I saw Steve Vai in Baltimore about ten years ago. He was amazing as always. He did a meet and greet after the show. While he was signing my stuff, a guy asked him what the secret to his playing is. Steve said " there is no secret. Just practice twice as much as you think you need to."

¡Genio! As a person that studied guitar very seriously in my youth, practicing around 5 hours a day for about 6 years (long story short, got married, had kids, quit playing), I'm impressed that Steve's technique is still very tight. For those of us that aren't natural picking gods, I've heard Steve comment that maintaining his pick hand is an issue for him, keeping that pick hand fast and accurate is a major, constant concern. I see him making concessions in certain parts of the song, but the performance doesn't suffer at all. Bravo, Steve. Great performance.
