I bought a used trade-in neon mid pandemic to compensate for gas prices over my old "college mobile gas guzzler", and a tech i took it to get inspected gave me a whole list of these kinds of repairs needed, including replacing this engine mount. He wanted 2 grand for parts and labor. I bought all my parts for like 350 total, I recall, and can do almost all of the repairs myself, like the one in this video, with minimal new tools. I bought the car in March 2022. It's gone up to today (Sep. 7th) without needing any major work. (I think the guy was giving me the run around, so I waited to see if something "failed". I finally got around to taking time off work to do most of the repairs today, and hopefully the longest ones later this weekend. This video has been in a saved playlist for me to reference and I'm so happy that today is the day I can take it off my playlist, as I have learned how to do and have completed this repair. I am so grateful for your help with this. Keep doing what you do, and thanks for making your video easy to follow and leaves little need to ask questions.
This repair specifically, I think, saved me like 100 bucks, ordering my part from a part website(no easy available junk yard), and like a (faked) hour of labor. Neon still runs great and I'm only really changing the mount because I'd rather not wait until the steering wheel rattles the way you described it lol. Thanks again!
This is perfect. I just bought a 2001 Dodge Neon ES couple of days ago. That has been sitting for 2 years. Noticed the same issue with the motor mount where I going to replace it. This video definitely helps me now how to do it!
There's a factory spec for getting your motor in just the right position to help with any leftover vibration. 119mm (4.7in) from the center of the small hole in the body-side bracket that has the push-retainer in it to the center of the nearest "Bridge" stud.
just bought a 2004 RT 5spd this video helped me alot because I think my top mount might be going to break soon. I subscribed and I'll be watching more of your videos. very simple and helpful. especially with a separate camera girl (:
Thank you so much for the video. I just got the oil changed on my daughter's car and the guy pointed out this top motor mount is almost completely off.
Thank You! I realized I had the top motor mount broken. The shaken has been going on for quiet awhile now, so I'm only hoping none of the other ones are broken as well.
DaJayCash Thanks for your comment and I'm glad that the video helped you out and saved you some money. Please subscribe and let me know if you ever have any questions.
I got what I think is an 02 sxt or whatever its called... 2.0 4 spd auto.. nothing fancy, and the motor mount is destroyed (rubber).. everytime I hit the gas it bounces around and goes thump... hoping to get another one soon... thanks for the in video.
My Chrysler neon is shaking too and the rubber on the mount is cracked what all tools are needed and would I need to jack it up? How do I tell if it's not two mounts because I purchased two mounts but only see a crack in one how do I know to change the other one. ?
The rubber on the top mount cracked so i repleced the whole top mount but it still makes that annoying noise what could be wrong? Do i need to tighten something up or what do you think the problem is?
Hi Jamie... helppppp.....please....lol. After replaced upper....lower..and transmisión motor mount....my Neon 2005 sxt... the vibration still there... ( its feels at the right side) Im scary to work on the center mount...... (i can't see if its broken or not). Second question...: how i can to know if the motor mount are aligned..??
Great video!!! but one thing u forgot to do on these weird neons after upper strut mount change out is doing an engine alignment. That may fix that vibration u r having..also for that mount to fail. It maybe the mount thats close to the timing belt cover has gone bad.Its difficult to get to.
Hi good sir,I don't know if you can help me but I keep having the engine light on coming in my dodge neon for the evap canister.I have already changed the canister but I keep receiving the same error. However after passing my car through a car wash the engine light disappeared .Would you have any idea on how to fix it? thank you and your video is awesome it helped a lot.
THANKS FOR THE VIDEO GREAT MASTER........MY 2002 NEON IS START EXPERIENCING HARD GEAR SHIFTS I HAVE FILLED GEAR OIL BUT IS DOING THE SAME. SOMETIMES THE GEARS SHIFTS SMOOTHLY OTHER TIMES JUST STRUGGLES.IS THERE ANY HELP IN THIS PROBLEM?
Cottontop Photography I'm glad it helped if you need anything in the future please feel free to keep us in mind will be glad to help you with anything we possibly can thanks again
wayne bucannon hi Wayne and thank you for your comment you know I would only replace it if it appeared that it was broken if not I will just keep on riding
This sounds crazy but my step-sons Neon is having issues with the clutch disengaging and I am wondering if these busted motor mounts your talking about have anything to do with it. I picked this car up for $600 with this problem. I bleed the slave cylinder which helped somewhat then adjusted the rod at the pedal and got rid of all the free play. He drove it for a few days and then calls me up to say that everything was fine until he went to push in the clutch and now it won't disengage. Sure enough with the pedal to the floor the car moves when the ignition key is turned. I tried to adjusting rod on the pedal again but it didn't help. I had it towed to my house . I tried to see if I could start the car in gear. It moved when turning the ignition key again. I shut the engine off, came back out an hour later to show my wife and now the clutch is disengaging fine! But, when the car moves, it makes this really bad scrubbing sound, like the fender rubbing against the tire. It wasn't doing that before I gave him the car. I looked at both the mounts your talking about and they are busted so I got new ones coming. The weird thing is when the engine is idling or I'm revving it up, it doesn't move or vibrate like I've seen on other cars with "gummy bear" but not yet busted mounts. I'm just trying to figure out if these busted mount maybe throwing the drive train in a bind before I replace the master and slave. I've never encountered a clutch that would disengage OK, then not disengage then somehow fix itself.
great video. subbed for sure. Just wanted to describe what my 05 neon is doing see if this may be cause. So the car runs good enough but when your driving and accelerating, it shakes and it's really loud. Could this be my motor mounts?
