I don't know if this R32 is with a DSG, maybe an option, instead of the 6speed manual.🤔 Get the sunroof out, put a cage in, rip the interior out, go for a nice time attack track tool maybe.
Grab the front subframe, clean it up, powder coat it, with step by step on the prep. Same with all the suspension arms. Some DIY seat repair? Aftermarket stereo, done correctly? Cheap headliner repair? That's all I can think of right now. Press On!!!
I certainly want to upgrade my stock stereo and speakers. I think my front L speaker has a short because it makes an interesting noise everytime I start up my car. Great point on the headliner! For the most part mine is fine except for the rear near the hatch and my front pillars coming undone.
I would LOVE to see a complete & in-depth video series on building up a race-ready VR6. Stripping down, block re and re, boring, oversized pistons and h-beam rods, crank knifing, dry sump, timing, CNC dimple head porting, oversized valves with dual springs and titanium retainers, cams, short intake, big turbo, meth injection, and dyno tuning. Or, instead of the stereotypical VR6 turbo, a REAL electric supercharger/hybrid system. There’s some companies out there doing electric motors driving the crank via cogged belt (as opposed to an electric leaf blower fan in the intake), and battery banks in the rear.
I would *totally* hang a rusted, Humble Mechanic-signed R32 fender on my wall in the garage, looking over my Golf R, hahaha! A giveaway would be cool and would give some folks an interesting story to tell.
My first thought was actually to do one of those beetle fender bikes that I've been seeing over on pinterest... I wonder what one of those would look like in an R32 fender... =p
I am really looking forward to this project. As you know, I drive a 17 year old Peugeot 307 and have never had anything VW, nor do I plan to. I am addicted to your videos though. I think it is your methods that do it for me rather than the objects. The way you explain each step and the huge depth of your knowledge. Not to mention your passion for what you do. It is really interesting and easy to understand.
Here's a crazy idea. Put that R32 powertrain in a MK1 Audi TT. North America was robbed of a 6 speed, V6 TT. So many people talk about it on the forums and there aren't any detailed videos of it. I know its not a VW buuuut... its a VW.
I’m so glad you cover a lot of the mk4 golf. I’ve had mine for 16 years factory standard zero modifications. I must be the only one! Wish I was local to you but I’m in the UK
I'm literally starting my own R32 project, same color and almost exactly the same issues. I'm geeked you're putting out content that will help me along on my own project. Cant wait.
Charles....please please do a timing chain. I need to do a clutch and timing chain my tornado red r32! I actually just repainted and tackled my rust issues with my rockers and fenders. Everything your doing right now I just tackled body wise. Closing in on 200k and 10 years of highs and lows. Also a midwestern car I can relate to the black one more than the blue one for sure.
Not sure what's lacking on DIY vids for for Mk4 R32's but I'm just kinda excited to see what you do with this car. I used to have a 2000 Mk4 Golf nothing fancy but it was still fun to drive.
There's going to be some awesome content in this car. as a former northerner I can't wait to see how you tackle the rust. If you're serious about selling the white wookie I may be interested in giving it a good home in CLT.
Since I am from Germany I can tell: All the rust spots are super common on these era VWs. Almost any and all have these issues, when not looked after well. Especially the fenders - it happens that there the drains get clogged and the leafs and all get wet, keep the wetness there and finally it starts to rust. A good thing to do in our world of road salt is regular washing and cleaning out the drainage around the fenders. It is not only a VW thing, my Opel also was full of gunk there.
I have an automatic mk4 jetta wagon 2.0 gas, and I don't have any workmanship problems (as far as I know), it has 288,xxx miles on it, and it is still my daily, yes it does have a little bit of electrical issues like interior light come on every once a while or that one door lock is not communicating to remote or the car it self. But the engine runs smoothly, transmission shift fine, everything just works! Sometimes even want to take it apart and see how can this thing keep running this good! And can't wait to see more R32 modifications!
Looking forward to this too Charles! Had my 2003 UK R32 since new and still love getting under it to tinker. Big Brake Kit is on my future mods list so can't wait to see your reaserch and opinions... Thanks again for making quality R32 content, and I'm still insanely jealous of your new workshop!
looking forward to the compression/leak down test. I purchased a mk5 r32 with 150k a year ago. Running smooth from what I can tell; really want to stage 1 supercharger but afraid of what is lurking inside. 🙊 so excited!!!! keep up the great videos humble!!!!!
