call me weird but I think the MK6 golf is one of the best looking cars ever made. Ever since I was a kid and saw them on the road I thought they looked good, now I own one for 3 years and I still think it looks better than almost anything on the road.
I've owned a silver 5 door MK6 R for the past 5 years and I love it to bits. At the time I was going to consider buying a mk7. I test drove both and the Mk7 felt like a improvement, as you would expect. But there was something really unique about the Mk6. Now, 5 years on, I'm loving my Mk6 and it was the best decision I made. I see loads of Mk7 Rs across London and I'll be seriously lucky to see a 6. The gap between 6 and 7 on the 2nd hand market is beginning to close and it will not be long before they are level. I've had a stage 1 remap and milltek exhausts. It's pushing around 310. I don't need anymore power than that if i'm honest. I've driven to the South of France twice and worthersee Austria for the gti show. Even at the show people kept asking me if it was a real R. My opinion, with so few around it's likely going to hold its value and be a sort after Golf as time goes by.
Couldn’t of put it better myself. I remember buying a mk5 gti at the dealership and the mk6 R had just came out that week. Always wanted one. Some are 18k even now very rare car
I was thinking to sell my Nissan skyline 350gt and buy volkswagen golf R mk6 but can I tune it to stage 1 without changing any factory parts, how fast will it go 0-100 km, is it reliable
Just picked up a 2013 golf r and really like it so far. 40000 mile one owner and it’s Volkswagen certified. Came with a two year warranty through Volkswagen
My 2013 MK6 R has been a great daily driver since new. Only routine maintenance, and (most importantly) new tires. The OEM Dunlops made the car feel slothful in the handling department. I need A/S tires for practicality, so I replaced the Dunlops with Michelin PS/AS-3+, and the difference in overall grip was noticeable and notable after the "new tire" film wore off. The car is almost devoid of wind noise on the highway (the Michelins have a road hum that's been muted with wear). No creaks or rattles yet, though my city streets remain optimistically rough. The interior is holding up as almost new. I'm using APR's Stage_2+ software with it's downpipe exhaust, moving up from Stage_1 and 1+. Never a CE light, never a hiccup. Still on the OEM clutch after 7k miles on 2+! Of course I agree the Mk7R is the better performer, and better tuning platform. I imagine driving 7/10ths in the 7R is like 8/10ths+ in the 6R. Still, as said, I see more of them on the road than I do the Mk6 R. That scarcity seems a comfort to me. I prefer the 6R's styling over the 7R (though I don't find the 7R's looks objectionable), so to each his own. I still sometimes find myself looking back at my car as I walk away from it. From the front it looks like Demon-seed. from the rear, just a normal Golf. Lastly, here in the US, the 6R was never offered with an automatic tranny. All the better to go rowing through the gears (DieselGeek short-shift kit here). One can't get enough practice driving a manual (and melding with the R); it's the perfect visceral driving experience.
I agree. I have an MK6 and I could afford pretty much any car 100k or less and I prefer to stick with the MK6. I have a GTX3076R making around 450 AWHP right now, so it's pretty great, lol.
I've had the honor of owning both an mk6r and a mk7 gti, just like you, I found that the mk7 felt very over assisted and numb on the electric ps and ea888 makes a really tin kind of 4 cylinder sound which I don't like. My mk6r I still currently own, I love it to death and would keep it for life. CDL Ea113 might be an old engine and has its flaws but I'd take it any day over an mk7r
I totally agree with you... I own a mk6 and I was excited to move forward to the amazing performance of the mk7..... but after the test drive I felf really disappointed with steering wheel feel.... feels so electric
I have just discovered this little site. Power is all relative. Until I bought my mark 7 GTI 220 PS I had had two basic Honda Jazzes and diesel people carriers, that kind of thing for decades. You can imagine my astonishment with the performance of the GTI. Whilst it is very modest compared with many cars, it has very useable power on our roads. My main drive is a Peugeot Boxer camper with 110 PS and is 2.6 tonnes. I love it to bits as it is so comfortable and easy to drive but it is quite a contrast with the GTI.
I drove a mk6 gti dsg and then a mk7 gti manual and loved the mk6 much more. The visibility seemed so much better on the mk6 aswell as the leather seats vs the leathers on the mk7.
