Volkswagen Golf R MK6 vs Volkswagen Golf R32 MK5 | The demise of VW?

  • In this video, I review a Volkswagen Golf R MK6 against my Volkswagen Golf R32 MK5. Both cars are built on the same platform but for some reason, VW thought the MK6 was the perfect time to kill off the legendary VR6. Question is should they have? And also, is the MK6R a better car than the R32?

    The mk6 R is a really good car looks good you can see the direction vw was going with emissions, fuel economy & car tax etc
    But the R32 is a beast out of the factory

    Thanks Mizan. I had been waiting a while for a video comparing the Mk5 R32 & the Mk6R. I had thought about putting one together myself as I own both cars here in Australia but Im better at watching UA-cam than delivering content 😆
    I have had my Mk6 for just over 3 years & loved it. I really enjoy that like the R32 & unlike the Mk7 onwards it is a rare car especially in 3 door form & I believe as time goes on it will have its day in the sun as the first of the inline Turbo 4 R's. It came to me standard as a 3 door with low kms & DSG & I very quickly realised its limitations & had a Racinglines Stage 1 tune & DSG tune done & it made it the car it should have been. It's much, much better than the standard version & I never imagined I would sell it.
    I then I bought a Mk5 R32 with a manual gearbox & a modest tune & now the Mk6 is on the market! Its a great car but I just can't get past the solid feel & that beautiful exhaust note of the R32 that makes me smile even on a bad day. You just can't help but feel good driving it. Ive watched others drive your R32 & almost immediately they begin to smile & you quickly enough see that speed is not everything its just another component.
    I largely agree with you assessment of the 2 cars & feel that VW really missed a trick when they choose to make the Mk6 a 4 cylinder. It should have been what it was meant to be & that is a prestigious, top of the line, fire breathing 220kw (295hp) N/A 3.6 litre V6 with a note to remember & the status befitting the marque that such an engine holds. They most certainly could have improved the emissions & geared correctly the economy especially on the freeway & the Mk7 onwards could have as you said been smaller capacity V6's with I believe supercharging so as not to dilute the exhaust note. What a shame.
    Sorry for the essay but like you Mizan I am now very much in love with my R32 & believe me its going nowhere. I had to quiet mine down (it was 107 db 😊) but now has a resonator delete & has a more bass note. Its awesome! Thanks for the content. I really enjoy your work & the perspectives of the guys you ride along with.

    It really is such a shame on VW’s part for not continuing with the VR lumps in R models. Why on earth didn’t they continue such a special & characterful power plant when there’s arguably even more potential once forced induction comes into play… what’s even more crazy is in the Chinese market you can get the teramount with a 2.5L VR6!! The first factory turbocharged VR6 lump and they put it in that? 🤦‍♂️ if only VW created for the MK6,7 & 8 a 2.5L turbocharged 350 / 400 bhp stock VR6 hot hatch what an amazing thing that would be.

    Will someone help me here. What does Omar mean by r32 isn't fast? I own 1 I can flat out 270 on speedo which is 250 on gps. The golf 6 and 7r still do the same 269 on speedo which is same 250 on gps. R32s are non turbo charged and those are more durable compared to turbo which blow out time to time. I can't trade in for a MK 6 just for extra 13 kw and in return lose out 2 more cylinders and that beautiful sound. For me I don't need to go 300 km/h to enjoy the vehicle you either risk taking your own life and let your family suffer or risk getting tickets. I should enjoy the car by it's natural sound and believe me the r32 is more fun on the road than the 6, 7 and 8r. The later are so quiet on the road and playing fake sounds through the speakers. We can't compare 3.2 l to milk and juice. My only next upgrade now is to get a pick up truck. There's no other golf r that will excite me unless they bring back the v6.

    • @CarNitty
      @CarNitty  8 місяців тому

      The 6R has tuning capability and he will be exploring that in the future but with the R32, it's limited due to it being NA. The R32 isn't a fast car by modern standards unfortunately but the noise is unmatched!

    • @calvinsinvula1731
      @calvinsinvula1731 8 місяців тому +1

      @@CarNitty let us talk stock before tuning. How is the r32 slow? From a ditch yes it's a second slower but is the golf 6 r top speed higher than that of the r32? The golf 8r with performance pack is a game changer that does 270 on gps. As for the 7, 6 and r32 they have the same top speed. But yes r32 is slower to 60. If you talk about tuning don't forget the r32 can gain around 800 hp if turbo charged and well programmed. Those 2 litre milk and juice you can't gain more than that.

