Back in the days I bought ”Passion And Warfare” (on CD) and heard, for the first time, ”For the Love of God”. Up to this day it’s still one of the most beautiful guitar pieces ever written. ❤️🤩
I had the LP. I was completely mesmerized by two songs at that time: Crushing Day by Joe Satriani and this one. My goodness, such excellent pieces of musicianship. The best I have ever heard.
I'm a keyboard player, and never liked the the hardest side of rock, so i did'nt know who Steve Vai was, but when i heard this song in a music store i felt in love, for the writing and the arrangment even before the tech skills.
One of my favorite songs of all time. I can never get tired of listening to this song. Every time I listen to it, I want to cry. Steve must have been expressing something profound in his life when he composed this.
I saw an interview and he said that when he was recording this song he was in the middle of a water fast, day 5 or so, and that the melody was given to him as previous poster stated. Id say that he was pretty raw, emotionally and spiritually at that moment.

he has a tone, a vocab and phrasiology that makes him totally unique. there are other players who have these things (unique to them) and the only one who readily springs to mind is Dave Gilmour.
@@lukather1 I'm a big fan of Guthrie but his tone isn't super indistinguishable from the typical early 2000s lead fusion tone . A better example is Eric Johnson . He has his own unique tone and phrasing with regards to chords , arpeggios and soloing.
Love instrumentals but I think there's something about lyrics people "relate" to. I only listen to some. I used to wonder how someone could not like a great song 👉then finally, I understood when achey breaky heart got really popular. The most simple songs are the ones the majority seem to like... but they can't really like music or maybe... don't even hear music the same way 🤔

Vai said, "I took lessons with him for three years and he was very good! He didn't tell me that I had to play like him or that I had to do things this way or that way."
I disagree. He wrote the song. He came up with all of the notes and parts himself - naturally he's going to be able to remember them all. Steve Vai is one of the world's greatest guitarists and he's an amazing musician overall - he does lots of incredible things, but remembering his own songs is not one of them.....

I saw him in Montréal (90's) can't recall if it was at the Metropolis. The fact the ticket was only 25$ tells a lot about the greatness of his spirit. I agree, to witness this dude playing in real life is such a blessing. The musicians he hires, my God... never gonna forget the drummer eating marshmallows while rolling on the snare with one hand?!!??!! It was hilarious.

Anyone who is a musician knows that there were many mistakes. But they are not noticeable for those who do not know about music. I don't think we'll ever see him play 100% like the first time he exploded his career.
As a person that studied guitar very seriously in my youth, practicing around 5 hours a day for about 6 years (long story short, got married, had kids, quit playing), I'm impressed that Steve's technique is still very tight. For those of us that aren't natural picking gods, I've heard Steve comment that maintaining his pick hand is an issue for him, keeping that pick hand fast and accurate is a major, constant concern. I see him making concessions in certain parts of the song, but the performance doesn't suffer at all. Bravo, Steve. Great performance.

Tremendous performance and this tune is so beautiful. One can see that each note matters to Vai and he digs those notes out from a very deep place in his heart.

I've been a Steve Vai fan since Eat'em And Smile was the first cassette tape I ever bought as a kid. I listened to that album today while I worked and it's still one of the greatest guitar albums ever. I saw Steve with Satriani at a G3 show long ago. 2nd row, center. My brother got his pick and still has it. He was amazing then and he hasn't slowed down a bit. Awesome guitar player.

This is incredible. So pure sounding and less processed that what I think I normally hear. I’ve been onboard since 86 and loved every moment of Steve’s career. So glad I’m here on this mortal coil at the same time he is, what a gift.

I've been a Steve Vai fan since Eat'em And Smile was the first cassette tape I ever bought as a kid. I listened to that album today while I worked and it's still one of the greatest guitar albums ever. I saw Steve with Satriani at a G3 show long ago. 2nd row, center. My brother got his pick and still has it. He was amazing then and he hasn't slowed down a bit. Awesome guitar player.

Eu não aguento é ficar vendo as caras e bocas desses guitarristas modernos que a bem da verdade é coisa que começou com o Neil lá em 1970 quando aos 17 anos ele veio ao Brasil como segundo guitarrista do Santana's blue band...guitarristas como Wes, Benson e outros mais botam esse carinhas no bolso, e sem efeitos e caretas...pô,para ô!...
This is incredible. So pure sounding and less processed that what I think I normally hear. I’ve been onboard since 86 and loved every moment of Steve’s career. So glad I’m here on this mortal coil at the same time he is, what a gift.
After 30 years, For the Love of God still sounds fresh. Never gets old. Steve is an absolute master.
