project and wonderfully made video as always! Thank you for the very detailed instructions on zipper installation. Also, your little boy is ridiculously adorable, love that smile.
Yes. Do the Audrey Hepburn series👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you for all the information on this dress. And it looks lovely on you. Love from Texas
I love the dress, and the get ready was fantastic!
This is such an iconic look! You did a fantastic job! Sabrina is one of my favorite movies. I think that Sambrina’s party gown and her little black dress are two of the best outfits in that movie.
Oh my goodness!! You did such a fantastic job. I love all the detail you put in to make it as accurate as possible!!
You look absolutely STUNNING when fully dressed up! Fantastic work (as always)!!!
wow , beautiful job, you are very talented ! simply lovely and elegant !
Looking positively gorgeous and sassy. Love the recreation!!!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽💖
This looks so good!! Really wonderful work. Give me a sec I now have to get "moon river" out of my head
Hahaha I was humming it the whole time I was sewing it!
