American here-the first I’d ever heard of Jimmy’s tax problems was on Cats, when it was one of the topics of the week. When Jimmy said, “In my defense-well, I got nothing”. I had to look up the story, and my respect for him for that statement went sky high! More people ought to do that. Anyway, I’ve liked him ever since. You’ve got me as a fan, Jimmy!
Yes he said I could tell you about all the charity work I do but I don't see the point in lying 😂😂
Well dig deeper, he was far from the only person involved, several other high profile celebrities were also involved but he got hung out to dry, the others had better publicists I guess
The problem for me was that everything he did was approved by the government. Also many of the MPs criticising him were indulging in their own far more numerous tax dodges. I have no problem whatever with his tax dealings.

Can you stop using the word "cancelled"? You can't be "cancelled" and then still host numerous TV shows, tour the world and have a string of Netflix specials.

Jimmy, I love you so much, you are genuinely one of my favourite comedians, even if I get uncomfortable on occasions (which is one of the things I love about your comedy) … but please, please, please stop saying you were cancelled on multiple occasions … you weren’t. As someone who was cancelled for very personal financially related reasons, and it took 14 months to even get a hint of something (in a very different world to comedy) the only thing I’ve ever been offended by you is the “I’ve been cancelled” … otherwise mate you are the fkn bomb, absolutely loved your new Netflix show, keep up the awesome!!

Just because the cancellation didn't succeed, doesn't mean it wasn't attempted. Lots of attempts at cancellation fail and the way Jimmy responded helped enormously. It also helped that his accusers, mostly Tory MPs, were quickly exposed as hypocrites. They went on and on about Jimmy Carr but when, shortly after Tory supporter and donor, Gary Barlow was found to have done something worse and on a much bigger scale and didn't offer to pay it back, it was suddenly, "We can't comment on individual cases"! Utterly hypocritical but it helped Jimmy's position. :)

yyYYees finally (0:28) Jimmy says what we've all thought off Cameron for doing that, "called out" well Cameron likely just had people better able to hide where Cameron moves his earnings away from HMRC. (Tid bit on the "HMRC"; I googled it to be sure it was correct, and it was, just, I am Swedish, such that I've never had anything to do with British tax and that, kinda funny, due to Jimmy Carr being barked at for tax avoidance and I've seen UA-cam videos so many times over, that I had the "HMRC" printed into my memory) Also due to "Have I got news for you" and other British content I am more aware of the british politics, and the recent joke that have been "the British PM post" (May-Liz-Boris), (oh and FYI Sweden have had a similar issue with "no-good PM" just prior to our last election where we had to do a re-election so the UK is not the only place to have such issues with electing twits for PM post) All that to say that I am quite aware of how moronic Cameron was to piss on Jimmy Carr, when he dam well have done the very same thing. Really a case of "glass house".

If I could get past the fact that he looks like a young Riohard Nixon...yeah, most folks do not have the burden of remembering and hating Nixon. Splendid comedian though. Which is what makes his resemblance to Nixon all the stranger.

Carr crosses my personal line of bad taste on occasion. I groan, then I listen to more of his act, and I'm soon laughing again. I 100% agree with what he says. Either you find the joke funny or you don't, but it's just a joke.
The funny thing is, I don't enjoy his overtly disgusting side very much - but when he talks about free speech, people letting their feelings get hurt and such, he makes more sense and becomes more entertaining.
I guess the added intellectual dimension he puts in now raises his game to where the crudeness is overshadowed by his debating skill.

Just seen this clip, I'd heard that as well, it was a legal loophole, what i don't get is, if he didn't do anything illegal, why did he have to pay anything back?
Because it was unethical even though it was legal. Lots of things aren't against the law but aren't really 'the right thing to do'. FWIW I believe the law was changed a while later to make the thing he did illegal, because enough people believed it was a bad thing to do.
He didn't legally need to give the money back but he was embarrassed enough by how upset people were that he decided to. It sounds like something he hadn't thought super hard about before doing.

Today it seems that the people who don’t like the jokes shout the loudest and then everyone else is expected to soothe them!
There is a difference between satire and comedy. A lot of comedians seem to do satire without realizing it. What I mean by satire is any comedy that forces you to pronounce on the value of something. Even here Jimmy uses the words ,Tory c*nt. Dark comedy is not predicated on foul language.. When laurel and Hardy fall off a ladder they are being funny, when you call someone a derogatory phrase or use it to tell a joke, it is much less obvious whether you mean it or whether you have to mean it in context of the joke for the joke to work. Jimmy if you read this I love you, but it has nothing to do with your comedy, you're a great host and an adorable person, if that isn't good enough for the people who are thinking of hiring you, I'm sorry, but being outrageously funny has a lot less to do with why people like to see Jimmy Carr. It is more about your overall persona and it's inclusion into what is available as entertainment. If you tell a Joke or say anything that people don't like, that should always be naturally disconcerting and never ignored.
Since he's still on TV to this day, you might want to check the word cancellation, because apparently it doesn't mean what you think it means.

Jimmy's not canceled. He's just using that as an excuse. Every single show, "Oh this next joke is getting me canceled" ... and then delivers a bad line. Some laugh, some don't. Move on. Stick to hosting and roasting shows.
His acts have progressively gotten worse. That last one is him pausing after the punchline on each joke to wait for the crowds applause.! Im sick of him and Banijay recycling 8/10 Cats & Countdown every which way.

Maybe this news just didn't make it to the states but I hadn't even heard about this tax thing with Jimmy Carr until earlier this year. I'm still not even sure what happened exactly. Lol and even in the states, I watch a lot of British comedy. Countdown and 8/10 Cats is one of my favorite shows, Big Fat Quiz and such, I enjoy Jimmy very much, I had no idea he was canceled.

He wasn't cancelled. He's been the host of 8 out of 10 cats since 2005 he's hosted big fat quiz every year since 2004. He's done 5 comedy specials since the tax scandal. Cancelled is such an overused term, essentially when any faces even mild criticism they claim they've been can cancelled.
He's great, but i can't watch him if my missus is around. Reminds me of back in the day with Richard Pryor & Eddie Murphy & my parents
I’m attracted to some of his jokes and repelled by others. Overall, I find him very clever and hilarious.

He's a light entertainer now, not a comedian. He wasn't cancelled; he cancelled himself.
What cancelling?? His tax avoidance? He committed a crime and he got railed on,p while holding down full time shows and a full touring schedule. He did NOT get cancelled for anything.
The thing is he didn't commit a crime, what he did was 100% legal, it just meant he was able to avoid paying certain taxes, which he later paid. If I could avoid paying taxes I would so can't blame him.

Jimmy thinks he got cancelled because he had to take some jokes for a couple of weeks. Compare and contrast to Angus Deaton who had to face a couple of weeks of jokes about it, and then got fired and I don’t think he’s been back on TV since.

He was advised of what he was told was a legal tax reduction scheme, and who wouldn’t take an option to legally pay less tax, really, to be called out after the fact and after he’d made amends and after he’d promised to pay it back for something that was perhaps morally reprehensible but perfectly legal - and he was the ONLY ONE out of multiple personalities, many of them higher earners and would have owed much, much more to be called out by someone who is a confirmed tax AVOIDER, and a neglective parent to boot?

Tax avoidance is not a crime and neither is it morally wrong. If the State wants more money, change the rules, don't hound people for doing what you allow (and do yourself).
He's very marmite as are his jokes, sometimes I find them hilarious and then other they just go over my head. I never knew he got cancelled, I must of missed that, I'm glad he has sort of cancelled his rolling froggy laugh tho.
