One thing I hope the second movie does is make it more obvious WHERE Elphaba is when she sings this song. But I CANNOT WAIT to hear Cynthia’s version. I’ve loved this song since I first heard it.
Any actress that can do THIS, with a 103 degree fever, is beyond amazing. Wish I'd gotten a chance to see her live! You can hear how ragged her breathing is, but she kept her voice from showing it, for the most part, while singing the words. AH-MAZ-ING. In awe.
Noa S. Please name a better one then. Cuz when Shoshana sings “IM WICKED THROUGH AND THROUGH”. I believe that shit. You can feel her heart break and the transforming of her character from the struggle to good and bad. Goose bumps everytime
earth angel I hade a fever like that last year and I couldn’t even eat more than one bite of plain sushi rice so the fact that she can do this with a fever that she is a literal god btw when I was sick I binged a lot of nexflix and slept a lot cause that’s all I could do also I missed two and a half weeks of school during that fever #shoshanaisafrickenqueen
No Good Deed has always been Shoshanas STAPLE from Wicked. It was always highlighted her wide range.. I think people forget her Fiance of 5 years was KILLED in a Hit and Run shortly after she left the Broadway Cast of Wicked. She did the tour and those performances were SPELLBINDING. This number during the tour was like witnessing Shoshana grieve Tyler over and over again.. Keep in mind, something she holds dear, Tyler pushed her to follow her dreams and not her bank account. FYI Shoshana has not done a LONG TERM musical theater contract since Tylers death... and she rarely ever performs no good deed anymore...Thats important to understand as a fan..
Yay, but she was in off-Broadway shows like beaches and funny girl and she was in an out of town production of Catch me if you Can and did off centers songs for a new world so it's like she never really left.
As a fellow actor who has done musicals with colds and fevers, I couldn't even begin to express my amazement at how well she did because when I did it I was struggling bad. She's amazing!
I've read in the comments that she had a 103 fever. If that is true I have total new respect for her. She looked like she didn't feel well but she kept on doing it. Her acting was completely different which I love.
If you ever told my acting teachers, say "I have a fever" they'd say "Great, so let's see this character with a fever." Shoshana clearly makes the best of being sick and weaponizes it to make Elphaba that much more tragic. A true artist.
Is it weird that her being ill actually *adds* to the acting? It makes it sound like Elphaba's body is rebelling against her and trying to save her from hurting herself, but she is so lost and scared and angry that she'd rather lose her lungs than give up.
@@valeriedecadbury2978 OP just pointed out her interpretation, intentional or not, its still there. And I agree her determination to carry on even when her voice is giving up on her is so appropriate for the situation and song. It really is giving the impression that she'd rather break down and be completely voiceless than give up on finding her love.
@@valeriedecadbury2978 you sound like someone who isn’t analytical or deep enough to have thought of that interpretation independently, tearing down the person who was clever enough to post the original comment. Hahaha.
The look on her face and the little head nod at 03:09 is my favorite part of this. It's such a small thing but it's like she's saying, "Fine. You want a villain, I'll give you a villain." I think it really adds to that part of the song. Shoshana is a queen!
This is THAT song that got me hooked on this musical when I first saw it. I was blown away by this and still am twenty years later. Shoshana’s rendition here has always been my favorite.
you can somewhat hear Shoshana's breathing is a little ragged. But in truth, it hardly detracts from her performance. She is probably my third favorite actress in the role of Elphaba. I'm impressed that she maintained so much power still in her voice even though she was sick.
Ragged breathing could be from the fact too that she has a 50+ pound dress on, and different lighting/ heating cooling etc. I think her acting was very good and of course being sick affects your voice.
I guess I didn't think of those factors. Though I would slightly modify that number on the weight of the final Elphaba dress. I've read from the official site of Wicked that it's half that weight. But yes. Shoshana Bean is amazing as Elphaba. I wish I could have seen her on stage, but unfortunately I had no interest in theatre at that age.
Ah I was just going by what Idina said once. If it's 25 pounds, factor in undergarments, boning, boots, mic pac and all other things so I'm sure it just feels heavy
For me she is the one and only Elphaba. She inhabits the role like no other. I had the good fortune to see her go on when she was still the standby. I was already a fan, and I’d come specifically to see her. Before the show started, the people around me were talking about how disappointed they were (understandably) that Idina was out that night. I randomly turned to the people next to me and said, “The girl who’s going on is incredible. I promise you’ll end up being thrilled that you saw her.” After “Wizard and I” the audience went nuts, and at the end of act one there was absolute pandemonium in the theater. A couple of days later it was announced that Shoshana would be the next Elphaba.
She delivered a performance no one had ever heard before. She OWNED every song and scene. She is the better singer over idina for me. I went to NYC specifically to see her in this role shortly after she took over and it was worth every penny. The audience went absolutely crazy for her at every turn. Idina will always be the original, but Shoshana changed the game when she took over. She set the bar and the standard for what a vocalist Elphaba has to be. Idina was good, but she can't sing any of these songs like Shoshana. That is a fact.

ilvglee Shoshana was Idina's understudy and then took over the role a day early because of Idina's accident. Falling through the trapdoor during the melting scene must have definitely not been fun for Idina.
To think she had the flu and a 100+ temperature during this is insane. You can hear it if you know her voice well, but to an untrained ear she is phenomenal even while sick. That takes insane talent.
Shoshana is who inspired my passion for this show! It has continued to be my dream to play Elphaba and she had set the bar for me! Phenomenal!!
