Back in the days I bought ”Passion And Warfare” (on CD) and heard, for the first time, ”For the Love of God”. Up to this day it’s still one of the most beautiful guitar pieces ever written. ❤️🤩
I had the LP. I was completely mesmerized by two songs at that time: Crushing Day by Joe Satriani and this one. My goodness, such excellent pieces of musicianship. The best I have ever heard.
I'm a keyboard player, and never liked the the hardest side of rock, so i did'nt know who Steve Vai was, but when i heard this song in a music store i felt in love, for the writing and the arrangment even before the tech skills.

One of my favorite songs of all time. I can never get tired of listening to this song. Every time I listen to it, I want to cry. Steve must have been expressing something profound in his life when he composed this.
I saw an interview and he said that when he was recording this song he was in the middle of a water fast, day 5 or so, and that the melody was given to him as previous poster stated. Id say that he was pretty raw, emotionally and spiritually at that moment.
