Don't Turn Your Shoulders for a Driver Golf Swing
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- Don't turn your shoulders in the golf swing if you want to hit driver longer. Golfer's make this mistake all the time and you won't just lose distance you will struggle to hit driver straight.
In this golf lesson Danny Maude reveals exactly how the shoulders work in the golf backswing AND downswing. Improving how you rotate in the golf swing enables you to do two things:
1. Store energy in the backswing
2. Release that energy at the perfect time at impact
What you will enjoy about these simple golf tips is they can be taken straight to the course because Danny will help you feel and visualise the perfect golf swing.

ABOUT DANNY
-----------------------
Thanks for stopping by. I created this website as a resource just for you to support you on your golfing journey as I know how tricky learning this game can be…to say the least!
I personally found learning the game too long and difficult in the early days. I read all the books, watched all the videos but my game was not improving. Then after studying various forms of neuro science, motor learning, psychology and personal development in less than two years I went from struggling golfer to the final stage of the Open Championship.
On UA-cam and my personal website (www.dannymaude.com) I will bring you the most up to date training, training that is getting tangible results for my clients right now. I don’t know where you are in your golfing journey, you could be just starting out or maybe your body isn’t as flexible as it once was or you’ve got ambitions to slash your handicap. Wherever you are I’ve created a place here you can learn, share your ideas, ask questions and get all the support you need to enjoy this great game.
Be prepared though. If its a quick fix you are after Im not your man. Here I will give you step-by-step advice that you can take straight to the practice ground and apply to the course but it will require you to get stuck in, screw up…a lot, practice some more and then watch those scores tumble
I’ve had the pleasure of coaching thousands of students all around the world and if you are up for the challenge and are ready to get in the game…LETS GO TO WORK!

This golf lesson provides a couple of wonderful drills to help you hit your driver straight. If you are a beginner golfer and are looking for some golf driver tips that are simple and easy to do then you are going to love this.
I will show you the golf swing slow motion so that you can see what you need to do to improve.
We look at 3 things:
1. How to stop slicing your driver
2. How to swing more in to out or how to swing more inside out
3, How to get the correct impact position with driver
The golf swing should be much easier than we make it. I’ve created a free guide for you here to go with this video. I hope you enjoy www.dannymaude.com/practice-plans-detail?productId=dont-turn-your-shoulders-for-a-driver-golf-swing&widget=hidden

Hi Danny
I haven't picked up a club yet... Stood in the office ( hoping nobody's watching! ), Swinging backwards and forwards... Importantly UNLOCKING, feels so much easier. Can't wait to get on the practice ground. Thanks mate!
Love to hear how it goes Steve
Bin begeistert von der Klarheit und Umsetzbarkeit in deiner Video Tipps! Vielen Dank auch aus Germany!
Thank you Max 😁👍
Your videos and teaching are incredibly valuable. Thank you and keep them coming.
Danny, I watched this video several times and repeated the drills over and over. I played today, and for the first time, I hit my drives straight and gained about 25 yards. The simplicity of your explanations and swing thoughts allowed me to finally feel the proper swing and club path. It has been a struggle for years. I can’t tell you how much this meant to me. The other benefit is that on the 2 times I sliced it, I knew instantly what I did incorrectly and fixed it with your tips. I’ve used your tips for pitches and green side bunkers found in your other videos with much success. You’re really the best online instructor I’ve found. Thanks so much for helping me enjoy the game so much more!
That’s amazing to hear Fred, thanks for sharing
This guy is THE #1 UA-cam coach .
Thorough explanations and easy to follow drills and feels , keep em coming Danny 😀
Nice rogue driver👌👍
Thank you 😁
I started playing golf at age 68. Danny was my Utube instructor! He’s the best! I’m shooting around 85 to 90 now at 71, Danny has been my rock!
Thats awesome!
One of the most knowledgeable & likable golf instructors on UA-cam! Thank you, Danny.