Mk5 r32 checking in!!! The 3.2 purrrrrrrrr wins all day long against this glorified gti. You don’t need to ‘thrash’ an r32 to enjoy it and the power delivery from a naturally aspirated engine is like poetry in motion.
I always fancied a R32 but I drove one. Sounded awesome but too lacklustre. Ebde duo getting an Edition 30. Lighter, faster and more nimble. Regret getting rid.
Andrew, We have both, with DSG and dynamic chassis control, better is a very subjective word, I would say not, I think the Mk 7 is much better, having said that the Mk6 is still very good.
Must pretty much agree! We own both a 2012 MK6 GT R-Line, which by the way looks Faboulus in Deep Black Pearl finish! But can its engine on 160 hp & a Manual compare to my newer 2017 GTI Clubsport with 290 hp max DSG, DCC, 5.1 Surround Sound, Full Leather seats, etc etc..?? Not by far! But does it make any of them bad? No! Because theyr still both awesome Golfs! To be honest the old MK6 is even "better" on some roads because it has more rubber on tires, and drives more calmly than the monstrous Clubsport at times! 😄 Very thankfull for the DCC on the Clubsport though, which is being used Daily! 👍
Hi pal....I've always said the MK6-R is/was unbelievably underrated..why?..I don't know.... I've always preferred them to the MK7..they look way better..they have the streamlined-wing-to-rear look thats reminiscent of the MK3..which disappeared on the MK7's....The interior was better..especially the half-heated black leather with the alcantara suede....And they're equally as tunable and yet from when they first came out an unbelievable "10" years ago..we rarely see them on the road..its an absolute travesty..as they're as modern as the MK7 in every way....Great video comparing these 2 related titans....
@@ian-zh4ul yep, gearbox and haldex are also inferior... the mk7 and especially the mk7.5 are much better stock for stock. Tuning potential for the EA888 is higher than that of the old EA113.
@@SPIKE0-0-0 No, it is not. The MK7 uses an entirely different turbo/manifold than the MK6. A lot of people just end up doing a K04 swap to the MK6 and make good enough power that the MK7 would have to swap the turbo to exceed it.
I’ve owned by the 6 and 7.5, both in 6sp man form. To my mind the steering feel and weight is far superior in the 7.5 and, in race mode, feels more direct lock to lock. I think this is backed up by the specs. Both the primary and secondary rides are vastly better in the Mk 7.5 as is the brake and clutch feel (especially when you remove the clutch support spring on the 7.5), and the gear change is much less wooly and numb than the 6. One other key thing that may get missed on first look is that VW moved the front axle forward and when you look at the side profiles of both the 6 and 7/7.5 it’s something that once seen, can’t be unseen. This, combined with the much wider track on the later car leads to improved handling and ride. Finally interior space, especially elbow space, is vastly superior in the later car. In the end, VW have done a fantastic job in evolving this car (with exception of the god-awful MK4) and I can’t wait for the MK8 which I’m sure will be a quantum leap in all areas over the current model
@@tubejorrit I've yet to drive the MK8 so can't comment on it other than to say I hate the interior. Not a fan of button-less info/HVAC systems at all. The drive promises to be much better than the MK7/7.5 as the 4WD system allows for a bit of drifting, unlike the Haldex system in the Mk7/7.5. Sadly I couldn't wait any longer for the MK8 and bought a Toyota GR Yaris instead and my patience for electronic driver-dulling gadgetry is getting thinner as I'm getting older. The Yaris is a very analogue car by comparison
Enjoyed the video - as always - and very interested to listen to your conclusions, which in summary appear to be that the Mk 7 is the better car (to be expected for the later iteration, I guess), but that the Mk 6 has more character, and my interpretation of what you say is that it provides a driver experience where ( having never driven the Mk 6) the driver is having more say in the way the car actually drives than is the case with the Mk 7. As a Mk 5 R32 owner, who enjoyed your video comparing it to the Mk4, I have no doubt that the Mk 6 R is a ‘step up’ from the Mk 5 R32. However, I then go back to your conclusions about character and there I feel the Mk 5 R32 trumps the Mk 6 largely due to the noise it makes and which you get to enjoy on every journey you make. Personal view is that the Mk 5 still handles pretty well, is still quick enough to be exhilarating on the right roads and that, coupled with the noise, does it for me. However, I think we are all lucky to be able to drive any of these fantastic cars. Keep the videos coming. Would love to see Mk 4 through Mk 7 Golfs in the same video some time.
