    holy crap.... 2:31 nearly brought me to tears 😯 that is EXACTLY when my troubles started. All in an effort to shave the last few strokes off. This, then "new concept" legit robbed me of a golf career.
    I was that guy who's tv was stuck on tgc every day. I still have boxes & boxes of magazines from 1/2 price books.
    These last 90 days have truly hurt as i learn that i was so close then steered wrong, now im learning just how athletic i naturally did swing the club.

    OMG!!! This is theee best description of the downswing EVER!!! The comment "You could eat a sandwich..you have so much time to come into the ball",, I just experienced it for the FIRST TIME!! As a senior golfer,72, it is so BODY FRIENDLY!! Is there a followup video and how to take this step drill to the actual set up in the swing when your feet are at address!! Thakyou you guys so much! I live in Seattle and am thinking of flying down to spend time with the both of you!! I have been a very "mechanical/deliberate" swing of the golf club for years! No fun at all! I want to be an athlete when I play!! The Athletic in AMG really "peaked my interest initially!! You guys are AS ADVERTISED!!

    You guys are the new golf rock stars on youtube. You're teaching is reinforced and validated with the computer modeling. That has detail the eye can't see. I would like to see videos on: 1. staying in finish balance with a fast swing and 2. what to do with the club in the follow through ... straight arms or wrap around your neck. Thank you. Keep up the great content.

    You guys are the best.. you are the ONLY golf instruction I follow after going down rabbit holes for 10 years.
    I have one question where I am
    Confused. If we compare this to the “magic move it seems that this asks to shift weight before finishing the back swing and the magic move want more of a shift one the backswing is completed.. I am having trouble understanding which to follow and mixing in the “shallow move” by dropping the arms and straightening them seems to be more difficult once weight is transferred. Any help would be appreciated.
    Ps to everyone out there these guys will drop strokes off your game 💯

    1. Short game & putting.
    2. Golf equipment in terms of how it can or cannot affect the swing or ball flight. Eg draw/fade bias, open/closed face club heads, low/high bend point, heavy/light shafts.

    That darn Hogan book and the video where he stipulated the hip rotation to begin the "downswing" was tragic for golf. Chased that bad idea for too long myself. I feel your pain Sean.
    Good simple drills here.
    You know, conceptually I don't see the motion as two parted with "backswing" and "downswing" any longer. My hunch is that very conceptualization is the root cause of sequence problems. The faulty "plane"idea dovetailed so devestatingy well with backswing/downswing bad conceptualization.
    I see it now as a continuous loop. Which oddly, when Hogan talked about the "plane shift, he was really describing a continuous loop. Words and concepts matter to how our body responds. Really good ideas and drills here guys.

      I can't recall ever using those terms in a lesson. We see attempted application of both, especially, external ruin a lot of swings. You're right, many golfers have limited range but it's not necessary to shallow and plane the club coming down. We will be covering this soon!

    Question: Is this move similar to a baseball player stepping into a hit? When I do the drill where I move the left foot, it almost feels like I’m trying to hit a baseball.

  • @ianblackburn5935
    @ianblackburn5935 5 років тому +1

    So regardless I guess the left (lead) foot ‘starts’ the backswing. Which in turn I guess supports that kinematic sequence foot, hip, shoulder, arms, wrist, club head (I think, no expert). My mate dies the left foot thing in actual shots and doesn’t really realise it (he played a lot of cricket when younger). He tends to hit a pure iron and a beefy drive too! I need to use this practice as I fell into that ‘fire hips’ trap and for me = slice mainly due to early extension (some terrible strikes too, didn’t stand a chance) 😂

  • @storieswithaly1247
    @storieswithaly1247 5 років тому +1

    I presume this is not the same for the driver for example as one puts more weight and tilt on the back foot in order to hit up rather than down. If so what is the process for say a hybrid - more like an iron? And fairway wood?

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  5 років тому

      This is the same for driver and all clubs in the bag. You don't need to (or want to) move weight back in order to hit up on it. We have a ton of swings where the angle of attack is positive while the pressure weight is forward👍

    Another great concept. However, with motor learning I think you should ingrain first the sequence but then when playing let your instinct take over, hoping the sequence has been ingrained. Thinking of sequence when playing will mess with the fluidity of the swing. What will be a good swing thought to trigger the proper sequence as above? Throwing a ball or a baseball swing? or something else? Thanks for the video.

  • @openminded1923
    @openminded1923 5 років тому +1

    Just for clarity: so there are no real separation between hip and upper body from the top of the downswing and down through impact? I must admit that I feel there are some separation when I swing the best. When I turn the hip and the shoulders follow I usually hit a weak fade/slice.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  5 років тому

      For reference, it takes 1/10 second to blink. The time between hips then torso takes is WAY less than that.

  • @mrjim0918

    Great video. I understand the drill. Is the intent that you incorporate this into your swing without thinking about it? When I think about shifting to the front foot at left arm parallel it throws my timing off.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  5 років тому

      I would say the intent of every drill is to learn the movement well enough so you don't have to think about it while playing. That drill is great at exposing a timing issue. It's designed to change your timing for the better.

    Bad thing about learning the swing is we learn it in pieces and are trying to get those pieces in the right positions all the time so are thoughts are segmented when the golf swing is a very fluid movement from start to finish. We have to learn the pieces first which causes tension before our mechanics are sound enough to trust it to the point where we can learn our own rhythm and make it fluid.