That’s really kind of you to say Christopher. Really appreciate it
And he's actually English, unlike the rest that all seem to be from Northernland! 😉
@@SomethingEveryone 😅
You said that right. I learned a lot from this TravisMathew fan...:-)
He stopped my slice and added 20yrs ,most times
He’s so good at what if feels like in order to execute the technique. So often the feel can be so different to what we see
Hope it helps Warren
Saw q. ❤
He's the o lying person I listen to from a 170 slice to a 250 slight draw ,that's why I sub to Danny, best coach on this
Next range session, I'm watching this on repeat! Such a simple but effective visualisation. Thanks Danny!
All the best Ricky
Allowing oneself to turn the head to peak at the ball was my major ‘eye opener’.
The graphics/animations are both fun and a great aid to understanding the concepts being presented. Two thumbs up, I hope they are here to stay.
Thanks so much Steve, appreciate the support
I just started playing golf last year and the way you teach is way easier to understand and practice. Im obsessed with learning this game and it’s very difficult to learn on your own how something is suppose to feel. I struggle with just learning basic mechanics of a golf swing and I am horrible at finding my low point in my swing but. Your videos have helped a ton! Thank you!
Dude its insane that this is free. Thank you❤
Really happy to help
Love how he breaks the swing down into simple understandable components. Excellent video as always. Thanks Danny.
Thanks so much for the feedback Tony
Gotta say these were the videos that made the difference for me. Danny gives you the necessary info in a digestible way, which was an issue for me. But just visualizing the circle and practicing the sequence of movement has made a huge difference.
Wonderful to hear Alex 🙏
It always amazes me how easy it looks like when I watch the video... Then I go in the garage and I pull all my driver shots ahahah I guess i'll keep on practising and someday I won't rely on luck to drive a 285-300Y tee shot :) I'm near the 106 club speed when I achieve a really good one for now.. I simply need consistency. Is that too much to ask! Thanks again Danny for the valuable lesson.
Pouring water out of my ear. That’s new to me.
Always love the analogies.
😁 simple visuals, hope it helps reduce the thinking
That’s my big problem. Overthinking
I cant even make contact with the ball Danny. help
Prob bc you're swinging at the ball and not thru it...
@@nunya2512people keep saying that like it means something. You have to hit the ball that's the whole point. Everything else is just getting there. I have the same problem this guy does. Don't just come up with bumper sticker responses
I have that problem at the moment and what I can see when filming myself is that it’s usually one of two things - either I’m standing too close to the ball or my backswing is too low ie not at a 45 degree angle… now I just need to fix that 😉😅
I hope this helps:
I've been back at the driving range for 5 weeks after a 20 year break. I understand the struggle. This old stubborn dog is no longer a well-oiled machine.
What clicked for me was a video by Jonathan called "Hit hard, stop quick." It teaches good contact and so much more.
If it doesn't click for you, try the following:
- do half swings only, or what is called 'L to L' swings. Focus on tracing the largest circular path you can make. Forget the top of the backswing and the cool looking follow through.
- keep your head still and your spine angle constant. Focus on letting your torso and upper body be the anchor point of the pendulum you're creating. Your legs will follow and adapt naturally.
- Most importantly, slow down!
- with progress comes less tension and more momentum. With momentum your half swings will become 3/4 swings. In time it will become a full swing.
Then, work on the top of your backswing,l and the follow through. What happens inbetween will take care of itself from all your half swings practice. This is where I'm at after 5 weeks.
Then, you can really get into the weeds with things like sequencing.
Good luck.
Maybe you need to relax your muscles, and focus on a smoother sweeping motion, don't worry about striking the ball. Effortless movement is actually fast and you don't want to swing hard with tension.
Thanks Danny. I watched this vid and two live lesson replays and my driver was so much straighter today. 11 of 15 fairways in today’s comp. 🥳
Wonderful to hear Rodney well done
Paint splatter tip helps loads!!!! Great ways of describing feels
Hope it helps Jack
Can anybody explain how Danny can drive 293 yards with easy swing without power? Last Taylormade video Tommy Fleetwood drived 275 yards with full power???? I am watching these videos long long time and still dont understand how he can drive more without full power than most of the TOUR players?????
I get asked this a lot, I’ve got a video coming out in a week that will show you
Danny. I was wondering if you could do a video on grip size, and club fitting. You know mid, standard, jumbo grips, and the importance of club fitting.