Yeah the front wings/fenders are the same shape and width across the mk4 range so pretty cheap, same as the mk5.And that front bumper is an easy fix with some plastic weld, nice project dude.i have a mk5 R32 here in the uk so any R content is great.
Hi Charles. I’m French and owner of a 2005 3.2 V6 Audi TT, so to say a Mk4 R32 with an Audi Badge ! So interested with all you can do on the power train and chassis. Thanks for the content, it is just awesome !!!
@HumbleMechanic Charles awesome video! I can feel your excitement for this R32 through your enthusiasm and eagerness, for the turbo and big brake kit. In a previous thread of yours I posted about an issue I was having with my MK4 R32 - CPS BANK A&B Circuit High Input. I replaced the sensors myself, but never cleared/reset the monitors, and as a result I failed SMOG. You replied to my inquiry and I was encouraged to not give up on my R. Long story short....had I not passed SMOG I would have likely listed the R for sale at around $3500 with 224k miles (no rust). After seeing your project R I'm glad I didnt low ball myself and I now share the optimism of building my R into a race car like yourself! My R has been my daily since 2006, so I'll be picking up a newer vehicle first, and then at a much slower pace following your lead! I look forward to your posts and the feedback from the VW community.
The lift is boss and the garage is still too clean! White Wookie VR6 turbo needs to be given a chance to live. Testing the Miata on the dragon should be an option! Yes, good to see older Dubs get some love❤ too. Great video!
I'm super excited about this build. I bought a used 2003 jetta gli 2.8 vr6 and I'm really anxious to bring it back to full glory and perhaps beyond normal glory. Looking forward to vr6 content :)
6:29 best thing you can do to save your car is run an AGM style battery. I put one in the 99.5 Jetta I got in 2001 and besides it lasting 13 years when I pulled the battery tray up to inspect the wiring recently , the grounds looked brand new. What did it have for a battery for the last 8 years ? A dead one , it was tucked away in the garage awaiting timing chains and all that has been completed recently. So spring a couple extra bucks on a better battery than a plain old lead acid , and you'll be happier years later.
Yo! Super excited for this build. I'm currently doing the head gasket on my MK4 R32. They're apparently bullet broof but none the less I am doing mine. There's not a lot of information on the 24v vr6 head gasket replacement. I'm looking forward to when you pull the head! Cheers
Would love to see you follow the mk3 gti project through. I like seeing the older gens getting some love would be cool if you ever do a mk1 or 2 gti or maybe a scirocco or Corrado.
I'm stoked for this series. I'm in the process of straightening out my R32 and I'm betting I'll learn quite a bit from this. Looking forward to seeing the knuckles come off... My axle bolt is rusted and I can't get it out lol.
Hi Humble mechanic, Would always like to see more Diesel videos, the 1.9tdi has a massive following here in the UK and europe across the VAG group. Soon I may be attempting clutch and flywheel, then steering rack and pump replacement.
had the oil pan changed, ive had to change one a few times on a buddies, what genius/comedian designed those bolts to go in the transmission housing :D
Rear R32 rear suspension bushing rebuild, I haven’t got to that on my R since I haven’t seen any detailed videos of it. I did rebuild my 3.2l engine using your white vr6 rebuild video.
Lord Fusor makes an adhesive that will fix that bumper cover. Probably 120/T20/T21 or 152/153, but I'd contact them for a recommendation. I've used their products for automotive plastic repairs and have always been happy with the results.
Oh my, I have that same sway bar and 034 end link setup on my Mk7 GLI. Well, it has different bends in it for the AWD vs my FWD but those end links are so worth the extra cost. I do love me some H&R as I also have their lowering sport springs also. Was shocked how much difference the rear sway bar and end link upgrade made with the overall handing and made the initial turn-in so much better. I think I am going to keep and continue running the DCC adaptive dampeners as I really do like them. Thank you for this one Charles and looking forward to your new Wookie build. Man I hope we get to do the event next year, still not over the cancellation.