Elante Ford Hi There, what would you like for me to show you? Not sure what you are referring to in this last post. Let me know and I'm happy to help you out.
Have a 2000 dodge neon, automatic, paid a shop to replace all motor mounts and car is still shaking afterwards- please help what should I do? Mechanic said nothing is wrong but car is shaking worse than before the work was done! Showed me the old motor mounts and how they were all broken. Car shakes at low speed but idles good
is it ok to not jack the engine up while doing this engine mount because i didnt and now my top bolt is stripped and will not come out. can i cut the bolt out and put a new one in?
Hi so what you need to do is hold that bottom nut with i think an 18 mm as you turn the bolt on the top let the bottom wrench get held by something so it wont move , then it will come right off , don't sweat it what happens is that bottom nut is supposed to be welded in place in the world breaks and that's why spins so no problem def dont cut it , that actually happened to this car
+JamieJones TheCarMan thats very helpful but ive tried to get a socket on the bottom nut and i kept slipping off so now its stripped..what else can i do to get something on that nut to keep it from twisting?
Marvin Crittenden did you try a wrench a box wrench will hold it , but once you get it on there you will have to put ur hand down there to to hold it on
That is actually a torque strut. They don't support the weight of the engine, but keep it from rotating forward or rearward. And whenever you loosen any torque strut bolt, you're supposed to do an adjustment procedure to properly position the engine and load the engine mount. This involves loosening both torque strut bolts and using a floor jack with a wood block on the bottom of the transmission bell housing to rotate the top of the engine rearward until the distance from the rearmost attaching stud on the engine mount bracket to the center of the hole for the washer hose clip on the Shock tower bracket is 119 mm, and then tightening down the torque strut bolts to 87 ft. lbs.
If you really want to stop vibration set it to the factory specification. Look it up you will see once you loosen it your supposed to also adjust the setting which requires taking the bottom loose as well.
Jamie, your video is great! I subbed after needing some assistance with the lower engine mount which i see seems to be missing from your videos but it was pretty simple. I was hoping you'd be able to answer me a question about my 02 dodge neon. I just crossed over 200k miles, it has a small oil leak, engine light is on and I believe it was an evap code (checked the gas cap- it doesnt stay on all the time). I replaced the upper and lower engine mounts and am still getting large amounts of rattle once the RPMS are moving. Occasionally the car will shut off at a stop light (right as i step on the gas) and i assumed this was due to too much engine movement. Suggestions?
+Michael Neuendorf does it seem to be metal on metal or more of a spark type situation or does it seem to be external or something is hitting something on the outside
PLEASE HELP!!!!!! my 2005 neon is leaking a coca-cola-like sticky dark brown liquid from the centre AC vents and since there isn't a cabin air filter I don't know what to do! Please help because the car has so many problems and I need to fix it up myself!
jore lopez go ahead and subscribe cuz I have one in line waiting to do, although I'm not a hundred percent sure it needs the center mount I'm pretty sure so I'm going to be doing a lot some videos on it thanks for the comments
the real problem is the mount that is under the top "dogbone" style mount. this mount bolts trhough the fender well. that mount is what causes the torque struts to rip. this mount is not near as easy to replace
The Dodge Neon is overall a great compact, but unfortunately it has always been known for developing a bad motor mount here and there! FYI, you have an upper/lower passenger side strut mount (s) along with a center mount. On the driver's side under the battery is a transmission mount. Pls. note that there is an adjustment that needs to be made. 4.70 in. (119 mm). Measure the distance from center of rear engine mt. bolt to center of hole on the shock tower bracket... This procedure is for torque strut adjustment. Ref:. Dodge Neon Chilton Repair 2000-2005...
Would have been nice to see what kind of vibration you had before the replacement. Also a good idea to support the engine from the oil pan in the event that the other mounts are bad as well (that you did not know about). Other than that a good video. Just replaced the same mount with great success. Thanks
Debbie Viorel Hi Debbie , well i guess anything is possible but highly unlikely , pepboys are ase techs so and its really hard to screw it up , lol so tell me whats going on to make u think that , whats the car doing ? I will try to help u get it going , what year is ur neon
2005 had 2 motor mounts put on a few months back and my car started shaking when stopped at light so took it too dodge and they said it was the lower motor mount so they put in lower motor mount drove it off the lot and it was doing the same thing shaking took it back to dodge and they told me that who ever put the motor mounts in did it wrong sounds like bull if ya aks me
Debbie Viorel Hi Debbie, there are a total of 5 mounts on a Neon. The driver side has one motor/transmission mount located under the battery and air filter housing. The passenger side has one engine mount (some people call it a "Mid" mount) which requires a little more work to replace, than the others do. The passenger side also has 2 torque mounts, an upper and a lower, they are pretty easy to replace. There is also one mount located in the front of the engine at the bottom of the engine block. (It's pretty easy to replace too) If all the mounts are good (?) Problems sometimes arise because there is an alignment procedure that is often over looked when replacing engine mounts on a front wheel drive car. Mis-alignment may be what is causing your problem. So the answer to your question below is, Yes, engine mounts can be improperly installed.
That's the engine mount grammaw could replace. Now replace that center mount, you know, the actually difficult one? This video is good for an 8 year old kid to learn about cars, but changing a Neon top mount is something my mom could do. Jesus..

Only thing I see wrong is that there is a specific distance measurement b4 you tighten down that mount
What is that measurement?
119mm = 4.7 inches
