I , 53 years old just discovered this song on 25th October 2024, yesterday. Obsessed with it and mad that it never played in the radio. I’m in the United States . Drop the Pilot showed up briefly on video shows, and I was mesmerized, would stay up hoping it would get played …
I bought this album when I was 17 yrs old, ordered it from England, which was a big deal back then. I am now 62, this songs stills lifts my heart and brings me to tears every time I hear it. Joan blessed my life, and continues to do so.
I think she was on Saturday Night Live - season 2. I posted this song on FB (or another of her songs - doesn;t really matter) I was pointing out - live recording, real talent, and in a denim shirt (after another grammys fiasco). She was a special talent. Good for you getting the album. I used to play her back in the day (frat boy 1980's parties). (Full on 1979.)
@@neildonovan6823 thank you for the comment, as it moved me to watch this video a few times this morning, which is a beautiful way to start the day. Perhaps her denim shirt is one of the reasons I have a few of them! Take care.
In 1979 I was a white boy living in maine working at kmart and a “hippie” co-worker introduced me to Joan and I was blown away. She is the definition of “soul” because her music comes from her soul and touchéd mine. Great memories, thanks, Joan
Which Country, Jamaica, Affffricaaa or Great Britain? LOL LOL LOL. I love her too, her music is a must. IDKY Her Majestic won't Knight her. She serves the Crown well.
My enduring memory of my mother, who died of a heart attack at 60 in 2001, is of her singing this as she pottered about in the kitchen when I was a child some time in the (probably) early 80s. I will always remain indebted Ms Armatrading for that.
There aren't too many songs that I recall hearing for the very first time but this is one of them. It was a Saturday and I was on a bus on the way home from shopping in the city centre. Tired with sore feet, this came on the radio and I was in another world, it was unlike anything I'd heard before. The moment I got home I told my roommate, "I've just heard this amazing song" before I could say anymore he told me, "It's Joan Armatrading's new one".
One of those tunes I had an out of of body experience when I first heard it. Probably about 1984 ish. Sat in my Dads blue Datsun. Only about 9. Sunny day of clarity and wonder. Then this came on the radio. Heaven!
Been listening to this musical goddess since the 1970s. Seen her in concert 5 times. Life changing. Sooomuch soul it just oozes out and into mine. Making me a much better more compassionate man. Thanks joan. Feel sorry for the poor souls stuck with Taylor swift
I first heard this song live at Coventry Theatre (UK) just before she released it as a single. She was supporting Supertramp. It was the most amazing evening. As soon as we heard this song, we knew she was something special. I immediately bought her album, the first of many! A true talent - and I can tell you, there is an awful lot of love and affection for J.A. ever since from her many fans.❤
Saw her live in Dundee in 1977 when she played support for Supertramp, it's still is one of the best concerts I've ever attended. Joan's performance absolutely blew me away and I've been a fan ever since. This track still gets me after all these years!
There are only two separate concerts I missed my ride home from: Supertramp, and Joan Armatrading, both from Montreal to home 60 miles away. I stayed for Joan's THIRD encore because the midnight bus NEVER left on time (until that night, LOL!). I walked & ran 14 miles solo, then hitched a ride the rest of the way home, getting home just as the sun was coming up. Unforgettable performance and adventure! With Supertramp, we tried to take a case of beer into the stadium, couldn't, got separated from our ride & never saw them again. Pre-cell phone era. Supertramp was fun! The 3 of us hitched a ride south, then called a taxi to take us back north to Montreal several hours later when we were not getting any rides, then took the bus back home.
@@brianwhoreadsobjectiveinfo1122 We sat up the back of the hall in the balcony and got stoned! Can't remember how we got home but it was only a couple of miles so it was no big deal. :-)
My God, is it really 45 years ago that I saw Joan Armatrading and Supertramp live (more than once)!!! Also, The Old Grey Whistle Test was a must watch in the 70's!
I discovered Joan’s music as a teen in the 90s. Since then, I return to it over and over. She is such an incredible songwriter. Her music has lasting power.
Just LOVE this version. Wish end of vid not so abrupt but still - wow - so young, beautiful, enchanting, real - no autotune in miles. Sent this to others to spread the joy.
I was just thinking that there are so many kinds of artists who have had great succes. Those who are always in the news, who create lots of "buzz" and hype, and then there are those artists who write brilliant songs, go out on tour and give all they've got, yet are never in the news for some kind of personal drama. Joan is that kind of artist. It is so refreshing to listen to her music, quietly appreciating her artistry, yet she is so down to earth. :)
I’m watching a series on Netflix called Eric. Suddenly, this song came on. It blew me away!!! It brought back so many memories. I hadn’t heard this song for years! My friend Sharon (RIP) introduced me to Joan Armitrading’s music in the 1980s. She played her album over and and over again. I instantly fell in love with her music and I started playing her albums endlessly. My favourite Armitrading song is “Mix Some Water with the Wine, but I love all of her music. I will be listening to Joan Armitrading’s music non stop! Once you hear her beautiful, unique, spiritual voice and style you’re hooked! You want to hear it again and again.
No matter how much you like this song, it is way better again. It twists up your insides and never lets go throughout the song - no denouement, an almost unique feat in a commercial song. Genius.
What a wonderful video in her younger years....to hear her growth in another shared video amazing ........My heart is singing from her melodious lyrical voice. The Sax and guitar sounds tickling my spirit...deeply. : -) Thanks Joan A. for sharing your gifts with us and those Angel Warriors that share them with people like me not so great on the PC. Happy!!!!! : -)
Memories of this on the car tape player, late evening, English country lane sat waiting at a rural level crossing not caring if the train never came! 1976 was another good year made better by Joan.
I didn't know the song was that old. I was born in September 1975 and always thought that was a song from the early 1980s. It's a song that was well ahead of its time, has aged well and definitely still relevant today.
Remember seeing this on ogwt and going out and buying the album its still one of my favorites to this day I remember playing it so often when i lived in corfield street ... great songwrting..