I’ve got factory sized clubs. And I keep hearing about having them fitted. Can you touch on this one video?
Will see if I can work it into a lesson.
The “being able to move your head a bit” move helps if you’re a female golfer and have boobs 😂. Everyone focuses on male golfers, but the straight left arm and fixed head obsession is pretty hard if you have boobs. Also probably hard if you’re a bloke that never skipped chest or bicep day 😁🤷🏻♀️
Yes, one thing that would really help is to imagine the chest pointing slightly towards the sky when you complete your turn
I have been watching you videos since I started golfing a year and a half ago. You have definatly helped me. I am having problems with my 4,5 and 6 irons. And if I am playing a course with soft ground.
Follow this video and scratch a line in the turf to assess location of low point
I am confused Danny. Title of the video is "don't turn your shoulders for a driver swing" which is a great tip. However, I see shoulder turn in your instruction here just like the pros. Please clarify.
Great question Ken. When golfers hear the word turn they will tend to move them around the body creating a very flat looking swing.
I much prefer the loading of the shoulders or the spiralling up of the shoulders as this promotes the correct up and down movement of the arms.
The body primarily takes the club around the body while the arms primary role is to take it up and down
Great stuff as usual Danny, and love the fancy new cgi graphics. It cracks me up though how all you golf pros do that funny little dance every time you stand over the ball, it's like there's an earthquake going on or something. Why do you all do it?
😆 I never noticed that
Fantastic; well done. You are easy to understand. Merry Christmas from Southern California or in the UK "Happy" Christmas
Merry Christmas Warren have a great weekend
"Small little shot", it was 198Yards with no apparent effort or swing speed at all!! That is quite an eye opener for me as I really struggle to make "small shots" as I cannot get out of my mind after the back swing, now leather it otherwise my swing will go all wrong..
Hope this helps to gain a few extra yards
The only channel I follow. No 500 attachments no gimmics. All feel and club/ body interaction and reaction. Best info out there
Really kind of you 🙏
Brilliant - this video explained in simple terms why senior golfers struggle to achieve solid ball connections.
I am 76 yrs old & a high handy capper however following these tips/ drills has improved my game massively .
Thanks Danny
Thanks John glad they are helping 👍
I’m on a
Nice video thank you. But the problem I have is my right trail shoulder hitting my chin in the downswing. So the axis is very flat and I have no idea how I get to the ball. How do I train to drop my right shoulder in the downswing please?
One simple thing would be to make sure your head doesn’t travel too far ahead of the ball
This seems an excellent guide as to how to achieve what we golfers strive for. I have found recently that having a little more weight on the lead foot at setup helps before I commence the backswing. Then I try to get my weight shifted back onto the lead side before I commence the downswing, while keeping centred over the ball throughout. There is a lot to master before one achieves consistency, but Danny's guides always help to explain the essentials.
Very kind Johnny thank you
Can you make a video on shank fixes? I have watched many on youtube but none of them seem to consistently work. I think it will benefit a lot of people, especially with the type of natural and intuitive teaching method that you use!!
Of course Brian
Hey Danny, thanks for the excellent Video. Do you think this will work for the Iron Swing as well. I can‘t see a difference.
It will indeed Dirk
You're simply the best
Better than all the rest
Better than anyone
Anyone, on the t'internet!
Really enjoying all your lessons, and even showing some improvement in my game¬
Really happy to help Barry 😁
Simple, concise and very easy to follow. Great work as usual Danny. Been struggling getting stuck on the inside with driver mostly so this is a great visual I'll definitely give it a try 👍🏼
Absolutely Aaron , think about how your body works to create the circle. Sometimes when I get stuck inside, it can be caused because of a slide of the hips.
I'm hitting straight left or right now and chunking quite a bit and its very frustrating. Driver is still slicing. Hopefully this will help me get it straighter.
Love to hear how you get on David
Danny this is the best golf lesson I've ever been to or watched. It's all about getting the visuals right and this makes it so simple. Thanks so much
Thanks so much paul
Danny's "little" shot went 262. 😆
Splatter ink! What a terrific idea. I’ll try today. Thank you Danny.