Picked up a bmp r32 for 3100. Has an eip turbo kit and melted piston from said kit🤣 and pretty mint interior with cloth seats. Would like to see how u address straightening the pinch welds, coolant tank relocation, rear quarter glass seal replacement as well as the brembo 17z big brake install
I’m excited for this series. I’ve been looking for a clean mk4 vr6 Jetta or GTI, and when I find one this will be the perfect place for me to learn how to diy.
I dig it! I bought an R32 with less miles and in arguably better mechanical shape for 4300 about two years ago. It suffered from clear failure (red) and had some mix/matched body panels and was subsequently painted black (poorly) by a previous owner. I got the fans working (it had Spals with a switch) which got the AC working, and I fixed some other issue with the rear haldex not working and it was a fun car. I now have a much nicer red one and I'm happier for it. I also have a MK1 TT that has a 3.2 swap that has the same vision of power. I would love to see this build follow a "budget" theme all the way through--refurbish rather than replace when possible and show that a MK4 can be done well without a ton of money if you're willing to put in the work.
Charles, show us how the center diff feeds off trans and how to service it when it leaks! Maybe show us seals, center diff "bearing" and how to properly mark the shaft when disassembling halves to replace the bearing.
If I would have knows this channel 2 years ago I would have sold u mine! Black, around 90k miles of going to work and home driving. I know u would have loved that car, for me it was better selling it and got an Mk7 gti, 2 door w R bumpers.
I have a 172000 mile car in the uk. It’s not as bad as yours but the wings are similar. Mine has a catalytic converter warning light and Haldex too ( think it’s the plug corroded inside) intermittent. Looking forward to watching this evolve and maybe address the mutual issues 👍🏼
This car needs some love... bushings, arms, suspension. I think there're a lot of content to make vídeos keep it so OEM as posible and improve handling, clutch, 4 motion and remove rust. Another R32 in da house!!!
That suspension looks like my old 2000 Neon, my first car (bought in 08 when I turned 18). The suspension was all sorts of messed up after 3 years of driving. I replaced all the suspension and other stuff myself, thing ran and drove great. Yeah its a Neon....but it was my learning car. I learned a whole lot of what not to do on it as well lol.
Wow, congrats on your new purchase! I would love to have one. These are Super rare cars here in Canada... I think they only came in as second hand US imports. The cheapest one I can find locally is going for 12k.... I’m going to enjoy seeing what you do with this one.
Man that clamp on the front driver side CV boot drives me nuts, especially since I have seen that on God knows how many cars. I really cant belive that there are "mechanics" who have the audacity to put those kinds of clamps on a CV boot. Oh and the fender giveaway would be awesome, I can totally see its place in the shop. :D
That's sn awesome find, Charles - it'll be better than new when you're done! Looking forward to the adventures a lot; bet you're lovin' that lift as well. Great work! 👍🏻🛠
19:28 Idk about other models, but on polos leaves and other scheisse fall through the plastic piece covering the wiper *motors etc* and then they turn in to soil in there and cause the rust issue.
You mentioned a swap for the Miata and as I was going to say VR^?! You said VR6 turbo swap. That would be the most exciting thing for me on your channel!
In UK have 2.8 BDE 4mo with R32 suspension set up and brakes. Just done timing chains, running sweet now but change to single mass flywheel and clutch caused nightmares with the central slave cylinder/release bearing fitment and bleeding issues!! So be great to see how you tackle that on the new project.
Charles. Can’t wait to see you go through this. I also have a HPA Turbo Kit. FT470. Charles. Once you’re pretty much at the end of completion on this R32. I highly recommend HPA’s Touchmotion. I purchased it and it is a must even if you have a complete stock MK4 R32 and Audi MK1 TT!!
Request : Although not too difficult, I cant find gen 1 haldex rebuild instructions (general checking, and eg clutchpack replacing), all parts still available from vw/audi. As you understand, my haldex is busted on the TT.
I might have just gotten the cheapest MKV R32 here in Virginia yesterday $1150.00. High mileage 216k, great maintenance records, she bumped a truck with a hitch. Took out the grill and passenger sprayer and broke the top tabs on the headlights. A few other cosmetic issues on the interior, but overall I stole it !
