If you are a person who actually wants to learn Korean, let me teach you some things.
-For example, you can’t just write ㅏ. Like she said, it must begin with a consonant. Which is why we have ㅇ, which is a fake consonant. It has no sound at all. So because of the grammar rules, it would be 어 instead ofㅓbut still sound exactly the same.
-Instead of SVO, (subject, verb, object) for sentence structure, for example: ‘Alice cooked chicken’. In Korean, it is SOV, (subject, object, verb). So instead it would be Alice chicken cooked.
That may sound completely stupid, but it is true.
    Last but not least,
    certain words have special endings.
For example, -AH 아 & -YAH 야. They involve endings for names.
-Ah, is used to end names that have a consonant for the last letter. -Yah, is used for names with a vowel as the last letter.
That is everything I will be sharing today. I may reply for grammatical facts for the Korean language & Hangul/Hangeul!

Here's some tricks that can help you remember some of the different consonants and vowels:
ㄱ looks like a Gun so it makes the G sound
ㄴ looks like a Nose so it makes the N sound
ㄷ looks like a Door so it makes the D sound
ㄹ looks like a Rattle snake so it makes the R/L sound
ㅁ looks like a Map so it makes the M sound
ㅂ looks like a Bucket so it makes the B sound
ㅅ looks like a Summit so it makes the S sound
ㅍ looks like Part two or it looks like a Pillar so it makes the P sound
ㅇ usually comes at the endiNG of a block so it makes the NG sound. Or it looks like a zero so it makes no sound at all
ㅎ looks like a Hat so it makes the H sound
ㅡ looks like an open bOOk so it makes the OO sound
ㅣlooks like a trEE so it makes the EE sound :)

    • @btstrashcan3755
      @btstrashcan3755 8 років тому +68

      for the other vowels:
ㅓ the line is Up frOnt so it makes the UH sound
ㅏ the like is On the other side so it makes the AH sound
ㅗ the line is Over the other so it makes the O sound
ㅜ the line is swOOped under so it makes the long OO sound :)

ㅡ. This vowel sounds more like "eu" but more in a "eugh" like if you were disgusted
You make this sound by closing your teeth together and pulling your bottom lip down a little while making a sound almost like a humming noise i guess.

for anyone struggling to nail the alphabet- these are some of the tricks that i use to help me remember! i use the shape of the actual letter to remind me of what the sound is:
    ㄱ- g as in “gun”
    ㄴ- n as in “nose”
    ㄷ- d as in “door”
    ㄹ- r/l as in “rattlesnake”
    ㅁ- m as in “mouth”
    ㅂ- b as in “bucket”
ㅅ- s as in “ski mountain”
ㅇ- zero as in nothing, since it does not make a sound when out before vowels
ㅈ- j as in “joy” (idk)
ㅊ- ch as in “champion” (think of the little mark on top being a person who reached that tallest mountain or sum)
    ㅎ- h as in “hole”
ㅍ- p as in “part II” (since the two vertical lines resemble the roman numeral for 2)
ㅋ- none for this one haha
ㅌ- t as in “tres” (used spanish because the “th” sound in three)
ㅏ- a as in “After” the line
ㅓ- uh as in “befOre” the line
ㅗ- o as in “Over” the line
ㅜ- u as in “under” the line
ㅣ- i as in the letter i haha
    ㅡ- eu as in “brOOk”
These aren’t perfect or foolproof but they sure did and do help me remember!

    Rules to writing:
Korean words can have multiple syllables
Words made after learning the alphabet:
    나 (na) - means I (me, myself, and I) 💁🏽
구름 (gu-reum, but it sounds a bit like gu-deum to me) - means cloud ☁️
    도서관 (do-so-go[w]an) - means library 📚
    나무 (na-mo) - means tree 🌲
    고양이 (go-yang-ee) - means cat 🐱
안녕하세요 (ann-yong-has-seyo, or ann-yong if person is younger) - means hello/hi
    {Warning: from here on in, I give up on pronunciation}
반갑습니다 (bang-gap-sa-me-dah) - means 'nice to meet you'
나는 음악을 좋아한다 (na-nin im-ah-kay jo-wa-han-da) - says 'I music like' but means 'I like music'
감사합니다 (kam-sa-me-da) - means 'thank you'
I have nothing better to do with my life than this. Sorry about not writing the last pronunciations correctly, but to me it sounds close enough.

There's even a 5 minute youtube video that completely explains how to read hangul lol. But to actually learn the meaning, grammar, traditions and slangs, I would say it is very difficult for an English speaker (especially if you don't speak any other Asian language) because most of these things are very different from English. I have family who moved to Korea and I’ve always been interested in the Japanese culture. And not just the pop culture.

If your base language is English, then good luck. Japanese is probably one of the hardest languages for Native English Speakers to learn. At least the Korean writing makes a ton more sense, but I believe their sentence structure is the same as Japanese, which would make it a pain to learn as well. Anyone wanting to learn both those must be crazy.

The round character is like a placeholder, kind of like zero in numbers. If it is placed before a letter it means nothing, like 0.1 is 1. If it is used after a vowel, it makes a sound, like zero makes 1 into 10. Hope this helps
