  • Were you a That Guy when first learning how to play D&D? Today's dnd horror stories from r/rpghorrorstories about a bad DM that targeted a bad player. The player ends up growing but this DM seems to have remained toxic.

    The worst thing you can do, is not change for the better. That DM got the boot for it, and so did our story teller. However, our stoey teller improved. Should've just explained more to them and had them learn before chucking them out. You should teach people instead of complaining about their capacity to perform task. If they dont want to hear it or try to learn, fine. You at least tried. Let them sit in on the campaign and learn from observing, give them character to test out in a session like a "hired mercenary" that they can learn with so they aren't encounter fodder. Hell, tell them what they should do first or at the least could do. This isn't dark souls. Even when you make it a souls like campaign.

      I totally agree. If you take the time to teach a player you can gain a party for life. A few shakey sessions is nothing in the grand scheme of things.

      I fully agree with you guy's on this. Even though they were both jerks(the DM was in a power trip and OP was losing his temper a little too much), only the OP seemed to have improved his attitude any.
      There's this great line attributed to Buddha that goes;
      "What we are Today comes from our thoughts of Yesterday, and our Present thoughts build our Tomorrow: Our life is the Creation of our Mind."
      It's nice to see at least one of them taking this to heart and improving themselves....

    I honestly can't help it, it really just sounds like the dm was the bad guy in this part of the story. He didn't give him a fair chance from the beginning, didn't explain a thing to him even tho he's new and additionally shut him immediately down when he finally tried to fit in with the party and possibly learn. Sure the person sharing this might have been edgy during the time it was happening and 'that guy' but that doesn't justify his lack of care for the newbie. Additionally, the rule of starting 2 levels behind once joining an already started session doesn't make sense if you're going to just keep them always 2 levels behind even after they die, it not only makes encounters unfair for them but makes them useless, especially if you don't base the encounters around the party's average level but around the person with the highest level. At this point he should have just allowed him to go to the other campaign of wasting his time like that while hammering this idea of not being fun and it just being a hard difficult serious puzzle into his head.
    In short: Even if the person was the worst type of That Guy, it doesn't change the fact the dm was at least questionable in his fainess.
    Edit: Also, amazing video as per usual king.
    Edit2: I called it-

      I think this is a good story because you can have a bad DM and a “that guy”. The DM choose not the change and got kicked out, while the That Guy improved himself and came back to realize the shop appreciated him.

      @@lootgoblinmarketplace I completly agree, it shows that anyone can change for better when given the chance, all you have to do is give them that chance and give them a little push.

      @@zorgonvoir6896 its honestly hard to believe the OP was a "that guy" to a notable degree if they reflected on a situation like this (where they were legitimately targeted, disrespected, had their objections dismissed without a thought, etc.) that most "that guy"s would cling to for validation about how they are not the problem, and used the experience to try to be a better person. those two personality traits almost never meet, in my experience.

    • @zorgonvoir6896
      @zorgonvoir6896 11 місяців тому

      @@timothykessler5029 I honestly agree with you that he wasn't That Guy, in my opinion it really seems like he was just in a bad state of mind which he doesn't understand and he's trying to explain it to himself by calling his past self a That Guy. I personally have a part of my life that i don't understand and that was horrible and i simply explain it to myself as being a spoiled bully and even tho it doesn't fit all that much, that's what i call it and talk about it. Because sometimes you just can't explain what the hell happend and just give up, going the easy way about it and just calling it whatever.
      In short, he didn't understand what happend back there and since he was unable to understand it, he called it whatever instead of wasting time thinking about it.
      Cheers.

    I’m glad op changed their ways and full recognizes how they were before. Shows development self reflection. But the DM sucked. If they say they are a newer player you don’t just not explain anything. Either explain it to them beforehand or like over text or something OR explain it during the game. When I am teaching my family how to play a coop video game or a new card/board game, I start by explaining the stuff I can say that they will understand and then as things come up in game I’ll stop before we do anything and talk to them about it.
    Holding a players hand in any game can get annoying as an experienced player but it needs to be done for newer players. You have to slow down and take the time to walk them through things that may seem simple to you, but to them they don’t know what they are doing. When someone comes up in the game, like the snake in the story, as a dm you explain what CR means and all that. You don’t just let them figure it out by dying and tell them afterwards.
    An example of this for me is teaching my family how to play an expansion of Catan. I set up the board, I’ve read the instructions. We all know how to play the base game but any must know mechanics of the expansion I tell them before we start. Then during the game as things come up I will tell them. Like telling them that the “longest road bonus” is now the “longest trading routes and that settlements no longer stop connecting roads (Seafarers expansion)

      Yeah this is a situation where even if the player was a “that guy” the DM was too. Only one learned from their mistakes. A good DM is more than eager to help out a player learn the terms and not just berate them when they don’t know stuff like CR. In fact, if the player had come back and knew exactly what each CR rating would be, I bet the DM would call them a meta gamer, so it was a no win situation

    the worst player ive ever played with was myself
    in my second game a willy wonka esc one shot my brother was the dm and i played with his group as a rouge i almost got myself killed and did damage to the rest of the party by running into a room of bears screaming and i almost tpk'd the party by yelling right after a successful stealth check my brother had to give an npc advantage to calm down the stampede

      I’ll admit that when I started out there were times where I was the worst player at the table. The important thing is everyone can improve overtime and even if you are the “worst” player at a table sometimes that isn’t even bad.

    Greetings everybody! I'm the OP of this story, and I can't properly express just how thrilled I am to see this story expressed here by one of my favorite UA-camrs. It was a surprise, to say the least!
    I've been reading all of your comments, and thank you all for the support and criticisms! I know I was a bit edgy here, but I do hope you all are able to take something from this story, even if it is just a few minutes of entertainment. c:
    When I first wrote this story some time ago, I had considered actually including one of the worst stories I have to tell about myself--the Vampire Incident--but then realized that it would probably take a *loooooooong* time to relate those stories. Too long for one post, so I left it out. If you guys are interested in some of the stories I've been a part of *and* took part in, let me know! I have plenty to tell.

      I definitely saw a few questions asking how you were a that guy. Based on just this story alone, I can see how they were confused. I definitely figured it was a story for another time situation. Since this story was focused on your first and final experiences at a local game store. I’d be interested in hearing a bit about your unreformed antics.

    But you're not that guy at all. Unless there is a lot more detail you're not explaining, the DM in these stories don't know how to balance, makes his own rules and completely gas lights you, a new player, as well as other players at the table. He clearly had issues with you but that's his own person issue. The DM is just an ahole
