all this time i thought perspective grids were the boring math part of art i wanted to pretend didnt exist so i ignored it, but knowing it can come so naturally off of your pic's focal point, and that it's like secondary to composition, just changed the whole game for me
That kid is one lucky dude. The biggest aid to learning anything is having an attentive and knowledgeable mentor. The patience and care shown to this student will hopefully spur him on to want to discover more. I wish my teachers had been half as inspiring as Mr Johnson.
I'm stunned at the simplicity and grace you were able to explain this. Countless books and classes never gave me such an honest and massive "ah hah" moment as this short video. Thanks so much!
Finally a practical breakdown! You add *just* the right amount structure to intuition - too little is messy, too much is boring. Thank you for making this! ✌️
This is one of the best videos on how to setup and use dynamic 3 point perspectives online. No other resource that I can think of shows how to do it quite as easily or fluidly. The way you can split up the grid is something I saw and understood for the first time from your streams. Even though that info exists in books, it's far easier to understand when seeing it demoed. Great video. I feel like I have understood these concepts for a while but I still have a hard time narrowing down to the exact camera angle and focal length I want for a scene.
Thank you for putting this up! Perspective has been a huge hurdle for me, and I feel like you explained it in a way that it finally clicked in my brain.
8:31 There's a drafting tool called a "Point to Point" that can be used to draw grids in a similar manner traditionally (i.e. non-digital). I think DWJ used a version of that or a similar tool in the past.
this is excellent Daniel! ive been struggling with perspective for 40 years and with this quick video its a lot more clear to me how you pros approach it! also, i died a little inside when your student didnt know who Lee Weeks was! ive been a fan of his since his run on Daredevil in the early nineties.
Thanks so much. This definitely improved and sped up my workflow as making sure the perspective in what I’m drafting slows and sometimes derails my process. Cheers bro. Truly appreciated
Just such good video. Functional perspective done quickly and with room for your imagination to fill in the gaps is the best. This is an absolute gem of a video. I'll be trying that loose point to point idea to get things feeling real enough but not laborious. I always struggle with drawing longer lens shots and I think this will help the most. Wide angle always feels easier because the point are closer I guess
Thanks, this is great practical advice, you may not be a youtuber, but you got great stuff to share ! I just hope you do more exactly like this, no need for all the flashy intro, infographic etc...
i remember you saying you were planning this when you were just starting streaming some years ago lol, thank god you didnt abandoned it! thanks for taking your time to share this between your tight schedule! you friggin rock Dan the man!
this applies so well the concept that you need to treat every drawing like a portrait (this is more of a painters thing) but its so good. thank you very much
Whoa, this was really cool to watch. Thanks for sharing this, DeeDubs. I'm not an artist but a lot of these concepts are familiar from art classes I took in the past, just took a lot longer than 15 minutes to teach these!
1) So do you make new perspective grid for every panel in the comics? 2) do you need a new perspective grid for each robot body part? (Ie chest vs forearm vs a leg turned at a weird angle?) 3) I mostly get why one would use a 1 point perspective grid - for looking straight down or up. What determines using a 2, 3, 4 point or more perspective?
1. No, just when I need it which is not all the time 2. no way, that would be super stiff, gotta go with the flow most of the time 3. because it looks awesome!
Hrm... thoughts on listing your musical instruments on craigslist or fb market place? ya know... helps both sides? heh thought I'd give it a shot here.

I am going to be watching this on sporadic repeat for a while, I can tell. Probably the most liberating perspective strategy I've ever seen.

Oh my god yes! I never get to see live streams so I could never ask about the 10 point divider! Haven’t even finished the video but I hope it’s here!
HE TALKS ABOUT IT!
10 point divider is super helpful but not strictly necessary, just have to be able to do basic math, takes a bit longer, etc
This video has really helped in my struggles with perspective and backgrounds, thank you Daniel!
Transformers #3 was awesome thanks for creating such a beautiful world/story so far 🤝
One of the clearest explanations of perspective I've seen in a long time. Well done!
Thank you! That ten-point divider trick is a game changer!

Oh my gosh i have been struggling with perspective for the longest time and this helps so much, thank you!

Yay that is so cool, and super satisfying to see you do it
Thanks for making this video, it helps me better understand perspective now and how to used in doing art

Yes! Yes! One of the best explanations of perspective I’ve seen!!!
i remember you saying you were planning this when you were just starting streaming some years ago lol, thank god you didnt abandoned it! thanks for taking your time to share this between your tight schedule! you friggin rock Dan the man!
This was awesome to watch and I love the fluidity it allows in developing the composition of the scene. Thank you so much!
This is awesome :) Thanks for posting!
Fantastic breakdown
Dude. You are a wizard!!!
this applies so well the concept that you need to treat every drawing like a portrait (this is more of a painters thing) but its so good. thank you very much
This is super cool, thanks for the tip dude!
Years ago I had read an interview with Adam Hughes and he talked about the same thing it’s great seeing it in action
thank u for this maaan
Gday D-Dubs 🤘 you sir are a bloody legend 👍 thank you for sharing this 😁
Awesome and fun!❤
This was an awesome tutorial! Would you mind making more like this in the future and if so could you do one on making blood fx?
Thanks a lot for these videos Daniel💙 i appreciate a lot your director's cuts and all the insights
Thanks Dan War John
amazing tips aside, I'm just loving the image of optimus and the crew parked at the local grocer's
LETS GOOOO THIS IS AMAZING
YESSSS
Turned out great!
I finally get it. Thanks, dude.
Thanks dude❤
This was so freaking good, great stuff!

Very cool, I could understand and I have no formal education practicing art
Thanks! This helped me a lot. 👍🏻
God bless Lee Weeks fr
YYEAAAHHH LOVE THIS
That is really clever
wow!
Someone taught me the 10 point divider in high school so I could scale a small image to a size of a wall. I had no idea it even was until now!
1) So do you make new perspective grid for every panel in the comics?
2) do you need a new perspective grid for each robot body part? (Ie chest vs forearm vs a leg turned at a weird angle?)
3) I mostly get why one would use a 1 point perspective grid - for looking straight down or up. What determines using a 2, 3, 4 point or more perspective?
I second this question.... And I ultra- second the second question!
1. No, just when I need it which is not all the time
2. no way, that would be super stiff, gotta go with the flow most of the time
3. because it looks awesome!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing this. Do you do the same when you put you character first or do you start with the background ?
Hrm... thoughts on listing your musical instruments on craigslist or fb market place? ya know... helps both sides? heh thought I'd give it a shot here.
YEEAAAAAAH DANIEL WARREN VIDEO
Can I get a hell yeah!