Just went through my mk4 rusty Minnesota GTI. I pulled the motor and completely replaced most of the suspension. If the subframe is the same as other mk4s you can get a Dansk aftermarket one for $115. Look up electrolysis for rust removal or evaporust in a 5 gallon bucket and let sit a couple of days for all rusty parts. I did the fuel tank strap replacement. Yours look pretty rusty. New parking brake cables, cheap. Control arm kit from FCPeuro. The most expensive parts was probably all the new hardware. Yours looks bad. For the white corrosion parts on aluminum such as the transmission, pontoon boat cleaner works pretty good. I bought a aluminum acid solution purple something from a auto parts store in a gallon container. Spray on power wash off. Maybe left a greyer tint after, but looks almost new. Sprayed with boeshield protectant and it should stay rust free for many years. Boeshield works good on bare aluminum parts. On the motor, man was it rusty. Paint a rust flaking off. Used a wire wheel, but you are going to send the motor to a machine shop and it will not have to mess with that headache.
So excited for this build, a good bit TLC is definitely over due for that beautiful machine ❤️ As for future 'how to' videos I'd love an in depth look at drivetrain, subframe/arms and pretty much all suspension removal and refurbishment please Charles 👍 as I really want to do my R32! Looking forward to seeing the continual stream of quality content GO TEAM R32! 😁🤦
I’m so excited it looks like my mk4 I been fighting off the rust for the past 8 years. Love to see how to properly fix the rockers lots of diy for rockers but nothing for pinch welds.
I would also like to know why he is calling out the pinch welds. What can be done to protect them so they don't end up looking like that? You have to jack up the car from there so they will get damaged, is it because the paint scrapes off and they rust?
newish thing to the bumper repair scene is a hot stapler. Maybe wortha look and try and film the process. Theyre simple to use and quite effective. And easy to combine with plastic welding. Thaughts ?
Looking forward to your future videos on this. I have a few similar issues with rust on my MK5 R32 on the drivers door corner (Not as bad giving the mileage), so will be interesting how you address this. I notice the sills look similar as well, so it would be nice to see how you put them back together creating a nice flush finish, as you can see like a 1mm gap on mine, very annoying!
Would be nice to see the entire rebuild procedure of the engine step by step for us R32 owners. A cool one (more like pain in the a**) would be intake manifold removal. It kicked my ass last month trying to extract the bolts while on service mode (second to the left lower hex bolt stripped cuz the alternator was in the way)
Turdy-tree hunnid!? Nice score! All that rust is the standard here in Cleveland. ("At least we're not Detroit." :D) Loads of (Cleveland-made) PB Blaster, torque, and patience required.
Local dude is contemplating selling his mk4 R32, and there is so much want in me for one to go with my 2018 R. BUT I don't have your skills to give the TLC it may potentially need. The struggle is real.
Pretty pretty pretty bad, but if anyone is going to get this R back to its glory days you're the man to do it. I'm looking forward to seeing some great content for years (ha) to come. What instrument cluster was that at 4:05, I have never seen digital layout like that on an R.
I need your help! What is lacking DIY wise on these cars? I Want to be sure I get everything out of this possible
High HP build would be great.
Nice, fix exterior rust or replace rusty body panels then cool wrap?
HumbleMechanic not a diy request but does the r32 front and rear bumper fit on the mk4 gti? Thanks
I don't know if this R32 is with a DSG, maybe an option, instead of the 6speed manual.🤔
Get the sunroof out, put a cage in, rip the interior out, go for a nice time attack track tool maybe.
@@Hi__itsHassan they fit, lots of ppl here in Germany crave for them and swap them, even on normal G4
When someone buys a parts car but doesn't have the heart to let it die, true car guy!

I certainly want to upgrade my stock stereo and speakers. I think my front L speaker has a short because it makes an interesting noise everytime I start up my car.

Turbo project and forged engine rebuild. Like if you agree 🙋♂️
You gonna fund the build then I'm in 😂😂👍👍
Not forged.. please let the enige rebuild be detailed AF!! 😍
@Oliver Pigot: Why not forged...?
Supercharged
Keith’s Garage well oke forged and detailed 😜
IMO some of the best looking OEM wheels ever made!