That maybe true, but the nose heavy nature of the mk5's vr6 does take away some character too in my opinion. The mk6 will be lighter and more responsive when it comes to handling. It all comes down to what you want out of the car of course.
I own an mk6 GTI with APR k04, and a stock mk6 R. I just can't get into the styling of the mk7. I've taken pictures of my cars next to the 7's and for me, the mk6 is the best looking of all of the Golfs, and the R with the twin exhaust in the center just looks so much classier, than the quad pipes on the 7R.
Hi Andrew. You kindly did an appraisal letter for my Monza blue MK2 golf 16v in 2007 (sadly it was written off due to being rear ended!). Stumbled upon this great video, and thought it was quite funny since I now drive a mk6 golf r myself :)
Hey Andrew, would like to get your personal opinion on something if you don't mind. I always thought the MK5 GTI/ED30 are lovely in their red color, pretty much the color to get on those. However, i always thought the red color doesn't quite work on the MK6 despite me liking the MK6 more in terms of looks in general. What do you think?
Great review. I really am not keen on the look of the 7, blends in with the crowd I think, I brought the 6r for that reason. It looks so sick and I’ve never seen another one on the road !
the big plus for me on the mrk. 6 is the door cards aka window controls are slanted, that means you can se them when driving also the angel upwards is nice for the arm holding the steering wheel regards Sören
I agree with you. In fact, one of the reasons, in the USA, for me purchasing a 2013 MK6 R, is for the rarity. Mine is a manual, as All(4) my cars are, it's also why I am looking at R8's. My R has leather, like the other one, so it's a gr8 package. As a cyclist, it's my daily driver, as I put my bike on the inside only. It's all-wheel drive system is amazing & really does gr8 here in the mountains of Western North Carolina in the snow, as well. Thanks
Not only do you know your VAG products but you secure some cracking examples too Andrew. 130k, really... wow. If I ever have some spare cash to lavish on a performance VAG product, I know who I will be contacting. Another great video buddy.
I completely agree, although I’m not biased in any way as I’m about to buy a mark VI golf r. 😅 Having owned a Mark 7.5 GTI I can say the German made Mark VI golf R is a step above.
Great video, was waiting a long time for a video like this! What do you thinking about comparing the mark 6 to the 7? Might be interesting for a loooot of guys. ;-)
Not all EA888 are the same, the one on GTI will have smaller turbo/intercooler/injectors and I'd imagine weaker internals than that in the Mk7 Golf R which was probably under development at time. People have been tuning EA113s for years and they have proven really tough. VW Motorsport were happy use the CDL EA113 in their racing cars (Scirocco Cup and Edition 35 Cup) in largely untouched form (Scirocco even ran on CNG!). EA888 is more efficient engine and responds nicely but I wouldn't say it was over engineered like the EA113 which only had to produce 280 max in standard form (facelift Scirocco). Never had to fix a coolant leak on EA113 but EA888 they all do it - this is very un-VW, to produce a high performance engine that has an inherent reliability issue like this one. If the rest of the engine is equally poor, I have my doubts about long term durability. There are already talks of timing chain issues while EA113 avoid that with replaceable rubber timing belt. Only time wil tell...
Hi there, excellent video as always, I have edition 35 dsg and am wondering which is more economic to run , the R32 or the 35? Do you have any insight there please ? Thanks very much
Hi Timj41, all the older TFSI engines which the Edition 35 shares with the 6R and Scirocco R are pretty poor on fuel. I think on a steady run the R32 will be at least as good as the 2 litres and I don't think DSG helps even though it means slighter lower Co2 emissions on the old (discredited) NEDC emissions test. But..the Edition 35 will feel a lot faster and like a lot of turbo cars will burn fuel at a high rate when on boost. So in summary, not a lot in it!
Hi thanks for the reply, we now run it on 100octane fuel ,previously 98 octane, now only for engine health rather than extra power as with VW warranty I am not going to mess with the engine tune at this stage. Local fuel network in NZ sells 100 for same or lower than BP Ultra 98.
What an awesome looking machine , have only ever seen one in Ontario Canada . Would love to find one like that in red , smart looking machine and I love the seats and interior . Damn ! Great videos , keep them coming .