Have fun
Seems like you make a big lower body move in the backswing but a small move with the arms to help keep them in front of your chest at the top which makes sense conceptually
Always a pressure shift that helps the fluidity of the golf swing
Danny please clarify corkscrew rotation loading the back swing or 45 degree circle
What would you like to know Howard?
Hello Danny,
i am a 52 Years old Golfer with some pain in my Back and follow your Videos, which are really good !!
But i have one big Problem. The Backswing is good, also the Downswing. But as of any (unknown) Reasing my Body stops after the Impact.
As of this, the left Wrist "cocks" .
So, my Swing seams to be a Hit and not a Swing.
Have you any idea what i can do ?
Thanks
Matthias
💯 I’ve got a video coming out either this Saturday or next which will help
@@DanielMaude Hello Danny, that sounds really good for me...cant wait to see the Video 👍
Matthias
Brilliant. I love the simplicity of your descriptions, Danny. As my instructor always says, this really isn't difficult... we (us hacks) just don't know how to connect the dots. "Splattering wet paint on the follow through". I love that so much!! ☺
Thanks Mark glad it’s helping 👍
Hi Danny, what about having the right shoulder lower then the left shoulder in the setup, as you hear and see everywhere. How does this fit?
It will naturally be lower because the ball is forward and your right hand is lower on the club.
I have a huge issue of my right arm (trail arm) being straight at impact. I lose a ton of speed because of this.
Ask yourself a few questions eg
- is your club striking the ground after the ball?
- are you getting enough pressure over on to your front foot early enough in the golf swing
- are you too focused on strike and mess on the flight you want the shit to take
what if i am a right hander playing right handed, but with a left handed grip 😂 Im defo not helping myself with this grip style
It’s actually quite a good way to play. Check this video out ua-cam.com/video/mV1wNLaMCjI/v-deo.htmlsi=d39nGeTskuJTXz2K
turning your head is limited by eye dominance. I lose sight of the ball turning my head to the right.solutiom?
The key then is to develop your intuition and awareness, losing site for a short moment and then regaining it when it matters works really well according to a number of my students.
Feels a little nerve racking at first
Many amateurs stand too close to the ball, not realizing when they swing, the arms straighten and they heel the ball...
certainly 👍
Thanks! Really appreciate your work. All the best.
Really kind of you Luke, thank you
After watching this, had to run into the garage and try it out. I think you nailed the secret to a consistent swing. Thanks again Danny. Wishing you and those close to you a very Happy New Year.
Happy New Year and glad it worked! 👍
shouldn't the hips turn less than the shoulders? saying the tailbone should point towards the target seems to indicate otherwise.
Hips roughly turn 50% of shoulders
First video! Thank you for posting. Cheers
Welcome to the channel
what a wonderfully instructed video. thank you.
Pleasure, hope it helps
practiced for 3 days with this vision in my head, improved more than last 2 years of practice😂
Amazing, well done Zhang
I like the idea of paint/brush the wall. Very helpful. The water from ears is hilarious. 🤣 the unlock idea is something I didn’t know especially the head part. I usually keep my eyes on the ball and keep my head still, gonna try it (turn the head)
Thanks for helpful tips as always
Pleasure, look forward to hearing how you get on
@@DanielMaude btw, I try the chipping and pitching as you describe. It works well. I think it’s going to save me 3-5 strokes. Will let you know. Thx
Great video. Lots of useful info and ideas for working on the swing.
Glad it was helpful Paul
Same with irons?
Thank you foe another very helpful video.
Best wishes for Christmas & the New Year.
You too Alan, thanks so much for the support this year
As a short stature golfer I figured this concept out awhile back when I was trying to build a repeatable Driver swing. Danny is correct that it will lead to consistent solid hits which adds distance and accuracy. My proof was, that my same level taller friends, who should out drive me in distance, will only out drive me maybe once or twice a round when they get lucky and produce a correct swing plane leading to more of their potential speed and power. I only drive the ball 250 to 260 yards, but in the world of hacker that's 320 baby!!!! 🤣🤣🤣
It really is Kevin 👌
Aaah! Whatever happened to the XPlanar system - that massive circular gizmo that you stood inside of with a club handle on a rail that tried to ingrain this sort of tilted circle feeling? You never see them nowadays...
