Awesome video. My dad had this exact pistol when I was growing up and this was the gun I learned to shoot on growing up in the 70's. I carried it all over the woods walking and exploring with my sister and alone as a kid. I considered it "my" gun for years .
Unfortunately I found out much later that it was not actually my father's gun but his brother's and my dad was only taking care of it because my uncle didn't want a pistol the house when my cousins were still living there. My Uncle took it back at some point when I was in college and I never saw it again. :(
Funny enough you look even more like my father than any of his four brothers. We must have some common ancestry somewhere not too far back.
One of these days I will find myself one of these to add to my own collection. Thanks for the memories.

Wow! That brought back some memories. I learned to shoot on a High Standard Supermatic - pretty much the same pistol you were shooting, only with a compensated bull barrel and adjustable target sights. The year was 1971, and back then there were only two commercial pistols you could buy that were suitable for bullseye competition - the S&W 41 and the High Standard. GREAT pistols, and a VERY enjoyable video. Thanks for posting!

I have my grandfather's Sport King as well, also in mint condition, from the early 1950s. It's a great plinking gun, and quite accurate. In fact, I like it so much that I let a friend play with it, and ended up selling him a different Sport King from the estate of a deceased Uncle. What's funny about the guns is their peculiar ammo pickiness, in that mine only likes CCI mini mags, and his jams on mini mags but is great with Federal. My understanding is that you really need to keep the clearances in the mags spot on, and I have the adjustment tool to do that. It works well. My other grandfather's gun is a pre WWI 1911, and I shoot it in his honor too. It's great how these guns bring back memories.

Hello again. Beautiful pistol you have there with a great history.
    I have a 1951 (my birth year) lever model Sport King with a 6.75" barrel and a 1956 M-101 Dura-Matic with a 4.5" barrel. I had a 1953 Sport King, also with a 6.75" barrel, but gave it to a friend as a birthday present. He's a very good friend. :-)
Love shooting both of them. With their Luger style slanted grips it's like pointing your finger.

That's quite a Family Treasure Heirloom !! I purchased a used High Standard Model 'A' (1940s), several years ago at Howellsgunstore.com in Gray Maine. Excellent little plinker and very accurate ! Only one magazine and I hope to find another magazine for this pistol at The Sportsmans Guide once they become available again. Speaking about Grandfathers and Family Heirlooms, my grandfather was in the Army in France during WWI and he had brought home quite a bit of Brass Shell Trench Art, which I have to this day from my mother. My Cat loves to rub up on these Artillery Brass Antiques ! ......Darn !! I wish my Grandfather brought home his 1911, or a German P-08 Luger, instead of all that Vintage Doughboy Artistic Brass ! Lol !

I've got a suggestion for you. I've got a Ruger Mark II Government Target Model that's 30 years old, and several years ago I noticed that it just wasn't grouping as tight as it did new. I took a .22 brass bore brush, wrapped a patch around it, impregnated it with fine valve grinding compound, and ran it through my barrel about ten times. That got all the old lead fouling out of the barrel, and accuracy went right back to where it was new. You have to make sure you clean the crap out of 'em after using valve grinding compound since it's very abrasive, but it can really do wonders for old, leaded barrels. JAT

You have a treasure. No, it’s not the kind of treasure that’s worth many thousands of dollars, but the kind that reminds you of someone you loved every time you see it, and the kind that reflects the craftsmanship of a byegone era. I’m tempted to tell you to take it out and shoot it, but I’ll leave that decision to you. I know holding and shooting the one in the video is kind of like shaking hands with my grandfather again. Take care.

Hrfunk, reminds me of my fathers mint condition Supermatic 102 Tournament, a true piece of top quality craftsmanship. It makes me want to weep when I think that the British Government sawed it up and destroyed it along with thousands of other great classic pistols, even including historically important iWW2 "bring backs" like PO8's P38's etc in the 1997 handgun ban.

Among the MANY stupid things I DID NOT do when I had the chance was never purchasing a High Standard .22 pistol. But then I did the exact same thing when it came to buying a "JM" stamped Marlin .444 when I was but a sprig on the old family shrub. Well, I managed to find and purchase the rifle recently (minty) and know where, as of last Friday, I can get a (minty....minus box and included propaganda paperwork) High Standard .22 pistol very similar to the one your Grandfather sold you.....I guess I'm just going to have to get over myself and come up off the hip for the one I found and buy it while I can. By the way, is my already questionable memory failing me, or did High Standard not produce some of the finest, most accurate, .22 pistols for the U.S. Olympic teams for a number of years? I seem to recall that being the case at least. Excellent video on a pistol I have always admired. Keep 'em comin'!!!

    • @hrfunk

I’m not well versed in the history of High Standard. I know a little. They were around for a long time, and they’re known mostly for their good quality .22 Semi-auto pistols. They did make a few other types of firearms, and they had occasional government/military contracts. Beyond that, you’ll have to consult someone more knowledgeable than me.

cowboycarl121 Threy are a design from another time. They lack some of the modern styling/bells and whistles you’ll find on current production pistols. As you note, though, they work well and they are quite accurate. Back when they were built, that is all that really mattered.

It's pretty easy once you know. Lock the action back. Put a rag on the side of a chair. Put your hand on the gun as you're ready to shoot. Press down on the barrel button against the rag. It will depress. You will be able to remove it. Make sure the action is locked back or it'll take off. Once the barrel is off then you can slowly let the slide forward. Watch for any parts so you can see how to put it back together.

If you can import them, check with Numerich Gun Parts. If not, I don’t know of a source in your country. Maybe someone else here will have a suggestion.

Is it cold in here or am i crazy ??(that's what Charles Manson said Lol )no just kidding do older (vintage) 22 guns sounds different then thenew ones when you shoot them ? The older ones were made hit very different steel and by hand compare to today's guns ,if you can shoot them side by side you can tell the difference.

Fortunately, I don’t think that bill will succeed.