Enjoyed your vid I’m a massive VW Golf fan since I was a kid Currently I have a Mk7 R stage 3 with over 530 HP and my daughters love the golf too GTi for my eldest Keep up the good work Personally the Mk7 is the perfect one even over the softer looking Mk7.5
Ive watched this one twice because I really want and 6R but then Ive watched the edition 35 video and really like that one too, so next question can we have a ed 35 and 6R comparison please.
No need, go Edition 35 as the Haldex AWD system is troublesome and many 6Rs have got noisy rear diffs too. Also much more likely to find a stock GTI than an R
@@volkswizard Yeah there seems to be more problems with mk7 clutches but the mk6 clutches seem kinda weak as well. How has your mk5 edition 30 held up??
Hi Andrew, been following your channel for awhile now - love your content thanks. Question: in your opinion, would you prefer a mk7 GTI DSG or a mk6 GTI manual (daily commute/traffic not an issue)? I understand the mk7 GTI is a step up in performance, tech, and particularly handling, etc. but I am hesitant re build quality - not a good experience owning a 2014 Skoda Octavia vRS, after oil cooler and water pump went, then the infotainment system and electric tailgate. Also, the mk7 GTI is an extremely rare find in manual (here in New Zealand) as is the mk6 GTI, however I have found a mint, one owner 2010 mk6 GTI manual (lowered on Golf R springs) with 78,000kms and it seems to have quite an allure about it amongst a sea of mk7 GTI DSGs.. I know I will need to do preventative maintenance re timing chain tensioner job. Not concerned about power, as will go Stage 1 with either vehicle (just sold a 2011 Scirocco TSI 2.0 DSG and that was plenty fast with Stage 1 remap). Or perhaps a mk6 R manual is worth an extra £4k? Thanks in advance for you insights, and apologies for the long-winded query!
Tricky, well having seen a few early Mk7s now I think for reliability you need a Mk6. Mk6 Golf R is a good looking car but haldex can pack up and GTI probably at least as good to drive so go for that. As you say, get chains done and enjoy!
Mk6 is a 2.0 TFSI so 4 cylinder. If you means Mk5 is sounds great but isn't that quick and has an awful lot of weight over front axle which means it likes to push on a bit too readily. Mk6 R is a much more rounded drivers car
My understanding is the blue colour on the R started with the Mk4 R32, the original pre production and still VW owned car (housed in the autostadt) was finished in jazz blue, this colour was not available on the final production R32, but as a nod to the originals body colour the production cars callipers were painted the same colour, this is now carried through to the current models with the blue lighting theme, so there’s still a piece of the iconic original car in the latest model, this heritage is one example of the little things that enthusiasts like about the brand.
I would much rather have a nicely tuned up r32 thank you very much, that sound is something you cant come close to ! revs so much nicer and more linear in power delivery which is better for the track so honestly r32 is better and more reliable you have no turbo and no intercooler therefore less things to go wrong
You may and I do believe it is. There is a bit of confusion about the exact hp figures. S3 was 265 bhp in 2009 I think but this was quoted as 270/272. I am pretty sure both will be CDL coded engines and any changes will be software anyway. Thanks :)
Thank you! Wondering cause one of the tuning companies im looking at they've quoted that the golf r mk6 gets more hp going either stage 1 or 2 which is strange cause another company has the same figuers
Hey should i be worried if my car is basically never at 90celsius? It is sometimes when i've realllyyyy pushed the car but otherwise it's around 75-85.
This video has reminded me oddly of the mk6 Golf R Cabriolet the fwd £40,000 one!! I don’t think the uk got that many, but yea 🤦♂️ shocking! That said I would still like to see you do a video on one😂
Hey Bees Wax! Thanks for reminding me about the 6R cabriolet (well I think so!). They even made a GTI cabrio. Seem to recall they couldn't sell and I can't believe they were front wheel drive like the Scirocco R but you are correct, unbelievable! I'd love to drive one for a video 😂
volkswizard Thats right I remember the GTi cab, they used the previous gen golf’s rear light cluster’s, so cheeky. I really liked the Eos when that came out, I thought it was gorgeous lol
@@volkswizard AWD running gear and stowing the convertible top would have taken any storage space left. Crazy that they couldn't sell them over there, here in the U.S. we would've killed to have them...VWoA saw fit to only bring us the New Beetle and the Eos as convertibles ...
when is the new mk8 gti / r being realeaesd ? I have been offered a golf r mk6 dsg 3dr with approx 100k miles for approx £16k - think its a bit overpriced atm though
Mk6 for £16k with 100k miles? That's insanely overpriced. I've just sold a nice one with 60k for £15k and that wasn't easy. I've just sold a 130k miles for £8800 so your car is £12k tops and I am being generous!