So expensive for the average person unfortunately
@@DanielMaude Lots of clubs bought them though - a club I was at had one. They do still make them, but yes, at £700 a throw, not for the average individual!
I guess that's why the guy that painted my house is such a good golfer.
😁
This is exactly what I’ve been working on recently. I was swinging too vertically and my release was like the one you demonstrated which ended up in a slice. Since I’ve really concentrated on setup, swing plane (which now feels almost horizontal compared to the old one) and better release of the club, I can hit draws or fades on demand and sometime even straight! 😂. Distance has consistently been 20-30 yards further too now that the ball isn’t spinning like crazy. Great video Danny, will be watching it on repeat this week.
Awesome Tom, any plans for Xmas?
@@DanielMaude chilling with Mrs A and our daughters and hopefully a round or two if the course unfreezes and opens again! Hope you have a great one with Laura and family!
Great video Danny! Easy to follow and very clear. Is it best to film yourself from behind to figure out the problem?
I think both angles help. Personally, I love the face on angle because it allows me to see if you have made a centre pivot.
@@DanielMaude thanks will try both!
Excellent use of graphics. No glitz, just great information. Thanks !

I assume this same circle works for irons as well as driver?
Absolutely Steve
Idk wtf the splatter idea was about
Hi Danny, like so many others - just took this right hand paint splash thought to the range and yes it works. I also use the left hand Frisbee throw - same motion just a different feel and different hand. Awesome video, loved the graphics, well worth the effort.
Thank you Mike, really happy it helps
Hi Danny - Do you have a video like this for your irons?
Why 93% of Golfers Can't Strike their Irons...

such a pleasure to watch your videos. You have helped me immensely. I am 72 year young. Love when you work with your dad. By the way your lesson with your dad on getting out of the bunker was so extremely beneficial. Played with a senior golfer who played from the white tees, maybe 3-4 handicapper. He thought my bunker play was outstanding. Love your KISS principals. In this video you helped me with the visualization on the finish of splashing a paint brush. Made things so clear and easy. Well done.
Hope they help Phil 👍

I've been playing golf for nearly 20 years, and thanks to your videos (plus a fair bit of range time!) Yesterday I used Driver in a competition for the first time ever. It wasn't perfect but kept the ball in play and now have something to build from. Thank you!
Pleasure Tom, really happy to help
I learn so much from your videos💗 As a senior beginner golfer I just realized I am trying to not move my head at all🤣 I definitely have to loosen up👍 Thanks Danny 🥰
Another great video Danny.
Just a comment or two on the shoulders.
I have a book by a guy named Ted Hunt and he tells the story of on a cold morning at Pebble Beach a young Jack Nicklaus explained the the lead shoulder points down to the ball during the initial stages of the takeaway. I’m assuming this is what you are aiming for?
Secondly I was watching Full Swing on Netflix and there was a close up of Colin Morikawa during his backswing and it highlighted this movement exactly.
By the way the visuals you applied are really helpful
Cheers
👍🇦🇺⛳️
This all makes perfect sense! One thing I'm confused about is why some people say to drop your trail shoulder. Wouldn’t this make getting back on 45° plane significantly more difficult? I try that motion with the club across my shoulders and I can't see how you ever get back on plane.
I’ve really been struggling with hitting the impact way towards the top of club face, particularly with driver. “Steep” so to speak. Simple fixes like tee height isn’t helping. I’ve exhausted myself in rounds and practice trying to overcome it. It’s affecting my ability to get in play off the tee. I played in an open tournament too last weekend, double bogie on everything that wasn’t a par 3 due to this, ball goes straight up, broken tee, Occasionally I’ll get the impact down towards heel or toe center and squirt it right. I’m squaring about one in 30 balls with driver now..Can you make a suggestion that is repeatable that I can consistently get in play off tee shots deeper? Thanks Danny!
I really dislike it when a pro doesn't seem to understand the main reason why people turn in the way he describes they shouldn't. (Most of the time it's not the lack of knowledge it's the lack of ability to turn that creates this poor motion.) Disclaimer. if you look at true beginner the number might be the opposite. (I think however he is talking about the most played as a group and the majority who do this are over 45-50 with more than enough knowledge as it is.)
