Thanks for that uick tip. Just what I was looking for. Never taken a CCT out before, but am going to do so on my XJ900f as I hope it's the CCT that has seized, and not the Cam chain itself which needs replacing. Fingers crossed. Thanks again.
HUGE help! It worked on my '12 Kawi 450. I tried installing it without releasing it, and the chain was as tight as a guitar string. This simple video is a great way to keep from destroying your machine. Thanks for sharing!
I have a 2019 and you cannot do it this way due to cannister 2" to the right. Looking for a unique screwdriver, which is probably the Honda tool. Cannister removal, I believe to be the emissions charcoal container and hose assemblies, is next on my list of tweaks as soon as I identify a complete de-smog kit.
Thanks for the video. My Cam chain tensioner is leaking oil. Can I simply take out the cam chain tensioner and replace it with a new one to stop the leak or will taking it out cause issues with the piston?
Yes. you can take it out. I recommend setting the motor to TDC to make sure you don't get any rotation of the motor and possibly affect the timing when the tensioner is pulled out. there is a plug on generator side of the motor that lets you see the flywheel and find the TDC mark.
I’d probably take the head off if that fell out just in case some dirt got in there but as long as it wasn’t super dirty around the bolt that fell out then I think you should be good
My crf250x is making a little rattle when cold started but goes away when bike is warmed up its definitely the cam chain im hearing ...will this trick fix that issue????
I'm not sure why they fail. The bike is the video had 300 hours on it and had gone through two top end rebuilds, but it's on the original tensioner. It's an automated tensioner with a ratchet mechanism so I assume that the teeth wear out and can't keep the force against the cam chain.
If you are working on the cylinder head, adjusting valves, etc you need to remove the tension from the cam chain to allow the work to happen. Otherwise the chain is too tight to remove.
thanks for the video! I see these tensioners fail quite a lot on honda engines, and the chain starts to rattle. Do you know how can they actually fail? they seem pretty bulletproof.
i have an 05 crf 450 and it makes a wierd noise we took the valve cover off and the cam chain was loose im not no expert but would the tensioner be bad?

Now we're talkin'! Been looking for exactly this info for over an hour now. Thank You! L&S.
Thank you! This video was really helpful and you explained it perfectly
Thanks for explaining how that works, i couldnt figure it out myself...
Excellent, to the point . Perfect video
Thank you I tightened up the damn thing it was impossible to kick you saved me from major damage

So it works on kawi too then? I had a ziptied contraption for doing my valves hahaha
Thank you, I'm going to disassemble it nowThank you, I'm going to disassemble it now.
Thank you, now I understand how it works.
good and quick explanation, thanks

Thank u for the clear and easy explanation
Thank you!
Is this still valid for late model CRFs like the 250R or the 450R. I think it's the case but maybe someone can confirm?
Does this work on a 05 trx450r ?
does it works on HONDA CB150R EXMOTION?

What dose it mean if it's not shaping back?
Thousand likes 👍👍👍 thank you
Hey check the video on my wall...towards the end of the video my bike makes a funny noise when I rev it...is that my cam chain or something else?
should tensioners be changed when changing valves? or changing the cam chain? thx for the video :)
All the time
And this is how you can reset your chain tensioner?
If that 8mm bolt felt out on a ride what would it do? And would you need to check the tension aka taking the top cover off?
I’d probably take the head off if that fell out just in case some dirt got in there but as long as it wasn’t super dirty around the bolt that fell out then I think you should be good
Will it work fkr a arctic cat 400
if my tensinor is making a rattling noise would I be able to drive it about 13 miles to a shop or no?
Noah Kocher I wouldn't
My crf250x is making a little rattle when cold started but goes away when bike is warmed up its definitely the cam chain im hearing ...will this trick fix that issue????
Did you try it and did it fix that issue ?
So when released as shown, the tensioner can be replaced by removing the 2 bolts?
Did it effected anything when you took it off

Hi is it the same process as doing it on a 125 as it looks the same as mine
I can't confirm but Honda generally uses similar designs for stuff across its products.
sorry..why we need to release it?is it can solve the engine noise problem?
If you are working on the cylinder head, adjusting valves, etc you need to remove the tension from the cam chain to allow the work to happen. Otherwise the chain is too tight to remove.

@Ardent Fan Does it have to 'pop' back or can you unscrew it back in position? Mine won't pop back, is it a failure.
@Ardent Fan Thank you!! I took it apart my spring is/was broken, ordered a new one - appreciate it..
Will this work in my 2008 XR200?
Xr was discontinued well before 2008
i have an 05 crf 450 and it makes a wierd noise we took the valve cover off and the cam chain was loose im not no expert but would the tensioner be bad?
Did you ever get and answer cause my o8 has a clicking noises and dont know how to fix
Same problem for me now after 11 year comment lol
So basically mines broken because when it does not release back
Doesn’t work chain is still too tight and won’t come off