    • @CarNitty
      @CarNitty  8 місяців тому

      You're looking at the fact the MK5 and MK6 from factory are very similar numbers which is correct.
      However, tuning an NA car gets you around 10-15BHP and is not cost effective after paying for the map.
      With a turbocharged car, you're getting gains of 40/60BHP per turbo on a map and it's very affordable to go stage 2+ and have over a 100-130BHP than when it left the factory and that's where the MK6 shines

    • @calvinsinvula1731
      @calvinsinvula1731 8 місяців тому

      @@CarNitty but I told you and I'm telling you again that the r32 has a turbo kit available on sale if you talk about tuning and this is the part you do not want to hear. I watched a turbo charged r32 smoke an audi rs6 and a porche 911. It's natural yes but it's turbo is available or you can build it. Watch the following link to the end. It's an r32 that been tuned in South Africa pumping out 1000 hp and does quarter mile in 10 seconds flat. ua-cam.com/video/d1qV-84H6zI/v-deo.htmlsi=eJdB1BRXyZqg4Kxv

    @mattsgaragex 8 місяців тому

    Biased here but YES the VR engines should have been kept. Pop a turbo on it and tune for efficiency etc but I suppose at the end of the day VW are a business and if they can what they need out of the 2.0T for performance I do get it... however VW have made some interesting engines and their USP has been putting those engines in the "car of the people" accessible by all poeple.

    I own an APR k04 MK6 GTI with DSG and an mk6 Golf R. I've owned 2 Supercharged Corvettes, a cammed Mustang GT, a streetport FD3S, SR20 S13 coupe, AP1 S2k, NB Miata, and an AE86 hatch GT-S. The VR6 is a cool engine, and it sounds cool. But it's an out-dated design that is heavy, and will require more room in the engine bay when you start adding boost. Yes the mk6 R's 4cyl doesn't sound as good, and without a tune, the EA113 is very boring. It isn't the most fuel efficient either(my GTI with the EA888 gets about 15% better fuel economy).
    I'd much rather have a DAZA swap in a Golf, over the VR6. It's far lighter and it's sound is also as unique(greater in my personal opinion) while being more fuel efficient than the VR6.
    Mk6 and mk5 are my most favorite generations of Golfs. Love them both and would take both over any other generation in a heartbeat. Just stating my personal preferences with my car background over 25 years.

    • @CarNitty
      @CarNitty  7 місяців тому +1

      Agree with everything you've said but it would've been nice if the VR6 could've been downsided in terms of displacement and turbocharged as this was the staple VW engine

    • @JustinStrife
      @JustinStrife 6 місяців тому

      @@CarNitty Displacement still won't equate to smaller physical size, or lighter weight though.
      The EPA is against our hobby regardless. The Governments around the world want to do away with ICE so all we can do is enjoy what we have while we can. I'll be damned if I go to an all electric car for my hobby. There's no soul there. Not like what we have now.

    • @CarNitty
      @CarNitty  6 місяців тому +1

      @JustinStrife I think any 6 pot would weigh quite a bit but by downsizing the engine got emissions and adding a turbocharger for power and efficiency, I think the VR6 should've existed on the Golf Rs for at least a few more generations

    • @JustinStrife
      @JustinStrife 6 місяців тому

      @@CarNitty The VR6 is not cheap to boost. The R32 is already nose heavy because of the VR6. Adding boost just makes it more so. And even lowering displacement, won't necessarily increase fuel mileage and lower emissions. Especially with an older design. Most manufacturers of performance cars have not only been going to lower displacement engines, but less cylinders while adding more computer controls, direct injection, increased smog equipment, etc. I understand where you're coming from, but you're doing so from an emotional standpoint, and with increasing Government regulations around the world and rising fuel prices, car manufacturers have to balance things as best as they can.
      Just like the rotary, the VR6 isn't coming back. The best you can do, is keep as many VR6s running as possible. Hopefully the aftermarket for it won't dry up as it has been for the rotary.

Maybe bcuz its a 2l litre turbo. Notinf special about that. Even tho its abit faster then the R32 i wouldnt buy it.. interior not special. Seats are plain. MK5 R32 yea beatifil sound even when you just start it you can feel like this is some superior car feels RAW plenty of low down grunt. again interior let down shitty seats from factory.. deffo needs wingbacks.. then the MK4 R32 thats on anaither level looks Raw feels even RAWER to drive then both.. exterior looks beasty with the big bumpers side skirts.. interior seats are full proper bucket konigs. nice thick sterring wheel brushed aluminium trim. Feels like VW when all out on that and still till today its regarded one of VW best cars ever made..

      Everyone's entitled to their opinion! I find rising blue to be a bit flat. It doesn't have that oomph DBP and LB have. DBP isn't that common as black R32s are most common where I'm from and LB is definitely the choice most people go for
