      I’ve been living in the UK since the age of 10 and I’m now 21. I was thinking of moving to Turkey to teach English but I’ve read on so many different forums that English teachers in Turkey are paid poorly, mistreated and overworked. Is this an exaggeration or is there some truth to this?
      Thanks.

      @@dansaid443 Yeah guess its true Dan. Im from Turkey and i met many English teachers from abroad like Spain, England, USA etc etc. They were not so happy. Actually the situations youre talking about depends on the school you work or the city you live in. But mostly, Turkey is a country where civil and human rights are pretty poor. But it can be a good experience my friend. Turkey is a weird country ngl. Hit me up when you decide to come here:):)

    Hey! Thank you for that.
    I'm currently at university in Brazil and I have been studying English since I was ten. I have been working as an English teacher for 3 years now, and everyone always says I have what it takes to be a successful teacher. My dream has always been to live abroad, I dream about Europe since I was a little girl, and it would be the best realization living there one day. I have chosen this profession with all my heart. However, it is so overwhelming and hard to teach in other countries. I don't have the citizenship or the UE passport. I'm only 21 years old and I hope one day I can achieve my goals. I will come back to this comment 5 years from now and tell you I did it.
    I'll make you proud, future me, no matter what it takes.

For weeks now I had been making researches about schools that hire non native English speaker in South Korea and Taiwan, but one of the prerequisites is that one must be a native speaker to teach there. It's been really discouraging. I am Nigerian and I obtained my Masters degree TCSOL from China, so I know China definitely does not hire non native Speakers of English to teach English. I am currently working on enrolling for TESOL/TEFL.

    I'm French native from my bilingual Cameroon, but I realised my English level is far better than some English natives. I've been teaching both French and English as second languages. I have more than 10 years teaching experience but I've a 6.5 on IELTS just because of issues with computer and I didn't have time to finish my task.
    So I like your vision on changing mentalities. English or French native requirement as job qualification is quite nonsense!!!!
    Right now I am preparing to go to Poland for a Masters program to Teach English Language to Young Learners , alongside taking the CELTA ,and I really pray this requirement will not be an obstacle on the field while seeking for language teaching job.

    I'm not a native speaker but I'm from a country who's official and educational language is English. I've spoken English since I uttered my first word as a toddler. My college education was obtained from a Native English Speaking Country. I lived most of my life in a Native English Speaking Country. To crown it all, I speak English better than most native speakers that I came across. Total number of years living in a Ntive English Speaking country is 27.5 years to be exact
    That being said, I want anyone in the English Education System who's making this distinction between native and non native speakers, to respond and proof to me, why they think I'm not qualified to teach English, just because of where I was born.

    I couldn't agree more. Many schools in different countries focus so much on hiring native speakers that don't even care much about those teachers' qualifications, as long as they're native speakers and white. Yeah, they do request a degree and a BASIC TEFL course for visa application, but any degree (in China for example) is acceptable. That's ridiculous! People who have no didactics at all and know very little about teaching methodologies, theories, etc; are welcomed like a superstar. 🙄 Whilst there are non-native teachers who've studied English and managed to master the language successfully way more than lots of those native inexperienced teachers, besides having a BA in Education or Languages plus a post-graduation specialization in the ESL or Education field. It's not fair at all.

      I teach in school in the UK and work with UK born English native teachers. Lots of them don't have a clue about grammar or how to teach it. They need to goole past forms of irregular verbs to apply them in the sentences, for example. What is definitely our advantage as foreigners, is the fact we have a sound grammatical knowledge to build on and develop our second language,helping new learners better understand the process of the second language acquisition at the same time. I personally know non native speakers who teach English in Language schools in the UK. Like Marek said, they are highly appreciated for their knowledge and experience. Thank you for the video.

      Requirements for teaching English in China are vague and often don't make sense. Based on my experience as an English teacher here they are as follows: if you are a native speaker and have a degree, you qualify to teach here. If you are a non native speaker then you need to have a degree from an English speaking country. Of course, it very much depends on other factors such as employer, demand and supply, etc. I am not saying I hold the absolute truth but that's what I've been told and have seen in many job adverts before I came here. But China is a huge country with plenty of opportunities so you can always try out your luck. :)

    Firts of all thanks for sharing this video and greetings from Mexico. I can't open the link for the e-book TEFL jobs as a non-native speaker you uploaded. I tried using two different browsers already. Do you know what might be the problem? It shows a lock icon next to the web address after I copy and paste it in my browser.

      Isn't it interesting how they label South Africa as native speaker, when in reality South Africa is a non native speaker, because like Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Ghana, Botswana, Liberia and Gambia, South Africa is a country with its own language but uses English as both its educational and official languages. The people making this distinction between native and non native speakers are doing it based not being well informed

    The language of instruction in school in my country is English from kindergarten to university since we are a former British colony,, with a degree I should be held to the same standard as a native speaker but am not white so...natives have good pronunciation but that's all...

    How do you think I need master degree of one year TEFL is enough to find a job in Germany? I have teacher bachelor degree and 5 years of teaching experience

  • @EnjoySynthSounds

    It's the legal requirements countries set as to who and who cannot teach. The best thing a non native can do is build up his resume, get into a country with less strict gent rules and build up a solid foundation of teaching experience. Build up skills in understanding colloquialisms, formal and informal, cultural knowledge of English speaking countries and so forth. You need to think like a native speaker if you want to teach as a native speaker. Personally I would not wish my kids to be taught by a non native, even if they have a celta or some other bs certificate. The accent of many non speakers is bad to be fair. I know of Russians with strong accents fired on the spot. When I learn Geman for example I imitate the accept. I dont care if I dont know 20000 verbs, I focus on mastering the fundamentals to a key.
    Accent
    Intonation
    Colloquial understanding
    3 key skills.

    dude you can tell them as much as you want why it's inappropriate to hire native speakers only. But. The students only want native English speakers. That's the only thing that sells. Native Speaker vs A VERY experienced, certified non-native - clients will choose Native Speakers. That's the reality of the market.

    • @merimaroutian
      @merimaroutian 3 роки тому

      why is that, though? because people are not informed that native speaker ads might promote people who simply speak a language, most likely at a very low or standard level. Most schools who say they have mother tongue teachers hide their incompetence at selecting skilled teachers using their brand name, and this goes on and on. We need to spread the awareness that this is happening.

    • @OxysLokiMoros
      @OxysLokiMoros 2 роки тому +2

      But it sucks if you can´t teach english in South Korea or Taiwan just because it isn´t your mothertongue. Imagine you are from Sweden, your english is close to perfect, you are also fluent in chinese and korean but they prefer a guy from Texas who only speakt english...