Mk8 is late 2019 but GTI and R are thus far unknown. They rarely make it obvious too early so they can sell the last of the Mk7.5 without putting people off
G6R looks better in all way (imo), the new 7 has an ugly front and the entire design is too angular. I guess the g6r with 1-2 bolt ons and with a remap is a super daily but fun as well at the same time. too bad the engine isnt the best and need more care not as the new ea888 3rd gen :/
One big reason why mk7 is better than mk6: Multi Point Injection (except 2019 onwards). MUCH less carbon built up and better durability (important for long-term ownership)
People go on about carbon fouling but I've only ever come across it once and that was on a 10 year old TT that had been running with a weak thermostat meaning it had been running on choke for too long.
No, it is not better than Mk7 R in any way, but it is still very good, and much more affordable. 7R has better engine with dual port injection, more tunable, better chasis, better fuel consumption overall and more power.
@@pardeepbhachu5499 Change tensioner, and clean up oil sump, and use proper oil, and you probably shouldn't have problems with tensioners. However not only VW uses this shitty tensioners, all fcking modern automotive industry also use same piece of crap, and people has problems with it.
All the comments are the exact reason I searched the whole US, to find my 2013 MK6 R & I Love it!!! Also, I chose it, because the 7 does not offer a manual or 2 doors. I plan on keeping All my 2 door manuals & collecting more in the future, if money allows😁
That is awesome David, I think you are right 2 door and manual will become sought after. We got 7R with 2 door & manual ( I ordered one brand new) but clutches were very weak so DSG is probably best choice
A mark 5 edition 30 is the car to have when comparing the mark 5 and 6. The r32 is being berated in your review, but I think someone will buy an r32 for a different reason compared to a mark 6 R. The mark 6 uses the underpinnings of the mark 5, having driven both my opinion is the mark 7 MQB underpinnings is leagues ahead with much better handling and feels a more solid car.
Don't get me wrong stevesje71, Mk5 R32 has a lot going for it but 6R is in a different league when it comes to being a driver's car thanks to being a lot more balance. A £399 remap and there is no comparison, even though they share a lot components. MQB is good, very stiff and Mk7 R is better handling but it's almost too easy. On the road we aren't setting lap times but driving for excitement while trying to be responsible and 6R gives the thrills at lower speeds but is still comfortable and refined enough for a daily. All great cars anyway :)
this didnt sell good in the states due to the downgrade we had compared to the european version 😒😒 , like always usa geting the shit versions of performace cars
you are right but at the same time , isnt fucked up how we dont have most of the lineup europe does ? just look at the new vw's compared to the ones we have in america 🤔 ...
Massive mistake i made when i bought my mk 6 R was i went for one without dynamic chassis control but with 19s the ride was way to harsh and i hated it . A 26k mistake i kept it three months and moved it on . Mine was a year old .
Sami Ahmadi Other then tracking it with a low oil level, taking a hard right corner and not being able to pick up oil for 3 seconds, resulting in $6,000 for a new (and built) motor. And the last owner never serviced the Haldex, that went on me, $4,500. Other then that it’s been great!! Lol
Mines been pretty reliable too, had mine for 3 years put 30k miles on it. only camshaft sensor went out on modded engine. Get a catch can, frequent intake valve cleanings and check/replace cam follower, the car can last a very long time
I've owned my Mk6R DSG for 12yrs now and still loving it, it's been about as reliable as a hammer too. It's been running APR 1+ for many years, modifications include Intake, HP fuel pump and a stiffer rear sway bar. Competition is stiff as I'm bench marking it against my other toys (BMW 1M and a 911).

The R32 is all sound and no go. Slow and heavy.
A r32 ain't built for speed everyone knows that its the sound of the car n experience
I always fancied a R32 but I drove one. Sounded awesome but too lacklustre. Ebde duo getting an Edition 30. Lighter, faster and more nimble. Regret getting rid.
