You beat yourself up because you're slow. You're NOT! These things take time and there isn't any way around that. My uncle was a very experienced body and fender man for decades and he would not have gone any faster. It looks like, to me, that you're doing a very fine job. You have my respect. Let me add this: I came here because I need to perform exactly this same task on my own bug. I've watched every UA-cam vid I can find on heater channel replacement. Your camera angles speak volumes. I have learned a lot here. Thank you very much.
Great video, I have watched more videos on heater channel replacement than I care to remember as I am doing mine soon. This was by far the best with such a clean way to remove them rather than hack and fix later. Well done sir.
the wonderful world of Volkswagen. make sure to Reweld in the nutcerts in the new heater channels they tend to come right out. makes it fun when they do that. Poorly made.
On my 71, I deleted the heater channel. This car was given to me, and was so rusted out that I decided to reinvent the wheel, sort of. The car, in my opinion. Was not worth spending the money on all the reproduced parts it would need. I bought square tubing , some flat steel, and a large sheet of 18 gauge sheet metal. And proceeded to rebuild it. I live in Minnesota. You don’t even see these cars anymore. They all rusted out! Maybe a few in the summer. So, I say, you wouldn’t drive an old vw in the winter anyway, so why do you need the heater. I am saving a ton of money doing it this way, and I think it will be just as strong, maybe stronger. Oh, you can still unbolt the floor pan from the body! Just in case a future owner wants to restore it. So, you don’t see any videos of this kind of project. I’d like to see some! I can’t be the only one doing this. And I’m sure all the purists out there will condemn me for this, but I don’t care. It’s been a fun project, and I haven’t spent much money. Labor is probably the same. When done, you won’t be able to tell what I did. Any thought out there?
You kept it alive, so thats all that matters some times. I built this one so the guy I was building it for could look at a book and have something similar.
Please, please wear eye protection when you're doing this kind of work. I've had eye injuries and lost partial vision in my right eye. You have no idea just how valuable your vision is until you're threatened with loosing it.

I have been wearing eye gear alot more now. Few things fly and hit you in the face, you definitely wonder why your not covering.
Awesome job, what kind of welder did you use?
A Hobart Handler 140. Basic, but better then the normal outlet harbor freight one I had tried.