100%
May I disagree? I'd go for the "8xa601025hfzzk80", I know just 17", but more my taste. 🙂
Similar to the Rotiform BUC... which I love!
Pretorias by far superior.
Agreed! I’d love a set for my Mk5 GTI!!

Great work! 👍🏻🛠
Cool project! Definitely not beyond saving. Even assuming there will be some nasty rocker rust hidden. Excited to see you do some mods on it!
I would love to see some Haldex maintenance. Aside from fluid changes. Clutch packs, LSD, the bushing on the drive/prop shafts
Blimey mrHumble...your first inspection of the underside...I only wish a bad example UK car could be that clean!!!
A keeper for sure. Those things are going to absolutely rocket in value like the MK2 GTi's did
Forget the cosmetic stuff!! You already have a nice one, make it a streetable track toy
@Maveric073
How many miles were on your R when you decided with the Turbo Kit?
Really excited to see the wild nature of this build. See you at witw 2021!!!!
UGH is it April yet!!!
Show how we can clean the fender/side skirt to prevent body rust & corrosion. I will be following this for sure! Nice job.
Always a great day when THM uploads. Sheer quality from beginning to end. Gotta love The Humble Mechanic.
Thank you!!!
Request : Although not too difficult, I cant find gen 1 haldex rebuild instructions (general checking, and eg clutchpack replacing), all parts still available from vw/audi. As you understand, my haldex is busted on the TT.
Rusted Cats? New Exhaust and race cats will fix that easily. Looks great Charles. I am excited to follow this one.
Wow. That's gonna be a cool project. Can't wait you start tuning this car. Killing it !!!
Really looking forward to this build! Love the r32 VR6 love. Looks like a lot of work. Best of luck!
I'm totally off subject here but I'm loving the new shop.
Looking forward to this build! And Yes BY FAR THE CHEAPEST! 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
You car was pretty cheap too!
That’s AWESOME.
I love watching a crapheap get polished up and made good again. This is probably your most enticing content yet
So excited for this build, a good bit TLC is definitely over due for that beautiful machine ❤️
As for future 'how to' videos I'd love an in depth look at drivetrain, subframe/arms and pretty much all suspension removal and refurbishment please Charles 👍 as I really want to do my R32!
Looking forward to seeing the continual stream of quality content GO TEAM R32! 😁🤦
I'm really excited about this project too!👍 A car,if it wasn't an R32, that would be ready for the crusher and turned in to a hot rod! Go for it!
If it was not an R32, it would become a truck I think .
Please show us everything, all disassembly repair and assembly. Also some rust prevention?
I’m so excited it looks like my mk4 I been fighting off the rust for the past 8 years. Love to see how to properly fix the rockers lots of diy for rockers but nothing for pinch welds.
I would also like to know why he is calling out the pinch welds. What can be done to protect them so they don't end up looking like that? You have to jack up the car from there so they will get damaged, is it because the paint scrapes off and they rust?
Aluminum subframe time!! Man, this is going to be some work with all that rust. But it looks like a fun challenge. Best of luck, sir.
I am very excited for this series!!
newish thing to the bumper repair scene is a hot stapler.
It kicked my ass last month trying to extract the bolts while on service mode (second to the left lower hex bolt stripped cuz the alternator was in the way)
I'm super jazzed about this car, too!
Turdy-tree hunnid!? Nice score!
All that rust is the standard here in Cleveland. ("At least we're not Detroit." :D)
Loads of (Cleveland-made) PB Blaster, torque, and patience required.
I've kept up with u for a while from this ...show .,
u tube to u having your show on cable ...great job....very informative..💪👍😎
Local dude is contemplating selling his mk4 R32, and there is so much want in me for one to go with my 2018 R. BUT I don't have your skills to give the TLC it may potentially need.
The struggle is real.
You need it!!! Haha if it’s red or silver LMK
Absolutely looking forward to seeing this done! Looking to turbo my black magic R32 as well!
Pretty pretty pretty bad, but if anyone is going to get this R back to its glory days you're the man to do it. I'm looking forward to seeing some great content for years (ha) to come. What instrument cluster was that at 4:05, I have never seen digital layout like that on an R.
This is going to be a great restoration project, look forward to the final outcome.
