Pass the salt, PLEASE. Moral of the story: In this house parents don't have manners and haven't taught their kids how to behave in dining table. He didn't say please in the end.
Laughed so hard I woke up a sleeping child. So he watched it, too! Epic. Emmy to the lovely actress that played the mom for best non-verbal performance!
I feel like the video would have been better if the dad or mom were actively trying to engage the kids in conversation while being ignored. "So how was school today?" *no response* "You know your mother and I were talking/thinking about blah blah blah whatever" *no attention* etc. As it stands, I really can't fault the kids for checking on a text messages that could have been about anything from some girl at school's butt to a reminder about tomorrow's homework assignment. I still remember a time when some complete stranger felt the need to correct me for obsessively checking my phone at a restaurant while I was waiting to hear back from my mother about a "growth" she had gone to see the doctor about (it was nothing thank goodness). Oh thank you strange lady, it's so nice to know that you think of my behavior as rude while my actual dinner companions couldn't care less. Even if it isn't an important thing, I don't expect people to be engaged in the conversation the entire time. Sometimes there are lulls, sometimes people are talking about things that don't involve you, it's natural for them to distract themselves with something else from time to time. If they didn't have their phones they'd be twiddling their thumbs, doodling on a napkin, and/or daydreaming. After all, no one ever looked at a dad reading the morning paper at the breakfast table and said "Guhh, the printing press is destroying relationships and our society!!" Not that this video is engaging in such hyperbole, but in many places (the comments here included) that is where this discussion goes.
Duston McCreary Engaging someone in a conversation beforehand grabs attention and keeps someone from being able to whip out their phone and mess with it unless they're just THAT rude or if they want to let you know that they hate you.
lightsoul007 These kids are human beings, not fucking birds. They should be fully capable of keeping attention themselves. I'm beginning to feel the suspicion that you around 12 years old.
Duston McCreary Keep attention to what, exactly? How many times do I have to explain that there was nothing going on even after they started messing with their phones? Do you honestly just expect people to watch you chew your food on the off chance that you might start talking to them? I don't know what you're not getting about all this. I am beginning to feel that you are a goat.
Matthew, you and your family, along with the other actors and crew, did a wonderful job on this; and, it feels SO real. It's amazing how both hilarious and dead serious it is, all at the same time! I hope this gets posted all over the Internet.
I don't mind the idea of not texting at the table. However, in the defense of the sons... there was *no* family discussions or socializing. Just silent awkward eating. If that is the case, why even both with family dinners?
Matthew, I want to thank you for your video. Nicely done. Tell your mom and dad they did a nice job. I went to school with your dad in 1976-1978, when the school was NWC in Roseville.
Meh, my sister, her husband, and I spent five hours in the kitchen cooking dinner. Laughing, talking, having a good time, and texting. At the table our mother was texting us pictures of what she was eating on the other side of the country and we were texting her back. I don't think it took anything away from this holiday, everyone was happy aside from one of my nieces. She was only unhappy cause all the food was icky and didn't want to try any of it.
Depends on how you do it. And after all, if it works for you guys, go for it. I'm so old fashioned that I don't have an smart phone. My sister ofcourse has one and I was watching a movie with her, and you know what she did instead of watching? Yep, she was just playing with her phone. :D
Richard Gray Yes, simmering a gravy for over an hours needs your full attention the whole time. Some with baking mac and cheese, totally got to watch that for the twenty minutes it bakes. A lot of foods (especially thanksgiving foods) don't need you full attention all the way through.
At one point, my step daughter and step son, and my sister in-law were all on their cell phones during supper time. I mean like this video is ...right through supper times feeding your face time. So to add to the ignorance of tuning out of the present situation, I went out an got a great big news paper and opened it up as big and as wide as it could be right there at the table. The sad thing is...none of them even noticed. I own not a cell phone ..nor ever will. I live in the moment with the people that matter the most to me....when you talk to me, you have my undivided attention. Please give me the same respect. I don't allow cell phones at my dinner table now.
Maybe they didn't mind you reading your newspaper? Were any of you actually talking to each other during that time? It's perfectly normal to engage your mind in other things when you're eating.
lightsoul007 Who said he was reading his newspaper, sunshine? Know what? Maybe you're right. Maybe those idiot kids don't have anything worth verbalizing anyway. Kept texting...rather silence than stupid drivel from morons.
Michael White ...and you wonder why young people don't want to talk to you? :-/ Also: "So to add to the ignorance of tuning out of the present situation, I went out an got a great big news paper and opened it up as big and as wide as it could be right there at the table. " The original poster said they were reading it.
I don't know, smartass...why don't you ask my two adult, married and responsible sons (who I speak to...by telephone... every week or so) and my five grandchildren. : )
funny, but so true for people of all ages at the table. So fortunate to have parents and children, so many people have loved and lost theirs. Please enjoy each other while they are around.
From and 18 year olds point of view: If this ever happened in my house with my folks...my parents would take my phone and I would probably never see it again. I just got it this year, and I'm not attached to it at all. I'd rather talk to my folks during dinner. I mean we spend most of our time doing our own thing. You'd think people could spend an HOUR at least to enjoy a good meal in the company of their family? Nooo because we're all so damn busy with our lives and we're all so important. When I was the only kid without a phone in my friend group, I found it irritating and rude when my friends pulled up a game while someone else was talking. We've become so connected through technology that we've lost real connection and interaction. I miss when my friends and I would just go out for a day and walk around town doing nothing but spending time together. Having a phone has its perks. I'm away at university so I can call my family and get in contact with them whenever I like. I can feel a little calmer when I'm travelling on my own because I know if I get lost or something goes wrong, my dad's one phone call away. I'm able to keep in touch with the people who matter the most and call them on their birthdays instead stupid facebook birthday stuff. My friends wanted me to get a cell for years so that they could stay in touch with me, and it seems like I'm the only person making an effort to even talk to anyone. To be honest, I've given up. I'd rather just see everyone during Christmas break and try and meet up. If they don't want to that's cool because people grow up and they slowly go their separate ways as they meet new people and build relationships. I just hope that those relationships aren't going to be all technology based. :( People need one another. Anyone who doesn't think so is obviously very stubborn.
SilenceiztheonlyWord MY Parents would NEVER Take my Phone because they respect MY STUFF! They probably ASK me, an then i put my mobile away for eating or talking or whatever. Sry fo my english - no native speaker.
Soooo true.. we argued about this several times.. Now the children know that their use of mobiles (especially) during dinner isn't welcome anymore.. And it worked! Greetings from the Netherlands!!

