I love driving thru the countryside looking at the old barns. It just amazes me how they built such huge structures before the large construction vehicles came into existence. I recently found your channel and have been binge watching from the first video. But I decided as you post new videos I will watch them right away. I have no idea why some are criticizing you. You are a hard working family and deserve praise not criticisms. Some people are miserable and just want to make others miserable too I guess.
I dont have any advice but i want to say you are doing a damn good job! I wish I was close enough to offer a helping hand for labor or assist in any way i could. It looks like a long job with a lot of work and research but i think you are going to be happy with your results. The barn is in good hands❤
Just here to say you ROCK! Keep it up. I love that you have time on your side to think through just a small section of the barn this year. We are rooting for you! Time (….and overwintering) will be a valuable test to confirm how effective your masonry skills are!
I just found your channel and I love what you guys are doing I love the old barns and you are100% right most people just Tear them down and build a new one just try to get it full and do what you are doing it doesn't matter if it's not a professional job it's you are trying to save it you guys are doing a great job keep them videos coming and I will watch them from front to end and give them a👍👍🇺🇸
I’m so excited to watch you save your barn. I’m in Wisconsin and my dad has a similar barn, but the foundation is solid. The upstairs is another story. He saved his barn by putting up metal for the roof and side. The beans are soo full of powder post beetles etc. He farmed until 10 years ago. It’s going to be so sad to see this part of history die. Keep up the good work. I’m cheering you on from the fox valley!!
Your pointing looks fantastic. I have never seen other videos explaining the use of the brush to make sure the mortar is sealed around the stones before.
I used an air chisel when I went at the field stone foundation. I was missing large sections of my foundation as well. You can have some stones come out and it won't make the whole wall collapse. Good luck!
Thanks so much for sharing this information and process. We are in a very similar situation with our barn in central Michigan and I am actually planning to get working on it this fall as well.
Looking to do the foundation on my house. Unfortunately, it is made up of WAY more mortar and smaller rocks. Made a purchase from limeworks and have been asking them a ton of questions to fill in the gaps all the youtube videos have left me with. That said, watching you do yours is extremely helpful in both seeing it from another person who is new to it as well as giving a bit of confidence boost. Thank you!
@jenniferg1482 First step is to find out if you have any water or drainage issues and address that first. Roof, gutters, grading away from the barn, etc. As far as repointing, prioritize doorways, windows, and corners that need work because they will be the first areas to collapse. Then just take it one section at a time. It's a lot of work, but worth it!
My husband saw me watching your video tonight and he asked if that is the place we got the chickens! I said, YES!! I shared the video with him and he said, while it is not overly enjoyable a needle gun may be helpful - he shared this video with me ua-cam.com/video/2Nm7LzTcpUY/v-deo.html but said he hasn't researched the model to know if it is good. I'm so glad you are trying to preserve the barn!
Thank you! Thankfully the area we are working on right now is breaking up easy, but I'm putting that tool on my list for the rest of the barn. Right now the kids are working at it with safety glasses and chisels singing "Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work we go!" 🤣

Thank you for watching and good luck with your project!
Where did you source your lime mortar mix? I have a barn wall rebuild on the horizon myself.
I was able to find the lime at Menards. (Our local hardware store didn't have any.)

The person who did the "sloppier mortar work" on the outside, watching this like😮😢