I promise you, more than 95 % of the player who does this in that group has some kind of back problem that prevents them from turning in the way they should. (In other words, this kind of "advise" is pretty useless to them). If you can't do it, you can't do it, right?!
As a former scratch player with a severe back problem today (now playing at 22) still making some rounds per year around 78-82 but most of them end up over 100 I'm painfully aware of this problem.
His tip is useless for us with really bad back problems. If we stay centered we have to move the hip and the shoulders to exactly the same degree to make something happen, creating a shot where you start with your arm first in your downswing as your hip can´t start without starting the arm - And as the arm is faster after that you haven't solved a thing for us (However if people in this group turned away from the center this type of player gets a tiny bit more shoulder-turn giving them/us the only way left to create something similar to a real swing.) Read; A place where the hip can start the downswing, not the arm.
Otherwise, our turns stop after 45 degrees and/or just copy our hip, and the degree at which the body part turns back and forward.
If I and people like me fight that and force our shoulder to move a little more than the hip the pain would be unbearable, creating more and more stiffness for every shot we make.
Guess what happens then?! Really bad scores follow, trust me. (Even though the initial strikes might be really good.) This is not a great idea.
This is highway robbery! 😂 Danny boy in my opinion is so damn good he could step in and coach pros at the highest level and improve their game,,, we’re getting him free.. world class player/coach who could literally have his pick to coach but is really doing this to improve the games of those who couldn’t afford a coach much less afford the equipment to join the golf team. I took lessons or more accurately “tips” from any passer Byer that looked like he could swing a club… Ive pieced together a pretty decent game but since I started implementing Danny’s tips and technique in my practice regime and has me hitting more fairways and greens then in my entire 30 years of trying to figure this game out..Danny me Boy, you do your parents proud! Thank you for what you offer..
what starts the backswing, left shoulder going down, hands moving the club, right hip going back?
Great graphics Danny, always great when the golf swing appears simple.
Big thanks to my videographer and editor Leo for that. He’s a legend
❤❤ another easy explanation of what we should do but forget as soon as we get to the first tee 😂😂😂😂
So true Jon, hope the images make it easier to take the first tee
@@DanielMaude There’s always hope Danny😂😂❤️❤️Hope you and the family have a great Christmas.
Awesome visual aid nice one Danny👍
Thank you Robert, all the best
I start out the round hitting the driver good, but usually I start struggling with it by the 2nd nine and completing the backswing with a good transition becomes almost impossible. If you could do a video on a solution for that, it would hopefully help.
This is a great way to explain this! 👍
Than you
Wow! About 6 "ah ha" moments in this video Dead of winter in Chicago but this has me grabbing my clubs and swinging to your video in my home. Thanks Danny. Just the motion feels so different from what I was doing. At 69 my range of motion had decreased but this seems to have given me some new found clubhead speed and dexterity ... Heading out to the indoor range next week to give the new swing a test drive!
That’s brilliant to hear thanks for sharing
I have been working out, practicing and training since the golf season ended, in the hope that next season I can golf better and most of all, drive the ball to 230-240. But what stood out to me here was that I have always resisted the idea of turning my head! So today I practiced exactly what Danny demonstrated here and it made a big difference. I can't wait to go to the indoor range next time to see if/how much progress I've made. Great tips, thank you so much! Cheers from Canada.
You are very welcome
I turn really well with my irons but struggling doing with a driver setup when my lead shoulder is higher.
Best teacher going around! Thanks Danny, Ive dropped my handicap by 5 in the last 8 weeks!
That’s amazing Tim well done
Well done I take it your in USA tho
Great video Danny, reminds me of Mr Myagi 'Wax on, Wax off'..lol..Can I ask what your thoughts are on Coaches who promote pointing the L/Shoulder at the ball in the backswing which produces a really steep Shoulder turn?..thanks again.
Something I don’t promote but I would never say never as it has proven to work for some people
Great explaining, the part about the head and ear is what I've been watching Jack Nicklaus do his entire career.
Absolutely H P