Parents, or family, don't need to be formal.
I would have text them to pass the salt.

I'll pass on the word! haha! Glad you liked it!
OH MY GOSH THAT IS SO FUNNY I'M LAUGHING SO HARD!
Maria Welter Thanks for the encouragement!! Makes my day to know this created a few laughs! :)
Your welcome :)
The passive-aggressiveness is strong in this video.
Just wanted to thank you all for over 5,000,000 views! It's truly exciting and humbling to see how far of a reach this video has had.

People have to want a conversation in order to be engaged in one. Shutting yourself off into your phone tells people "fuck off, I'm texting."
Duston McCreary Engaging someone in a conversation beforehand grabs attention and keeps someone from being able to whip out their phone and mess with it unless they're just THAT rude or if they want to let you know that they hate you.

Spiffleh Very True! It’s so annoying/aggravating when no one wants to talk!
If the dad can pull out a typewriter from thin air I'm pretty sure he can reach for the salt himself.
I thought he's gonna type "PASS THE SALT" and deliver the message. xD
Matthew, I want to thank you for your video. Nicely done. Tell your mom and dad they did a nice job. I went to school with your dad in 1976-1978, when the school was NWC in Roseville.
Never allow the phone to interrupt time with family, lovers and whatnot. Remember: It is there for YOUR convenience, not the caller's.
The father has got a lesson to learn, and that's to use his MANNERS!
If you look really closely, you can tell this was staged.
Obviously.
Duston McCreary No, what's obvious is that CrazyIvan was making a joke. You're clueless, pal.
Duston McCreary
That was a joke.
Duston McCreary
Could you write me please, what dad say?
Bowl of Tofu thd typewriter is slso fake if u look closely
even caveman are more social then a smartphone addict

He really knows how it is these day. Really like what he did and woke up the boys. I really liked it when the salt was passed.
I want my 101 seconds back
91 seconds ??
Totally awesome!! Truly fantastically on point on ALL levels; a pleasure to see. Thank you, I'm a bit calmer and certainly happier :--)
Terrific, thank you. Manners, consideration, communication, mutual respect, etc. etc. etc. Well done.

LOVE IT!
Well played.
Robert De Niro would play this part so well, can see his face. Credit to the write and all actors though, still amazing!
Brilliant. Some people that I know can't put their phones down for a second and ignore those around them
