The last true muscle car IMO. My friend had a low mile GN in the late 80s/early 90s and it was cherry. Another mutual friend loved it so much he's been collecting them ever since. I really dig the Regal being even more than a sleeper. My grandma had an 87 with a 305 and a Rochester quadrajet (I live in Rochester now so that means more to me than it did back in the day) and I loved that car. Unfortunately, it was traded in for a 95 Regal before I knew it with only 38K miles. Miss that car.

I have owned my T for 30 years . The car still has the original etched paint and no rust at all. When looking for a car in 1993 I was looking at Grand Nationals they all look the same. The T was more my style since you could get it in any color and trim combo. I still grin every time I hear the turbo spool . Great video , Thanks for the review.

As an owner of a GN I will say that it is a crime that GN's are worth so much more $$ right now. I'm happy I bought a GN, but honestly if I ever replaced it I would seek out a Turbo T like the one in this video. I agree the different colors and trim make them very cool. And I agree with the guy in the video, hard top all the way.

    • @peterl2017

@@brianlarose6110 Its weird, most times value is highly dependant on rarity. At one time in the Hagarty book the T Limited was very high, now there is a huge gap between the GN and it. 20 some thousand GNs versus 1035. I love them all, I owned a GN when I found the 20,000 mile T that I still have 25 plus years later. I had a higher mile GN and just couldn't pass on a low mile T. I get that everyone loves the look of the GN but a true enthusiast will know the powertrain is exactly the same. I think the non GN Turbo Buicks are getting a bit of a raw deal these days. There used th be a dark blue T and a white one in my area, loved them.

In an era when so many of GMs cars were made shoddily (the 80s), Buicks and Olds, seemed to be built better or at least during the G-body era. My grandma had an Old Brougham that was a really nice car until meeting it's end on a highway en route to visit my family, the car flipped, never figured out what happened but all 4 occupants survived. Her next car was an 87 Regal with a 305, a car I was old enough to drive and just loved it. I wish I knew she was trading it in when she got the 95 Regal. She never like the 95 as much as the 87. She loved her V8s.

‘87 turbo Buicks were 245 HP. The GNX was 276 HP. The ‘86 turbo Buicks were 235 HP. And these cars killed everything in the ‘80’s, not just Mustangs. A world beater. As always, great review. 👍🏻✌🏻

The T-Type (85) was the first Turbo G I ever rode in. The owner weighed about 350 lbs we had his buddy and me, a 15 year old car guy on his first trip to Jeeeeegg's.
The Ole car got it done pretty good and it handled too, as he'd put Rancho springs/struts to compliment the Eagle NCT Goodyears

Yes, I saw one in a junkyard in Virginia beach back around 1995 or so. It was silver with blue interior, just like my N/A 83 Regal Limited. The body was PERFECT!!!. I thought it very odd, as (at that time) I thought that you could only get the turbo engine was in a T-Type. Later found out you could get them from 1978 through 1983.

I bought a new '87 T-Type. I looked at the Grand National but the dealer had it marked up to $29,000 whereas I bought the Black T-Type for around $18,000. I ended up sinking another $12,000 into it for suspension, tuning and engine upgrades. The result was a car that was far beyond any Grand National but still with that understated look. I would be in the carpool line to pick up my and they would run out and jump in with huge smiles. I drove it to 140,000 miles then let it go. Fun car.