40 Roller in your 2 litre 4 cylinder engine 😂
Daddy Murch not if you put a turbo on it. It would absolutely annihilate a MK6
7:13 thanks for this, these little details are appreciated.
Andrew,
We have both, with DSG and dynamic chassis control, better is a very subjective word, I would say not, I think the Mk 7 is much better, having said that the Mk6 is still very good.
@@tredfxman you can't compare a clubsport to a gt r line 😂
mk6 owner chiming in to say i love the look of my golf r over the mk7.
Thanks Just Sum Guy!
@@ian-zh4ul yep, gearbox and haldex are also inferior... the mk7 and especially the mk7.5 are much better stock for stock. Tuning potential for the EA888 is higher than that of the old EA113.
@@ian-zh4ul Is it possible to uprate certain parts to the MK6 from the MK7?....
So now we have the MK8, do you still think it has a quantum leap over the mk7? ;)
I've got a Mk5 R32 and this video has really made me think about whats next 🤔
Both cars look in great condition. Have a 7.5 however like the curvy lines of the 6 👍🇬🇧
Ordered a Blue Mk6 R with Recaro Wingback seats ❤ it,I'm disabled so didn't pay VAT hence why I spec'd the seats 💕
Stage 2+ they're fantastic 💕
Hey Andrew, would like to get your personal opinion on something if you don't mind. I always thought the MK5 GTI/ED30 are lovely in their red color, pretty much the color to get on those. However, i always thought the red color doesn't quite work on the MK6 despite me liking the MK6 more in terms of looks in general. What do you think?
Really enjoying your videos only recently discovered your channel! Nice and easy to watch and very informative! :)
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it, plenty more to come👍
Great review. I really am not keen on the look of the 7, blends in with the crowd I think, I brought the 6r for that reason. It looks so sick and I’ve never seen another one on the road !
the big plus for me on the mrk. 6 is the door cards aka window controls are slanted, that means you can se them when driving also the angel upwards is nice for the arm holding the steering wheel

Sören
Good points Sören, thanks :)
I love my Mk6 R. MK7s are finally growing on me...only because I've seen the renderings of that the MK8 will look like 🤢
I agree with you. Thanks
Thanks for sharing David !
Not only do you know your VAG products but you secure some cracking examples too Andrew. 130k, really... wow. If I ever have some spare cash to lavish on a performance VAG product, I know who I will be contacting. Another great video buddy.
Ive always wanted AWD and the Mk6 R suits me to a Tee and for the past 2 years its a Joy and highly enjoyable along with 6 speed manual its a treat
I completely agree, although I’m not biased in any way as I’m about to buy a mark VI golf r. 😅
Having owned a Mark 7.5 GTI I can say the German made Mark VI golf R is a step above.
I like to hear that as a new Mk6 R owner :D. Never had an appeal for mk7
Character is big wen driving ...I like both but like u said about the feel ....😎😁💪💯
Great video, was waiting a long time for a video like this!
What do you thinking about comparing the mark 6 to the 7? Might be interesting for a loooot of guys. ;-)
So the mk6 gti has the EA888 but the mk6 r has the older EA113, but why? EA888 can handle more power stock then the older EA113
In 2021 what should you be paying for an 11 plate 50k miles Mk6 R?
Great video, slightly off subject though, does a standard mk 5 gti respond well to a remap?
Standard MK5 with no other mods around 240bhp. Edition 30 around 300bhp mate
What an awesome looking machine , have only ever seen one in Ontario Canada . Would love to find one like that in red , smart looking machine and I love the seats and interior . Damn ! Great videos , keep them coming .
Enjoyed your vid I’m a massive VW Golf fan since I was a kid
Currently I have a Mk7 R stage 3 with over 530 HP and my daughters love the golf too GTi for my eldest
Keep up the good work
Personally the Mk7 is the perfect one even over the softer looking Mk7.5
Ive watched this one twice because I really want and 6R but then Ive watched the edition 35 video and really like that one too, so next question can we have a ed 35 and 6R comparison please.
No need, go Edition 35 as the Haldex AWD system is troublesome and many 6Rs have got noisy rear diffs too. Also much more likely to find a stock GTI than an R
I have heard that the manual clutches are really bad and will start slipping even with a stage 1 remap. Is there any truth to this??