The lady’s is class I think she is the best singer/songwriter this country has produced
I would include Kate Bush in this elite group ;D
Do you know what, John. I’m a year behind you: but better late than never. Cheers!
oh absolutely. She is the greatest by far :)

I can’t believe it took me
40 years to appreciate this amazing song. What a woman.
Lol....took a lot of us 300 years to appreciate Shakespeare and some of the best artist's 😉🎸😎🙏 Enjoy the good stuff🇺🇲
This needs about 100,000,000 more view.
Joan Atmatradings fusion of blues, jazz, rock and pop is like no other.
- a true gift to music
This actually just made me cry. So good on every level.
A song for all time. Joan sings with such ease, sweetness, grace, soul and grit. To this very day she remains a treasure.

Joan this song is a classic and treasure, you was born to do this! And no lipstick!
Brilliant. 38 dislikes? What sad people. I don’t believe in God but talent like this isn’t from this World.
One of the greatest, most powerful and most memorable (love) songs ever, ever written.
29 people have no ears....timeless classic performed as it should be live, no autotune, no gimmicks, just quality and class.

Oh! Thank u beautiful soul for great music. Am loving 💕 u Joan, my legend xoxo
such a beautiful classic
One of the all time great songs by one of the most underrated talents of the last century.
Saw Joan live a few years ago in our local theatre, still amazing.

Magic!! She has not changed at all. Her Groove on the guitar is also a rhythm section on is own. All the best from Holland

Super strokes my heart. It’s beautiful
Completely timeless! Beautiful more so in this day and age...
Awww man, pure talent. I would have loved to see a duet with her and Tracy Chapman.

Dropping through folk, down into soul, deep into jazz, and back up through classic pop. Brilliant timeless song.
Yes!!!
How beautiful. So much talent concentrated in one wonderful woman.
Rare quality of having catchy soulful melody and beautifully penned heartfelt lyrics.
7 dislikes?? Why even come here . Beautiful talent
they are stupid
And yet Joan would forgive them...………………………….as they are lost.
I looooove her so much. I cannot listen to this or "Flight of the Wild Geese" without tears.
How can 20 people dislike this!? They’re probably ed Sheeran fans and jealous
That is the most stupidest comment I have ever heard in my entire life.

She is 100x better than Ed
Omg Ed Sheeran...soooo boring

My dad had this on vinyl when I was a kid in the 80s, amazing to learn more about her and see this spectacular performance decades later.

Joan was and continues to be a completely original artist.
No one else writes, sings or sounds like her.

Tracy Chapman is another singer songwriter in a similar spirit .... Just happy to hear both of them..
Such a beautiful song from an amazing artist. She sings with such honest emotion.