    Thanks for a great video on a topic on which I struggle…but just to be clear: I understand that I need to recenter my pelvis forward during my drift/fall in the latter part of the backswing in terms of movement to the left but it’s less clear in terms of weight shift/pressure. When do I put the majority (50% plus) of my weight on my left foot--in between left arm parallel and the top of backswing, right at the top, or at the beginning of the downswing? I struggle getting enough weight on my target side but lately I’ve been having more success shifting the majority of my weight left just before completing my shoulder rotation at the top. Is this optimal? Thanks again.

      they have time to hit millions of golf balls. Kutchar hits it really short for his size. And Ricky goes from laid off to steep in transition (not something I would recommend ) Obviously there are many ways to do it but not all are optimal especially if you don't have time to play golf full time :) I

    5:30 “Good kinematic sequence is a RESULT”
    Isn’t pressure shift also a result of athletic movement? You can also go down a rabbit hole of manufacturing the “optimal” pressure trace.

    • @Jonny4fingers
      @Jonny4fingers 5 років тому +1

      Was thinking the same. There is a shift right to start the backswing but the weight of the arms swinging right causes the pressure shift right. Then as the rise above left arm parallel their weight will cause the pressure plate to show a pressure shift left. But that’s not the player shifting left at left arm parallel in the back swing. From the top the pressure is left and they weight the front leg causing further shift left. The pressure plate data is good but could be misinterpreted.

  • @jamesandresen4927
    @jamesandresen4927 4 роки тому

    I can see how important it is to have the majority of weight on the left side at impact. Just wondering if starting at say 60% weight on the left and just leaving it there in the backswing and adding more during the downswing wouldn't be easier? I'm guessing there's a good reason not to do that, what would that reason be?

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  4 роки тому

      Speed/distance or lack of it if you do that. Try it throwing a ball and see if you can throw it as far staying on your left side as you can making a normal motion.

    I think firing the hips is really a key-element just like in a tennis serve, but but the trouble starts, when they fire too late, ie. after the top.
    Some of the Asian pros on tour have this ”take the club back and stop”-kind of swing, but their athlesism allows them to start from a ful stop in perfect sync.

    Drills are drills. You can't have a swing thought on the course when your trying to move your hips or body a certain way. Think about it, could you blink your eyes a certain way when your in the process of blinking? The golf swing only takes 1.5 seconds.

      The swing is only about 1 second from address to impact.

    I have watched many of your videos and think they are great. However, there is something missing or left out here that in my case is a major problem.
    Just turned 79. Been playing golf 58 years, have a 17 handicap. Working hard with the pro I go to on getting my downswing correct while we are also testing new irons. Have played forged blades all my life but now need more distance as my 7-iron, which 10 years ago was my 150 yard carry club is now my 130-135 yard carry club.
    My problem, which I am embarrassed to see when filmed by my pro, is that, while make a full should turn on the backswing, and make the leftward movement you are describing here, on the downswing I don't rotate my midsection, meaning shoulders, torso and hips, enough. The result is that I come down from the inside to out and make a very "hand-sy" swing with a lot of arm extension. (I have been swinging with this handsy motion for decades.) I do make a good turn, thanks to one of your videos, moving the club together with my shoulders and not folding my arms across my chest. I also now get the shaft on plane, thanks to another of your videos, with my right wrist in extension and left wrist in flexion or straight. Several years ago I unconsciously had a tendency to cup my left wrist, getting the shaft off plane on the backswing so that it was too vertical.
    Just yesterday, my pro said that this exaggerated arm extension and overly active hand action is how I prevent the ball from going straight and right of the target line, and keep it more to the left on line to the target. (It can also lead to big hook draws.) He said we could see from the video that one problem is I have moved my hips so far to the left (even though my head and chest are still over the ball) that I have blocked myself from a proper rotation where my belt buckle and chest will be facing the target. Instead, my belt buckle has moved just a little to the left and my chest is still pretty much facing where the ball was on the tee. He wants me to keep my weight more on the right and to start rotating with that hip and leg, allowing my left side hip to rotate freely toward the target. (I think one of your videos also showed that pros rotate the hips by "pulling" the left buttock back rather than pushing the right buttock forward toward the ball.) He also wants me to get my right elbow coming down closer to my right hip so that I will swing through where the ball is without so much excessive hand action and early arm extension. Club speed will come from that correct body rotation. He is not talking about firing the hips first, then the chest and shoulders. They will work together at basically the same time, just as your video discusses. But my issue is that I need to get that rotation.
    Now, in your video, as I watch Shaun swing, he does exactly what my pro is talking about. Even though this is a half swing, his right shoulder comes in low so his right elbow is close to his right hip, and his belt buckle and his chest have rotated completely toward the target. Perfect. Lots of club speed. I understand that your video was about the bad advice to start the downswing by "firing" the hips first and then rotating the shoulders and arms. Totally agree. But for many of us duffers, especially older, heavier, thicker ones like me, getting the whole package rotating, hips, chest and shoulders together so that at the end they face the target, is a major issue.
    Sorry if this is too long. But I go into that much detail only because I really, really respect and like your videos, the best out there.

      That all sounds like good advice you're and you guys sound like you're working on the correct things. If I understood correctly, you've got too much hip slide while the upper body stays back. If that's correct, then you absolutely should address that because that is just about a guarantee that you'll limit your ability to rotate well through the shot. Sounds like you're working with a good pro to help you get some more pop in the bat😊

      haha, lots of allergic reactions out there when you combine the words "arms" with "downswing"😄

    I guarantee 90% of golfers who have a problem rotating are getting their right elbow stuck. It instantly stopped my ability to rotate because my arms/clubs were getting stuck and stopped my ability to turn.
