- In this video I replace the alternator on my 2003 BMW E46 with a M54 engine. Since owning the car, I’ve experienced an alternator noise that sounded like a whine and wanted to replace the remanufactured alternator that was currently in place.
This procedure is applicable to the E46 (MY 1999-2005), E39 and the E53 X5 with the M54 engine, but differences may be present due to engine layout.

Bosch 120 amp E46 Alternator: AL0703N

Excellent explanantion, although, it would have been nice to be warned about the radiator fan; no so much about the special tool needed to remove it but the direction of the thread.😣 Thank you, your video was helpful

Thanks for the video. Very clear and professional. Need to do this job in my 2004 e46 with 230k miles. Driving to work early in the morning two days ago, the battery light came up and everything from brakes to transmission were malfunctioning. Fortunately I was just a few blocks from my office and I was able to make it. In the afternoon the car started fine and drove back home without any issues, obviously no fog lights. air or radio on, stop by O'Reilly Auto Parts to check the battery and according to their testing everything was fine. The car is parked in my garage until I can figure out what was wrong, but I will imagine that it is the alternator.
Thanks for watching! Did you ever solve the problem you were having? Sounds like the alternator, but you might be able to replace just the voltage regulator if the other mechanical bits on the alternator are ok.

Just done this on my 2002 325i. Very easy job, even on a rusty UK car. I replaced it because my battery light came on and I had 11.2v instead of 14.2. Had the original BMW alternator on it at 179K.
Impressive mileage and I'm glad to hear it was an easy job. I'm at 188k, but this replacement was the 3rd as it seems the original alternator had already been replaced once. Thanks for watching!
I just did my 2004 330xi (6 speed) at 200K and yes, you can interchange the Bosch and Valeo units, That bottom mount sleeve was a bastard. Usually you can hit the bottom bolt after you loosen it to push out the sleeve enough to release the alt., but mine was pretty frozen. After a lot of cussing, it finally came out. Now it's charging beautifully!

Hi, i wanted to ask if it matters what alternator do i use for 330xd 150kw? or do you know which to use for thi model? (e46 330xd 150kw)
I'm not sure which version it uses as that is not a model we have in the US. This website is a great resource for finding the correct type and part number though: www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/select Once you select your vehicle options and spec, the alternator info is under 'Engine Electrical System'