This is like the "Mustang LX" of the Buick Regal world. In 1986, the "T" was only available with the 3.8L V6 engine, not the 307 (but it was available in other Regals). Close, this is the RPO code "MW9" THM200-4R four speed automatic. The THM200 was RPO code "MV9".
We got the VIN, we win: 1G4 for US made Buick, GJ11 for Regal, 11 for two door coupe, 7 for 3.8L V6 with SFI and intercooler, 4 is a check digit, H for the 1987 model year, P for Pontiac, MI assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Pontiac, MI assembly plant closed in 1988 with the last of the RWD G body cars and the Pontiac Fiero going down the line.
We got the SPID, glad you did: AR9 for front reclining bucket seats, BV8 for colored door lock cylinders, B79 for Blue instrument cluster, C18 for windshield wiper blade and arm (likely color keyed), G87 for 8.50" ring gear, MW9 for THM200-4R four speed automatic overdrive transmission, N89 for aluminum sport wheels, TT5 for halogen headlights, UM6 for AM/FM stereo with cassette, seek scan and clock, with auto reverse, 31U for Dark Blue exterior paint, AU3 for power locks, A01 for tinted glass all windows, A31 for power windows, BD1 for rocker panel molding delete, BS1 for insulation package, BX5 for painted roof drip rail moldings, B24 for painted side reveal moldings, B71 for colored wheel well moldings, B72 for colored belt reveal moldings, B77 for painted windshield reveal moldings, B88 for body side moldings, B89 for rear window reveal moldings, B91 for colored door edge guards, B94 for trim moldings, CD4 for delay wiper system, C18 for windshield washer blade and arm, C49 for rear window defogger, C60 for air conditioning, D35 for colored outside rear view mirrors, FE3 for sport ride suspension, GU6 for 3.42 rear axle ratio, G80 for positraction rear end, J41 for power disc/drum cast iron braking system, J50 for power brake system, K09 for 120 amp alternator, K34 for cruise control, LC2 for 3.8L V6 with SFI and intercooler, aka "Silent But Deadly" engine, NA5 for Federal emissions, NP5 for leather wrapped steering wheel, N33 for tilt steering column, PON for Pontiac, MI assembly, TL6 for black radiator grille, T47 for ambient headlight control (aka "Twilight Sentinel"), T83 for special headlight door, T93 for special stop and turn signal lamps, UA6 for theft deterrent system, UQ1 for stereo provisions, US7 for painted power antenna, U23 for ignition lock light, U66 for custom speaker system, VD6 and VD7 for aluminum front and rear bumper provisions, VK3 for front license plate bracket, V73 for US/Canada vehicle statement, W02 for blackout bumper trim, Y56 for merchandising package, 27I for Blue interior trim, the rest of the 27 codes at the end have to do with Blue interior trim and seat belts and the like, among other codes.

Stripper 5.0 Mustangs went deep into the 13s/high 12s with slicks and the driver mod. Stripper turbo Regals were about the same, but didn't really require the driver mod as the Regal had an automatic and a hard hooking 4 link suspension. A 'recipe' Regal would go low 12's with high boost launch. By recipe, I mean a bolt on car. Stock engine, stock turbo, Dutt-necked stock intercooler. A dude named Tim Stockwell went mid 11s back in the early 90s with a bolt on Regal. Red Armstrong went 11s in his wifes loaded out Limited, if I recall, with just bolts ons. Shoot, my Regal went 13.20 @103, at altitude, with ET Streets, old Catco high flow cat converter, Walker Ultraflow mufflers and 100 unleaded. An otherwise stock car, right down to the non-adjustable wastegate rod and factory chip.

Just a few corrections to Steve Magnate's statements: 0:22 The 'T' did NOT mean turbo, It meant the special handling package (Y56), he corrects himself at 0:48. 4:27 It allowed about 15 psi boost in 1st and 2nd. 5:35 The brake system (known as Power-Master) was electro-hydraulic, not vacuum at all. 5:48 1987 was rated at 245 HP. 6:22 The T package had nothing to do with the interior, this one happens to be optioned with the bucket seat and operating console.6:35 Tilt was optional, not standard. 7:36, the envelope is NOT factory. (And if it was that would have been for a 1986 T-type...) 7:48 The tire were not Gatorbacks, but Eagle GT's.

There were Limited Ts produced, same plush interior as the granny Regals but with a nice kick hiding under the accelerator. Stealth!
EDIT to add, that car has been converted from stock brake system, no accumulator bowl with the big yellow sticker. It's a good thing though, the pedal could go hard after the brake light came on in the turbo cars. You had to get to a shop ASAP because there wasn't much braking power when it went kaput. GM would replace it under warranty but they didn't advertise or send out notices. If you didn't ask you paid full price, like 600$ and up.

İ still get a punch to the gut whenever I see a GN or T-Type. So I have to remind myself just how lucky I was to have been able to buy one off the showroom floor to begin with. But even that doesn't take away the sting.
