- This simple DIY is an in-depth alternator replacement procedure on a bmw e36. It is a relatively simple and quick job, however it is very important to know as a failed alternator will cause a non-starting car and/or the car to cutoff while driving.
This particular vehicle is a 1995 BMW 318i, the alternator was more than likely original to the car and it has more than 140,000 miles on it.
Typically alternator replacement is needed in two cases, the first is that the regulator inside the alternator has failed and it is sending to little or too much power to the battery. The second reason, is when the bushings fail inside the alternator and cause a horrible squeaking noise, especially at higher rpms.
This alternator was replaced for the second reason, you can hear in the video the whining that the alternator makes at high rpms.
Alternator replacement on an e36 318i should take no more than one hour.
Several common components to check while replacing the alternator is the idler pulley, tensioner assembly, and serpentine belt.
Must be nice not having to remove the fan shroud.

can i know whether m40 alternator is compatible with m42 engine ?
If you are having difficult getting your bottom alternator bolt to thread all the way through, use a mill file to on the alternator clearance to get some wiggle room. After 4 hours of trying to get the holes to line up, I finally resorted to filing down the space. After that I had enough wiggle room to align.
Would you happen to know where the ground strap for the alternator is supposed to go i was told the engine mount but I'm not sure i have it correct
I go need this video in the next 2 day kkkkk
You have sincerely helped me out a time or two w my '95 318ic. Keep up the great DIY's

I used this video just to take it off as I was trying to replace the oil filter housing gasket, but when I put it back on, it was buzzing when I had it on accessory mode. I think it may be going bad, but I’m not 100% certain and may have not screwed on the 10 and 13 mm’s on the back as tight as I should have. Should I just replace it?
hey man i have a 94 318is that idles low and dies out when it goes too low of an rpm. recently it shut off and hasn't come back to me it cranks but nothing ignites . do you think it could be the alternator i've already done sparks, spark wires, idle control valve and next i wanted to try the alternator but i thought maybe i could ask your opinion first.
Want the purposes changing the alternator without changing the bad tension pulley
Whats that pully and metal piece called? Mines missing on a motor im building and cant find anywhere
Hey for the pulley and metal piece does it need the metal piece behind it? And also are the tensioner and alternator pulley the exact same parts?
Good video. It helped me a lot.
Greetings from Poland!
Question when you put the new alternator in do you have to put the second set of nuts on ? They wasn’t tighten so I figured I don’t since the new one came with two washers and two nuts instead of four unles I take the old pair and put them on top.
Nope, just the two!