Sounds more like Mk7 than Mk6 to me
@@volkswizard Yeah there seems to be more problems with mk7 clutches but the mk6 clutches seem kinda weak as well. How has your mk5 edition 30 held up??
Best looking R. I'd take the look of the 6, but the internals of the 7.

The Mk6 interior still looks quite fresh.

6R looks so amazing in the night and they are beter than the first generation on mk7. This facelifted 2018/2019 looks incredible
In my opinion the mk7 is miles ahead in every way
Mk7 Golfs look too much like Japanese cars now. They have lost their appeal.
Do you have any buying advice, for mk6 golf GTIs?
There seems to be so little information out there?
Be careful of the 2009-2011 210 PS GTIs as the timing chains can fail and new engine needed. Other than that, good cars.
Both optically and in terms of driving experience the mk6 R32 is imo better than the mk7r. I also love the sound of the hardy 6 cylinder VR6 motor.
Mk6 is a 2.0 TFSI so 4 cylinder. If you means Mk5 is sounds great but isn't that quick and has an awful lot of weight over front axle which means it likes to push on a bit too readily. Mk6 R is a much more rounded drivers car
@@volkswizard I got my mk's mixed up. I meant the mk5 r32. Love your channel, keep up the good work.
I can you make a video of the golf R 32 mk5 vs golf R line mk6
Can you do a video on the mk6 35 edition?
My understanding is the blue colour on the R started with the Mk4 R32, the original pre production and still VW owned car (housed in the autostadt) was finished in jazz blue, this colour was not available on the final production R32, but as a nod to the originals body colour the production cars callipers were painted the same colour, this is now carried through to the current models with the blue lighting theme, so there’s still a piece of the iconic original car in the latest model, this heritage is one example of the little things that enthusiasts like about the brand.
Nevermind me I only just found out from this video that the MK 6 doesn't have an EA888 like I always thought...
How do you rate the dsg version?
Rarely ever see a 6R on the road. Lovely cars but time has overtaken them and the Mk7 R is way better. Great video thanks
Thanks for commenting Alan, glad you enjoyed it :)
I wouldnt say that my volks mechanic even said thr 7 is a grandmas car and the mk6 handles more like a go kart and way lighter. He owns a mk7.
I would much rather have a nicely tuned up r32 thank you very much, that sound is something you cant come close to ! revs so much nicer and more linear in power delivery which is better for the track so honestly r32 is better and more reliable you have no turbo and no intercooler therefore less things to go wrong
It’s a lot better than mk8 style
May i ask if this is the same exact engine as the one in the 09 s3?
I did not found it on your website
How's the clutch on the manual version? Better than mk7?
Yep, no issues, sold one with 130k miles, still original!
Mk6 Golf is from an era, where it’s modern but lacks all the technology like electric handbrakes etc

I'd love to drive one for a video 😂

when is the new mk8 gti / r being realeaesd ?
7.5 looks way more aggressive and drive loads better than the 6.
How much is the one on the left?
The 3 door manual was £9k with 130k miles the 5 door DSG was £15k with 60k
@@volkswizard 9k wouldn't totally wipe me out. I take it its sold already?

No, it is not better than Mk7 R in any way, but it is still very good, and much more affordable. 7R has better engine with dual port injection, more tunable, better chasis, better fuel consumption overall and more power.
Yeah and a shitty chain tensioners that cause catastrophic engine failures. I've replaced 6 engines in the MK7.5s and counting!
@@pardeepbhachu5499 Change tensioner, and clean up oil sump, and use proper oil, and you probably shouldn't have problems with tensioners. However not only VW uses this shitty tensioners, all fcking modern automotive industry also use same piece of crap, and people has problems with it.

That is awesome David, I think you are right 2 door and manual will become sought after. We got 7R with 2 door & manual ( I ordered one brand new) but clutches were very weak so DSG is probably best choice
2012 mk6R 2door 6speed as well! in US
Good car but apart from the engine it's more or less shares most of the parts as the MK5
It shares the same engine as a MK5 Edition 30 too mate
I enjoyed my mk6 R so much that I traded it in for a mk5 R32 after 6 months.. And had many more smiles per gallon 😉
I now own that 3 door 150k cars is unreal
